This is at best a good civic lesson for a grade school, freshman in High School class text. No real employer would ever find this portfolio professional or useful. It presents a lot of hype, fluff, and encourages the reader to overstate and exagerate his skills.

A book for high school kids.......2002-04-30

I bought this book hoping for a serious advice for a professional portfolio creating, but found a bunch of recommendations good for high school-freshmen on how to best present their non-professional expereinces... How a real professional's portfolio looks like - is still a question for me... It seems like a portflio created following these guidelines would make a seasoned professional, an employer, smile at "the kid's nice attempt".

Complete with materials and equipment lists, this book also provides templates on disk to help those who are less experienced with technology. This books makes a wonderful instrument as a college text.

Professionals and students alike will find that they are better prepared for that all-important interview just by going through the creative process. The authors take the reader through the process of developing a portfolio by leading the creator to think critically about their own philosophies, goals, and ideas. This mental exercise alone makes one better prepared to answer those "difficult" interview questions.

Mentoring-a difficult task.......2006-12-12

This book focused primarily on adults who have mentored inner-city youth by providing guidance to youth during difficult times. The author, Marc Freedman acknowledges the fact that mentoring is a difficult task for anyone to take on, especially when it involves difficult or problematic individuals, but reaching out and allowing youth to become emotionally connected with their mentors provides an amazing outcome and rewards the mentor for their endurance and perseverance.

The author's background and personal experience with researching the effects on mentoring on youth in America is made clear throughout the book. Freeman highlights his research within the book and encompasses it with a deep personal care in regards to the fate of youth growing up in poverty. For the creation of this boo Freedman interviews over 300 mentors, you people, scholars, and youth workers and gathers that information to examine some difficult questions mentors face nowadays such as; how much can mentoring really accomplish, what does it take to be a successful mentor, and what makes the difference between an effective program and one fraught with difficulties.

The book is divided up into 10 main areas which focus on calling individuals to action, creating great expectation, recurring fervor, birth of a movement, the benefits of mentoring, making the most of mentoring, closing the caring gap, re-engaging the middle class, and reinventing the community.

I have not read this book first and foremost because I can not find a summary or review by anyone who has. I can only hope that this is an IRONIC TITLE as anything less is clearly offensive and part of a wide-spread idea that needs to end. In any case the choice of title is poor to say the least. I have a sense of humour but find this book putting it to the test.

I'm a redhead, and the title of this book is incredibly insulting. This author had better get it into her mind to choose less offensive titles for books. I have not read the book and have no intention to do so.

What a misleading title! If you are looking for a book about redheads and facts about them (like the old Redhead Encyclopedia) this book is definitly not it!

Couldn't tell you much more then that about what this book is about. Wish I didn't have it for so long (I was giving it as a gift) I just opened it. I should have back then so it could have been returned!

A Gem from a Giant.......2006-03-19

In a way, I can understand the attitude of the reviewer below who prefers to play the piano with a waffle iron --- that is, who claims all notes sound the same no matter how the keys are struck. What a tragic attitude. But it is true, also, that in the latter half of the 20th Century, much of piano playing was reduced to the mere technicalities of hitting the right notes in the right places at the right time, the poetry of the music pretty much forgotten, displaced by waffle iron tachnique.

Lhevinne truly is one of the pianistic giants of the first half of the last century, among the giants of the late Russian romantic school. Schonberg (I think it was) wrote of him as among the pantheon of performers, along with his colleagues Levitzky, Rosenthal, Rubenstein and such youngsters as Horowitz and the forever young Earl Wild. Rachmaninov said Lhevinne had the greatest left hand technique of any pianist. His few recordings, even though not re-mastered, leave you breathless.

I am willing to enjoy the idiocyncratic few pages of such a giant. If you were into baseball, wouldn't you enjoy a few pages of Joe diMaggio? Of course, probably not, if you use a waffle iron instead of a bat.

Probably Not a Complete Waste.......2005-12-03

The author wrote this with the underlying belief that not every way of hitting a piano key will produce the same sound. I can't subscribe to that, because at the end of the chain of events that produces a note, the sound is caused by a hammer hitting the string(s). Whether you hit that key with "the fleshy part of your finger", your fist or a waffle iron, it's still just hammers striking strings.

When the author isn't going on and on about the theatrics of your wrist and arm motion to better hit a key so as to let him think you're producing a different tone, the rest of this book can actually be of some help to some pianists and wannabes.

This is still the most influential source on the Russian School of Piano Playing. It starts here - all other publications follow it. Still THE best book on piano playing.

Another book........2004-03-06

I didn't find this book very useful, I recommend saving your money for some of the more recently written books on piano playing, such as the wonderful book by Gyorgy Sandor (On Piano Playing: Motion, Sound, and Expression), or the one by Seymour Fink (Mastering Piano Technique: A Guide for Students, Teachers, and Performers). Those are much more helpful in detailed technical and artistic suggestions.

Actually, those others are so much better you must have a copy if you are serious about the piano.

Worth every page.......2003-07-17

Perhaps the previous reviewer did not take note of the title - "Basic Principles in Piano Forte Playing", which is just what it is - nothing more, nothing less. Josef Lehvinne is of the old school of thinking, namely, he believes that only meisters should be teaching how to play music, although he grudgingly acknowledges that demand outstrips supply and American "method" teaching has reached acceptable standards. I dread what he would think of me trying to teach myself. I could make fun of his attitude, but in reality he is a perfectionist, and that is what it really takes to make an outstanding musician of any instrument. Furthermore, he shares in a very readable style what is important when mastering the piano. Even a beginner like me can appreciate the value of his very generous advice. Every page has at least one or more important gems, and his style of writing is such that you are sure to remember them!

In defending your systems against intruders and other meddlers, a little knowledge can be used to make the bad guys--particularly the more casual among them--seek out softer targets. Counter Hack aims to provide its readers with enough knowledge to toughen their Unix and Microsoft Windows systems against attacks in general, and with specific knowledge of the more common sorts of attacks that can be carried out by relatively unskilled "script kiddies." The approach author Ed Skoudis has chosen is effective, in that his readers accumulate the knowledge they need and generally enjoy the process.

The best part of this book may be two chapters, one each for Windows and Unix, that explain the essential security terms, conventions, procedures, and behaviors of each operating system. This is the sort of information that readers need--a Unix person getting into Windows administration for the first time needs an introduction to the Microsoft security scheme, and vice versa. A third chapter explains TCP/IP with focus on security. With that groundwork in place, Skoudis explains how (with emphasis on tools) attackers look for vulnerabilities in systems, gain access, and maintain their access for periods of time without being discovered. Great book overall but..........2007-09-08

I can't argue with the fact that this is a great book to learn security. It also serves as a fantastic intro to networking with some really good insight into the interworkings of TCP/IP. One thing that is great about this book is the detail that the author goes into on each section. This should be required reading for all new security/network professionals. Its funny but the things that people take for granted that they know (foundational knowledge)are the very things that not many people in the field truly understand at a deep level. This book will help you to not be one of those people.

Only one real gripe - I know typos happen and errors are common in technical books BUT... in a chapter about TCP/IP to misspell the late Jon Postel's name is just unbelievable -- Wow. (p.32)

Excellent book for those interested in internet security.......2007-07-09

This book has done a great job at informing readers of network security. After supplying a little OS and networking background information the author composes the information in a way that an attacker would view it so the reader can get inside the mind of an intruder. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how attacks are executed.

Insightful and Informative.......2006-12-04

As a student studying information technology with goals of having a career in the information systems security field, Mr. Skoudis' book "Counter Hack Reloaded" provides me with an amazing resource that is helping me obtain the knowledge and skills I need to succeed in the Infosec field. His book is insightful and explains the complexity and workings of varius threats and risks to our networks and computer systems in a way that makes them easy to understand. The steps attackers usually take are broken down and analyzed along with ways to secure your systems from such attacks.

The book is broken down into different phases after the few first chapters go over the basics of networking and the major operating systems (Windows and Linux/Unix). Phase One covers Reconnaissance which includes tactics such as social engineering. Phase Two is scanning and the different methods of scanning networks, both wired and wireless. Phase Three covers gaining access to the network through attacks on applications, OSs, DoS attacks, and other network attacks. Phase Four covers maintaining access, which includes information on varius threats such as backdoors, trojans, rootkits, etc. Phase Five reviews covering one's tracks and hiding evidence of network intrusions, etc.

I recommend this book to anyone in my position of currently obtaining an education in any field having to deal with information systems. Even if security is not your main focus, the knowledge this book provides is valuable as a reference and as a way of better understanding the current threats to our organizations and the networks that make them up, both the technical and personnel networks.

This book is an absolute must have for every security professionals bookshelf. If you are new to the arena of Information Systems Security or a CISSP this book leads you down some extremely interesting vulnerability protection paths. Ed Skoudis gives an exhaustive look into the mind and intentions of the "Nasties" out there and how to protect yourself and your network from them.

The chapters are well laid out and each builds on the knowledge from the previous chapter(s). The Table of Contents allows for easy reference back to a specific chapter for later the material is cutting edge and well explained with references to additional material online.

All in all a very insightful book that made me double check all of my firewalls and filesystem protection methods and apply some of the knowledge learned.
