Customer Reviews:
Very unique - truly helpful.......2001-08-29
A very thorough guide to applying to business school. It provides excellent information about the internal workings of the admissions process as well as thought-provoking guidance to help you through the essay writing process. It also provides good insight on the types of things to consider when choosing the business schools you want to apply to.
complete guide to the true north.......1999-11-09
The best part, I think, is the essay chapters. It tells you what do the admission officers really want to know in each type of essay questions. For example, the ethic question is different than legal issues. Anything illegal is clearly not a good topic to write in ethic essays.

This helpful guide targets courses and extracurricular activities that prepare applicants for law school as well as tells how to choose a law school that matches applicants' interests and aspirations.

Borrow This Book At the Library!.......2003-04-03
I went to the library and went through pretty much the whole book. There really isn't anything unique this book has to offer, as most of its tips are rather practical and known.
The longest section of the book deals with the LSAT. The advice in this section mirrors what you would read when you register with the Law School Admission Council -- when the LSAT is administered, when you should take it, how to prepare, etc.
The most helpful section in this book discusses the value of volunteering during college, or doing internships with the local attorney's office. However, you can read this section at the library in less than 15 minutes.
I do not recommend buying this book. If you are really curious about its contents, just go to your library and check it out.

Book Description
Throughout recorded history, labor to produce goods and services has been a central concern of society, and questions surrounding the terms of labor—the arrangements under which labor is made to produce and to divide its product with others—are of great significance for understanding the past and the emergence of the modern world.
For long periods, much of the world’s labor could be considered under the coercive control of systems of slavery or of serfdom, with relatively few workers laboring under terms of freedom, however defined. Slavery and serfdom were systems that controlled not only the terms of labor, but also the more general issues of political freedom. The nine chapters in this volume deal with the general issues of the causes and consequences of the rise of so-called free labor in Europe, the United States, and the Caribbean over the past four to five centuries, and point to the many complications and paradoxical aspects of this change.
The topics covered are European beliefs that rejected the enslavement of other Europeans but permitted the slavery of Africans (David Eltis), British abolitionism and the impact of emancipation in the British West Indies (Seymour Drescher), the consequences of the end of Russian serfdom (Peter Kolchin), the definition and nature of free labor as seen by nineteenth-century American workers (Leon Fink), the effects of changing legal and economic concepts of free labor (Robert J. Steinfeld), the antebellum American use of the metaphor of slavery (David Roediger), female dependent labor in the aftermath of American emancipation (Amy Dru Stanley), the contrast between individual and group actions in attempting to benefit individual laborers (David Brody), and the link between arguments concerning free labor and the actual outcomes for laborers in nineteenth-century America (Clayne Pope).
Book Description
Great writing is timeless, and so it is with Deja Reviews. Fifteen years later, five years, no matter how "old" her review, no matter how dated the topic of an essay, readers of this hearty collection will find that Miss Florence King's sharp, crafted prose still dazzles, sizzles, and edures, which is why she finds herself in the exclusive company of great American writers and humorists, such as Dorothy Parker, H. L. Mencken, and Westbrook Pegler, renowned for not suffering fools gladly.
Deja Reviews is a compilation of the book reviews and essays Miss King wrote between 1991 and 2002 for National Review and The American Spectator. It is a joy—a duty! a service!—to republish these treasured pieces...
Customer Reviews:
Thank you, Miss King!.......2007-01-04
I've long described Florence King as my favorite living writer (my favorite writer, period, is Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, who -- probably not coincidentally -- also wrote for "National Review" for many years). Yet I have avoided reviewing her books here, not only for fear of not doing them justice, but also because so much of how I try to review books has come from reading Florence King's own reviews. At what point is the pupil ready to grade the master?
Reviews are an art at which Miss King excels, which is why I was so happy to discover an advertisement for "Deja Reviews" a few months ago. This volume is a wonderful companion to "STET, Damnit!," the collection of her "Misanthrope's Corner" columns NR published a couple of years ago. "Deja Reviews" assembles about five-dozen pieces from NR and "The American Spectator." Most of them are reviews, but there are also a number of non-review essays including some NR pieces that weren't in the "Misanthrope's Corner."
Miss King is sharp of eye, wit, and pen. She famously has no patience with idiocy, and best of all possesses a wonderful facility with the language. I was about to call it a "gift," but I imagine she might object, rightly, to that word: she has worked hard over many years to hone her skills. It's not a "gift," but the product of time, energy, and mental commitment. I remember her writing once in the "Misanthrope's Corner" that she turned down invitations to go on television to discuss one or another of her columns. "If I had anything more to say, I'd have put it in the piece." I so admire Miss King not only for what she writes, but also for the effort she puts into her writing.
Her effort and skill make for a great reading experience. You don't have to be familiar with the books she's reviewing to enjoy what she's written about them. These essays are up to her usual high standards for style, humor, and dead-eye insight. As with her earlier collection, there's no index in this book, but that just means I'll once again be filling the flyleaves with my own notations. I imagine I'll learn a lot more about the art of book reviewing, and have a wonderful, entertaining time doing it.
The American Writer Speaks Again.......2006-12-30
I discovered Florence King while taking a history class at her undergrad Alma Mater - American University in Washington D.C. - where one of her books, Southern Ladies and Gentleman was used as a primer of sorts for class covering the South since Reconstruction. I became a real fan of her writing and writing style, which is possibly the best in American publishing not only of our time, but of all time.
While her only fiction book was a let down, King excels as an essayist, critic and commentator of American life, politics and social comment. Her writing style is something that every person who takes pen to paper believes (mistakenly) that they are using - its concise wording gets to the point and almost jabs you in the eye with its simplicity and ability to convey her thoughts while changing your mind. Think of King as the ultimate guest at your dinner party of dreams, polite, but ready to snip any loose threads of conversation off lest they dangle in the air and cloud her view.
While I am loath to bring this name up, I will say that I believe Ann Coulter probably thinks that she is a writer on par with Ms. King. She is not. I do bring her name up for one reason: Coulter represents the opposite end of the spectrum on which King "write-fully" (bad pun intended) sits, making King the Grand Dame of true Conservative commentary and writing.
In reading King, park your political beliefs at the door and luxuriate in her keen eye for word usage, grammar and thought. If you are so foolish as to approach her writing with any preconceived notions as to your own beliefs, she will skewer you just as the dim wit that you you know you are not. King is not the type of person to suffer fools wisely.
If our national culture were really based upon the high lofty ideals that we think that it is, King would be a regular on Sunday morning political shows, putting their hosts in their place. But alas, America and Americans are a vapid lot, and thus we get what we deserve: Ann Coulter distracting us from her unfounded and outrageous opinions by wearing a little black dress like a hooker on her way home from a Saturday night job.
But we have King in print. While she doesn't enjoy the book sales that Coulter does, Kings works will bear the test of time and one day she will receive the type of honors due her as a real American treasure that she is.
Timeless, priceless, immortal.......2006-11-13
These are reviews you turn to over and over again, always with pleasure, always with astonishment. With forever the question: Just how did she turn that phrase that way and capture both the essence of the book and its aims and failures?"
In a better world, Stephen King would be forgotten and Ph.D.'s in literature would be written on Florence King's oeuvre, for her erudition is astonishing, and her work cries out for annotated editions. These collected reviews are no exception, for she tackles everything from history to feminism to biography (her review of Strom Thurmond's life is one of the finest sustained passages of prose in English belles letters). All extremely well written, all as funny as hell.
One peaks at her soul for a reincarnation of Rabelais and Voltaire, for she is as burlesque as the former, and as poignant as the latter. To be reviewed by Florence King is to cower in fear of a withering aside that will haunt you to the grave. I am sure those who have suffered here have even the typeface of more than a few of these sentences burned into their memory.
In summary, this is a work of timeless scholarship and an exemplar of American prose that should stand as a ready textbook for the art of the review. A joy, a revelation, a hearty laugh, a stimulated intellect, a new fact, a valued friend, a companion voice, a hope for the future, and a pleasure of spirit are all available to those who read Florence King. Book Description
How did a shy and conflicted young daughter of a minister become one of the most important and unique female musical voices for more than a decade? Pretty Good Years is a love story between a woman and a piano a romance between a musical prodigy and the rabid fan base that she never thought she'd have. It is the story of Tori Amos, a sophisticated singer-songwriter who drew inspiration from her life and turned them into vibrant art. Tori Amos defied conventional logic when her solo debut Little Earthquakes and its single "Silent All These Years" rocketed out of obscurity to become one of the musical benchmarks of the '90s. Despite never having had a great deal of radio play or a "hit single," Amos blew open the doors for intelligent, artistic women songwriters, while making the solo piano acceptable again for popular music. Pretty Good Years takes a look at the ups and downs of a visionary artist, a savvy businesswoman, a smart and slightly kooky personality, a loving mom, and one of the most passionate voices in rock.

A Pretty Good (But Nowhere Near Great) Biography.......2007-08-18
When I saw this biography, I thought it would be interesting, and I was right. This is ten years more recent than her authorized biography. I have my doubts that this one is authorized, but it was written by a person who gave an honest portrayal of Ms. Amos, being respectful at the same time.
One reviewer commented the biography was too subjective and spent too much time giving a song by song rundown of each of her projects. For most biographies, this would be valid. However, when one is dealing with a subjective field like music, and especially when one is dealing with an artist who is expressive both musically and lyrically, a more subjective biography is more acceptable. Tori's music and lyrics are so deep, it justifies a song by song analysis more so than other pop artists (including those like Madonna or even the Beatles). My only complaint is when biographer Jay S. Jacobs makes comments on people who voted for Bush (which I did twice, and gratefully), which wasn't really necessary.
Being a Christian, I would be more interested in reading about the comments of her parents on Tori's current direction (since she's a minister's child). I also am curious if Tori would have gone a different direction if she was introduced to CCM as a teenager, instead of leaning toward rock.
This biography did give me insight into Tori's personality, and doing so, it succeeded.
Tori is the Goddess,manifest!.......2007-04-10
This is a quick and fun read.It has some new info about tori, but it is really to short. It has some lovely pictures, but to few.If jacobs was going to write a biography of one of music's greatest and most innovative artists,he really should have put alot more care and effort into it.You would think,a real ewf would not have written such a short and sparse book.Even so,it is still fun to read, and a nice introduction to Tori for novices!
It does have some new more recent tori info, that alot of fans may find interesting.Tori is one of the most visionary artist in the world,a truely unique and individualistic artist, who writes extraordinarily beautiful and magical music, that millions have related to around the globe. If it wasn't for tori I would have commited suicide in the mid nineties.Thankyou tori, for sharing with us all your wisdom and your power!
Pretty Good Year.......2007-02-24
Every Tori Amos fan needs to own this book, every thing you ever would want to know about her life and her struggle to become a very large success is here.
A detailed look at her times and her trend-setting ways........2006-11-05
PRETTY GOOD YEARS: A BIOGRAPHY OF TORI AMOS provides a satisfying biography of a rock n roll gal who has a wide audience of fans and relatively few other biographical coverages to her name. From her achievement as the youngest child ever to be admitted to a world-renowned music school to her feminist roots, ability to question even counter-culture norms, and her varied musical compositions and directions, PRETTY GOOD YEARS is more than just a survey of Amos' life: it's a detailed look at her times and her trend-setting ways.
Unimpressive.......2006-10-08
I was excited to finally have a full length biography of Tori, but upon reading this book, I found myself disappointed. The content was fairly detailed, but early in the book, I began to be annoyed by some minor factual errors. As the book went on I found the unnecessarily subjective opinions of the author becoming more common, and was bored to tears as he went through a song by song description of every single album, saying what he viewed the songs were about (usually with some basis in fact) and his opinion. I never thought I could be bored by this subject matter. As a very avid tori fan, I knew I had to own it anyway, but if you are anything but the most obessive collector, just pick up Tori Amos: Peice by Piece and wait for a more specific biography to come out that will be more interesting.

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
From Cole's downfall and Phoebe's somewhat questionable fashion sense to the power of three in history and literature and a magical tourist's guide to the Halliwells's hometown of San Francisco, this clever, lighthearted essay collection offers a fun and funny look at the world of the WB hit series Charmed. Edited by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Crusie, these accessible and entertaining essays apply the wit and insight of one of today's leading romance authors to the stylish, occasionally campy fan favorite known for its scandalous outfits, revolving door of love interests, and the magical mayhem of three otherwise normal sisters who must fight against evil as they deal with the challenges of everyday life.

I love the charmed ones.......2007-05-16
I really thought it was different than it was. I found it a bit on the boring side and a bit of a mistake. The only interesting thing was it was about the charmed ones.
Totally Charmed:Demons,Whitelighters adn the Power of 3.......2006-03-16
I thought this book was good but it needed more about the show and less opinions. I would recommend this book to people who have follow the show but not for people that have not.
so not charmed.......2006-03-01
I found this book wasn't worth the money I paid for it. All it did was go on about how sexy Cole Turner and the older version of Chris was, what the girls were wearing and the power the girls have. But worse of all they did nothing but rubbish Leo and rave about women's lib. For me in the series, Leo is my favourite character, to me he makes the show, he shows the love he has for Piper and his two boys as well as fighting evil. He might be a whitelighter but to me he holds the family together, he's down to earth and trust worthy. As far as Cole goes if people only watch the show to see how sexy the men or women are then they're missing the whole meaning of the show! I have never liked Julian Mc Mahon even when he was in Home and Away. I think he loves himself and thinks he's just it! And frankly, he's nothing! Look what he did to his wife in real life? Married a few months and having an affair. They also wanted to get rid of Grams and the girl's mother and how glad they were that Prue is dead, I think the people who wrote this book are only interested in what is and isn't sexy and the power the girls have. They appear to have boring lives themselves and have to have television to have fantasies about what they're lives might of been. I mean if your a true lover of the show who cares who is better in bed a demon (Cole) or a whitelighter (Leo), or if Cole has a hairier chest than Leo? These people want Charmed to be a boring everyone's in bed soap opera or something similar. They aren't interested in the real meaning of the show! I have been too many charmed sites and hundreds of people have e-mailed these sites saying how upset they were that Leo is getting the axe. If amazon had zero then this is what I would of given this book, I found it very disappointing. I know my opinion doesn't amount to much, but I would suggest to others don't worry about getting this book because it isn't worth it if you are a true Charmed fan! Which these people who wrote in this book can't be! They're too busy living in the land of fairies!
Charmed & Dangerous.......2006-01-01
This book compiles a gaggle of essays on the facts, fans, flaws and fallacies of "Charmed." The chapters are written by a variety of fantasy, science fiction and romance novelists, modern witches, essayists, columnists, film critics, scientists and more.
The funny thing is, being a non-member of the "Charmed" fanverse, I expected to get bored with the book and quickly hand it off to another reviewer. But no, instead I found myself enjoying these deep, analytical explorations of a show I rarely watched. The hypotheses made and the arguments supporting them are interesting, and often quite fun. ("Charmed" fans must, by the show's very nature, have a good sense of humor, and that comes through in many of these essays.)
I can't say whether or not I'll become a fan of the show. But "Totally Charmed" has me wanting to turn on the television and give it a chance, and that has to be a victory for the writers.
Intellectual Fun.......2005-11-12
"Charmed" has always been a show that more than what it seemed. It was never really about 3 sisters with magical powers, but 3 sisters and their dynamic. That's one of the things that I loved about this book - it takes the ideas presented in the series over the course of the past 7 years (not including the current 8th season) and examine them. My favorite is the article discussing Piper's powers that both freeze and speed up time. Personally, I've always believed in magic, but I'm also aware that most of magic is just science. To learn that there is actually a scientific theory behind her power was absolutely fascinating.
So if you're looking for something a little different to read, pick this one up. You won't regret it.

The CD-ROM dosn't include any sample files.......2007-06-11
I installed the CD, but the 'VC++ Projects' folder is empty. It should include Allexamples.dsw and all the sample files as stated in Readme.txt.
Milestone in Generic Programming.......2006-01-11
Its amazing what is possible to do. Note to the wise: if you think something is impossible, you might be wrong. Often the limitations you face are not in the external reality, but are within your own mind.
This is one of those books which has expanded the limits of what was considered possible. For decades, nobody believed it was possible to write a fully generic, reusable graph library which didn't make some compromises in runtime or memory. After all, the graph abstraction is very general: anything from a toaster to a town could be a node in some graph--and each object has its own most effiicient representations. How could one library really deal with any arbitrary graph no matter what data structures were used to represent it?
Well, it can be done, and here, really for the first time in history, it has been done. Amazing. What's the catch?
Well, the catch is that its damn hard to learn how to use, especially for busy, middle-aged programmers who don't have as much time to keep current as they used to have in their 20's. The effort it takes to master these techniques is roughly equivalent to learning how to differentiate and integrate polynomials and trig functions. Expect to spend several 40-hour weeks reading this book if you really want to "get" it.
That being said, once you "get" it, a whole new wonderland of programming will be opened up for you. You'll never have to write another DFS algorithm or MST algorithm again--its already been done for you. The initial down payment is very steep, but programming at a higher level really does pay dividents in increased productivity and effectiveness. So buy this book, get partner to watch the kids for several weekends, and dig in.
And keep in mind--whatever impossible problem you're currently facing--it might not be as impossible as it seems.
Copy with no CD.......2005-10-06
This book is all wonderful, but my copy comes with no CD (reason for 3 stars). It refers me to the publisher web site, where I could not find the electronic version either. Being able to search the text and print out certain pages are real benefits for me, why do they decide to stop the CD? Anybody knows how to get the electronic version?
A fine addition for any STL/C++ programmer.......2002-04-22
The boost graph library extends the STL tool box of containers into graph containers. Wished for a general purpose graph? This is the place. Never studied graph's in a CS course, but know basic data structures like lists, hashes and trees? This is a fine place to start. The book goes from basic, what is a graph good for, (solving search, and routing problems) to what are the various drawbacks to the different approaches.
If you are used to using the C++ STL library you will feel right at home using this. (BTW this library works with MSVC 6.5)
Excellent book on applied graph theory with the BGL.......2002-02-07
I really like the BGL book!
What strikes me the most is the accessibility - the introductions hit the right key immediately, so there's really no need to keep reference material at hand. The samples are equally good, and they're the right size to be easily transformed into solutions to related problems. The book currently rests on my bedside table, and only my favorites make it there...
The Boost Graph Library is powerful, and the BGL book is an excellent companion for graph-related studies or real-world graph problem solving.
Room for improvements:
* The index
* Even more samples (maybe not so elaborate in the text, could be on the CD)
Finally: I like the book a lot, and even if you're not "a graph person", chances are that you will be after reading the BGL book.
I highly recommend it!
