nursing school help.......2007-06-12
Great book. Very helpful for nursing students.
Good Book.......2007-02-19
I liked the books honesty but it also was a bit dramatic. Things are probably not quite as bad as it says at times yet at other times I am sure it is for some people. The key to nursing is finding the area to go into that best fits your personality. The good thing about a nursing career is that there are so many diverse areas in the profession that you can take up.
disappointed.......2007-01-08
I bought this book wanting to find out a little more about nursing school before I started. I don't think it gave me any info I didn't already know except for the websites. That part of the book was good. I think this book would do a good job at scaring away individuals who are thinking about going to nursing school because it is somewhat negative in the fact that it says alot about being overworked as a nurse and stressed out constantly. I guess it's better to be honest about the profession than to sugar coat it.
Absolutely a nursing student must-have.......2005-05-23
I LOVED this book. It is well written, easy to read with a bit of humor thrown in. I am already finding myself turning to this book again and again as a resource. Along with advice on surviving nursing school and getting the most from your clinical experience, she goes into searching for that first job, resumes, and a little bit of everything. I really think she touches on everything. In addition, she lists many fantastic websites for everything from financial aid to nursing affiliations. She really covers all the bases. I can't say enough about it and think every nursing student should read this book.
Good High Level Overview.......2004-12-06
This book was a good starting point for me. I'm contemplating a career change to nursing having worked in IT for 19 years. Lots of useful quotes and advice from students, new grads and staff nurses. I liked the high level view and broad scope this book gave me.
Talks about multiple paths to RN: Diploma, Associate Degree (AD); also called ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing), and Bachelor Science in Nursing (BSN). Straightening out the acronyms is half the battle. No mention of LPN or LVN programs however, and thought that would have been helpful. It (LPN) would fall between Diploma and ADN programs I believe.
This is the 2nd edition. Click on the author's name to see the 1st edition for more reviews. I would suspect it is very similar. Note: You can look inside the 1st edition. The table of contents is very helpful.
One gripe I had was the price: $22.95, with No discount. So, consider used; 1st edition around $10, 2nd $18. Overall I thought the book was worth it and recommend it to prospective students.
Customer Reviews:
There is a newer edition!.......2004-06-01
I thought this book was amazing...it covered everything I needed to know and then some. One of my friends was ready to quit school until he got this book...he said it was like a (knowledgable) best friend sitting on the shelf!
Looking at the review below, there are some good concerns raised, but almost all of what the reader didn't like has been addressed in the second edition of this book which came out a few months or so ago. There are also some other cool features of the new book...like info on PDAs (my school requires 'em now)and all sorts of info on the nursing shortage.
It might be hard to find (because Amazon has the author's name messed up a bit!) but if you do a search by the title you can find the new edition.
Anyway, definitely purchase this book...the resources alone are worth the price!!!!
Helpful, but could be better.......2004-03-17
This book contained some useful information, but I feel that it just skimmed the surface and left some important questions unanswered. For example, in its discussion of the differences between the different types of degrees (diploma, AD, BSN), it would be nice to know: do nurses with BSN's make a lot more money? What is the average salary of a nurse with a bachelor's versus a nurse without one? Are BSN's better prepared to enter the workforce? Do community college nurses get more clinical experience than students in BSN programs? I'd also like to know: does an education at a prestigious, highly ranked nursing school pay off, or is nursing a field where a person would be just as well off attending an inexpensive local college? The book touched upon these questions, but really didn't provide any specific answers. I also feel that it would be helpful to know a bit more about what to expect academically in nursing school. The book emphasizes over and over again that there is a ton of work and it's all very hard, but what are the core nursing classes? What sort of material is studied in the classroom? Are there any books one can read before entering nursing school to prepare oneself (aside from books covered in prerequisite courses)? In terms of academics, what classes are part of a bachelor's program that are not included in an AD program? What specific procedures does a student need to know how to perform by the time he or she graduates? Are there any books available that describe these procedures?
I am left with many unanswered questions.
Best career guide I've read.......2004-03-10
I picked up this book to read during Spring Break while waiting to hear if I was accepted into an accellerated RN program. It was a great quick read, and I got a lot of great tips out of it. I have been taking pre-reqs, and had already decided on a program, so a lot of the beginning of the book was just a confirmation of what I had already been through.
The web-site listings are really great, especially the humor ones.
Awesome book for those thinking about nursing........2004-01-18
I'm a 27 year old husband and father thinking about entering an AD nursing program. As you can see, I'm not exactly the average prospective student here- nursing or otherwise. For this very reason I wanted to be sure I was on the straight and narrow path to making a wise decision regarding my future. Being an avid reader, the first place I looked was the book section here on Amazon.com. "How to Survive... Nursing School" seemed like an obvious choice to start with, and am I ever glad I did. Spun with wisdom and soft humor this book takes you from the early process of applying for school all the way to passing the NCLEX exam and looking for a job, with thought provoking reasons for becoming a nurse throughout. Most importantly, most of the helpful anticdotes are derived from current students from all across the country. They provide priceless and sometimes blunt facts about the nursing process, both pros and cons (mostly pros). I purchased this book with the idea of skimming certain parts I was interseted in, but ended up reading every last word.
If you are a nurse hopeful or already studying away, I strongly suggest this book as a starting point to a brighter understanding of the nursing world.
She knows what she's talking about!.......2003-12-14
I bought this book for a friend who will soon be going to nursing school. I have been through four nursing programs--LVN, ADN, BSN, and now MSN--and Kelli Dunham knows the rigors that nursing school places on your life. Students who have not been there cannot comprehend the demands that you place on yourself to succeed in nursing school. They also cannot comprehend how they can do poorly in nursing school when they have done so well in other subjects. I hope this book can help them make it through! Kelli offers suggestions for coping using humor, humility, and sensitivity and even applies the dreaded nursing diagnosis on a personal level. Wish this book had been around when I went through the first time!

Book Description
Lois Wille’s illustrated account provides behind-the-scenes insight into how a small number of Chicago business leaders transformed the dangerous and seedy South Loop into an integrated and thriving community in the heart of the central city.
The obstacles to the evolution of Dearborn Park were quite formidable, including a succession of six mayors, huge economic impediments, policy disputes engendered among people used to making their own corporate decisions, the wretched reputation of the South Loop, problems with the Chicago public school system, and public mistrust of a project supported by the wealthy, no matter how altruistic the goal. It took twenty years and millions of dollars, but it will pay off and in fact is paying off right now.
With Dearborn Park, Chicago left a formula that other cities can use to turn fallow land into vibrant neighborhoods—without big government subsidies. As Wille explains, the realization of this vision requires shared investment and shared risk on the part of local businesses, financial institutions, and government. It links private and public influence and capital. Wille explains how these elements worked together to build a neighborhood in a blighted tract of Chicago’s Loop. She also describes how key decisions affecting the public interest were made during a time of profound change in the city’s political life: Dearborn Park was conceived during the final years of the most powerful political machine in America and had to adapt as that machine crumbled and city government was reshaped
Customer Reviews:
Unique Perspective on Urban Development.......2003-03-30
Wille opens a window into the usually closed back room dealings behind major urban renewal projects. Having apparently unlimited access to the developers allows her to see the entire process of urban renewal from conception to fruition from the inside. The size of this project is unique for a private development: Dearborn Homes originally was meant to encompass the entire area directly south of Chicago's loop. Its backers were alos unique--the real movers and shakers of Chicago's business community between the late 60's and the early 80's.
The fact that deveklopment of Dearborn park spanned so many administrations in Chicago (including Daley I, Harold Washington, and Daley II) means that the politics involved were complex. Dearborn Park also became the focus of several intense community struggles--sometimes directly related to the development, and sometimes the development was only part of a much larger struggle over the general direction of development in Chicago.
The weakness of Wille's book derives directly from its strength. While Wille provides an unmatched view of the development porocess from the developer's prospective, Wille gives short shrift to the perspective of politicians and other City officials (who come accross as shallow people who stand in the way of the development for no apparent reason), and woefully short shrifts the very powerful grass roots movement which challenged the City's concentration on developing middle and upper income housing, at the expense of low cost housing.
Ultimately, Dearborn Park can only be understood as part of this larger debate on the direction of the City of Chicago. Wille has produced a book unmatched for its insights into the actions and motivations of one set of players in this debate--Chicago's major financial and real estate institutions. The book does not, however, tell the story from any other perspective.
A Must-Read for anyone who cares about our cities.......2001-06-28
This book is every bit as good as "Boss" without Mike Royko's acid pen. It should be required reading for urban planners, architects, city zoning officials, and anyone who thinks they know how people should live better than the people themselves.
It's a graphic depiction of how a wonderful, noble idea (the transformation of abandoned railyards and boarded-up industrial and skid-row buildings into the vibrant residential neighborhoods known as Dearborn Park and Printers Row) was nearly destroyed by partisan politics and petty differences. I had the opportunity to see the physical changes firsthand over the last 25 years, and they were painfully slow. I had no idea of the behind-the-scenes sleight-of-hand that made it all possible, and Lois Wille makes what could have been something boring into a page turner.
I won't give away the climax. I will say that the children of this brand-new central-city neighborhood were robbed, and "robbed" is the only word that adequately describes what happened.
If you're a longtime city resident you already care about our cities. If you're a NIMBY suburbanite or small-town resident, or if you live on a farm and can see the half-finished frames of yet another subdivision marching toward you, you should care. Why? When cities become unlivable and people pack up and leave, guess where they go?
Whoever you are, buy and read this book.
Great insight into the politics of urban renewal.......1998-12-31
I have loved every minute of this book. This is a great summary of the entire South Loop development, including Printers Row, Dearborn I and II, Central Station, River City...
What has been most fascinating is the insight into Chicago politics beginning with Richard M. Daley's administration and continuing to Richard J. Daley's current City Hall. Readers gain a real appreciation for what goes on in Chicago to get neighborhood projects developed and financed.
While certainly an informative read for South Loop denizens, this book offers great Chicago development stories that any Chicago area resident will appreciate. Plus, anyone that doubts the clout of City Hall in Chicago will quickly learn otherwise.

Very Smart .......2006-05-07
This entire series on smart guide is very well done. The material is presented in a easy to understand format and should be helpful not only to the student but also advanced reader. I use the entire series as a study in my studio recording class. If I could give it 10 stars I would.

Very good overview of Digital Music Overview.......2006-02-26
I have been recording and mixing with digital audio for about 7 years and this book was a great read for topics such as synchronization, data storage, sample rates/bit depths, and sound wave properties. If topics such as these have put you off, but you have had cursory interest in them, this book is a great overview for these topics in digital audio. What is also great about the book is that it is understandable, interesting, and enjoyable. The book is very up-to-date as of this review.
INCREDIBLE/HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-12-02
Let me start out by saying this book and the entire series deserves 6 stars, but the Amazon rating box only went up to 5. Whether you've been doing sound, music, engineering for a week or 20 years these books have something for everyone. The full color artwork is the best i've ever seen in any instructional book period. The companion dvd is fantastic, worth the price alone.Bill gibson does a great job with the subject matter and text,he covers the material thoroughly while making it easily understood. Highly recommend.

ok not great only thing I really use is the commercial skip code.......2007-04-25
Ok not great only thing I really use is the commercial skip code which you can find online anyway. If you know nothing about Tivo then this can be a handy reference but if you are more advanced then you can find more and better info on the web with a Google search. And if your that advanced you're probably not reading this review anyway. ;-)
Only the routine........2007-03-30
This book, while very informative offers no more information than the users manual. If you're looking for something more advanced look elsewhere.
thank goodness for this guide.......2005-11-08
Well written and detailed book. This text enabled me to easily upgrade my TiVo's disk, something my box's manual didn't go into in enough dept and simplicity.
many TiVo uses.......2005-01-22
You should find this an easy read, in learning how to effectively use your TiVo. The company has spent a lot of time in trying to make the user experience as simple as possible.
Carter gives hardware tips as to various accessory items you might want to hook up your TiVo to. Plus, you can find out how to use various listings offered by third parties. Notably AOL, which offers a neat Remote Scheduling of its TV listings. Talk about convenient.
For those of you with DVD players, and especially recorders, sections of the book describe how you can hook these up to the TiVo and get everything working with each other. And remembering that a TiVo is a special type of personal computer, you get instructions on how to upgrade its disk. Very good for the heavy user.

A Big Help.......2005-04-25
This book is the place to start if you don't know anything about Tivo. I certainly did not when I received a Tivo box as a gift. Figuring out how it would fit in with cable box, video tape recorder, and dvd player was daunting. The booklet that comes with the Tivo player is a good reference but Rathbone's book provides a much more readable explanation of how everything works. It not only provides clear explanations on how to set up the equipment in a variety of configurations but also explains how to get the most advantage from using Tivo. The setup and operating menus are covered as well as how to "educate" Tivo to go out and select programming most suited to individual taste.
This book would be most useful if read before first getting Tivo as it covers the different options available. Also it explains what upgrades are available along with the URL's for ordering upgrade parts.
The book is laid out with the clarity typical of the "For Dummies" line with clear diagrams, tables, and illustrations. I suspect some smart manufacturer might start including a copy right in the box along with the spare cables and fold-out assembly poster.
Title should be "Getting the Most Out of Your TiVo".......2004-09-18
An up-front caveat - I served as the Technical Editor for this book, so I can share the blame for any outright errors... I have no financial stake in sales of the book. That said, on with the review.
When I was first approached regarding "TiVo For Dummies", I was skeptical. I was an experienced TiVo user and I thought that the TiVo manual was pretty good. I wondered what such a book could add to be worth paying for. The answer turned out to be "a lot".
As easy as TiVo is to use, it is sufficiently different from the familiar VCR as to confuse many who are new to the concept of a PVR. I have seen many newcomers to "The TiVolution" plea for help with such subjects as: wiring to an existing system, setting up a Season Pass for unusual situations, tweaking the TiVo's settings to match personal preferences, using the networking options and expanding storage capacity. Andy Rathbone covers all these topics and more in a breezy, comforting style that is never condescending (the "For Dummies" in the title is not to be taken literally.)
"TiVo For Dummies" opens with a helpful introduction to the world of PVRs, and TiVo in particular. TiVo is a hard thing to explain to someone who hasn't used one. "It's a VCR with a hard disk!" Yawn. "Pause Live TV!" In the past, this has been argued as a big selling point of TiVo, but to my mind, it is one of the less interesting features. "Record your favorite shows, no matter when they're on!" Now you're talking. "Record shows you like that you didn't even know were on!" Say what??? (This is one of my favorite reasons to love TiVo.) Rathbone explains TiVo in a way that most readers will "get" - a worthy result in itself.
After discussion of the various types of TiVo boxes, the book walks you through installation and setup, with detailed explanations of many different configurations that go far beyond the manual's "reference book" approach. Next comes the most useful part - how to best take advantage of TiVo's many features to enhance your life. Really, most people who have TiVo will tell you that it makes TV so much more enjoyable, especially as you are freed from the tyranny of the networks' schedules. Rathbone illustrates clever uses of TiVo's options, some I had never considered before.
The next several chapters cover the TiVo Home Media Option (HMO), which uses a network connection to share recorded shows with other TiVos in your house and to view pictures and listen to music stored on your PC. At the time the book was written, HMO was an extra-cost option, but now it is free with the standard service. Rathbone walks you through setting up the network and enabling the feature, and then discusses various TiVo and non-TiVo tools for sending pictures and music to the TiVo.
The last major section of the book talks about upgrading the disk space on a TiVo, (easy to do if you are comfortable with adding a disk to a PC), and troubleshooting common problems.
The book ends with a collection of short chapters filled with tips and tricks, and some reference material, such as the differences between TiVo and a generic PVR.
If you are looking for information about "hacking" your TiVo, modifying it to do strange new things, this book is not for you - there are a couple of other good books on that topic, such as "Hacking TiVo" by Jeff Keegan. But if you are relatively new to TiVo, "TiVo For Dummies" will significantly enhance your TiVo experience and will reduce, if not eliminate, the small frustrations that some run into. Giving TiVo as a gift? "TiVo for Dummies" makes a great accompaniement!
And if you don't have a TiVo yet - read this book and see what you're missing! Chances are, you will soon be joining the TiVolution on your own.

This book runs 200 pages, and for the most part,
consists of generally available information, common
sense (e.g. "don't carry your social number with you")
and a lot of info from newspapers, I would guess.
Next, it carries a few chapters on how to handle
a scenario wherein, you are victimized by ID theft,
and what to do about it, who to speak to, call, visit,
etc. This might be of value to the reader, whereas,
the other parts, can be obtained from general knowledge,
off the internet, reading the papets, and so on.
Some info might be incorrect, such as " You have 60
days to dispute a charge from when you receive the
monthly invoice". Is it 30 or 60 days ? It might depend
on your country, state, or territory of residence.
At over $10, I would consider the book overpriced....

There's an old joke about two campers who hear a menacing bear in the woods. One camper asks for the other's sneakers. "You can't outrun a bear", he is told. The first camper responds, "I just need to outrun you". This book will give you sneakers. It will make you a harder target for those people who want your good name and money, because having read the book, the author's recommendations will henceforth seem just good common sense. One day I was walking my dog and bent over to pick up a torn copy of my wife's brokerage statement that had blown half a block from our trash barrel. Get a shredder! Some companies may even allow employees to add their own documents to their secure disposal service bins for sensitive data marked for destruction. Mail that has our names, birthdates, social security numbers, account numbers, etc. can be used by others with fraudulent intent to open accounts for their benefit. Many of us have seen our credit reports, but did you know that a combined report from the three major credit agencies is available and why it might be important to see this side-by-side comparison? Bottom line: If you are a victim of identity theft this book will give you practical advice on who to contact and what forms to fill-out. The information in this book is important and it is presented in a straightforward, highly-readable format. (Editorial note: Chapter 15's "Ten Common Scams..." lists the "Nigerian letter", but neither it nor its more recent email mutations are discussed in what follows.)
AN EASY/MUST READ !.......2004-12-02
Althought I've never personally been touched by the horror of I.D. Theft I have heard far too many stories on the subject. Over the years I've collected a number of books, tapes, cd's, etc. on the subject ( alot of work) and I'm glad that Mr. Arata has taken on the challenge of putting together the PERFECT reference book.
This books contains everything you need (in one place) to better position yourself against becoming a victim. The information is presented in language you can understand and apply immediately. If this book had been available when I first started collecting information, my collection would be housed in the form of this book and this book only. IT HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED! Way to go MR. ARATA.
