Not for beginners.......2007-07-31
The book is exactly what it says in the preface: "(This) book presents a system-engineering methodology for the design, construction, and testing of robotic hardware, software, and mechanical interfacing".
The book is not for LEGO beginners but for advanced (electronics) users. There are some LEGO robot tips as well, and once you get used to engineering language (POC - proof of concept, BOM - Bill of Materials etc.) it is a nice book.
The book is more about circuit interfaces and related techniques so the experimentalist (you) needs much more than one LEGO set: for example "one salvaged RC transmitter-receiver pair" and scout, LEGO speed computer, Radio Shack Electronics Learning Lab etc.
I really didn't like the cartoon type drawings of RCX brick, sensors and ... electrons.
not worth the money -- beware.......2004-07-14
As an experienced circuit designer and a lego mindstorms enthusiast, I found this book very disappointing. I had suspicions about why many copies of it were being auctioned on ebay for $2 each. Now I know why. Right from the first chapter on, I am puzzled about what the hell the author is attempting to communicate. I fail to understand why he uses an obsolete Scout programmable brick (from the Robotics Discovery Kit), or for that matter, why he even interfaces a gutted RC transceiver to it. He doesn't even use it to remotely control the robot. No, he uses the Scout interfaced with a relay driver circuit to turn a wireless receiver on and off remotely as a lame example of wireless control. This is an example of wireless control? Yeah, a bad one if anything.
I'm also not sure of the audience he intends this book for. He put lots of circuit schematics and descriptions in it, but assumes the reader has basic elctronics knowledge, such as diode and transistor theory, as well as circuit analysis skills. If this book was intended for high-school age readers, they better be taking electronics or have had courses in it, or he will lose them with this content. My personal opinion is that this text has some potential as a reference in the 2nd year of a community college electronics program, but no serious circuit designer, programmer, or even hobbyist is gonna get anything new from this. Better info about sensor development and other programming languages is easily found on other lego mindstorms websites.
Another annoying aspect is the author's liberal use of acronyms for just about any set of words he deems necessary, whether it fits or not. There are more TLAs throughout this text than any military field manual ever contained. I don't need him to condense something so useless as 'stand-alone code' to SAC for future use.
The author does include a new and interesting method of object-oriented RCX prgramming with Python and VBA language using Excel. This is probably about the only redeeming aspect of this text for savy programmers, but it too is more of a 'type this' and 'run this' treatment that omits any useful explaination of the code and how it works. I believe the intended audience for this book may just find this way over their head if they are only capable of programming the RCX using RCX code, instead of using other more flexible and challenging languages such as NQC and Java.
Bottom line: if you are even mildly curious about this book, get it at an auction or buy it used thru Amazon (as I did--I only paid $2.50 + $3.50 s/h). Don't even think about paying full retail price for this text; it isn't worth it, and you'll be disgusted that you wasted your money on it. Better and more information on RCX interfacing can be found on the web at other lego mindstorm sites such as http://www.plazaearth.com/usr/gasperi/lego.htm
Great book from a different approach.......2002-10-23
I have in my collection all of the books published on Lego Mindstorms. While everyone else focus on construction of a Lego model with an accompanying program to add functionality to the model, Wilcher takes a different approach.
This book is not for the absolute beginners. You do need to have some prerequisites in electronics and programming. The book only shows you how to carry out the interfacing between the RCX and the outside world (using eg. RC transmitter/receivers, Basic Stamp) but assume you know about potentiometers, resistors etc and also know how to use multimeters. This book is more for the electronically adept users who wishes to use RCX as part of his tools.
Overall, this is book that I would highly recommend to all who wish to use the RCX other than what all the books have on about. I gave it 4 stars (actually I would have preferred 4.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't have that!) as I would really would see Wilcher going in-depth for some of the projects.
Wonderful motivator for Mechatronics.......2002-10-12
This book is great because it gives step-by-step
explanations on various ways in programming RCX brain
and how to interface with various sensors.
A wonderful motivator for Mechatronics.
Dr. Chung, Lawrence Tech University
Helpful and informative.......2002-10-11
I found the book easy for me to understand. Although I am relatively new to Mindstorms, I needed to be able to move beyond the basics. The programs provided on the cd gave me some more ideas of where I can go as I develop myself. It's light-hearted and full of illustrations that gave me a thorough understanding of the concepts that he discussed. This book is an asset to any collection.

Book Description
Spanning two centuries, reaching virtually every corner of the globe, the epic story of the Hadassah organization is the inspiring and fascinating history of generations of determined women who worked to heal, enlighten, educate and save lives. It Takes a Dream
The Story of Hadassah, by Marlin Levin, is an abridged version of the massive updated history of Hadassah, which first made an appearance at the 1997 Hadassah convention in Chicago.
Including a foreword by Elie Wiesel and a preface by former Israeli Prime Minister, the late Golda Meir, It Takes a Dream begins in the early days of the twentieth century, when the Jewish population of Jerusalem was enduring very difficult living conditions, and suffering disease and hardship. It was in this setting that the renowned and beloved founder of Hadassah, Henrietta Szold, became inspired to help improve the lives and health of Jerusalem's Jews. Henrietta Szold was to become one of the most dedicated, inspirational and well-known Jewish women of the twentieth century, spawning the Hadassah organization, and creating a strong, unified body of women throughout the United States, and later, the world, committed to Zionism, Jewry and of course, Jerusalem.
Author Marlin Levin tells the story of Hadassah in intricate detail, highlighting the ways in which the history of Hadassah is entwined in the history of Jerusalem. Through war, triumph, building and rebuilding, from Hadassah Hospital at Mount Scopus, to Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem, from the early pioneering days of the State of Israel, to the 1990s, and a more global focus, the story of Hadassah is, too, the story of world Jewry, of Zionism, of Israel and of Jerusalem.

THE JUNKYARD DOG.......2006-10-25
by: ERIKA TAMAR
This is an adventure book. This book takes places in many places like the junkyard, school, and the aparment. There is a junkyard dog starving to death and treated badly. katie is going to save it's life by feeding it and sheltering it,but she has to ask the man how owns the dog if she can feed him. The main characters are Katie , Lucky, the junkyard dog, Jim, the father. Katie does nut like him because he is to strict to her and her mother. Mary Ann is Katie's mom. Jim works two jods one as a carpenter and the other is the watch man he watches at night. Mary Ann (Katie's mom) is always thinking about Katie getting hurt or somthing. Katie is a girl that is not afraid to speak up, at least sometimes. Lucky is very thankfulto have Katie to take care of him.
I think this book teaches you some lessons about taking care of yourself. Jim is strict about things like buying food for the dog, your own money, and other things. It teaches you some lessons about taking care of your dogs. Heres one: Jim was checking Lucky to see if he was ok after he was done. Katie fed lucky some food and then Katie says she can ask if her mom can buy dog food but jim says she needs to buy her own dog food from her own money. It's not her mother's problem. it's katie's
I like this book because it is about a dog that is not healthy and when Katie comes along and feeds him he gets bettter and better.
The Book That all Dog Lovers Will Love!!!!!

If you're into the whole mans beat friend, or cute lovable dogs this is the best for you! Plus I think this shows the fabulous bond between human and pet. Kids my age I think would love this book because of the relationship between the dog and the girl because it's just so sweet! This girl Katie is also going through a lot with her mom marrying a different man than her real father but in the end it turns out fine! This book is for children around my age in middle school but they have kids beating up the dog when he's helpless and lonely, and she ends up giving him a nice little doghouse with the name of Lucky. So if you like a book with happy endings you will defiantly get one.
the junkyard dog.......2006-04-04
I pick this book as my favorite reading counts book is because I love to read about animals. The junkyard dog is about a eleven year old girl named Katie. Katie was walking home from school when she saw the poor little dog tied up to a rope in the junkyard station. She called the dog lucky, and had to ask the owner of lucky if she could pay for is food and water, and it was very hard to talk to a man that is so mean and has a very mean face.and Katie is a really shy girl to even talk to her freind. The owner only wanted lucky to be his gaurd dog. He never gave lucky food and water and lucky was so thin when the junkyard man took care of him. Now Katie has to buy food for lucky with her own money. And she has a new dad that she hates to be with but soon gets to know that he wasn't all that bad. Katie also gets help from a friend, that she also throught that he was a mean little boy, but he helps Katie with things she coudn't. I would recommend this book to all ages because of it's thoughtfulness, and could teach people to not judge a book by it's cover.
Family, friendship and a junkyard dog.......2006-03-07
This story, told in a simple writing style, is packed with problems any new teenager faces. There are friendship problems and boy problems. Beauty issues and family dilemmas. But more importantly, this story addresses a very big issue for young girls--self esteem.
The relationship between the junkyard dog and Katie begins immediately, and is the catalysis for her transformation. Her commitment to taking care of this dog, even though it isn't hers, begins the wheels of change. Her mother, always protective, is against her even going near the dog. But the dog is the perfect opportunity for her new stepfather to begin to play a role in Katie's life. With his help and encouragement Katie begins to stand up for what she wants and follows through on her commitments. And along the way she makes a few new and surprising friendships.
This is a young readers story. An important read.
WARNING!!! DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-23
I think that this can easily qualify for one of the worst books that I have ever read. I had to read an animal book for my school so I picked this one thinking that the summery on the back looked interesting enough, but after I had read about one chapter I realized that I was reading the very fruits of boredom. The plot is way tooo predictable the main character is really boring and Lucky does not seem to have any personality whatsoever. Normally I really like animal books but this one was so bad that I wish I had never read it. If you want to read an animal book I hope you have the common sense not to read this one.

The Junkyard Dog.......2006-11-10
If you like Damon Runyon, you'll love Robert Campbell's Jimmy Flannery series, the first of which is The Junkyard Dog. Set in present-day Chicago, Jimmy's day job is sewer inspector, but he's also a precinct captain for the Democratic party, which isn't quite the bagman job it seems at first glance. No, Jimmy says, what he does "is provide services and favors for my people, which is like my family. I admit that I keep the idea in mind that they'll do me favor for favor when election time comes around."
Favors Jimmy Flannery does for his people include finding out who bombed an abortion clinic and killed his neighbor Mrs. Klutzman, who was volunteering at the clinic at the time. A truly original voice, wonderful secondary characters (like Jimmy's father Mike, who is Everyfather, squared), and the present-day Chicago setting makes you feel like you've just stepped off the plane.
The Start Of Something Wonderful!.......1997-03-17
This was the second book of R.C. that I read. I first read The Cats Meow. I loved it so much that I found The Junkyard Dog...being it was the first of the Flannery mysteries. After I saw the titles of his books, I had to read each and every one. I wish R.C. would continue with the Flannery mysteries, I really enjoy them, even a second time. The other mysteries he writes are good also, but I am hooked on the Flannerys

TOTALLY AWSOME, YO!.......2007-05-29
This book was awsome. I felt sad, though, when Mr. Farrow was abusing the dog Lucky. But I felt good that the girl built that dog house and stood up to Mr. Farrows. I also liked her step-father. Though he was mean at times, and swore 2-3-4 times in the book, I still liked it. It was good from the very beginning. They should make a 2nd book out of it. Katie loved dogs, and I am glad that she helped him out.

Rubinstein is considered Liszt's only possible rival on the concert stage while Carreño is the foremost woman pianist of the late 19th century. Together, they discuss "the soul of the piano": the art of piano pedaling. Rubinstein's technique is explored through works he performed in 1885-6. Carreño's observations explore her sensitivity made possible through combinations of touch and pedal.

Like talking with a friend.......2007-05-16
Harlan Hogan provides a lot of explanation of how things work in the VO world (or at least as they did in 2002, when this book was written). He gives great advice while lightly touching on subjects like running your business, jargon, union vs. "pre-union", etc. However, he also offers some insight that beginning voice actors aren't likely to find in a lot of other books. Harlan does this by recounting stories from his own experience that not only entertain, but relate to the major points of each section. He also lets the reader in on inside jokes of the trade like "Blooper's Soap" and the infamous Findus Foods session with Orson Welles. Sure, they're easily Google-able, but how are they woven into the fabric of the industry?
I've done radio for a dozen years, switched to the computer tech side
for another half-dozen and now I'm studying and working on figuring out
where I will best fit into the VO market. This book not only confirmed
a lot of things I felt instinctively, but it also helped me to not
listen so much to the "what if" voice that we all carry with us.
Extremely entertaining and informative.......2006-09-01
I really enjoyed this book, it is really informative, entertaining and gives and inside look at voice over acting. This is one of the few books that I will re-read becouse of all the usefull information, a must read for anyone starting out or considering a career as a voice actor.
Can I give it 100 stars instead of 5?.......2006-07-21
This book is excellent. It's packed with information about what one should expect if he/she wants to work in the Voice Acting industry, and it also includes many tips & tricks that voice actors could follow in order to advance in their careers.
It's hilariously entertaining yet down-to-earth informative - a rare combination achievable in books.
On top of that, it's easy to read, so you don't see much of those long-worded-jargons-which-you-will-find-in-technical-books for instance. Instead, you get cute cartoons replacing the too-much-information type of thing.
As I've mentioned in the title, I'd give this book 100 stars if I could.
This book truly is one of the BEST purchases I've EVER made.

Simply excellent.......2006-06-19
If you're someone who's always felt they had the talent to do voiceover work, and had no idea where to start, you simply can't go wrong with Harlan Hogan's excellent book. Mr. Hogan's writing style is light and humorous, which makes the book a very unintimidating way to get acquainted with the world of voice acting.
Mr. Hogan relates his path to a VO career with memoirs and humorous anecdotes (you can tell he really enjoys his work!), while providing separate "techniques" sections throughout, covering all the aspects of the voiceover profession from getting the work to doing the work to accounting for the work. Yes, even the section on bookkeeping and the IRS is fun to read, while providing critical information to prevent common mistakes.
As an added bonus, you also get clued in to the VO profession's shorthand and lore. Do you know what "wild on the last line" means? Have you ever heard of Blooper's Soap, or know why you can crack up just about any professional VO simply by saying "IN July"? You will after reading Mr. Hogan's book!
Whether you're a clueless wanna-be (like me, at this point), a newcomer or an established professional, Mr. Hogan's _VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor_ is a must-read!

The VO "Missing Manual".......2006-06-15
Skilfully written as a concise and no-holds-barred discussion about Voice Over acting, the author draws on years of personal experience as a fledgling radio broadcaster/stage actor; becoming the acclaimed Voice Over veteran who continues to enjoy an amazing and prolific Voice Over acting career: a Master of the Game.
Generously offering useful advise on how to get started as a Voice Over actor (by finding the best workshop, voice coach, agent, union), showing how internet technology in particular ISDN/DSL patches can help leverage one's career in the Voice Over field, and breaking into personal anecdotes that inform as well as entertain readers... Harlan Hogan has covered it all in a witty narrative that is really the "missing manual" for the Voice Over professional and newcomer.

Great reference.......2007-09-05
I've never found these type of books all that useful (certainly not something you read cover to cover), but this one does have great organization and an emphasis on the project management aspect (not just some techie jibber jabber which is out of date in a year).
I use it mostly to help me clarify with sr. management why our BI department is doing what it's doing, expected benefits and risks. It helps explain why it is important to do all the ground work. Even if we aren't given time and resources to do it, it helps me keep my eye on the ball, not lose sight of objectives, and work in good best practices whenever possible.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is entrenched in BI projects on a regular basis.
Excellent book - for beginners..........2007-07-18
The author has well organized the contents, and provided a clear explanation of each of the topics (each topic is a step/phase in the overall BI implementation methodology).... Has a project plan template also...
Good book for beginners in Data warehousing / BI.
Great for a PM.......2007-05-11
Am currently in the process of executing a DW/BI project, my background is JAVA application Project management. This book has been great in getting me upto speed on the basic architecture and lingo of BI/DW.
Book lays out step by step the different parts to a DW. The front office, the back office, meta data repository. Highlights how DW/BI phases are different from other application dev phases. It doesn't go into how to do data modelling - for this get the lifecycle toolkit. But it gives a great overview of planning a BI/DW initiative. Much better than the pure Project Management books.
To get a complete picture I'd use this book along with the Toolkit book.
Good organized document.......2007-01-11
I like this book, its easy to read it...
Good document
Good Practical advice.......2007-01-09
The book offers good practical advice that can be used in the development of a Business Intelligence (BI) project / initiative. The over all road map provides a check list of issues to consider and offers a place to start in planning your own initiative. It is a good reference for individuals starting a BI project for the first time.

Book Description
"Anyone who finds Data Warehouse Project Management has found for themselves a veritable gold mine, a wealth of wisdom and experience from some real pros . . . it is the most thorough and thoughtful work on data warehouse projects I have ever read." --From the Foreword by John A. Zachman
Data warehouse development projects present a unique set of management challenges that can confound even the most experienced project manager. Data Warehouse Project Management addresses these challenges and provides a comprehensive roadmap to managing every aspect of data warehouse design, development, and implementation. Drawing on their extensive experience in the field, Sid Adelman and Larissa Moss point to critical success factors, reveal the many pitfalls to watch out for, and offer proven solutions that will enable you to put a successful data warehouse project into place.
You will find in-depth coverage of such topics as:
Critical success factors and reasons for failures
Measuring results
Cost-benefit analysis
Selecting the right software and vendors
Roles and responsibilities of team members
Methodology, including rapid application development and parallel development tracks
Developing a logical and physical data model for smooth data integration
The important issue of data quality and how to cleanse dirty data from source files
At the end of each chapter, "A Cautionary Tale" warns you of potential problems, and a workshop enables you to practice what you've just learned. The book concludes with a comprehensive example that illustrates project planning and management in action, from determining milestones, schedules, and tasks to maintaining control when the project goes off course. An accompanying CD-ROM contains the workshops in electronic format as well as helpful templates and additional reading material.
Customer Reviews:
Superficial, hardly any practical value.......2007-10-03
The book spends too much time on general project management topics and contains virtually nothing that can be practically applied to a data warehouse project. Too superficial.
Decent but there's better out there........2007-05-11
If you wanted to get two three books I wouldn't get this one. The same author wrote "Business Intelligence Roadmap" which I find to be a much more comprehensive book. Coming from a Java App implementation background I found this book lacking in depth, and much of the material was much better explained in the BI Roadmap and the Lifecycle toolkit book - making this book a bit redundant.
Lack any depth on how really set up a Data Warehouse.......2003-12-17
I am just starting a large scale Data Warehouse project. I hoped this book would give real insight to architect the solution - but I found the book weak and superficial - too much focused on the "usual" project team fluff
Great book !!!.......2001-11-10
This is a really valuable book. The pages contain a lot of useful tips and advices. The authors reaaly know about implementing DW.
Great book for anyone involved in managing and implementing DWs!
An excellent guide to DW project management.......2001-03-25
When I bought this book, I really had no high expectations : I did many DW project and knew project management methods.
This book provides the first complete coverage of (almost) any possible issues, risk and problem arising in a DW project. It also, provides some guideline about how to manage them.
The book goes well beyond Kimball (in the project management area) and provides many useful tools in the CD-rom
A really good investment if you consider it will directly affect your DW project cost !
