Great Advice.......2007-08-15
The type of real world advice varies from humorous to very practical. Many topics that recent graduates face are discussed, including traveling and the workplace. If you want even more details about finances after college, then another book entirely devoted to it will be more useful. However, I still give this book my highest recommendation!
Lots of advice and easy to read. Love it!.......2006-04-04
There are a lot of questions after graduation! It's nice to see that so many people feel the same way as I do. In this book, I can learn from their mistakes as well as from their good choices. The advice is totally varied (don't expect one expert opinion on what to do). It's also an easy read - you can start on page 120 or page 1. You don't have to read it in order since the advice is divided into sections; job, love, finance etC. Also, there are some good resources in here. Who knew that a discount on the Eurrail Pass is possible until the age of 26? (I thought it was over once you lost your student card) I'm glad I read this before my trip to Europe this summer!
Funny and practical.......2006-03-29
Some of the advice in this book is really funny, but most of the book has helpful suggestions, information and resources for the reader to use. I had a party last week and actually followed the 'grown up' party suggestion page. I felt a little lame doing that, but nobody knew : ) The job stuff is helpful, too. I'm studying the what to look for in a job and how to impress pages now...
Great gift item.......2006-03-24
I saw a review copy of this book at an event and this is such a fun gift for a grad. It's full of practical advice (how to write a cover letter, what to do in a job interview, how to deal with a car salesman, where to find a date etc). I actually keep reading it (so it's starting to look used) so I may have to buy another copy for my brother!

Not too good.......2005-11-19
Not too good of a book. I'd suggest using this as a general idea, but get other, bettter books.
Some good advice.......2005-05-04
Got this book from a friend...all in all, i liked it. especially the part about playing office politics. pretty funnny, cuz i'm in entry level hell and this helped me through some issues...also liked part about dating after college. it's true, we kind of think dates will just appear, but you have to actually work on that kind of stuff. i'd recommend it.
I really don't like it.......2003-09-14
This book really is not very good. It is depressing, and it talks down to you like you really have NO idea what is going on. It makes life after college look just awful.
Irreverent and funny.......2003-08-15
I'd like to meet the guys who took such issue with this book. It's called a sense of humor. Some of the reviewers should look into it. The authors cover a vast range of topics and granted, they do it with a light touch, but that's what makes the book so readable, informative and entertaining.
Thoughtless.......2003-05-04
If Earth wasn't your birthplace, then the chances of you getting something out of this book just crept up to slim. The narrow-minded advice presented in this guide is nothing spectacular and will probably insult your intelligence.

Effective Job Search Method & Interviewing Techniques.......1998-02-03
I bought this book in December, two weeks before graduation, without a job lined up and no idea how to get one. I followed the techniques described in Life After College and had 6 good job offers by January 16. It helped me figure out what kind of companies I would like the most and how to get their attention.

What's the deal with work after college? It's one of the most basic of assumptions that after you graduate you'll find a job, have free time in the evenings instead of having to study or write papers, and enjoy plenty of money to support your new carefree existence. Not. It takes market savvy and job-seeking skills as well as perseverance, talent, and being at the right place at the right time.
Lester, Wyke, and Rousseau can't provide you with determination or ability--these are skills and traits that you ideally polished up during your college career--but they can teach you about something most colleges neglect: what jobs to seek out and how best to apply for them. They cover crucial topics like how to evaluate yourself, what kinds of personality traits work best with which jobs and environments, and how to match your traits and skills with the job market. They help you get organized and devise a job-hunting strategy, discuss all facets of writing your résumé and cover letter, and delve into the interview process as well. Then, having led you through the process of getting a job and discussing the issues of signing contracts and starting to work, they do something revolutionary and inspired in a job-seeking guide--they talk about finances. The authors include chapters on budgeting and saving, paying back student loans and building a credit history, getting insurance and paying taxes, and even touch on investing and retirement accounts. With a terrific reference section of Internet resources for everything from career centers to apartment rental sites, and a CD-ROM version that facilitates access to the specific information you seek, this is a tremendously useful guide to life after college. --Stephanie Gold

Should have been a college class!.......1998-06-06
I just bought and used portions of this book. I found it to be extremely helpful in my post graduation job search. I had no idea there was such a straight forward and effective method for putting my degree to work.
Thanks Margot!

Once again, an excellent guide from Real Life Guides.......1998-04-01
The good folks at Real Life Guides have once again delivered an excellent "tour guide" for life after college. Margot Lester and her colleagues provide an excellent resouce for the career and financial issues that leave many in the twenty-something crowd perplexed - and it is enjoyable at the same time.

The story of two commissions (The Commission on Foundations and Private Philanthropy, 1969-1970, founded by John D. Rockefeller III, and The Commission on Private Philanthropy and Public Needs, 1973-1977, headed by John H. Filer) that had a major impact on philanthropic activity and public policy.

So That's Why We Keep Volunteering.......2002-03-06
Again, Eleanor Brilliant gives us a no-nonsense look at American charitable enterprise and the people who run it. As events and actions of leaders give frequent rise to questions about the caliber and integrity of Americans' non-profit way of serving others, she provides a well-researched analysis of information that people who give their time and money ought to know. Since most don't, the leaders of the agencies to whom they give ought to read this excellent work to become familiar with information important to their constituents.

A book fit for kings and queens.......2007-02-19
You may have seen images from The Lover's Path, and read descriptions of it, but that won't prepare you for the impact of holding and opening this astonishing object for the first time. I've never seen anything like this book before. It's so much more than the sum of its parts - and heaven knows, the parts are absorbing enough in themselves. Far more than an illustrated book, it offers its reader an experience that's not just literary, not just visual, but tactile as well. Reading the book involves not only attending to the words and images on the page, but physically unfolding a letter inserted among the pages, or removing Tarot cards from an envelope. And these things feel so right in their context. As I read, I'm conscious of the feel of the pages and the curiously solid, comforting weight of the book, in a way that isn't distracting but seems an integral part of the process - an imaginative extension of the reading experience. It's intensely personal. I know that this is a commercially produced book; but it feels like a hand-crafted private press book feels. It sings quietly in the hands.
I found the book invited me to linger over the illustrations and the beautifully designed pages, rather than rush through the story. I read it slowly, only a chapter at each sitting, immersing myself not only in the world of 16th century Venice, but in the luxurious physical presence of the book and its contents. To own this book is the kind of privilege that once only kings and queens could have known. Here, today, it can be had by anyone for a few dollars.
To truly love another ..........2006-11-19
Artist/author Kris Waldherr has gifted her readers with a world of mythic proportions in this work. You will feel that you are in sixteenth century Venice, walking along side the famous courtesan Tullia Ziani, and her talented younger sister Filomena - the Nightengale.
Woven into this feminist tale are the romantic myths of Beatrice and Dante, Danae and Zeus, Tristan and Isolde, the swan maiden, Psyche and Cupid, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Isis and Osiris.
Through well written words, stunning graphics, maps and letters - we enter another world, one of beauty and grace, but one that is also inhabited by sorrow and tragedy. As for those letters - in a very unique device, Waldherr presents us with several envelopes containing the letters referred to in her story, as part of the book. The reader is also gifted with the cards drawn for Filomena in a Tarot reading.
From the superb quality of the illustrations, to the gilt edged pages, the wonder maps, and the depth of thought presented here - this is a "must have" book for all who would follow the Lover's Path!
Beautiful in more ways than one.......2006-09-28
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen, one of the most romantic, and at the same time contains strong female characters and historical accuracy. As a visual artist myself I know what went into this--years of meticulous research, endless revisions, and a huge wallop of talent. The reproduction is exquisite, leather-bound, gold stamping, and amazing extras like envelopes that open with separate letters that come out. In addition to the gorgeous artwork the story itself is compelling, both sad and hopeful, a moment of respite in our jaded world. Illustrated novels of this quality are hard to find. Take my advice and buy this book; you'll enjoy it and it makes a great present.
A Beautiful Book.......2006-03-30
This is one of the most beautiful, clever, and unique books it's ever been my privilege to own. It will transport you into a different world and a different way of viewing the universe.
Nice combination of a pretty story and beautiful art.......2006-01-15
I like this book. No, it's not the deepest thing you'll ever read, nor is it what I would call great literature, but it is a fun and engaging story. It is a historical romance set in sixteenth-century Venice with the kinds of exotic elements I love, like beautiful palazzos, walled gardens, and forbidden love. But what makes the book particularly enjoyable and worthwhile is its premise. There is a prologue supposedly written by the curator of a museum housed in the heroine's former palazzo. The museum is dedicated to the life of this woman and the story is put forth as a reissue of a book that was written by the protagonist in her lifetime. Now, for the fun part - the book is full of things like little letters that you can open and read, some tucked inside pretty little envelopes that are glued into the book. There are maps and supposed portraits of the book's main characters, all of which are supposed to be facsimiles of items in the museum's collection. Besides all of this, the book itself is beautiful, full of the author's illustrations. The pages have gilded edges and marbled borders. It is truly a work of art, which gives the book far more value than does the story alone. The book is a light, quick read, but it is these unique features and the lovely art that will make me treasure it.
Book Description
The Ramones' music has influenced nearly every power pop, punk, alternative, and metal band. Monte A. Melnick served as The Ramones tour manager from their early New York club days in the '70s to their farewell gigs in 1996. Filled with memorabilia including photographs and interviews collected along the way, this is his view of life on the road with the band as "babysitter to psychiatrist, booking agent to travel agent, paymaster to van driver." http://www.ontheroadwiththeramones.com

Johnny.......2007-01-27
The more I read and learn about Johnny, the more complicated and intriguing I find him. It could be easy to dismiss him as a jerk but then something like the "milk and cookies every night" story comes up and endears him to you.
Entertaining, sometimes hilarious, but not "user friendly".......2007-01-03
The book is entertaining, and I am glad I bought it and read it. Many passages/statements in the book are hilarious (to me).
Think about these dynamics: Take the 4 (original) band members, who are the only ones that truly were The Ramones, in my opinion: 1 had an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. 1 is Bi-Polar, which is usually called Manic-Depressive. 1 would often be so stressed out that he would simply leave the band. 1 was a taskmaster. (You can find out whom I am referring to if you read the book.) Oh, you need to add in a man who was with them the entire time that The Ramones were together. Add the other "distractions" that the Ramones and their entourage indulged in and remember that this band played over 2,000 concerts in 20+ years period, and you can just imagine the problems they faced, the interesting things they experienced, etc al.
My only criticism of the book is that it is not "user friendly." There is no index, glossary, etc. Had it been "user friendly," I would have given it 5 stars.
If you get one ramones book..........2006-12-20
I'll keep this quick. This book is very nicely done and has the benefit of Mr. Melnicks archivism. It is not sensational, it is true, and it is written by a guy who was there end to end. If you only want to get one Ramones book this is the one.
An important chronicle of one of the most important bands in rock history.
REAL insight into the band.......2006-11-14
I've read both the Ramones books out so far("An American Band" and "Hey Ho, Let's Go") as well as Dee Dee's two memoirs, but I think Monte's book - which is really an oral history - is actually the best in terms of shedding light on the band's history and personalities. To his credit, everyone gets a fair chance to tell their story, even when it conflicts with someone else's. And many of the stories and photos are something that only an insider like Monte could put on paper. One unfortunate byproduct of the book is that my opinon of Johnny as a person has sunk. While his near-militaristic running of the band was often necessary for them to survive as a unit, he comes off as an angry, bitter man (both in his own words and those of others) who could have certainly been better to his bandmates and the Ramones support crew.
A Book Written By One Who Was There!.......2006-08-05
This is an incredible book. Based around the story of Monte A. Melnick, tour manager (and much more) for the Ramones throughout their entire career (1974-1996, and 2,263 live shows), this is actually a superb piece of punk oral history. As well as the voices of Monte, and many of the Ramones (Johnny, Marky, Tommy, CJ and Joey), there's their crew - the road-dogs - the roadie's, lighting guys, sound man, etc., etc. An incredible band, a great story, a wonderful read, and a real insight into the Ramones, and life on the road - sex, drugs, rock n roll, of course, but also the binges, fights, breakups, arrests, OD's, girlfriends, humor, hilarity, boredom, fans, and work ethic. Packed with personal photos and memorabilia this is a must-have for all fans of the Ramones.

Book Description
This volume of recent Signs articles offers some of the most significant contributions to the debates on history and theory. Illustrating the uses of theories in recent feminist historical research and the often contentious arguments that surround them, the articles speak to a number of discussions, including the theoretical tradition of political economy, the importance of class relations for understanding historical events and social relationships, and the expansion of concepts from political economy to include race. Included as well are the workings of gender signification in terms of the body, moving it from its traditionally lesser position in the hierarchical Enlightenment mind/body split. A further group of articles concerns the discursive character of power relations and the dialogic quality of language. The volume will be extremely useful for feminist historians in a variety of disciplines as well as women's studies students interested in issues of interdisciplinarity.
Sixteen articles include contributions by Karen Anderson, Josephine Donovan, Nancy Folbre, Evelyn Nakano Glenn, April Gordon, Luise White, C. Fred Blake, Antoinette Burton, Jane Desmond, Nancy M. Theriot, Kathleen Canning, Sueann Caulfield, Lisa Duggan, Nancy Fraser and Linda Gordon, Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, and Sandra R. Joshel.

Customer Reviews:
Overpriced, misaligned, bloated + boring = 2 stars.......2006-07-13
I gave this book 2 stars because it's overpriced, misaligned, bloated and quite boring. Lots of time, Kramer used 200 words to explain something when 50 would have been enough. There's alot of minor errors + many cases where the author is completely wrong. The content covers CISA's material but it simply does not match with CISA's domains. If I had to throw a stone to someone, that would be to the editor cos that guy simply did not do his job. There's way too many content errors, spelling mistakes and ambiguous sentences.
To wrap thing up, it's a subpar book with an hefty price tag. I would NOT recommand it to anyone taking an ISACA exam. Your $$$ would be better spent buying the official CRM 2006.
Obtuse and perhaps worthless.......2005-05-13
Why use 1 word when 12 will bewilder the reader and make the book that much thicker. I can not believe that a qualified editor reviewed this book.
The wheat to chaff ratio is horrendous. You can go whole paragraphs without coming upon anything worth knowing.
I can only hope that the actual CISA exam questions are not written as poorly as the sample questions within this book.
If you value your time, do not buy this book.
Don't waste your money.......2005-03-05
I purchased this book -- unfortunately before I read the reviews here -- to prepare for the CISA. Despite the optimistic title, the book fails to deliver in just about every area. The book is not connected to the exam in any logical form or structure. One of the biggest draws for a book like this is the practice test software. Sadly, this book fails yet again. The software works, but the questions in some cases are just plain wrong! I wrote to the editor and they offered me an errata sheet that I could use to spot mistakes in their data???? What good is that? My advice is that you skip this book, avoid this author, and not patronize this publisher since they are not willing to make good on their promises.
CISA Prep Guide, not entirely useless.......2005-02-18
I purchased this guide, after 13 years of practical experience, mainly for the test materials. However, I did attempt to read the book, and must say that it is a chore. The author's style and usage leave much to be desired.
Most troublesome were the obvious inconsistencies within the test materials. The test results showed that answers correctly chosen were often scored as wrong, and some wrongly chosen were often scored as correct. It's as if they updated the software to "mix it up" between revisions, but failed to update the actual answers to correspond with the changes.
I did complain to the publisher and ask for an updated software version, but only received back that they would check with the author. I have since heard nothing. Of course, when you are preparing for a test, the main thing you are looking for in a review system is accuracy ... on this account the book and software fail.
I don't recommend this book if you are seriously considering taking the exam and want to review.
Fire the Editor!.......2004-06-09
I am an IS professional with 25 years of experience but it's been 6 years since I took a certification test. I needed the book to codify what I already knew from experience. I found the actual subject matter of the book to be adequate, but the author often took 500 words to say what could have been said in 50. And then he often said it wrong! And with bad grammer and incomplete sentences. I was as angry at the book editor as I was with the author. I kept thinking that English must not be the author's native language, but even so, the editor didn't do his job. That's probably why an updated version has not been issued. Get a new author! Get a new editor!
The software also was bad. I have used Boson software and tests before and found them very good. The test engine may work great, but if the data is wrong, it doesn't matter how great the engine is.
Bottom line - don't buy this book. Get the ISACA study materials. It'll cost three times a much, but it'll be worth it.
