There is a Resume in this Book for Everyone!.......1998-06-13
There really isn't much to be said about this book other than it contains literally hundreds of sample resumes. It is the author's intent to allow readers to select the type of resume that seems right for them. The author expresses the concern that users of this book should express themselves visually by using the layout, wording, font styles, graphics, and even paper styles that reflect their personalities, personal needs, and objectives. Every person is different and so is each resume in this book!
The major drawback of this book is the fact that it is sold without an accompanying CD or diskette that could contain all the sample resumes in the book. This would make custom editing a breeze, saving both time and perhaps money.
Speaking of money, someone could buy this book and go into the resume writing business as a full-time or part-time employment opportunity! Furthermore, this line of business could be taken to the Internet. Many have already done this but there is always room for others to jump in! Consider obtaining a copy of the author's newer book, Resumes in Cyberspace, to make the transition to the Internet smoother. If you need a resume you need these books!

I must confess, I have not been able to read the book cover to cover because it is so touching my eyes keep tearing up and I have to stop. It is amazing what a difference one can make in the life of a child. The commitment is minimal, and the rewards are great. I have been a Big Sister for several years now, and it has really enriched my life (and my Little Sister's too, I hope!). I highly recommend reading this book if you have ever considered becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, or if you have or know of a child you think might benefit from the program.

"Equal pay for equal work" has long been a forceful slogan of the feminist and labor movements. Now, however, as the American economy depends more and more on "women's work," it has become clear that this objective does not benefit the majority of women, who are employed in sex-segregated jobs. In Between Feminism and Labor, Linda M. Blum examines the movement for comparable worth, or equal pay for comparable work, as a strategy to raise wages for the "pink-collar" jobs that are most frequently occupied by women. She explores the larger political implications of the movement and provides the first study of pay equity to focus directly on the mobilization of the female work force at the grass-roots level.
Through two case studies of local comparable worth movements--in San Jose and Contra Costa County, California--Blum probes several important issues. She asks whether comparable worth can contribute to the formation of active labor-feminist alliances, and after a nuanced, intelligent analysis of the complexities and contradictions of comparable worth, endorses its radical potential to improve women's wages and forge links between gender- and class-based politics.
Between Feminism and Labor also situates comparable worth in the context of the limitations of affirmative action, a strategy seeking to move women into male jobs as opposed to raising the value of women's work. It is the first study to contrast these two strategies and to place them within the theoretical and political debates over the validation of gender difference versus the requirement of gender neutrality. As such, the book should stimulate debate among those concerned with the future of the feminist movement, as well as those interested in the future of organized labor and progressive politics in America.

examines how youth are being increasingly subjected to racial stereotyping and violence in various realms of popular culture, especially children's culture. But rather than dismissing popular culture, Henry Giroux addresses its political and pedagogical value as a site of critique and learning and calls for a reinvigorated critical relationship between cultural studies and those diverse cultural workers committed to expanding the possibilities and practices of democratic public life.
Specifically, Giroux examines the rise of a new kind of visual hyper-real violence directed at the contemporary youth market. This new genre combines the spectacle of violence with an avant-guarde aesthetic that subordinates its often racist and sexist political messages to the hype of nitty gritty realism and aesthetic formalism. In Fugitive Cultures: Race, Violence and Youth, Henry A. Giroux subjects media representations of youth to penetrating critique, placing himself squarely on the side of youth. He perceives youth as doubly disadvantaged: demonized in popular culture, and caught between "American dreams" of a better life and the reality of a declining economy (12). Authority and legitimation have been taken away from the institutions of family, school and workplace, and accorded to the electronic media discourses.
Giroux faults the schools and the discipline of education for refusing "to deal with the teacherly influence and pleasures of popular culture" (14). He advocates cultural studies as a platform for the study of "youth problems," since it "has never reduced education to the study of schooling." This last-mentioned quality is one of great promise, I believe, for the study of marginalized sub-cultures (as in my prospective research): it is impossible within the hegemony of formal institutions to obtain a somewhat comprehensive view of the modalities in which self-identification takes place for members of subcultures.

Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2 is the sequel (and a good one at that) to well, Ready 2 Rumble. Makes sense, right? I decided to buy this strategy guide because I already had the game. Most people naturally think sports strategy guides are futile, but it gives an extremely detailed explanation of every boxer, including special moves, taunts, and combos, and also the 4 modes of play- this is what everybody has trouble trying to find out. If you're not into boxing or boxing video games steer clear, because this is strictly a strategy guide. This guide extended the lifespan of Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2 for Nintendo 64 and it made it more enjoyable, and that is enough of a reason for a strategy guide to earn its respect, don't you agree??

There was a lot of theory, but not all that much instruction that could be applied outside this book's carefully designed examples. With the increasing popularity, I spend quite a bit of time flipping through it, trying to give it a chance. As a computer instructor, I wouldn't suggest it.

I was looking for something to introduce me into the world of Database Programming in VB. This book, surprisingly, does a pretty good job.
I was looking for something to get me started with ADO as well as some of the newer VB technologies, such as WebClasses - a subject I knew nothing about. The book did a fairly good job. It doesn't go in depth into any of the subjects, but gives you enough to wet your appetite, which is what I hoped out of it.
If you're looking for something to introduce you to the world of database programming using VB, this may be the one you want. Let's face it - compared to other programming books, you can't beat the price.
