1 out of 5 stars Not enough useful information.......2002-08-14

If you're looking for a good book on how to write a compelling resume and prepare it for online use, I recommend you look elsewhere. While this book covers resume creation, as well as online format information, these sections are too slight to really help you write an effective resume, cyber-focused or not. The authors seem more interested in technology (OCR, resume software) and offbeat career search areas (government retirees, for example) than resume content.

While the more recent edition of this book may have more up-to-date job site listings (and the rating system is good), the listings in this edition are already out-of-date.

For a better book on resume writing that also covers much of the cyber territory, try Resumes for Dummies.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I needed!.......1999-10-06

Alot of good info I havn't seen before

5 out of 5 stars Essential instructions for resume posting on the Internet........1999-01-22

The authors explain in clear and non-techno babble prose, the steps and concepts behind making use of the Internet for conducting a career search and sending out your resume.

I especially appreciated their listing of some of the better and most worthwhile resume database sites to submit resumes to and look for job postings on.

Essential driving guidance to have in this "information superhighway" age!

        Book Description

Skills in Neighbourhood Work is a practice handbook. It explains the skills, knowledge and techniques needed by community workers and other practitioners to work effectively in and with communities. While the principles and methods it describes have stood the test of time, the political, economic and social changes which have taken place since the book was first published have made a new edition essential. Completely rewritten and updated, the third edition retains all the practical information needed by the student or practitioner but sets it in contemporary context. It includes a European perspective and views from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

                  Book Description

During the last decade, women--particularly from the conservative lower-middle class--have increasingly entered the office sector in urban Pakistan. This book analyzes how their integration into a traditionally male world has changed not only the women's lifestyles, but also general office
culture, sociological perceptions of female office workers, and working women at large.

                            Book Description

Welcome to the Dead Dog Caf Comedy hour. The talk is lively and the coffee's always on and you never know who will drop in.

For first time visitors, you'll meet the regulars at the Caf. There's Jasper Friendly Bear, the optimist of the group. We don't know what he did before starting the radio show, but since then he has talked about becoming paparazzi photographer and opening a bank at the caf. There's no end to the good that Jasper can do for the country as a whole. Then there's Gracie Heavy Hand, who is more pragmatic than Jasper. She's very "down to earth" and as a businesswoman she's very supportive of Jasper when it stands to make her some money. Then there's Tom King, who gets to play himself. He thinks he's cerebral. He also thinks that he understands both native and white culture, but he doesn't really understand either.

The Dead Dog Caf Comedy Hour currently runs 3 times a week on Radio One.

I'm Canadian (but not First Nations) and laughed so much during the first of these cassettes that I had to stop and buy all of them. The humour is consistent, the delivery is excellent, and the topics are hilarious - I keep listening just to find out how many different ways Jasper Friendly Bear can make Tom buy his coffee.

This is possibly the funniest audio recording I own, but if you aren't Canadian, and/or Native American you probably shouldn't bother. They are able to make me laugh even while harpooning me for behaviours I have been guilty of, and while making incredibly cynical comments on European treatment of North America's first residents. Because of the humour, they can make comments that would otherwise be harsh beyond belief. The cast also has a fine sense of the plain slapstick, and absurd presented with great comic timing. I've had to pull the car over several times while listening to it because I was laughing too hard to drive safely.

I drove across Canada in the summer of '98. It was a great trip, but sometimes the driving got boring, I got sick of all the CDs I'd brought along, and there was no good music on the radio. However, CBC was everywhere, and generally kept me amused. Dead Dog Cafe Comedy Hour was the highlight. I thought it was hilarious, and I'm not even Canadian.

You know them by now - Jasper Friendly Bear (who takes advantage of Tom's gullibility on 'Fireside Friendly Bear'), Gracie Heavy Hand (who makes a mean cup of coffee and somehow manages to get Tom to pay every time) and Tom King himself - the 'voice of reason'?. They're fun, they're ridiculous and I had to buy them all.

3 out of 5 stars Complete jazz exercise lacks rhythm application.......2005-04-24

This was probably my first jazz piano book when I first bought it 6 years ago. Honestly, it did not teach me much about jazz but the exercise help me a lot in term of playing major 7th and minor 7th chords at that time. The book did not emphasis much about rhythm, as many jazz pianist would tell you a big difference between classical and jazz music is the rhythm. A swing feel is not easily explained to many traditional classical pianist. This book did not dwell on that at all. However, after knowing what a swing feel is, this book would be a practical exercise book. I would suggest to play the example in the book with a swing feel instead of a steady rhythm like written. Honestly it is a breakthrough once I understand to apply the exercise in jazz rhythm.
The book is very useful in explaning the many sub-genres of jazz. You will know what a bebop, a walking bass, a swing base, and others after going through the exercise. You will also be able to create opened and closed voicing after this. It does take an intermediate jazz pianist to understand the application process of this exercise.

5 out of 5 stars The Hanon are great exercises.......2002-08-09

The Hanon are great exercises, but it's important to do a variety of exercises. Going through 50 Hanon Exercises each day may be a little overkill and somewhat unbalanced, especially if you're playing them all at the same tempo.

I couldn't play at all unless I warmed up for 45 minutes. What I learned was, in addition to "exercises" it's important to play some tunes...

                                Try some of these:
-Hanon 1st exercise, all keys quarter note 100
-All Major scales, 4 octaves, various tempi

                                -Apreggios - same
-Pick one or two a day of the following:
                                Brahms 51 exercises
                                Pischna
                                Schmitt Preparatory Exercises
                                Bach Two Part Inventions
                                Chopin Etudes, Waltzes (anything really)
                                Scott Joplin rags
                                Blues - in various keys
Tunes you'd play on gigs in different keys each day

just mix it up and don't spend more time on exercises than you do playing tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Bartok for Beboppers ?.......2001-06-11

I have mixed opinions on this one... To be honest, you can probably get an even better bang for the buck by purchasing the full version of Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist and practising the exersizes with swing feel (play chords in your LH and the patterns in your RH), then you could then go out and get some of David Baker's Bebop Pattern books and dig down even deeper... (If you don't know what swing time and swing feel is, you should probably sit in a few lessons with a Jazz improv instructor anyway... sometimes it doesn't come through in writing anyway.) - - Of course what's most important is being able to take the pattern concepts, and applying them to the scales and modes that fit in with different chords, so for that purpose, you should definitely get your hand on a good Jazz Improv book... and also be sure to learn them in all keys... whatever the case, the most important thing to realize is that this is a TECHNIQUE book... not an improv book... hence, you should use this book for the purpose of building your dexterity not for solo ideas... Don't throw away your old Hanon! This book is not tied to the successfull formula of the origional Hanon. It replaces the repetition and drill-like nature with a set of short, progressive jazz studies. But while initially misled by the title, I find this different approach successfull. With little explanation or theory I've been able to progress significantly just by working my way through the book -- moving on to the next exercise as soon as I feel comfortable with the last. For those of us who feel a little like a fish out of water in Jazz, this is a great way to learn to breathe air.

4 out of 5 stars Good for technique, but repetitive structure........2004-09-01

This book's major drawback is its lack of variety. The left hand voicings for the first 13 exercises I practiced over a period of eight months were the same, using the root, perfect fourth, and flatted seventh. The right hand involved variations on a minor pentatonic scale, moving chromatically through two octaves. Though I enjoyed the serious practice and development of certain fingerings, I have reservations about its improvisational value. In fact, I don't think it's always wise to practice exercises that have little practical applications. Technique is not an end in itself, and I would have preferred exercises and etudes based on real jazz progressions that incorporate more than just pentatonic ideas. The latter half of this volume seems a bit more inspired, but there's room for improvement. Overall, I give it four stars because some benefits may be derived from this inexpensive book, but what should have been a modern approach to Hanon's original exercises in a jazz context turned out to be stylistically limited and of questionable use. With some imagination, this could have been a far more versatile effort.

I bought this book a number of years ago and I still take it out every now and again to look through it. I never get bored with it. A friends partner died a few weeks ago and he was a huge fan of Elvis, when I showed it to her she got great comfort from looking through it. Well worth a look. I will treasure my copy for life.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but still exciting!.......1999-11-29

The reason why I didn't rate this book higher than 3 stars, is the fact, that most Elvis fans already have seen the pictures that this book features. Still, this book is a very, very nice photo-book, which contains glossy photo's of Elvis devided into three parts: the '50's, '60's and '70's. Most pictures are included in the '60's part, which is remarkable, because most books include pictures of the '70's. The photo's are from a high quality and there is a describtion with each picture. I would like to recommend this book to every person who has just started to buy books about Elvis Presley. For the die-hard Elvis fan it isn't essential.

It is okay, but if you read The Video Game Guide 1995, you get just about all of what is in this book and more.

                                      Book Description

In this book Gary William Flake develops in depth the simple idea that recurrent rules can produce rich and complicated behaviors. Distinguishing "agents" (e.g., molecules, cells, animals, and species) from their interactions (e.g., chemical reactions, immune system responses, sexual reproduction, and evolution), Flake argues that it is the computational properties of interactions that account for much of what we think of as "beautiful" and "interesting." From this basic thesis, Flake explores what he considers to be today's four most interesting computational topics: fractals, chaos, complex systems, and adaptation.

Each of the book's parts can be read independently, enabling even the casual reader to understand and work with the basic equations and programs. Yet the parts are bound together by the theme of the computer as a laboratory and a metaphor for understanding the universe. The inspired reader will experiment further with the ideas presented to create fractal landscapes, chaotic systems, artificial life forms, genetic algorithms, and artificial neural networks.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent book. I've been reading it for weeks. The chapters are not long, but the content is amazing. The author combines explanations and equations in a format that is demonstrative and repeatible. This is a very good book to study yielding the understanding necessary to penetrate many other advanced books on complexity theory. The author starts by examining whole numbers and real number problems. Next, he examine Godel's incomplete theory of predicate logic showing that no formal language is complete. Next, he examines fractals, self-similar patterns, low ordered with high compression and high order with low order compression, L-systems, and Juliet and Mandel-brot fractals. Fractals open up an emmense study into the complex pattern from simple rules and recursion. Next, he examines equations of strange attraction, chaos, and demonstrates stability behavior within complexity. Next, he looks at small universes created by running CA. NNs and GAs are examined in the last chapter. I was excited to write down many of the authors processes and run them using OpenGL and C. I believe this book to be an excellent book for college students. The material is easy to understand and the content very demonstratible. Cause and effect are very cohesive in this book. Even though the book seems simple, it covers an vast amount of topics necessary to understanding AI and AL.

4 out of 5 stars Good first book on the subject of simulating natural phenomena.......2006-08-04

This is a good introductory textbook for college undergraduate mathematics and computer science students that attempts to combine the theory of computation with some mathematical concepts and in the end, manages to model virtual life by explaining basic concepts in chaos, adaptation, fractals, and complex systems. There are better books on all of these subjects, but few others do such a good job of tying together key concepts from each discipline into the one theme of this book. However, there is only enough room to outline the included subjects rather than investigate them thoroughly.

Also, the mathematics is elementary enough to be accessible to a mathematically mature high school student. The mathematics is concisely explained as it is needed, with just a page or two for each of calculus, linear algebra, affine transformations, complex numbers, vector calculus, and matrix algebra. Thus, the included mathematics makes a better refresher than a tutorial for the novice even though the author states in the preface that he wrote this book for a younger version of himself. This book teaches its subject matter mainly by demonstrating concepts through simulations that are expressed in dozens of programs which illustrate the points being made. Instructions on using the programs are scattered throughout the book. The source code is available for download on the web, along with selected excerpts from the book.

I would recommend this as a first book for those interested in simulating natural concepts, but it should not be your last if your goal is to truly grasp the concepts presented and produce simulations of your own. However, an even better book on this subject is "Mathematical Models in Biology", although it is an advanced text. A very accessible book that is also more advanced than this text is "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: With Applications to Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering". It clearly explains the mathematics while tying it into key concepts in nature. "Chaos and Fractals" by Peitgen is a good book on the subject for the layperson with a fascination for mathematics presented in some depth. The book also has various Java programs that illustrate key concepts.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Interesting Topics.......2002-03-27

Good book, [X] bucks is a bargain, it's worth twice that easily.

                                      Favorite things about this book
Covers L-systems and also gives the rules for how to make some interesting plants. Also this book touches on some aspects of AI like game-trees and neural nets. The author discuses "boids" and self-organization with autonomous agents that act together, and shows simulations of ants and a flock of birds using this concept.

5 out of 5 stars Real "How Nature Works". Already is "Legend in the Making.".......2001-09-24

I recently became interested a lot in Nature. Especially, being someone in the field of Computer Science, the computational aspect. And this book is by far one of my favourite among all the "How Nature Works" kind of books I've read.

This Computational Beauty of Nature (CBofN) covered a lot of topics. Ranged from brief introduction to Computation Theory, Fractals, Chaos, Complexity, Adaptation. (See the Table of Content for more details).

All topics are written in surprisingly clear and very understandable manner. With as little Math as possible. (From my opinion, these topics cannot be completely understood without Mathematics -- The Language of Nature). Therefore, it is also accessible to layperson.

This book does not, however, go so deep into each subject. (You won't expect it to do that with its less-than 500 pages, don't you? :-) Instead, it does give nice backgrounds, fundamental knowledge, and important ideas for each. So, if you are interesting in any of the subjects presented here, you can go on to the more specialized books on your own.

One of the nicest feature of this book, which can hardly be found in other text, is that the it does show how things work together, where and why. For example, natural phenomena like adaptation, evolution, computation, and some other things else related to each other. How can one view this from that perspective, and vice versa. etc.

One other nice feature of this book is, you can really play with almost all concepts using a number of computer programs. All the programs are downloadable (with source code, under GNU license) from the book's homepage. So, you can reproduce almost all the figures from the book.

However, for one thing, the homepage address given in the book, in the edition/printing I have is incorrect. Maybe MIT Press had changed the structure of their website or something...

...you can still search for it using your favourite web-search engine.

About the website, all the good things are there as well, including errata. (Of course, Perfect things are very rare in Nature... So, books with some errors are ok. The thing that matter is the authors know it/admit it and tell the readers or not).

Conclusion: If you want to understand "How Nature Works" from the computational point of view. If you interested in Chaos theory, Fractals and Complexity. Then, make no mistake, you can't go wrong with this one. (And, get the hardcover edition, because you will read it, read it, read it again, and keep refering to it. So the paperback edition probably can't endure that :-)

I want to give it more stars if I only could. This book will always get the highest rating possible from me wherever and whenever I review it.

Nature herself is so beautiful. So, it's time to get to know her, to learn about her and to understand her! And this book just did it, in such a way that can hardly be better!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book and get hooked...........2001-04-11

Great book - will get you hooked to this science. Intuition given more weightage than equations and the result is something a broad range of people can use. Whether you're the curious novice who's dabbling in chaos to see what it is all about or you're the mathematician teaching this stuff, you'd love to have this book on your table. Happy reading :)
