Book Description

When published thirteen years ago, The  Perfect Resume was the best resume book  on the market. It transformed the old resume  "list of facts" into a new model, an  opportunity for self-expression and self-promotion. But  today's perfect resume is not the same perfect resume  of ten--or even five years ago. The New  Perfect Resume provides the most  effective strategies for dealing with the current shift  away from 'good steady jobs' to an era of temporary,  freelance, and consulting  positions.

In order to compete in today's business world,  where employers are more interested in a candidate's  skills rather than experience, and where no  employment is guaranteed for life, resumes must be  highly customized and targeted to an employer with  current or short-term needs. The New  Perfect Resume shows readers how  to:

* Prepare a capabilities portfolio, which  focuses on a candidate's talents rather than the  number of jobs they've held

* Write  an "internal resume" that defines job  responsibilities for those already with a  job

* Use E-Mail, the talent banks of the  Internet, and electronic job  searches

Along with all these strategies, The New  Perfect Resume includes all the  hallmarks of a great resume book, including 50 samples of  winning resumes, easy-to-use drafting forms,  special resumes for recent graduates, salary  negotiation strategies, and suggestions on how to write a  perfect cover letter.

A classic in  the field of career development, The  New Perfect Resume is sure to become the  new standard upon which all other resume books are  compared.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Major Contribution to the Field!.......2003-03-17

Tom and Ellen Jackson, two of the most experienced and effective career counselors working in America today, have brought what has always been the best of all the resume books to a new level of excellence. The advice, the exercises, the forms, and the more than 100 sample resumes make this the one resume book to have in your library and to use as the foundation of a really powerful job search or career development process. There's nothing out there that comes close! I can only applaud the continuing and outstanding contribution to the field that has always been the hallmark of the work of the Jacksons.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to resume power.......2002-07-28

Organized, powerful and easy to use

5 out of 5 stars very user friendly and comprehensive book.......2001-09-20

This book is a great tool kit for writing your own resume. Checklists and sample paragraphs for many industries help you identify your strengths, weaknesses and capabilities. The authors strike a good balance between sharing their advice and delivering lots of information and samples.

1 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch.......2001-04-17

I read the first edition many years ago.

If you want to spend time reading how to "focus" "reimage" and fantasize upward and downward about your innermost self, this is the book for you. If you're seriously interested in finding a job which suits you, take a Myers-Briggs personality test and sit down with a career consultant. Something that these authors are NOT.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for putting together a good resume.......2000-08-02

This is an excellent book. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

            Book Description

In the United States, philanthropic activity often enabled women to create parallel power structures that resembled, but rarely replicated, the commercial and political arenas of men. From nuns who managed charitable and educational institutions to political activists demanding an end to discriminatory practices against women and children, many of the women whose lives are documented in these pages claimed distinctive public roles through the nonprofit sphere.

              Book Description

The seldom-heard "voice" of women's philanthropy speaks in this highly readable and richly contextualized collection of new writings. Elayne Clift, in her quest to demystify and honor women's philanthropy, turns to an impressive array of the movement's current leaders. As these remarkable women share their reflections and knowledge on the women's funding movement, it becomes clear that "women and philanthropy"--not so long ago a seeming oxymoron--harbors the marvelous potential for global social change across gender, race, and age barriers.

Following Sunny Fischer's introduction on the power of women's giving, the chapters in the first of two sections address the history of the women's funding movement (Carol Mollner and Marie C. Wilson), focusing on key topics, including the difficult task of documenting women's contributions (Mary Ellen Capek), women as donors (Jo Moore and Marianne Philbin), volunteerism (Katherine Acey), partnering and stewardship (Kimberly Otis and Anne B. Mosle), the role of girls and young women (Stephanie Yang), educational and endowment strategies (Tracy Gary), and an insider's critical look at the state of the movement (Marsha S. Rose).

Part 2 takes an intimate look at women and social change: achievements, challenges, and future directions. An overview (Chris Grumm and Emily Katz Kishawi) sets the stage for chapters on the model of the Ford Foundation (Barbara Y. Phillips), international giving (Patty Chang and Kavita Ramdas), inherited wealth (Cynthia Ryan), sharing earned income (Peg Talburtt, Judy Bloom, and Diane Horey), small-scale woman-to-woman support (Zainab Salbi), role models and inspiration (Helen Hunt and Kanyere Eaton), the future of funding (Christine Kwak, Gail McClure, and Anne C. Petersen), and "the next wave" (Kalpana Krishnamurthy). Jing Lyman sums up in a thoughtful afterword.

In this insightful collection, Clift and the contributors make the case for the passion and potential of women's giving. Women, Philanthropy, and Social Change celebrates women's power to influence social constructs and political policies--ultimately changing the very foundations of society.

                Book Description

The United States is becoming an information-based, service economy with fewer middle-income jobs than in an industrial economy. How does increasing service sector employment affect community income and thus social well-being? This well-documented study assesses the impact of changing levels of employment in the service and manufacturing sectors on the level and distribution of community income. The study includes both analyses of low-wage and high-wage service and manufacturing sectors and analyses of major segments of the service sector, including business services and retail trade. Measures of social well-being include changes in community aggregate income, aggregate wages and salaries, distribution of income within the community, and the community's position in the regional hierarchy. Particular attention is given to differences in impact on rural and urban communities. The book will be of interest to those concerned with rural economic development and issues related to inequality and economic and industrial change.

                              Book Description

The last decade has witnessed the phenomenal growth of the men's magazine market, raising important questions of a more general kind. What is the significance of the rise of men's lifestyle magazines for gender politics? Are we witnessing a backlash against feminism or are they merely harmless fun? Why did lsquo;new man' give way to the lsquo;new lad'? What political issues do these questions raise within the context of the information society? Making Sense of Men's Magazines is an original study which enables us to understand the appeal of men's magazines, the ways in which they are constructed and understood, and many of the complex questions they raise for both men and women. Through interviews with editors and key production staff, an analysis of the content of men's magazines and focus group interviews, this work seeks to lsquo;make sense' of this cultural phenomenon. The authors give particular attention to the gendered and commercial character of men's magazines, and the implications they have for the way we understand capitalism, masculinity and consumption in the modern world. This book makes a major contribution to understanding the role of magazines in contemporary culture and will be essential reading for students of sociology, media and cultural studies and gender studies.

This book is simply packed from end to end with chess lore, wisdom and - true to its title - art. Many of the combinations simply take your breath away, while others elicit a nod of satisfaction. What's more, players of virtually any strength can learn a huge amount by studying the analysis and extensive variations. After all, chess is at least three-quarters tactics! (You can be a grandmaster of strategy, but you will flounder even at club level if you are prone to miss combinations).

A few decades have passed since the book was writen, but don't let that discourage you - chess truths are immutable, and there is nothing in here that is less valid in 2005 than in 1951. The writers indulge in a chatty style, witty in a learned sort of way, but refreshing compared to the half-baked quality of too many chess books. To be fair, I suspect that grandmaster Keres' contribution was much less than master Golz's (the Russian spelling of German "Holtz"?), but it doesn't really make any difference. The value of this book lies in the hundreds of combinations, sacrifices and tricks, and it will reward many subsequent re-readings. One of my perpetual favourites.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Bible!!.......2006-02-10

The book claims to be the Bible, which to me means that it is the authority on the subject...it isnt! To its credit, the book does cover a lot of material and gives you a basic understanding of the components of Access. However the major problem is that the book offers very few examples. There is a CD that comes with the book, but why do I need to reference a CD for every detai?! In fact the CD isn't referenced much in the book at all.

This book would be a thousand times better if the author, instead of making the book like 1300 pgs long would get to the point and give clear examples. I found myself understanding terms and definitions but when I tried to apply them to building a database I had no real applied foundation. I am therefore looking to other books to supply what this doesn't.

3 out of 5 stars Not solution oriented enough.......2004-07-20

I've been using this for a few weeks and like the accompanying CD which allows you to search the entire book easily. What I don't like is that too often I found myself struggling to find solutions that existed but were not documented. Like what do you do when you've set up a report and want to add a field that's not on the Field List. The trick is to go back and expand the query the report is based on to include that field but you won't find that in here. Instead you might (as I did) struggle with Text Boxes that allow you to build expressions based on the field you want, but you come up with an error message. Also they are so proud of their sample database that you find yourself having to go into it all the time to understand their explanations. I find myself, instead, turning to Access's online help for much of what I should find more nicely explained in this book, both with and without the examples.

                              1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2004-05-24

This book is so riddled with errors, I can't believe it was published. Bad grammar, mislabled pictures, erroneous statements -- you name it. Wiley should be embarrassed to have put out a book this shabby.

2 out of 5 stars No structure at all.......2003-09-03

There's something strange about this Bible series. I already bought quite a few books of this series. They are very attractive by their looks, usually very thick and most of the time a bit disappointing. This one really is. I have rarely seen a computer book that is so badly structured as this one, I really do not find my way in it. Not the book to choose if you want to learn access, not even good as a reference book, no structure, no depth. I really wonder why it is so successful...

                              2 out of 5 stars Uninspired.......2003-08-04

I'm not very impressed with this book. This was my first Access book and it seemed like a good book at the time. When I started using this in conjunction with my own database development, I found it lacking.

It comes with a pet shop database and all of the examples and discussion center around that. Which I suppose seems to make sense. However, that construct is easy for the authors to create, yet gives us readers an extra "layer" to unravel before we can adapt a concept to our own work.

Time and time again I have reached a point in my database development where I needed to figure out how to do something. For example, right now I want to read up on splitting a database. So I flipped to that section, however there is NOTHING in the section that I can find useful.

In particular, I want to know how to manage linked tables. So let's say I split a database, and put a database into production for a client. Further let's say that I add a form or report to the front end later and email the changed front end to the client. How do I handle that scenario?

This book convers no such "real-world" actions, which is one reason why this book lacks, in my opinion.

In addition, the forms and reports that exist in the database are incredibly uninspired and simplistic. For example, check out Figure 19-7 (Chapter 19). It looks like something a child would put together. Or take a look at Figure 16-16, which is a terrible GUI.

While reading though this, I felt uninspired. This book verbosely describes concepts that are better explained with real-life examples. It seems more focused on a "widget" rather than something I can relate to. The database looks "cartooney" and unbelievable, constantly requiring me to translate the juvenile examples to something meaningful.

The list goes on and on.

As an alternative, I would consider Access 2000 - The Complete Reference by Osborne Press (Author: Virginia Anderson). It is a much better reference (I need an answer quick), as well as a "reader" (Read the chapter on using Forms and pleasantly stumble across the sequence of Form_Events that Access exposes).

Welcome to the office of the future! Microsoft Office 2000 has many new features, and sorting them out can be a challenge without a guidebook. Pick up the Microsoft Office 2000 Bible and get the word on Word, access to Access, and lots more. It's a comprehensive tome aimed at beginners and intermediate users, as well as more advanced folks who just want the dirt on the new stuff and plan to study in depth later.

From its pull-out "Quick Start" booklet through its advanced chapters on macros, collaboration, and document integration, you'll find plenty of information on how to make this application suite meet all of your needs. Lengthy sections on Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook are complemented by easy organization, clear writing, good illustrations, and strong cohesion to form a good working reference.

Publisher and FrontPage, as well as advanced material like Visual Basic for Applications, don't get as much space, so if you're destined for Web work or programming, you might want to consider another general title, or at least one specific to the application you'll be using. But if you want a good introduction to the most used parts of Office 2000, this book and CD-ROM (containing templates, documents, searchable text, and utilities galore) will serve you well. --Rob Lightner

I have always found the "Bible" books to give you a bit more insight into the subject matter.

I got this mainly for the information about Outlook and while the book is by no means useless, it is also disappointing. It's not consistent with Outlook 2000 Corporate or Workgroup (it can still help but the examples and screenshots are not entirely appropriate) and there are errors in the book, as well as downright bad English. Still, if you can get it cheap or for free, it might be worth something.
