Book Description
This book contains the expert, hands-on guidance and detailed instructions you need to perform experiments that involve genetics, lasers, holography, alternative energy sources, and more. The projects in this book apply to future technologies as well as using that technology on old problems.
Customer Reviews:
Title is Misleading.......2006-09-24
This book has some interesting projects in it, but nearly the majority of the projects have absolutely nothing to do with electronics. The first chapter talks about recomginant DNA. That is indeed an interesting subject but has nothing to do with electronics. The second chapter talks about genetic evolution, another topic that has nothing to do with electronics. I believe that that title of the book is entirely misleading and that it should more appropriately be titled, "Science Projects for the 21st Century."
For electronics hobbyists.......2002-11-07
I've been an electronics hobbyist since TVs had tubes and transistor radios were leading edge technology. Over the years I've forgotten much of what I had learned. This book re-taught me what I had forgotten, in a better way than I had first learned it. The book has a lot of diagrams, analogies, examples, and applications. Overall it is a very good book.

Good book to catch the interest of reluctant students.......1999-10-14
I use projects from this book to teach electrical and electronic packaging design (circuit boards) at a technical school. The projects are fun and simple enough to complete in a 12 week quarter. The range from a biorythm feedback project to a UFO detector. The schematic drawings are not to any known standard, but part of the fun for my students is "correcting" information from an expert source.

Book Description
How the United States turns its back on the working poor.
An astonishing 35 million Americans work full time but do not make a living wage. They are nursing home staff, poultry processors, pharmacy assistants, ambulance drivers, child care workers, data entry keyers, janitors. Indeed, one in four American workers lives in or near poverty. Despite the great wealth of the United States, these low-wage employees have lower living standards than comparable workers in other industrial nations.
Beth Shulman spent several years traveling across the country talking to those living on low wages. In writing The Betrayal of Work, she provides the fullest portrait of America's working poor, dispelling a number of myths along the way: that lower unemployment has meant better living conditions for the poor; that making bad jobs into good jobs requires insurmountably difficult reforms; that low-wage work is always low-skilled. Following in the footsteps of Barbara Ehrenreich's bestselling Nickel and Dimed, The Betrayal of Work is sure to be one of the most talked about public policy books of the year.
Customer Reviews:
Untenable solutions for some thorny problems.......2004-03-17
Although in the blurb on the front of this book, Barbara Ehrenreich says she wishes she'd written it herself, this book is no Nickel and Dimed; it is less readable and much more tendentious. Beth Shulman does a satisfactory problem of describing the problems low-wage workers face (although I think she could've used a lighter hand with the statistics), but her proposed solutions are radically socialistic ones that in my opinion would have a devastating effect on the fabric of life in the U.S.
She does make several incisive points, though. Contrary to what many of us believe, there is very little mobility out of low wage work, even if one works hard. Also, low wage earners in most other affluent countries are significantly better off than their counterparts in the U.S., which is touted as the Land of Opportunity.
This book, for all its shortcomings, did make me think differently about low wage earners and the problems they face, but if you're only going to read one book on the subject, I'd recommend Nickel and Dimed.
Sad Truth's Hard to Bear.......2003-11-28
Although I haven't read the oft-referenced NICKLED AND DIMED, I discovered this book totally by accident and found it both informative and True. As one of the new "working poor", I responded immediately to the personal anecdotes. I am an educated white male in my early-forties who as recently as three years ago made $35,000 a year. Now, the best job I can find is in a bookstore for $8.50 an hour! And in my own immediate family, there are three others who have been struggling to find ANY job for two years, one of whom has a BA in Accounting!! So if anything, the book's alledged questionable anecdotes criticized by others certainly speak to this reader. Indeed, one could argue that anecdotes often reveal greater Truths than dry facts....
Of course, Shulman has an agenda, but it is one backed up by facts, quoted in her book and elsewhere. It is undebatably true that the job situation in the US is changing for the worse, and it doesn't take this book, or others, to prove it, but simple observation. However, it is great to see many of the facts I've heard so many times elsewhere collected in a single volume.
Sadly, Shulman is probably preaching to the converted. While I agree with every point in the book, its doubtful a Conservative or corporate-apologist would -- but then again, they are the ones who got us in this mess and are profiting from it, so what do they care? For me, this book makes me want to read more, so I think I'll check out "Nickled and Dimed" now....
don't listen to the last reviewer.......2003-10-05
This is a well documented, highly important book in the tradition of Nickel & Dimed. If you're interested in how our society fails to provide for millions of Americans who are working far more than 40 hour weeks, read this book.
interesting but off base.......2003-09-08
For anyone interested in a grab bag of left-wing critiques and some possible corrective mechanisms of the current US job market, this is it.
The book does use extensive documentation from left-wing sources but the author also uses many anecdotes. In Ms. Shulman's world there are only hard-working oppressed employees and greedy slothful employers. Many of the methods that enhance efficiency in the market (such as monitoring employee performance) are dismissed as cruel and oppressive.
Some of Ms. Shulman's concerns and suggested corrections are perhaps worthwhile, but many aren't. More importantly, she completely dismissed or ignored some obvious trade offs. Shulman often contrasts better aspects of European labor markets with the US but never addresses their biggest drawback, higher unemployment, apparently assuming widespread equality and opportunity for all can be legislated despite years of trying without success. She may believe that low-wage workers might be better off on a generous public assistance system than in the workforce, but even that would be of no value to millions of immigrants, for whom she claims to be an advocate.
This book is really a road map for perhaps more leveled economy but one with far less opportunity for ambitious and aspiring workers at all income levels.

From the supplier: The author chaired the French General Planning Commission's Working Group on "Work and unemployment to the year 2015." Here, he presents highlights from its report and focuses on its underlying assumptions: employment remains central to social integration; demand for both goods and labour becomes increasingly individualized; the State continues to play a major role. He then outlines six frameworks for the future of labour and work in France; opening up to the world economy; upgrading production capabilities; reorganizing working time; training; labour law reform, including the introduction of an "activity contract"; and revitalizing dialogue between the social partners. Book Description
Drawing upon a case study of a plant closing in Wisconsin and the results of national labor force surveys showing the displacement of millions of workers each year, this book examines the consequences of the rise in economic instability. Among those consequences are a productivity slowdown, increased disparities in earnings and income, and higher average unemployment. Moore assesses the extent of job loss nationwide, its costs to the individuals directly affected, and the way in which the incidence of displacement and earnings loss has shifted over the past decade, affecting groups long sheltered from labor market turbulence.
To reverse these trends, the book argues, an employment and training system that will give employers an incentive to invest in the skills of their employees is needed. Federally funded training programs have not improved the earnings ability of displaced and disadvantaged workers, and state-sponsored programs tend to exclude those most in need of assistance. Moore suggests direct employer investment in the general skills of employees as a remedy to both failings.

Is there anything to laugh about when you live in America? Can humor be a path to cross-cultural understanding? This anthology sets out to answer these questions and insists that humor is an important element when introducing students, employees, friends and others to another country.
The book contains humor from Mark Twain to Amy Tan to Stephen King. A wide range of genres are represented-pop to poetry, essays to comic strips.
Book Description
This accessible and concise introduction to the central nervous system of any studio is unbeatable when it comes to quick reference. Mixers can be smaller than a breadbox or larger than a station wagon, yet the latest addition to Hal Leonard's popular What's A . . . series will teach any studio maven how to master the fundamental tasks of the mixer: to process, route, combine and monitor audio signals. What's a Mixer? is an invaluable resource to keep close behind the boards.
Book Description
What are mixers? How do digital and analogue mixers work? How are they used in recording and live situations? It's all here, in simple terms.

This is a good serie's of books, they are small enough to carry anywhere and have enough information to get things running smoothly
Everything I my mixer manual didn't tell me........2003-08-30
This book is great. I am a home recordist. I have just recorded myself alone even though I have this big 48 track recording console. I had a few questions about the way stuff worked. How do you use the monitoring/auxiler channels to set up a headphone mix? This book answered that question and many more. It didn't seem boring, it was a 2-3 hour read, going from interesting topic to interestic topic. The book just seemed to explain everything I wanted to know, and touch up on it enough times to drill it into my ADD-injungled (is that a word?) brain. Like it had a little bitty live section that explained what engineers are doing when they ring out a PA, explained pink noise, and just about everything you could expect to see on any console. This isn't a book for those "wanting" to buy a console, or people who "think" they know the basics, you'll be lost and bash it. But if you already know quite a lot about signal flow, and CARE to learn more, you will absolutly love this book. I plan on reading again in a few weeks, there are a bazillion little tips that I am happy knowing before going into my first session with a band. This little-bitty book is supurb. NOTE: I found a lot of the material in this book at...The author is the leading writer for that magazine. For [$$$], you have no excuse why not to give this book a shot though!
Look Elsewhere.......2000-11-23
Paul White has a nice little earner going with these titles. They actually tell you very little specific, practical information about each subject. They do however contain a lot of generalisations which anyone with a slight understanding of audio engineering could come up with. The book on digital audio didn't even include a means of calculating how much disk space is required for digital audio files, something that is very important as well as fundamental to the subject. Every book also contains between 50 and 70 pages of the same glossary.
A must-have for the budding home studio owner.......2000-04-15
Paul White has written a small format, straightforward, up to date, no-nonsense book about mixing audio signals either in a studio environment or for live sound. Despite its diminutive size (this book will actually fit in any pocket), there is a lot of information presented in a logical and concise manner, with illustrations, a table of contents and a helpful 44-page glossary section at the end. It feels decidedly British in sentence structure and spelling ("equaliser" instead of "equalizer" etc.) The lack of an index is almost unnoticed, because of the logical flow of information; the table of contents helps in zeroing in on the precise location of the information being sought out. Being a part-time home recording hobbyist, this book has clarified several concepts in mixing for me. For just a little more than the price of a magazine, I wholeheartedly recommend this 207 page book to anyone interested in mixing live or studio sounds. By the way 1) the title of the book is actually "basic mixers" and 2) this is only one of a series of books from the same author on several topics in modern audio recording and production techniques (published in 1999-2000 by the British Sound on sound magazine). I am seriously thinking about getting a couple more of these guides...

Book Description
Popular Witchcraft: Straight from the Witch’s Mouth, inspired by the British Gerald Gardner’s Witchcraft Today, was the first book to be published on popular American witchcraft and remains the classic survey of white and black magic. Newly revised and updated for twenty-first-century readers, the author—an ordained but marvelously fallen exorcist—tells all about the evil eye, the queer eye, women and witch trials, the Old Religion, magic Christianity, Satanism, and New Age self-help.
Jack Fritscher sifts through legends of sorcery and the twisted history of witchcraft, including the casting of spells and incantations, with a focus on the growing role of witchcraft in popular culture and its mainstream commercialization through popular music, Broadway, Hollywood, and politics. As seriously historical as it is fun to read, there is no other book like it.

Spell Binding.......2005-06-17
Originally published in 1972, the second edition of Dr. Jack Fritscher's "Popular Witchcraft; Straight From The Witch's Mouth" is an intriguing read on many levels. Probably the most important is that, in this edition, Dr. Fritscher's notorious interview with the late Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey is published in full. LaVey is said to have thought this was his favorite published interview, and it is easy to see why. Dr. Fritscher allowed LaVey free range on a number of topics without condescending to the topic or gunning for the sensationalist angle. LaVey, relaxed by the situation, expounds on topics ranging from Governmental manipulation of minorities throughout history to why he thought Tuesday Weld was the perfect woman.
Then, towards the end of the book. Dr Fritscher prints out the text of interviews he'd conducted with other witches during the course of researching "Popular Witchcraft." These offer the most insight, as each of the interview subjects touch on topics most pertinent to them (and their thoughts on other witches, who, in LaVey's terms, are almost like rock stars). Out of the remaining interviews, the most interesting is Sabaean Pontifex Maximus Frederic De Arechaga. (Who, in Firstcher's terms, is a 'handful.')
In the book's meaty midsection, the topic of how witchcraft and all things mystic have infiltrated the modern world is laid out with a dizzying array of interconnecting pop cultural circumstances and historical facts. The main interlocking premise of which seems to state that gays and witches are primarily in the same boat. As oppressed minorities, both groups find themselves banished, censored and otherwise oppressed and scapegoated. Be they new agers, Satanists, Old Religion or QueerEvil eyes for the straight guys, you can always count on the eventual fear factor to come in with the censor scissors.
To that end, "Popular Witchcraft" is both important historically and seriously fun. After all, where else are you going to read about how witchcraft touches everyone from Andy Warhol to William Shatner?

STAR TREK CONVERSATIONAL KLINGON (Star Trek)
ASIN: 067174559X |
Book Description
The Klingon Dictionary is the first comprehensive sourcebook for Klingon language and syntax, including fundamental rules of grammar as well as words and expressions that illustrate the complex nature of Klingon culture. It features a precise pronunciation guide, rules for proper use of affixes and suffixes, and a small phrasebook with Klingon translations for essential expressions such as "Activate the transport beam," "Always trust your instincts," and the ever-popular "Surrender or die!"
Customer Reviews:
Very cool to have for any Star Trek fan........2007-08-24
This book is excellent. It has everything (and I'm not exagerating here) you need to learn Klingon. The information is well organized and it's easy to learn the basics. And the dictionary is quite large, so it's easy to translate just about anything you can think of. Some English-to-Klingon phrases can get confusing sometimes because the Klingon translation isn't word for word with English. So, if you're a big fan of Star Trek, or you want to learn another language, this book is a must have.
more of a reference than a learning guide........2007-06-03
This book is full of all the grammar and words you'll need to get a basic knowledge of Klingon, but it is all presented more as a reference. I've been through several languages, and while tools such as this are an indispensable aid to learning, they're not always the best way to approach a language. A textbook format learning guide would be better for a beginner, one that chops the vocabulary and grammar up into sections rather than presenting it all at once. But for what it is, it's great.
A Cool Reference To Have For Fans.......2007-04-15
This is a really cool book if you want to know what certain words are in Klingon, but to actually learn the language, it will take a lot of time. This book goes into great detail about how to pronounce words and where they belong in a sentence. This is like learning any other language, and it won't be easy to learn, but it is still really fun to have and read. I'm trying to learn, but it will take a while.
Great gift for a trekkie........2007-03-09
This was given as a gift and when opened was met with a "whoop." I guess that says it all.
What a find!.......2007-03-09
Fantastic! I bought 2... one for myself and another for a friend - you always need a practice partner when you decide to start learning a new language! What a hoot! Has great words, expressions and a section on the correct pronunciation of each 'letter'. Also includes a section on syntax and grammar. More than just a 'dictionary'!!
Book Description
Enormous expanses of the Internet are unreachable with standard Web search engines. This book provides the key to finding these hidden resources by identifying how to uncover and use invisible Web resources. Mapping the invisible Web, when and how to use it, assessing the validity of the information, and the future of Web searching are topics covered in detail. Only 16 percent of Net-based information can be located using a general search engine. The other 84 percent is what is referred to as the invisible Web-made up of information stored in databases. Unlike pages on the visible Web, information in databases is generally inaccessible to the software spiders and crawlers that compile search engine indexes. As Web technology improves, more and more information is being stored in databases that feed into dynamically generated Web pages. The tips provided in this resource will ensure that those databases are exposed and Net-based research will be conducted in the most thorough and effective manner.

Technical explanations for the truly web-savvy.......2006-02-27
The author is the unsurpassed guru of InterNet searching, and is explicitly relied upon by other authors engaging in the same work. His website is the mother lode of additional information, which is very helpful. If you have one book on your shelf regarding InterNet resources, this should be it. That said, Mr. Sherman relies heavily upon explanations of the breadth and depth of various resources; these explanations are designed to pique the reader's interest in further self-directed exploration, but may be more than the average searcher might need.
Worth It.......2005-09-04
Actually bought the book for my boyfriend who is currently working on my business website - he found the book very interesting and helpful.
Excellent instruction for librarians . . ........2003-06-12
I retired five years ago after thirty years in a very large public library system, and recently found it necessary to return to the trenches for awhile, in a rather smaller system. In that half-decade, of course, the Internet changed drastically and, even though I'm constantly online and intimately familiar with the major search engines (and many of the minor ones), there was a large number of new reference information sources with which I was not at all familiar. So I went looking for professional tools to remedy my ignorance. This is the first book I've seen in the publisher's "CyberAge" series, and medthodologically, it's quite good. As others have noted, the static nature of print-on-paper means rapidly outdated material, but Sherman and Price show you how to attack the problem, so, even though I came across several (unfortunately) extinct databases, I was able to locate several new ones, too. This is a terrific instructional work for reference librarians, and the accompanying web site is near the top of my bookmarks at work.
Great guide to out of reach resources.......2003-05-29
"The Invisible Web" is a thorough, thoughtful guide to finding information lying just outside the reach of search engines. It can be divided into two parts.
The first part describes the strengths and weaknesses of search engines as tools for finding information on the World Wide Web and provides a good overview of the technical and business limitations that lead to the weaknesses. At the same time, the authors also provide a high-level explanation of how search engines operate and a comprehensive explanation of what types of resources are left out of search engine indexes. Although this section is a bit repetitive, it also stands as the best explanation I have encountered on the subject of Web resource accessibility (and inaccessibility) through the popular tools that searchers have at their disposal.
The second part provides a list of Invisible Web resources (resources that can not be indexed by search engines), organized by subject, with annotations. I personally did not find this list comprehensive, but it is a good place to start for those who have previously relied solely on search engines and directories for Web searching.
If you want to understand what resources are just beyond the grasp of search engines, and get a hand on them yourself, "The Invisible Web" is a great book to get you started.
Note: some of the URL's sited in the second part of the book are now gone. This is not a criticism of the book, but a reflection of the ever-changing nature of the Web.
Good source, but slowly becoming dated.......2002-05-01
Its always risky to buy a web guide, when by its own omission, half of the web sites will be dead in two years. My own use of the web addresses in the book, found a few dead, but the author's "invisible web" web site had updated links. As search engines get better the current "invisible webs" becomes more visible, and are probably replaced with a new class of invisible webs. My own recent search was able to find many of the "invisible sites" in this book, so perhaps this book is best at giving you ideas of how to search better, for example if your looking for books search for "Library of Congress". In the context of where this review is, Amazon is a great translucent source for info on books.
