4 out of 5 stars Solid, good information.......2000-07-16

As a Certified Professional Resume Writer, I am always keen to keep abreast of new trends in the job-search industry. David F. Noble's Gallery of Best Resumes for People Without a Four-Year Degree is an excellent resource for both professionals like myself and the serious job hunter who needs direction on how to handle the specialized requirements of people who chose training that took less than four years to complete.

These people encompass a vast range of occupations from healthcare, paralegals, military, sales & marketing - and a host of others.

The book is well laid out and provides extensive, easy to read information for the person embarking upon the difficult task of putting pen to paper. It touches upon writing tips, job search strategies, grammar, spelling, design and layouts. "The Gallery" ventures into Part 2 of the book. Resume samples produced for "real life" people by leading professional resume writers, are grouped in categories. At the end of each resume, notes regarding style, margins, font use and reasons behind the layout and wording selection are provided.

While you won't find 50 examples of your particular job discipline, you will find a range of styles, approaches and formats that will appeal to you, and that you'll be easily able to adapt to your own particular situation. Looking at the examples (over 200) you should be able to learn the art of communicating your strengths in a variety of ways.

Cover letters, a vital part of a application process have not been forgotten. Towards the conclusion, the author provides excellent assistance in helping you produce a cover letter that speaks volumes of your ambition and strengths. 30 samples are included from cold approaches, networking and responses to newspaper advertisements - once again, allowing you to choose the type of approach that fits your situation comfortably.

The Contents page is a vast improvement over the previous offering "Gallery of Best Resumes", now ensuring quick and easy location of the samples needed.

All in all, a solid informational resource mirroring up to the minute trends, that I can highly recommend. A must for the job seeker's bookshelf.

This is a very helpful book for all those that are looking for some way to make a difference. You don't have to go out and do something huge to make a difference. Give someone a few cents if they're short in the checkout line, especially if it's a child. Say hello to someone. Wish a teller, clerk, cashier, etc a good day with a smile. Tell someone they did a good job, or you like their necklace, shirt....

You get the idea.

This book is the right size to take with you on commutes, or to the dentist or doctor's office to read while in the waiting room.

It's a quick, easy read for those that like the feeling of accomplishment at having read a whole book somewhat quickly. It's a good book to read with your child, or let your child read to you.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, leisurely study of the principles of musical harmony and scales.......2006-07-16

Part 1 discusses how tones may be perceived as built up by the base tone and the "harmonic upper partial tones". These upper partial tones are what distinguishes different instruments and they determine the "quality of the tone"; e.g. "if only the unevenly numbered partials are present ... the quality of the tone is hollow, and, when a large number of such upper partials are present, nasal", etc. (p. 119). Helmholtz's model of the ear has it that there is a spectrum of hairs in the ear, each with its own mode of vibration. When we hear a tone it is decomposed into its partials through "sympathetic resonance" of the corresponding hairs, and it is this information--i.e. essentially Fourier coefficients--that is sent to the brain. Part 2 discusses the theory of consonance. Again, the Fourier analysis point of view is the key. The consonance or dissonance of two tones is determined by the interaction of the partials of the tones, giving mathematical precision to the idea that "two consonant tones flow on quietly side by side in an undisturbed stream; dissonant tones cut one another up into separate pulses of tone" (p. 226). Thus one can claim that "ultimately, then, the reason of the rational numerical relations of Pythagoras is to be found in the theorem of Fourier, and in one sense this theorem may be considered as the prime source of the theory of harmony" and so "the enigma which, about 2500 years ago, Pythagoras proposed to science ... 'Why is consonance determined by the ratios of small whole numbers?' has been solved by the discovery that the ear resolves all complex sounds into pendular oscillations ... and that it regards as harmonious only such excitement of the nerves as continue without disturbance" (p. 229). Part 3 studies scales; quoting from the conclusion: "the construction of scales ... is a product of artistic invention, and by no means furnished by the natural formation or the natural function of our ear, as it has been hitherto most generally asserted. Of course the laws of the natural function of our ear play a great and influential part in this result; these laws are, as it were, the building stones with which the edifice of our musical system has been erected, and the necessity of accurately understanding the nature of these materials in order to understand the construction of the edifice itself, has been clearly shewn by the course of our investigations upon this very subject. But just as people with differently directed tastes can erect extremely different kinds of buildings with the same stones, so also the history of music shews us that the same properties of the human ear could serve as the foundation of very different musical systems." (p. 366).

5 out of 5 stars Good, but very old; read Jeans instead (or something modern).......2006-04-05

This book is of historical interest only, I think; it's very well written, but a lot of its content is mind bogglingly outdated, ancient. If you need a readable quick intro into sound, read Jeans's book (the first part of it is updated Helmholtz). Then, if you still need to (as in "know specifically what I'm after and it can be found only in Helmholtz"), you can pick this book; but otherwise, resorting to modern literature will be a much better investment of your time.

              5 out of 5 stars Misprints........2001-07-28

              I found two misprints:

Page 412, last equation on that page, x_2 = -b/(2a). ... : On the right-hand side, there are five terms. Terms number 2 to 5 have to be multiplied by b. In term number 3, replace u^2 by v^2.

Page 417, second of the two equations, r_p = 16 B' B" . ... : The second of the two brackets in the denominator must be squared.

These two misprints occur also in the German original, possibly since 1863.

              5 out of 5 stars I concur........2001-03-28

This is worthwhile for the reasons already cited (so I need not rehearse them), but it is important to recognize that much of it has been superceded or disproved. I hope those prospective purchasers who have found their way here are aware of Juan Roederer's THE PHYSICS AND PSYCHOPHISICS OF MUSIC--very much recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An undisputed classic in the science of hearing and music.......1999-04-22

Helmholtz's Sensations of Tone became an almost instant classic in the study of hearing when it was published in 1863. It combined the physics, physiology and psychological aspects of hearing in an attempt to explain the origins of musical harmony and dissonance. Though not easy reading, it is accessible to the non-specialist. However it also provides an important historical resource for the specialist and helps one to understand the origins of so much of contemporary hearing research. Indeed, in many ways Helmholtz reads more like a contemporary than a long-past founding father. The appendices provided by the translator are helpful as well. Finally, the inexpensive paperback edition from Dover makes this book an excellent bargain.

                5 out of 5 stars THE book.......2000-09-01

If you are a singing teacher, this volume is absolutely the most comprehensive exploration of internal sensations in the upper vocal tract that exists. E. Herbert Caesari was so far ahead of his time, we are just beginning today to understand the concept of what he called "air columns" in the vocal tract. The book is a "hard" read - but for the serious teacher who wishes to impart some useful info to his students pertaining to "what they should feel" when singing certain pitches and vowels, it is worth every moment of confusion. This is the teacher that Seth Riggs (the well known L.A. vocal coach) holds in deep respect. Caesari's book is not "up to date" in terms of "science" - but the underlying principles are unshakeable.(and, these principles are based on actuality - his terms are not) This is a must for the teacher who has had only "muscular" training and knowledge. It throws and entirely different light on the pedagogical process. Along with the Vennard book "Singing - Its Mechanism and Technique" and Richard Miller's numerous volumes on vocal technique, this book is a must have for the teacher!

                                Book Description

This book provides an overview of education as it is represented in popular culture, together with a framework through which educators can interpret these representations in relation to their own professional values and development. This framework also links the portrayal of teachers with on-going educational and political discourses.

Demonstrating how popular culture both reflects and constructs social and professional ideas about the teacher, the book looks at a number of themes central to current debates about education:

                                  Book Description

Getting a bunch of computers to talk to each other used to be tougher than getting a straight answer from a politician in an election year. .NET web services fixes that. A unique combination of technologies, the .NET platform for the first time makes distributed computing language independent, platform independent, and device independent. Which is a pretty big deal when you consider that applications built and run on the .NET platform are available any time, any place, and on any device—in other words, .NET equals total connectivity. It also means that developers for the Internet and intranets can now use Web services to include all kinds of amazing functionalities in a new program without having to reinvent the wheel and without needing to know anything about the business or complexity of the Web service he or she is using.

Ready to join the .NET Web services revolution? Then this book is for you. Written by bestselling computer book author Anthony Mann, it puts you on the fast track to developing amazing .NET Web serv ices. Here’s you chance to:

Written in an accessible, easy-to-read format, supplemented with dozens of screen shots and highlighted tips and shortcuts, .NET Web Services For Dummies covers all the bases for beginners and intermediate .NET users alike. Important topics covered include:

Your total guide to bridging the digital communications gap .NET Web Services For Dummies gets you up and running in no time with the knowledge and skills you need to develop sophisticated Web service applications on the Microsoft platform.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2005-04-03

I tend to rely on For Dummies titles to get me out of the starting blocks with the basics upon which a foundation can be built with more advanced tomes. I couldn't believe my luck when I found this in my local library but it was a huge dissapointment. It may be that the subject matter is not suitable to be "dumbed down". Either way this did not seem like a For Dummies book at all. It was intractable and went to suprising levels of detail on tangenital areas (eg ADO.Net).

What would have been the most useful parts of the book testing, deploying web services were marred by a complete dependence on VS .Net which I don't have.

I find this book has absolutely nothing to recommend it and am glad I didn't spend any money on it.

I got this book hoping it would help me figure out how to connect to and use a web service. I was new to asp.net and of course web services. My only previous knowledge of web services came from searches on the internet.

When I got this book I skipped everything and thumbed to Chapter 9 on consuming web services where I was able to see a useful and simplified list of steps to follow in Visual Studio that helped me to successfully use the web service.

Although the book describes ways to create and consume web services without using Visual Studio, I used it as a reference for use with Visual Studio. I was specifically having trouble figuring out how to include the web service in my Visual Studio project so I could reference the web service's methods. This book, through the simple list of steps (and helpful definitions of the steps themselves), helped me add the web reference to my project and use the web service's methods in my program. That was what I really needed.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2004-08-11

This book offers no step by step lessons which is to say the least VERY FRUSTRATING when you are learning a new technology. There are bits and pieces throughout this book that are nice to know but are absolutely useless when you cant apply them to a real world scenerio. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Just the right level for non .netters.......2004-06-26

This book was a joy to read and presented a great holistic approach to .net web services. By that I mean it covered the subject from A to Z including such relevant topics as firewalls, SSL, RAID, UDDI, etc. It is important to have an understanding of the whole infrastructure encompassed by .net web services.

I have a background in programming including some web development 4 years ago (prior to .net). Yet I found the book very informative and am thankful I got over my 'a dummy book is not for me' attitude. For example, the author did a history of COM, DCOM, COM+ in nutshell that really helped explain the problems web services solved.

The book goes into web services development in enough detail to get you started coding. For serious development you would want a more detailed reference but this is a great starting point.

The author has demonstrated an excellent grasp of the web development landscape and put it all together in a cohesive fashion. If you want to find out what the .net furor is all about I highly recommend this author.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2004-03-20

Despite the previous reviewer's assertion that this book is too advanced for the "dummies" line, I am sure that if you read this book *closely* all of your basic questions would be answered. I actually think the author did an amazing job of incorporating and summarizing much of what seems like an insurmountable topic,.NET, XML and Web Services, in one book.

Kudos to the author. I highly recommend this book for .NET overview and intro to web services. It will even have you constructing, debugging and deploying them in no time.
