My professor used the 5th edition in the Digital Elec class many years ago. I write software but have been trying to make the transition to logic design ... picked up the latest edition for refresher
Great book
Magnificent book to understand Digital Electronics !.......2006-04-25
This is the best book to understand Digital Electronics with clear and simple explanations. The salient feature of this book is that it has lot of applications sprayed throughout which keeps the reader attentive and interested. A "Must Read" for graduate/undergraduate students in any university in the world.

Good for first year EECS program........2004-02-24
You can gain the basic digital logic design knowledge using this book in no time! that is not always sufficient for people who wants to get A grade rather you can just make it your introduction and so soon move to part two (that is up to your current course).
My advice is : get this book unless you have passed this level!
Best of its kind.......2003-02-09
I used this book for a course on Digital Electronics. Its great. The book has a great typeset, clear and crisp fonts that go easy on the eyes, well structured (such that you read what you need in order to understand the next chapter). The book is illustrated with apt diagrams. I would consider this book to be beginner-intermediate. This book is a good starting point for learn digital stuff, and a good reference after you learn digital stuff. Its hard to find a book as good as this one.

Customer Reviews:
reviewing songwriters market.......2007-04-11
I've been getting songwriter's market since 1984 and find it very useful and informative.
If you are A songwriter - YOU NEED IT!.......2007-02-12
ANY SONGWRITER WHO HASN'T READ THIS BOOK IS AN AMATEUR - If you want to look and sound like a pro - this book is the FIRST STEP.
Perfect For Aspiring Songwriters!.......2006-11-25
If you are an aspiring songwriter, this book is for you. It has great articles from people in the industry on copyrights, publishing, contracts and royalties, as well as lists of publishers, labels, managers and agents. I think it's a fine place to start your quest on becoming a hit songwriter. If you're realistic about your goals and your approach to getting your songs out there, this book, in my opinion, is a neccessary tool to use.
If you want more detail on any of the topics covered in this book, you'll need to get books that specifically address those topics.
Get With The Times.......2006-02-26
I've been reading these books for the last decade... nothing has changed. They (like many major labels) refuse to adapt to today's music industry and continue to sell the same, lame stuff. Their advice is dated, their resources are still limited, the attitude from the majority of labels and managers is down right mean, and at least half won't even listen to your demo. If you feel dicouraged after reading, you're not alone. Honestly, times are changing... start your own website!
PUT IT OUT!!!!!!!.......2005-03-22
A, E, I, O, U, SOME, TIMES, Y. FISHHEADS FISHEADS, ROLLY POLLY FISHHEADS. FISHHEADS FISHHEADS, EAT THEM, YUM.
If any of you out there remember these lyrics from two tunes put out in the 1980's, you probably also remember WHERE you heard them. These two songs,(which in my opinion are some of the most lame ever), were popular on MTV.
And if A E I O U Sometimes Y, and Fishheads can make it on MTV, surely to God, anybody's music can!!!!!!! 8 to 80, blind crippled or crazy, PUT IT OUT and see what happens! You never know till you try. Forgotten felon or soaring saint, anyone can put out music and it be listened too. And don't worry about what individuals say, listen to what the masses say!!!!!!! They are who count. So often so many people are discouraged from their work, their art, by so called "friends" who's full intention in telling you that your work stinks, is due to their jealous minds. And while true critic friends do exist, it is rare. In other words, don't base your sellibility(is that a word?) on what a few individuals (even yourself) think, but on what the masses think. Ever heard of the term "regional sales"? Some things sell better in other places than where they originate from. What you can't give away in some sections of the country, might abound in other areas. In other words, even "if" your critic were actually expressing what they thought was the truth by saying you stink, in other portions of the world, people might think it's the best thing they ever heard. But you'll never know until you try.
Years ago, I, and my friends had a bedroom band( bedroom, because there was no garage attached to the house), and we were our own worst critics. We thought we stank, but we kept playing, at least until we were distracted by things (girls), then we quit playing together. It wasn't long until people of the neighborhood were coming up to us and asking why we had STOPPED playing!!! You never know until you put it out. And note this: I took a writing class in the early 90's under a well known author who told us that the average manuscript gets about 70 rejections before it's published. The same holds true for music.
As for this book, It is published by the same fine folks who publish the Writer's Market, a company that has existed for many many years. It has an outstanding reputation for providing both aspiring and well known writers the most updated information on book and magazine publishers, and has the same reputation for music companies and the like. There's lots of practical information contained in these pages. There are music publishers as well as producers and record companies. Each has the name of the business, their address and/or website, and often lists email addresses and phone numbers. The information can help you find someone to at least look at your work. If the Songwriter's Market publishers, find out a company has a pattern of ripping people off(a rarity), they stop listing them in their guide. If you want, need, a publication that can be a stepping stone to stardom, order this fine publication today.
Book Description
Smut has become the new secondhand smoke: It confronts you against your will where you least want to encounter it, and it's impossible to protect your children from it. Nothing made this clearer than the Janet Jackson episode during the Super Bowl when millions of kids were exposed to an image that used to be restricted to consenting adults. But that's nothing compared with the sexuality that now saturates morning radio shows, prime-time sitcoms, pop music lyrics, billboards, and store windows. Just change the channel doesn't work anymore.
Enough, says Penthouse and Maxim writer Gil Reavill, the concerned father of a middle school daughter. As a liberal, Reavill always believed that Americans have a First Amendment right to read and view sexually explicit material, and he saw nothing wrong with contributing to publications like Screw. But he now argues that unlike magazines and videosviewed in private and by consentsmut in the public square has simply gone too far.
Reavill takes the reader inside the sex entertainment industry, recalling his own experiences as a young man from the Midwest seduced by a job at an X-rated magazine in New York City. With witty and fascinating stories, he shows how his colleagues rebelled against a stifling culture by pushing the envelope. Little did they realize that words and images considered porn in the 1980s are now on the public airwaves around the clock.
Many Americans instinctively defend smut because censorship strikes them as unacceptable. But Reavill argues that we have to balance the rights of those who want to buy smut with the rights of those who want to avoid it. His book will spark a long- overdue debate about where we draw the lines in pop culture.
Customer Reviews:
Conflicted!.......2005-12-30
Reavill's first job was at "Screw" magazine, and he has since moved on to writing for literary giants "Penthouse," and "Maxim." Somewhere between Screw and Penthouse he began worrying about the omnipresence of sex in one form or another - but not worried enough to quit his day job or to desire revision to Americans' right to Free Speech.
Reavill claims that more people view smut than sports. Venues include billboards, radio, TV, the Internet, video games, books, sexy clothes for youngsters, phone sex, motel movie rentals, X-rated movies on DVD-equipped autos in adjacent lanes, and raunchy songs played on high-powered automobile boom-boxes.
So what to do? Reavill points out that less than half of those with V-chips take advantage of their capability to block undesirable programs. Another problem is that censors historically end up making themselves (and their cause) look stupid - eg. banning Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, or Geoffrey Chaucer, or criticizing the Teletubbies. However, Reavill does make a good point that overall the prevalence of smut has become overwhelming.
Methinks Gil Reavill has a guilty conscience..........2005-12-29
He's apparently made quite a bit of money in smut, but now he's shocked, Shocked! that his daughter has been exposed to lewd and lascivious material, herself. Now, ACLU membership in hand, Mr. Reavill launches into a sermon about what needs to be done to clean up America's act.
I don't buy it. I've got a daughter about Mr. Reavill's age myself, and while I'm concerned about the scope of her access to sexually-oriented materials, I'm more concerned that Mr. Reavill and those who agree with him are trying to keep me from making decisions about my daughter's access, and instead make those decisions for me.
Mr. Reavill's credentials about being a card-carrying member of the ACLU don't hide the fact that his polemic is, frankly, tiresome and unimaginative. Each chapter rails about a different bit of the mass media, how the exposure to sex is simply out of control, and how a crackdown of some kind is needed on freedom of the arts, speech, and expression. All in the name of decency, of course.
One thing I looked for, but never found, while reading this book is a discussion of how Mr. Reavill or his own daughter were HARMED by exposure to Eminem's lyrics and Janet Jackson's bare boob. Shocked, maybe. Offended, probably. But harmed? Not one word. She might be mortified that her father is apparently such a prude, but being an embarrassment to one's children is one of the joys of being a parent.
I found "Smut" to be a typical argument against freedom of speech. "We don't trust you to supervise your kids; we'd rather do that for you." Thanks, but no. This book broke no new ground in the debate.
A more useful book might have been a discussion between Mr. Reavill and his daughter about WHY he has problems with HER watching "South Park" instead of why he thinks I should control my own kids' access to that show.
Maybe I like my kids watching "South Park."
Actually, I don't. But that decision belongs to me, not to Mr. Reavill.
To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt.......2005-10-23
This book reminds me in some ways of the book "Ordeal," by Linda Lovelace. In it, she says that she was forced to do the movie "Deepthroat," in addition to many other unspeakable acts. Later in life, however, she was a minor porn celebrity who hawked various adult products and movies. So is "Ordeal" to be totally believed?
Enter Gil Reavill, a former writer for publications like "Screw" and "Penthouse," to name a few. In "Smut..." he paints a vivid picture of how pornography and the sexualizing of America is having an adverse effect on our society. Television, mainstream movies, magazines, books, the internet and advertising in general are all being affected by smut. But aren't most people aware of this?
The old cliche "one can't see the forest for the trees" comes to mind when describing this book. Sometimes we actually have to be told what we are seeing and experiencing to actual be aware of it. In that regard the book completes it mission: we are surrounded with sex and pornography, yet can do little about it. The Janet Jackson episode is frequently mentioned throughout the book. After the initial outcry, what has really changed? Not much in the author's opinion.
The book is worth a read because the reader is forced to think about the consequences behind what is now normal. How quickly do we now look away from scantily clad girls on billboards? How quickly do we delete sexually explicit emails? How many times do we rewind Victoria's Secret commercials (for the TIVO-ly inclined)?
Returning to Linda Lovelace, my only question is: Is the author a true convert, or just a publicity hound? As in Lovelace's case, only time will tell.
Fascinating .......2005-06-03
This fascinating book is the work of Gil Reavill, an author and journalist who has worked for such publications as Screw and Penthouse magazines. Mr. Reavill is a proponent of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and fully supports the existence of the porn industry that he has been employed by since the early 1980s. However, American culture has changed markedly since Mr. Reavill went to work for Screw magazine, and the pornographic imagery and concepts that were once relegated to the dark corners of society have now moved into the mainstream.
In this book, the author pleads for the right of the porn industry to exist, but also pleads for the right to not be subjected to the porn industry. Throughout the first and second parts of the book, he shows how pornography has become ubiquitous in American culture, making it impossible to shut it out from out children's lives. In part three, he explains why we are where we are, and why so many support the porn industry with militantly blind obedience. And finally in the fourth part of the book he explains what we can and should do to protect ourselves and our children from pornography (including learning to use the v-chip).
Overall, I found this to be a fascinating book. The "chattering class" will be quick to dismiss the author and his opinions for any and every reason, but he does do an excellent job of presenting his credentials in discussing the issue, defining it, and suggesting moderate and reasonable action. If you are troubled by the R-rated talk and images that appear to be ubiquitous in our society, and want to see an insider's view, then I highly recommend this book. Mr. Reavill is to be congratulated for his excellent work, and his stance on a subject where his pocketbook would normally suggest his quiescence.
I give this book my highest recommendations!
thank god someone's finally talking truth.......2005-05-05
A thoughtful, interesting, mind-blowing book. Neither right nor left, but instead highly intelligent and original. Free-thinking and true.
Book Description
A celebration of TVs Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the woman CNN hailed as the Mother of Buffy Studies Rhonda Wilcox is the worlds foremost authority on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its characters, and its themes. Wilcox argues that Buffy is enduring as art by exploring its excellence in both long-term story arc construction and in producing individual episodes that are powerful on their own. She examines the larger patterns that extend through all seven seasons: the hero myth, imagery of light, naming symbolism, Buffys relationship with Spike, sex, and redemption. Wilcox also focuses on acclaimed and noteworthy episodes, including the musical Once More, with Feeling, the largely silent and wordless Hush, and the dream episode Restless. She examines Buffys literary narrative, symbolism, visual imagery, and sound. Combining great intelligence and wit, written for fans, this is the worthy companion to the show that has claimed and kept the minds and hearts of watchers worldwide.

buffy/angel fan.......2007-08-23
the book was ok but just for a read not to have, rhonda talk about other things then just buffy which i didnt like i got a bit bored with it and skip a few pages,i have read better books.
For all lovers of Buffy out there!.......2007-07-03
I cannot deny it, I am a Buffy fan. I have all the dvds, posters, cd with the musical, board game, calendar...this book is the last addition to my collection and so far it's very comforting to see that I am not mad, that this show had a message and it reached not only me. A must for all Buffy lovers out there!
The Art of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.......2006-03-23
Not a bad read for dedicated Buffy fans. A little heavy going but very interesting.
Academic Buffy Without A Lot of Jargon.......2006-03-09
I bought this book after Christmas and really enjoyed it. I found Wilcox's writing to be clear and often concise. I really enjoyed the essay topics that she included, especially "When Buffy Meets Harry" which compares Buffy and Harry Potter. She does a remarkable job comparing to two of them. As a student in Media Studies and Philosophy, I found her analysis on various subjects to be very insightful.
Non-academics can really appreciate this book and understand her essays. While I do have some philosophical background, I was still able to grasp her material much easier the first time around than some of the essays I have found in other academic Buffy books.
My only complaint is her fixation with Freud, I felt that Freud and phallic comparisons were made far more often than necessary and in ways that I didn't feel were warranted. But it could just be that I'm not a big fan a Freud.
In conclusion, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Sadly disappointing........2006-02-22
I was eager to read this book, but, ultimately found it wanting and remarkably sloppy. The book's intent, ostensibly, is to evaluate/examine the place of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the context of art, television and storytelling, in general. While it might very well have accomplished this laudable task, it is, in the end, undone by a truly slapdash writing and editing. The individual chapters are horribly disjointed, and the thematic arcs are lost in a mish-mash of misplaced references and overlong digressions that are almost imposssible to follow.
Initially, I thought perhaps this was a product of the kind of stilted, self-congratulatory, self-referential writing that weighs down many "academic" endeavors to discuss TV; however, as I continued to muddle through this book -- making inevitable mental comparisons to the many far better books I've read on the subject -- I realized that it was hindered not by its subject or its goal, but merely by poor writing and even worse editing.
I've read four or five books on the TV series, and found them all, in some manner or another, enriching and informative (the best of the lot by far being "Philosophy and BtVS: Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale"). Alas, this was not one of them.

good seller, definitely recommend.......2005-09-04
Shipping is prompt, and the item is in good condition as described.
Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read.......2005-08-17
This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.
I give this book a full 5 stars.
Not the best, but not too shabby.......2005-03-19
MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick.
great book for a beginner.......2004-12-11
This is an excellent book for a beginner--a beginner to MFC. It teaches you the basics( classes, pointer, ....) if you happen to have forgot them and it teaches you an undestanding of HOW MCF works and HOW to use it.
Most books seem to teach you how to use it, leaving how it works for the unknown, but this book does both. The layout of the book is excellent. 1/2 a page is code and the other 1/2 explains the code, very useful so you do not have to switch pages trying to see what they are talking about.
I really do not have anything to negatively say about this book. I am happy that I found a book that teaches the how and why. Great book for the beginner, and probably a decent book for the intermediate.
Note: It would be a good help, almost a must to have some understanding of function, arrary, memory, containers, classes work before you get this book.
programmingglitch.......2004-04-26
If you want to do some professional programming this book is almost a waste. It is very basic. VERY BASIC. Doesnt answer any of the basic questions. Okay. With MFC and SDI and MDI and all the supposedly cool and hyper smart stuff we at least hope to go beyond writing codes in SDI and MDI for saying "Hello World", and typing three stings as a document file. If that is supposed to be smartness....god save the world. No Help. With anything. Wont help you write a windows application. Unless ofcourse, you are the hello world kid. And get an ego boost once your hello world works!

As a hands-on tutorial to using Visual C++ 6, Getting Started with Microsoft Visual C++ 6 with an Introduction to MFC functions as a worthy reference to learning basic Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) programming. Written as a companion text to the authors' comprehensive C++ tutorial, C++ How to Program, this book will also be valuable to any beginning or intermediate C++ programmer tackling MFC for the first time.
The signature style of this book can be found in high-level, detailed use of Visual C++ and MFC along with a series of simple exercises. Despite its short length, the book is filled with specifics, including key terms, dozens of problems, and generally good coverage of MFC basics in a concise format.
Overall, the authors avoid using the various wizards in the Visual C++ environment and concentrate instead on do-it-yourself coding and discussions of key MFC classes and principles. The book includes a quickly moving tour of MFC, from basic window classes, event handling, and programming with basic control classes and graphics. After working through the examples, any C++ programmer will become familiar with the basics of MFC for client-side development (though database programming, ActiveX, and Internet development get no mention here).
As a concise tour of traditional client-side application development using MFC, this book fills a useful niche as a handy source for getting acquainted with MFC programming quickly. Provided you have some previous C++ knowledge, this text can definitely introduce you to the fundamentals of MFC development. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Visual C++ IDE basics, debugger, introduction to MFC, resources, menus, dialog boxes, mouse and keyboard message handling, MFC control classes, graphics, timers, bitmaps, and fonts.

Too slow and too little.......2004-12-24
The book is great if you just need to know MFC in few days. The plus point is use of good examples. But what is lacking is "why you have to do that" explainations. Also, something which is very irritating is the almost constant reference to the companion book (how to program in c++). It is almost as if telling if you dont have that book then you cant expect to accomplish much.
Very Elementary.......2004-12-10
Fair book, but if you have any knowledge of MFC, go for something else. It doesn't cover any of the more complex classes.
A great primer for MFC.......2004-08-27
I'd been struggling for a while with the tutorial examples in the MSDN library, and another book I had was more "do this and it will work", rather than "this is how function x works". This book has really hit the spot, and I've been able to write some simple MFC programs and fully understand how they work.
Just about every line of code is explained clearly, so there are no problems with snippets of code being left as a mystery.
The book doesn't use the wizards for quick MFC programming - I see that as a plus. This way you learn more about how the actual code works, rather than taking it for granted. Besides, it is very easy to have a play with the wizards and tinker with the code after gaining the knowledge from the book.
This book isn't the definitive guide to MFC, but then it doesn't claim to be. It is an excellent starter book, one I heartily recommend.
A good starting point.......2004-06-06
I'm not a software type although I do have some background in programming. I wanted to learn C++ to build my own applications for my computer, but I wanted the learning curve to be reasonable so that I can do it on my spare time. I purchased this book and Liberty's book "SAMS Teach Yourself C++ in 24 hours" which gets into ANSI/ISO C++ programming. You can purchase both books from Amazon for under $45. The two books complemented each other perfectly, and in about 8 weeks spending about an hour each day, I can program applications using my compiler. These two books were perfect for a novice like myself. What was nice was that both books came with a working compiler and all the examples were available either as a download or was available on the CD-ROM. What I found somewhat lacking in this book was detailed explanations of all the commands that was used in the examples, and how to expand on the examples so more different types of programmings can be created, but the book is very short and that's what I was looking for - something that doesn't require 1000 pages of reading, so I guess I can't have it both ways. What these books doesn't do is that it won't teach you the more sophisticated operating system related things like how to access a disk or other I/Os. If you are trying to learn this level of programming, you need to move up to a higher level books such as the "Win32 System Programming: A Windows(R) 2000 Application Developer's Guide (2nd Edition)" by Johnson M. Hart. But to get started on C++ programming, after many false starts over the years, these two books did it for me.
A Great Little book.......2002-09-12
Reading this little book (only 163 pages!) is the best way for a complete novice to get started learning MFC. The examples in the book are clear and easy to understand and all code is carefully commented line by line. No black magic anywhere. After reading this book you will understand the basic principles behind MFC.
The book of course only covers a small part of MFC. The authors do not cover Wizards and the Document/View architecture. So after reading this book you must read some other book that covers those topics. There are lots of them. You will find a dozen in any book store.
But read this book first. Otherwise Wizards and Document/View apps will just seem like black magic. This book will give you a solid foundation that helps you understand what you are doing.
