Book Description

Leading scholars examine how the church, community organizations, and the government must work together to provide for America's poor in the aftermath of welfare reform. Not since the 1930s was the question posed by the 1996 welfare reform law so dramatically restated: Who in this new, post welfare-state era is responsible for social provision? This legislation up-ended our familiar notions of government and charity. Emerging from The Center for the Study of Values in Public Life at the Harvard Divinity School, the essays in Who Will Provide? address several important aspects of this challenging situation. They trace the long history of American social programs, voluntary associations, and religious organizations. They explore the need for a new kind of public religion that faces the plurality of America today. They focus on social action as a calling. They examine the Roman Catholic Church's involvement in welfare and look at the perils of the charitable choice provisions outlined in the welfare reform law. Working beyond the policy squabbles of the 1990s debate to the historical, moral, legal, and philosophical issues raised, these Harvard scholars argue that all of us, at some level, are called to step into the breach.

"Our nation finds itself in the midst of an unexpected vigorous public discussion about what happens to those in need now that 'welfare as we know it' is gone. Much of that discussion however is historically ill-informed and philosophically thin. [Who Will Provide?] supplies the necessary ingredients to enrich and deepen the debate, and to give it focus." -Harvey Cox, Harvard University

5 out of 5 stars great context.......2001-02-16

With the recent appointing of a faith-based alternatives advisor to the White House, Who Will Provide is essential reading for anyone who wants to have solid grounding on the important relevant issues. In this thoughtful, provocative book -- constructed after several years of discussion among some of the brightest people thinking on these issues -- the issue of how religion must take a more prominent role in American social welfare is tackled head on. The voices and stories of the contributors vary, but the underlying intent remains to find viable solutions in an environment that cries out more strongly for them than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Good Works.......2001-01-19

A useful range of perspectives on the current debate over faith based organizations and the provision of social services. Helpful in terms of framing the issues broadly, and thought-provoking from a moral standpoint.

          Book Description

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, German cultural attitudes of paternalism and partriarchy heavily influenced the entrance of women into the labor force. To make German working women visible in their nation's economic and social history, Franzoi examines the relationship between female labor and the production process. This book focuses on women at the intersection of work and family and discusses their work choices during a time of rapid economic development.

Why Don't Dogs Wear Shoes? is a series of humorous stories “inspired by my grandkids,” says the author, a grandfather of ten. Jerry Chiappetta takes an offbeat look at the Phases of Life — Youth, Middle Age and “You're lookin' good...” He tells a hilarious story about saving puppies from a marauding raccoon, and offers a touching account of a boy's first wilderness adventure. Learn about things grandpa knows for sure, such as how to kill time without grandma finding out...go on a flying adventure...view life from a dog's point of view, plus other warm and fuzzy stuff, including how to live every moment. These true stories are clear and simple pieces that can be read aloud to children or grandchildren. Knee-slapping fun with a message, but never preachy. “Children are important,” Jerry says. “After all, they're our replacements.”

            Book Description

Contrary to the standard joke about how to get to Carnegie Hall, "making it" in music is not simply about practice, practice, practice. Today, over 200,000 people in the United States work as musicians. With competition for traditional employment opportunities for musicians becoming ever more heated, today's musicians must know how the music industry works and how they can tailor their skills accordingly. How can musicians create their own professional paths? In Beyond Talent, veteran music career counselor Angela Myles Beeching offers up a comprehensive guide for musicians in search of work, demystifying the steps to success. Drawing on a wealth of real-life examples, the book untangles artist management and the recording industry and explains how to find and create performance opportunities. Guidance is also provided on grant writing and fundraising, day jobs, freelancing, and how to manage money, time, and stress. Straightforward and reader-friendly, Beyond Talent is filled with practical tips, examples, checklists, sample budgets, goal-setting exercises, and extensive resource listings. This essential handbook goes beyond the usual "how-to"; Beyond Talent helps musicians tackle the core questions about career goals, defining success, and imagining and then creating a meaningful life as a professional musician.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Talent : Creating a Successful Career in Music.......2006-03-19

A music business book for the classical musician? Is that some sort of oxymoron? Imagine my amazement upon finding this absolute gem while browsing in the BYU bookstore's small music section. I've never seen a book with this focus before, and had no reason to hope for one. This book descended on me out of the blue, almost like a revelation.

In the "prelude" Ms. Beeching gives her "confessions" as a career counselor. First she expounds on the "truth about career paths" : there really is no such thing as a laid out path for any musician (classical or pop) that will lead them to enduring success. She then offers "five trade secrets" of her profession:

Look for the light in the eyes (what make you light up when talking?)
People often create their own obstacles
The first steps are most important
            You already have the answers
People move ahead when they're good and ready, and not a moment sooner

This is essentially a book about being a self-starter and taking things into your own hands rather than waiting for "them" to discover you. The book gives numerous tools for doing so. It covers qualities you must develop to "make it" as a musician, networking skills, developing your image (letterhead, bios, photos, promo kits, etc.), expanding your impact with demos and CDs, using the internet to promote your career, booking performance like a pro, building your audience (the media, publicity and you), connecting with audiences through residencies and community programming, performing at your best, freelancing - managing yourself, raising money for music projects (yes, you too can fund-raise), and getting it all together.

I am currently re-reading the book as there is so much information it will take a while to digest it all and even more time to implement it. The good news is, there are things you can do to promote your classical career and be a success.

If there is one drawback to this book, it is that I wish it contained more specifics on one of my main specialities, composition. There is some info for composers and composers will find the book of immense value, but the book is definitely slanted toward performers. The thing that almost negates this drawback is that Ms. Beeching states several times the need for performers to work with composers, newer repertoire or find some other niche in order to distinguish themselves from the mass of people already performing the standard repertoire. Sound advice.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh look at the business.......2005-09-15

A little while ago I reviewed a strangely titled book called "Making Music in Looking Glass Land" by Ellen Highstein. A labour of love, this book became the seminal "text book" for the classical musician and, now it its fourth edition, is still the book I would recommend to any musician either starting out on their career or working actively in the industry. However, this year an equally good, authoritative and comprehensive book has been published that aims to equip the classical musician with the tools and techniques required to make a success in this career.

Angela Beeching, an author who has gained a tremendous amount of experience through her work as the director of career services at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston brings to this book real life problems and practical solutions that can help any and all musicians. Staring off by talking about the entrepreneurial musician, Beeching embeds in the mind of the reader the thought that success in this profession is up to you, the musician, and no one else. The characteristics a musician needs, Beeching writes, include "flexibility, resiliency and the ability to find opportunities in the midst of difficulties or challenges". It is from this position that she then moves the reader onto some of the key soft skills required to run your career such as the art of networking (or "Schmoozing for Success" as she puts it), time management, dealing with performance anxiety and the fundamental questions of what you, as a musician, actually do. However, it is the practical advice that really sets this book apart.

Each chapter deals with a different topic including information about creating promotional material (brochures, biographies, etc.), recording demo CDs, using the internet to promote and advance your career, securing performance opportunities, raising funds, tax (although this is geared towards the American market), writing letters and press releases, publicity photographs, contracts, setting up and running residency or community education projects and on and on. For a relatively short book, Beeching manages to cover a lot of ground without being too detailed nor too information light. Each section is liberally peppered with real-life examples, case studies, handy tips and checklists in order to provide a complete start-to-finish tutor covering all of these vital subjects.

All too often I have reviewed similar books in these pages with the recurring caveat that, while they are useful, they are very much aimed at the non-classical musician. Here, in Beeching's volume, we have a useful and informative book that is aimed solely and directly at the classical musician. Buy it now!

            5 out of 5 stars A no-nonsense guide to music career success.......2005-06-09

A few years back, Angela Beeching (my dear colleague at New England Conservatory down the road) wrote a "Career Guide for Musicians". I was very impressed at how resourceful the guide was. Well, she finally got the chance to flesh out that first guide and "Beyond Talent" is the result. While ably covering all the nut & bolts of music career success (networking, building your image, recording, performing and raising support), the chief value of the book lies in the wisdom Beeching brings to creative career development. She understands the psychological profile of the career musician and that understanding shines through every page of her book.

In addition, Beeching tackles lesser-explored subjects geared to her primary readership of classical and jazz musicians: residency programs, performance health, teaching and grant opportunities. Up to date and immensely practical, Beyond Talent should be on the bookshelf of all career musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Informative Guide!.......2005-02-21

Angela Beeching's "Beyond Talent" is a must-have book for musicians -- both young musicians who aspire to a career, and working musicians who wish to be more successful. Full of practical advice, "Beyond Talent" gives step-by-step strategies for important aspects of building a career in music, covering topics like networking, promotions, and building and connecting with audiences. "Beyond Talent" also includes samples of bios, press releases, and other documents that are vital to the working musician. Beeching knows her stuff and writes with depth, and at the same time, her writing is accessible and inspirational. This book is a terrific companion for young and established musicians alike!

You don't have to be or hope to be a Magician to enjoy this book.Dunninger explains these illusions in a clear and enjoyable language style.I don't particularly agree that learning how a trick was done ;ruins it any more than finding who done it in a mystery.I like to see how things work and really enjoyed the book. With magic shows one can still enjoy the performance without knowing the secret. It is not the same as reading a mystery and having the last few pages missing and the mystery not revealed.Whether you enjoy a simple little trick with a couple of matches or a complicated disappearing person production, this book is a fun read.

This book is a gem. There are magic tricks of every genre.
The presentation is perfect for application during frat parties,
public gatherings and a variety of other entertainment scenarios.
Some of these trick demonstrations come from every imaginable
circus routine. The beauty of the book is that each trick
is explained and drawn to scale for ease in replication.
For instance, the individual napkin folds are depicted in
connection with a series of napkin tricks. There is an extensive

section on how to make a puppet which includes the controller,
hand and arm control, body control, wrist, knee, head, neck
and torso threading. In addition, the back of the book contains
much detail about the personal history of the author. The work
                is highly recommended.

Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic is a must have for every magicians library. This book covers he early stage magic of vaudville days. It includes everything from very large techniques that require a lot of preperattion to simple techniques and tricks that can be made with ordinary household objects. Some of the best illusions of all time are explained in this book. Mr. Dunninger was one of the last performers of live vaudeville. He had over 50 years experience as a magician.

You know how it's said that sometimes you don't find greatness, it finds you? September 1980 was when it fell into my hands. I was in the sixth grade at the time, and hiding in one of the many u-shaped cases of books in my junior high school's library. In that month, Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic snared my eyes away from my usual reading of history volumes and comic book anthologies. It provided an escape for me, a literary astral projection back to a time where discovery, invention and intrigue were sacred values. This book is a staggering read, from the 30's Hollywood prose of the author to the turn-of-the-century illustrations explaining almost every magic trick performed; from coin tricks, fakirs, disappearing acts, sleight of hand, secrets of mediums to large stage magic, there's a new adventure with every page turned. 15 years after I left junior high, I thought I'd never see that book again. I am unbelievably lucky to have this book in my possession today. A small retailer in Cleveland found this for me after a six month search, so don't expect to get it right away. But when you do, you'll look forward to days, months, even years of enjoyment, whether you perform magic or not.

This book has got to be three inches thick full of
magic layed out in turn-of-the-century style. It
almost feels like your browsing through an old
                Sears & Roebuck catalog.

Several of the tricks require lots of preparation.
I enjoyed the ones with on hand items.

The emergence of XML is having an enormous impact on Web development, and scaling the learning curve of this new technology is a priority for many developers. The XML Bible offers a superb introduction to the subject and the groundwork to understand XML's future developments.

Author Elliotte Rusty Harold uses a patient, step-by-step discussion that clearly points out the potential of XML without boring his readership with tons of SGML spec-speak. Harold opens quickly with a "Hello World" example to get the reader coding early, and follows that with a simple but powerful example of XML's data management benefits--presenting baseball statistics. Once you've coded your first XML documents, you'll be hooked on the technology and motivated to learn about the more sophisticated topics.

Style sheet languages are covered comprehensively to illustrate the presentation possibilities and pitfalls. An unusually long list of real-life XML applications also shows how XML is already being used, and there is in-depth coverage of the Resource Description Framework, Channel Definition Format, and Vector Markup Language. The book wraps up with a section that helps you design your own XML application from scratch.

Titling a book a bible is a bold move, but this engaging and informative guide is entitled to make this claim. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: XML background, example XML applications, type definitions (DTDs), style languages, Xlinks, Xpointers, Namespaces, application planning, and XML 1.0 specification.

I bought Harold's book to help me move from XHTML to XML and to handle data with PHP which does not fit well in a relational database / SQL. This book bogs down quickly in very long explanations & examples which could have been a fraction of the size. I think it has good coverage, but Harold uses too many words every time he approaches a subject. To paraphrase someone else, Harold could write 10,000 words on the color red.

The problem with Wiley's Bible series (I have several of them) is that the goal seems to be to make them as big and heavy as a boat anchor. This results in verbose books, which may be ok for use as a reference but way to hard to read cover to cover for initial learning. The time needed to read these books cover to cover exceeds the value of the book itself. If you buy books by the pound (or kilo), this is a good buy. But if you value your time more than you value impressive size, there are better alternatives.

On a positive note: I have not found a bunch of typo or editing errors and Harold seems to know the subject. I'm just frustrated by the slow pace, although I will continue trying to read it at least a little longer.

Warning: [Some opinions given here appear to be by paid reviewers. ie: Feb 3, 2005, and others. How many others are also raw attempts to sell books without honor? Can you trust anyone who writes hundreds or thousands of 5 star opinions?? Heck no! Hint: Check out the person writing the review before actually reading it. Look for how many opinions he/she writes and how many stars. Distrust all high opinions in the first few months after publication, all high opinions by people who have only written a couple of opinions, and all high opinions from people who only write high opinions. Thanks for the lack of honesty Elliotte &/or Wiley &/or big A. (my opinion, 2 cma).]

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't cover DOM and SAX.......2006-02-07

I haven' read the book, only browsed its TOC. It doesn't cover the Document Object Model (DOM) and the Simple API for XML (SAX). It also discusses CSS in too much detail. These days, web development professionals will probably have a knowledge of both HTML and CSS before starting with XML.

Consider "Beginning XML" or "Professional XML" instead, both published by Wrow.

                            1 out of 5 stars Pulp paper.......2005-10-10

I have purchased many books from Amazon, but this one is printed on the lowest-quality paper I've ever experienced. Though it's relatively new, the yellowed pages look like a 1960's pulp novel. There is literally a 2mm yellow border surrounding each page. Come on "Hungry Minds" publishers, you can do better than this.

Review for XML 1.1 Bible (3rd Edition):

Elliotte Rusty Harold is that rare technical author who can write about anything and make it interesting. In this case, he has written 1,000 pages on XML providing us with an excellent guide book to this technology. Whether you are a beginner or advanced user of XML, there will be something in this book for you.

The book is divided into five parts. The first part discusses the basics of XML giving us an introduction to what XML is, what it is used for, and explaining the basics of creating a well-formed XML document. Part two discusses DTDs and explains how namespaces are used. Part three looks at various style languages including CSS and XSL. The section on CSS will be useful to anyone wishing to use CSS to format their HTML documents. Part four gives us a tour of some supplemental XML technologies including XLinks, XPointers, XInclude, and Schemas. The chapter that most interested me was on Schemas and the explanations were clear and complete, leaving no mystery about how to use this technology. The final part looks at a few XML applications including XHTML, RDDL, and SVG. The book does not cover writing programs to process XML documents using SAX or DOM, for example. The author has another book on that topic if that is of interest to you.

Each part of the book does an exceptional job of explaining the topic. The author gives us plenty of examples to make the text crystal clear. The author writes as a colleague helping out fellow programmers and not as an instructor droning away at a blackboard. You really get the idea that the author enjoys XML and enjoys explaining it. If you are interested in working with XML this book is truly an indispensable guide.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, Surprisingly Useful.......2005-02-04

When I first saw this book I thought that someone must be kidding. There's no question that XML is clearly the language to use when you want to transfer data using the standard web communications protocols. But a book that's more than a thousand pages, get serious.

They I opened it, low and behold, links, style sheets, specialized forms of XML for specialized purposes that have been agreed upon by multiple competing companies. It turns out that there's a lot more to XML than I thought.

Then in conjunction with XML other languages have been developed, some have proved not so useful and have faded away, others have evolved and changed to be more useful.

All in all, this is a very useful book, well written and has given me some ideas about how to solve some problems. That's all you can ask out of a book.
