A Good Resource for the Toolbox.......2004-03-27
An up-to-date NEC book is essential if you don't have everything from the code memorized. This handy book covers all of the basics for residential wiring. Even if you have some general guides on wiring (and there are some good ones out there), and you are a weekend warrior, you really must have the code handy. (A hint...read it BEFORE you start the job! I've ripped out a few jobs after discovering my work didn't pass code.)
This book is also helpful when the inspector drops by for a friendly visit. Point out in the book what you understood from the code. You'll have something more than your gut instinct to back you up on your job.
My only quibble is the book only hits 90% of the code. There are some important details you're going to have to consult the big code book on every once in a while. Otherwise, an excellent tool to go along with the voltage tester.
Highly Recommended.

It is Easy!.......2004-02-09
This book is a great follow up for your New Years Resolutions. Jahner-Byrne outlines in a simplistic and engaging manner the "how to's" of volunteering and getting involved in LIFE! She redefines failure as success turned inside out.
In the volunteer victories section I was interested in her choices of story lines. The three individuals profiled come from different walks of life and offer a different reason for becoming involved in their communities. It is a gentle reminder to get involved in our own community and become richer for it.
This is an easy read. It's so very nice to read an inspiration book that helps us in our civic and professional lives. Get a head in your business, personal life, professional and volunteer work. If you need resources the write offers many in the last section along with websites. I thought this was a terrific read.
New Year's Resolution.......2003-01-01
This was a Christmas present that will be used today and in 2003. I have many years experience from Cub Scouts to community theatre. I didn't realize some of the volunteer organizations that are out there.
As I sit down today to write my thoughts about what I would like to do in 2003 I was given several inspiring hints where to go for advice. The websites listed in the book made it so easy to get started. Idealist.org is terrific and one I wouldn't have known about without this book.
This is an area of my life that has been missing. We can learn from Volunteer for Life! I did.
A good book to read and pass along........2003-01-01
The book is simple and written for all ages. I would have liked to have read more about the author's exciting experiences and the not-so-exciting volunteer adventures. The reference section has many ideas for a start in your own community no matter what your interests are.
Achieve!!.......2002-02-16
What a great story! How inspirational! Kelly's book is so simple as is her story. A winner never quits. Having had the opportunity to see this author speak for a volunteer group and now get the book...that's winning combination.
Winning!.......2001-09-21
Volunteer for Life is a neat book. I was at an event recently where the author spoke about achieving goals. The book reveals a goal setting exercise that's helpful. She is an eloquent speaker with a message that is timely! The book is interesting, fun and thought provoking as well as helpful in finding a match for a new volunteer organization to apply your time. I was pleasantly reminded that volunteering SHOULD be fun and CAN be truly rewarding. I will use the reference guide to find a new opportunity to serve my community. We could all use a little more service in our lives and our communities will benefit!

SOPHOMORIC TRASH.......2004-05-27
This was the most mean-spirited book I've ever read. Expecting practical jokes, I found felonious stunts that could easily land you in jail. I wouldn't think of recycling it in any way. Straight to the garbage it goes. Shame on you, Gary Brodsky, as well as the publisher of this trash.
I read it, used it, and it worked!.......2003-03-14
Gary Brodsky is a certified genius. First he was able to tell me exactly what my cat was thinking, and now he gave me the inspiration to finally get my jerk of a boss back for all the grief he's caused me! Of course, it got me fired, and my lawyer says the charges might stick, but it was totally worth it. 6 stars out of five. Bravo Mr. Brodsky!
Another piece of crap from Gary Brodsky.......2001-09-06
Yet again Gary Brodsky shows that he does not care what his name is attached to as long as he can make money. This book, if it can be classified as a book, is an inferior product. The writing is full of typographical and gramatical errors. The subject matter is uninspired and poorly rendered. This book is even worse than Brodsky's other print abomination- Mind Of The Cat. Both books are not worth thinking about much less buying. If your local library has a copy of this book, try to convince them to recycle it.
Extremely funny book........2000-10-05
I owned this book a few years ago, lent it out and never got it back. The schemes here run the gamut of severity and complexity, many being quite plausible. But primarily, this book made me laugh more than almost any other book I have ever read. The cruelest ideas are the funniest. Perhaps I should feel guilty about that, but, oh well.
Waste of time, money and almost totally impractical.......2000-04-02
Not good for the real world.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Chinese Folk Belief.......2001-10-23
Many people who are tryng to understand and live the Tao philosophy will not understand this book. Simply because they do not understand the power of the mind and how it relates to the traditional living. So, if you are looking for a book to teach you about the Tao philosophy then this is not the one for you, as the title states.
However, if you are looking for a book that teaches you some of the basic beliefs in regards to the Tao philosophy for living. Then this is a great book and one you will like to have on hand.
It takes the Tao philosophy beyond just belief into actual practice. Practitioners in folk traditions will note the similarities that exist between them and other traditional cultures around the world. This is what this book deals with.
Because most people in the West have not grown to the level of understanding the practice of Ancestor honoring and the relationship that exists beteen God and themselves. They will not understand this book for another 20 or more years. This is because the West are very logical (left-brained) when it comes to dealing with spiritual living. After all, just recently the age of looking for God ended, when traditionalists all over the world have been saying all along, God is within and without...God is everywhere. So this book speaks from a very imaginative perspective. Most who don't understand it are usually trying to figure things out and how it relates logically instead of allowing the mind (spirit) to solve the problems.
This is a great book, if you want to put the Tao philosophy into practice. It is suggested however, that you study or have learned the basics of the Tao philosophy or some other occult philosophy such as the Kabbalah. As it is not necessary but it will help you to understand and see why folk believers do what they do. When you realize what the Heavens and Earth are all about, you will start to understand truly what all traditional cultures have been talking about. This will even clarify common misconceptions about traditional African and Native American religions as well. It is that simple.
Hope this
Peace
Avoid This Book!.......2001-10-12
This book is shameful! This is not Taoism. In fact, it has absoltely nothing to do with Taoism. Taoism does include ritual, and some that could be called "magic," but is at best a mixture of folk belief and ideas the author has plainly made up. The author is blatantly using the term "Taoist" in order to sell books. Avoid it!

Book Description
One of the greatest of contemporary composers has here set down in delightfully personal fashion his general ideas about music and some accounts of his own experience as a composer. Every concert-goer and lover of music will take keen pleasure in his notes about the essential features of music, the process of musical composition, inspiration, musical types, and musical execution. Throughout the volume are to he found trenchant comments on such subjects as Wagnerism, the operas of Verdi, musical taste, musical snobbery, the influence of political ideas on Russian music under the Soviets, musical improvisation as opposed to musical construction, the nature of melody, and the function of the critic of music. Musical people of every sort will welcome this first presentation in English of an unusually interesting book.

Clear your writer's block.......2006-07-06
One of the things this offers is real insight into the creative process. If you're having writer's block, I recommend these lectures for you. Igor's ideas may well help in clearing up some of the problems we create for ourselves.
Essential reading for Stravinsky devotees, but requires some background and additional reading.......2006-01-09
These six lectures were given at Harvard during the 1939-40 academic year in French. They are presented here in English translation and have been the subject of a great deal of discussion over the past sixty-plus years. In re-reading them, I have to say that my opinion of them has risen a great deal from my student days. Maybe it is because I am now about the age he was when he gave them, maybe it is because I am no more well read and have thought more about music since my youth, or maybe it is because I now see the solid philosophy and healthy insights he had and the rather unhealthy directions that academia was taking that he was resisting. Probably it is all of these.
Reading these lectures are not easy sledding for those not already familiar with Stravinsky, his life, work, and the context for these lectures. Also, the reader will need to go to the various conversation books Stravinsky did with Robert Craft to get later clarification and further insight into what he was saying. However, they are not profoundly technical in music theory. What they require from the reader is a broad understanding of music, art, and European political and religious history to have a framework for understanding what Stravinsky is saying.
The first lecture lays out what he intends to do with the lectures. The second talks about what he believes music is, what it isn't, and provides great insight into what Stravinsky believes is important in the art of music and what corrupts it. In the third lecture he talks about composition and provides wonderful insights into what it is for him. He really does undermine the common notion of the role of inspiration in composition.
The fourth lecture says it talks about musical typology (whatever that is). What it talks about is what the composer must do in choosing his own rules in composition. In Stravinsky's view the stricter the rules the more free the composer is to create. I think this is a particularly strong lecture. The Russian character in music and the Soviet corruptions of that are the topic of the fifth lecture. In 1939, taking on Stalin was a brave thing even in the West because of the way academics and the media lauded Uncle Joe.
The last lecture talks about performance issues that were of particular concern to him. This is also quite interesting because of the way performance practice became such a vital force in the last quarter of the twentieth century. His principles and desires are quite profound and interesting, and do require the clarification from the conversation books to avoid being taken out of context.
The epilogue ties things up nicely and raises the issues of ontology once again. Along the way Stravinsky over and over again talks about religion and music in the Church versus the attempts to replace religion with art (which Stravinsky considers a terrible and failed notion).
A fine and important work by one of the great composers.
about art by an artist.......2005-10-15
it is always interesting to me to read a book by an artist talking about his art. why read on the subject of some art by a critic rather than artist, who can reveal the thought process and energy that goes into the actual creation? here, the art is music, but the whole book (especially chapter three) should be read by artists in all fields. here he discusses inspiration, and the role that it plays and how it functions in making art (less than one might suppose). the crux of stravinsky's claim is that artists should always make art, as a function of their being, and not wait for inspiration (which should, in any case, be found everywhere).
being a fan of other russian composers, especially those of communist ussr, the chapter on russian composers was interesting. he discussses the role that politics played and how it stiffled music and art there.
there is also an interesting discussion on the role of the artist in contemporary times. he abhors the notions of 'modern' and 'academic,' and considers himself (and the 'rite of spring') as conservative music, and not revolutionary, while demeaning the critics and listeners whom he describes as 'snobs.' (in fact it is this conservativism that allows him to attack wagner and deride his music.) the arguments that he presents in such discussions are very enlightening for any artist, as well as a musician.
From a composer's perspective...........2004-11-13
As a composer of over 250 classical and jazz works, I can't stress enough how important "Poetics of Music" was to me in my musical development. I read this book from a composer's perspective with hopes that I could get into the mind of this great composer. From "Poetics of Music" I learned that inspiration is never contrived and always accidental. Stravinsky said that a composer "improvises aimlessly" the way an animal grubs for food. Both seek personal satisfaction. He said this in the context of the "rules of music", making it clear that there really are no rules in musical composition. All that drives us in our art is that need to find our musical satisfaction.
Essential Stravinsky.......2000-04-27
No student or lover of Stravinsky's music should be without this book. It is a rare opportunity to see into his thought processes, and it makes one realise just how much music meant to him- that he sought to serve it by understanding it as deeply as he could.
In communicating this understanding, Stravinsky makes for an engaging, if somewhat challenging, read. The book is a transcript of six lectures given by the composer to French students, and the translators have seen fit to cast his words into a large quantity of "verbal Victoriana." If at times it seems boring, it is all due to that style of language. Apart from that, it is an excellent account on the part of a man who (for all his known self-contradictions) clearly used his heart as well as his hands and his head.
For students of Stravinsky, this book is essential. As a record of his personality and thought processes, it takes some beating.

Book Description
From the first time David Cross and Bob Odenkirk's cocreation aired on late-night TV in 1995, Mr. Show began developing a cult-like following, which has only grown since the series end. This lavishly-illustrated book features original, never-before-seen material plus a complete episode guide making it a rich, unique retrospective.
Customer Reviews:
A must for any Mr. Show fan..........2006-02-19
I'm usually not one for writing these reviews, but I thought i would spread the wonderfulness that is Mr. Show. If you haven't seen it, check it out, you'll love it, and then you'll want to pick up this book. It's an amazing account of how the show started, and it comes with an episode guide, and what Bob and David thought about doing each particular show. Pick it up, you won't regret it.
This book is very tall.......2005-08-25
The pages literally dwarf my fingers. The book is printed on massive, slick paper hotglued into the spine, where sit strategically-placed ball bearings, all to make reading this monster a chore--well, unless you're reading it while lying on your stomach. Then it's easy. Plus, I must admit that I've lost 72 pounds turning the heavy pages, and all the ladies comment on my abs (the paper cuts finally healed). So, Bob, Dave, Naomi, thanks for that. You probably saved my life.
On the serious side, WHAT HAPPENED?! is strongest when the author, Naomi Odenkirk, steps back and allows the writers/performers/guest stars/hangers-on to speak, using an oral storytelling format pioneered by Legs McNeil and Gillian Gaar's PLEASE KILL ME. Its failings are more evident in Naomi's prose, which is passable and at times amusing, but could've benefitted tremendously from a more strident editor, as well as another cutthroat round of proofreading--this sleek little volume is riddled with errors, leading/font issues and consistency, and misprints.
Despite all that it lacks, it's great to have Bob and Dave on paper, and WHAT HAPPENED?! does a serviceable job chronicling the sturm and DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN of HBO's finest comedy. Recommended, but with a slow exhalation.
On an unrelated subject, I would like to take this opportunity to announce my intent to become Amazon's top reviewer. I will stop at nothing to reach this goal. Over the next few weeks I will be conducting full-scale investigations into the lives of all who precede me, and am willing to challenge even the heftiest of scribes to fistfights near the corner of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood. I have the wind of passion and hunger at my back, propelling me to stardom like Clubber Lang doing chin-ups; you folks in the Top 10 had better watch your backs. You've been complacent too long. You will taste the silver of my rapier scallawag.
Satisfying "before," disappointing "after".......2005-02-16
If you're a big Mr. Show geek like I am, you're going to buy this book no matter what any review says, so you might as well quit reading and start spending. But your satisfaction with your purchase will depend upon how you interpret the "What Happened" in this book's title. If you take it to mean "what happened in each of the episodes," you'll get exactly what you want and be thrilled to fondle its ever-stickier pages. But if you assume, as I did, that the more pressing question facing Mr. Show fans is, "what happened to cause this brilliant show to be taken off the air, thus rendering my life meaningless," you'll be sorely disappointed.
There is no discussion whatsoever about the show's cancellation, its aftermath, etc. I can imagine many political reasons for omitting this information/carping but doing so does not increase my satisfaction with this book. Perhaps the Odenkirks are prepping us for a sequel, leaving us hungry for more, but somehow I don't think so.
The strong suit of this book is the information on how Mr. Show came into being, how the cast members met, their work before the series. Some tidbits that were new to me: Bob Odenkirk wrote that SNL Chris Farley sketch about "living in a VAN down by the RIVER;" Bill Odenkirk has a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.
The only way I can satisfy my craving for more fantastic newness is by watching all of my Mr. Show DVDs, obliterating my memory with drugs, then repeating the process again and again. I recommend it highly.
Inspirational.......2004-10-25
If you're a serious fan of Mr.Show and a serious fan of comedy then you'll definately dig this book. It gives great insight into the actors themselves as well as the creation of each eposide from the early writing process to the final completed show. And for anyone wanting to get into comedy writing themselves it is truly inspirational and a must read.
I Licked This Buk.......2004-07-12
I licked this buk, I licked this buk very much. Straynge howe the two projecks released by the genyuses... sorry, the geniuses behind Mr. Show, the funniest sketch show of them all (while it lasted), both turned out to be horrendously shoddy productions. I mean, Run, Ronnie, Run? Why, boys, why?! Why center your one shot at a feature film around a character who amounts to just another typical parody of just another TV show, and Cops, to boot! Sure, David's song was sweet, but one good bit does not a movie make. The entire "let's parody Cops" comedy idea was DONE on the Ben Stiller Show 10+ years ago, NO MORE WAS NEEDED! Anyway, so that movie sucked, quality-wise (oh, but their heart was in the right place and they were only screwed by the Big Conglomorate Boys! How many times they gonna use that excuse?!) and so does this book, production quality wise. Anyway, so what. Like many of the fans have said, at least it gathers in one place all the geeky info the fans like to have, the fact that it's at a xeroxed fanzine level doesn't matter... that much, or should I say "mutch". Only complaint I have is that I felt a little like the Mr. Show creators, or "The Genius Squad," as I like to call them, were, through the half-baked premise and execution of their "film" and this "book," all excuses revolving around supposedly nefarious dealings aside, kind of thumbing their noses at the fans, as if we should all just "be cool, man" and not retain any rabid interest in this show, this "Mister Show," which we found so damn funny, so mind-breakingly inventive, and, yes, so cool that we just had to have a little more. Then again, I may be (I am) paranoid. For all the flaws the show may have had, Mr. Show is still the best thing any of these guys have been involved in to date. So, buy this book but be prepared to cringe. Oh yesss, and regarding the controversy over the short mention of Mary Lynn Rajskub. Yes, she was only on the show because she was sleeping with David. Heck, even I have had Ms. Mary Lynn Rajskub!

This guide is appropriate for those who just need to know enough HTML to get around or who want a convenient, quick reference for the little things they forgot. While far short of a complete course on HTML, this reference is much more than a mere cheat sheet. The signature light-heartedness of the For Dummies series can help make you comfortable if the giant HTML tomes are too daunting.
Topics covered include how to construct basic HTML pages, how to wisely use images on your pages, how to link HTML pages to each other, how to design attractive and effective pages, how to put your pages on the Web, how to use frames, and how to develop style sheets. Three appendices provide quick reference for HTML tags, special symbols, and cascading style sheet properties and values.
The book's design makes referencing as you work particularly easy--the book is compact, takes up very little desk space, and features a comb-bound spine, allowing it to open flat and remain at your selected page. --Elizabeth Lewis

Customer Reviews:
This is a great reference at a very inexpensive price..........2007-02-25
I love this book because it is a well-written concise reference to HTML. It is also spirally bound so it lays flat to boot. This book contains what you need to know without a lot of superfluous text. It is well-organized and collect important information into summary sections. If you are looking for a quick reference, look no further! Like most Dummies books, however, it is written on inexpensive paper. This isn't a huge drawback, however, since computer books are ancient history very quickly and only useful for starting fires after a few years.
Great for beginners!.......2005-03-12
I love this book! 7 years ago, when I was in high school, I knew nothing about HTML, so I picked up this book. And it really helped me learn fast!
Each of the book's lessons is hands-on, which makes it so much easier to pick up. It teaches you HTML by having you type the codes into the Notepad program, and saving the file as an .html instead of a .txt file. Then, when you open it up, it appears in webpage format, and you can quickly edit and play around with the codes in Notepad to see what kind of different results you get. Actually, even to this day, I still use a Notepad program instead of one of those fancy page-creator programs. I like keepin' it DIY, Old School, baby!
Some of the things the book covers:
- how to use different fonts
- how to put in images
- how to make an image map (so when you click on different parts of the image, you're sent to different links)
- how to create basic tables
- how to create numbered and bulleted lists
- how to make frames
Even though the book won't teach you some of the fancier stuff you see on webpages, like how to use non-bordered tables for layout design, or how to make text change when you roll your mouse cursor over it, it will teach you how to be able to learn those things. Since the book taught me how to view the source code of webpages and how to understand code in the first place, whenever I went to someone's website and saw something cool I liked, I just viewed their source code to see how they were able to do those things. This is all perfectly fine; just DON'T STEAL SOMEONE ELSE'S LAYOUT. Not cool, people. Just see how others do things, and use those techniques to make something of your own design.
Once you learn the basics of HTML, it's easy to pick up that fancy stuff. There's plenty of tutorial sites on the web and thick HTML reference books at the library that'll give you the codes for that. And this book definitely gives you the foundation for learning those things.
This a very good begging to learn HTML.......2004-06-28
I had new a little html before I got this book but after I got this book my web pages went from looking like something a high school freshman could do after a weekend to something that looks fairly professional I really enjoyed this book and will be getting java for dummies also if it half as good as this one
Great Little Friend!.......2004-04-26
This is the first HTML book I bought and it's become my favorite. Not only did I learn how to build a webpage from scratch, I continue to learn new tricks from it every time I dip inside. This is great if you want to learn how to code your pages and not rely on templates. There's also a quick and handy color code guide in the back.
Delightful Little Book.......2003-01-02
Over the years, I've learned many programming languages (technically, HTML isn't one, but I'll ignore that technicality). The primary way I've learned them is with books, such as those by MS Press, Sams and even the Dummies series. Many programming books are bad; the Dummies books, particularly so. They tend to overly dumb down concepts to a point of being so vague that the message is lost.
But not this book.
The information in HTML4 Quick Reference is highly concentrated. It does start out so simply that a developer new to HTML is rightfully tempted to skip the first few chapters. Fortunately, the structure of the book allows one to do this. Outside of the absolute most basic things (The structure of HTML, links and images), each part (The book is divided in to parts & sections, not chapters) stands independently. Each part is, for lack of a better comparison, a step-by-step guide.
The only real "style" the code has is that each tag is placed on its own line. It lacks indenting, something that is quite necessary in a hierarchy-based language such as HTML. But this could be as much due to the books small form-factor as the authors' personal preference.
The book does feature a writing style for code, though. One of the most important things the Rays preach is writing tags in pairs, e.g.
and then filling in the attributes as opposed as right-to-left, top-to-bottom style that many other books take. They also make effective use of formatting their own sample code with bold to highlight additions.
At least one of the reviews before me claimed the color-reference to be worth the price of the book alone. While, admittedly, it is handy, it is slightly flawed. For one, it, as with all things printed, is printed with CMYK coloring. There is a disclaimer before the colors appear, but this point needs to be stressed: The colors on screen will not match the colors on the page. The second complaint I have with the color guide- The colors appear in numerical order: #000000, #000033, ..., #FFFFCC, #FFFFFF. It would be better to have sorted them by hue or luminosity, similar to Macromedia Dreamweaver's color palette. Although, admittedly, if you're doing work in a WYSIWYG editor, this book is not nearly as important as if you're developing in a text-editor.
As far as I'm concerned, the heart of this book lies in its appendices. In an organized fashion, it lists a majority of HTML 4 tags, their attributes, a description of each tag and attribute, their status within HTML (deprecated, which version of HTML they originated in, or what browser(s) support them exclusively).
Appendix B features the various symbols (&, ü, etc.), their numeric representation, the Mnemonic representation (& = & amp;) and a description of what each represents. It would have been nice if the list was divided into categories of some sort, instead of just listing them numerically like the colors, but the natural ordering within the ANSI/Unicode character spec provides for some degree of natural organization.
Appendix C is a brief list of CSS 1 properties and values. This appendix glosses over too much, but if what you need to know is contained within it, it's faster and easier then searching for the information elsewhere on the web. Of course, my edition of this book came out less then 2-years after CSS1 was formalized.
