Good book with ~no math (extremist).......2004-11-10

This book explains in great detail every concept but when it comes to math , the author replaces it with an intuitive manner (such as : experimentaly it is know that ... so ... ; think at the water as being electric current ...).The only thing that can be considered as being math are formulas and some exercises (require basic calculus) , nothing more.So if you want to reach that formula by yourself then you must choose another book.The math beyond Electric Circuits in general is very simple but it seems that Floyd preffered to use those 1k pages to write aditional explanations instead of demonstrations.So this book is a great deal for those who want to begin designing.This book has a target audience but I think everyone in this field must own this because no other book has so many coloured graphs , explanations , many real electric components (schematics and descriptions) , experiments drawn in a real way.I'm glad that I bought this.I give it 4 stars because of no math (some portions requires it).

there are many quality first course textbooks for electric circuits...
but did u notice that these books have some gaps..

the books that cover COUPLED NETWORKS (x,y,z parameteres) don't cover much on filters or waveshaping circtuis (RC/RL integrators and differentiators) ..

and the books that cover the waveshaping and filters.. don't cover the coupled networks topic

this book covers waveshaping and filters very well.. but no mention of COUPLE NETWORK techniques... which are integral to TRULY understanding the subsequent ELECTRIC DEVICES courses...

otherwise.. the rest is very well presented

This books focuses on the fundamentals of electric circuits. It walks students very carefully through the basics of electric circuits. What I liked in particular was that the book provides examples of things like: "why would you place resistors in parallel" or "why would you place resistors in a series".

It has a CD in the back that I haven't tried yet, but looks interesting. The CD has more experiments with circuits using a simulator or two.

How writing to much statisics can hurt........2001-02-22

Hazards of the Job traces the development of the field of occupational health from a "highly diverse, localized, and contradictory" body of knowledge to a more modern science based on quantitative, experimental techniques. In late-19th-century America, occupational diseases such as lead poisoning and silicosis were on the rise but went unrecognized. Physicians were stymied by nonspecific clinical presentations, the lack of scientific data, an orientation toward individual patients rather than groups, and their own loyalties to factory owners. Workers tended to ignore symptoms, avoid doctors, and resist attributing their illnesses to their occupations, which could lead to job loss. I was a little skeptical when I ordered this book, but it's full of really good ideas. Philip Johnston has a good grasp on getting your studio business up to speed and keeping it there. I've read several books on the subject, but this one is by far the best. Even if you were to implement only one or two of his ideas it would be well worth the cover price.

This is a very practical guide for those music teachers trying to step out of the occasional role to full time home studio status. I was very impressed with the on target tips about networking and utilizing community resources to expand the `word-of-mouth' reach of your marketing efforts. If nothing else, this guide should offer you some validation for what you've done right, and ideas for what you've overlooked. Worth every penny.

This is a MUST HAVE book for any private music teacher! Mr. Johnstone has done a terrific job of putting together practical and USEFUL marketing techniques. After moving to a small rural town from a large suburban area, I found myself with only 6 piano students. Using the ideas from this book, I KNOW my studio will continue to grow and prosper! This is THE book to get started in OCAP.......2005-11-16

We started our OCAP project prior to the arrival of this book and had to rely on digging through all of the different, confusingly referenced, standards. Every chapter of this book caused a light bulb to click on with a big "ah ha!" Don't get started without reading a copy of this book. It's a 10 to 1 reduction in pain.

The authors give a well-written introduction as well as many insights into the design of interactive tv systems. This is a must-have for anyone new in this field. The book presents much more information than those on the interactive-mhp.org website.

The book you need if you are serious about IDTV.......2005-07-05

This an excellent book! A must have! I strongly recommend it to anyone willing to have a broad and at the same time in-depth view into the numerous concepts and APIs necessary for designing IDTV applications. Several code snippets are provided to illustrate how each API can be used: this can help save a lot of time as the DVB MHP and OCAP specs are a little bit hermetic.

Good Title - Expected More From the Update.......2007-02-10

I have the previous version of the book and enjoyed it. I was hoping for more of an update when I bought this version. There is a lot of the material that is still the same. However, it you don't own a previous copy it's a good security book to check out. 3 to 4 stars.

Still a great book on essential security tools.......2006-07-25

I reviewed the first edition "Anti-Hacker Tool Kit" (AHT:1E) in August 2002, and the second edition (AHT:2E) in June 2004. AHT:3E was published in February 2006. I continue to like AHT, because it addresses many of the tools an operational security professional should know how to use. I'll point out the differences between AHT:2E and AHT:3E, then offer some suggestions for AHT:4E.

The introduction lists the same "changes in the third edition" that are listed in AHT:2E. I would expect this part of AHT:3E to be different from AHT:2E! Ch 1 adds Netcat6 and mentions SBD. Ch 3 adds Virtual PC and Gnoppix. Ch 4 drops NetScan Tools, SuperScan, and Udp_scan. Ch 5 is updated to talk about Win XP SP2 and Win 2k3 Server. Ch 6 drops HFNetChk but adds MBSAv2 and updates Winfingerprint to 0.6.2. Ch 7 adds Libwhisker and Burp, while dropping Stealth, Achilles, and WebSleuth. Ch 8 drops PassFilt.dll and adds PWDump3 and PWDump4. Ch 9 adds Clamav. Ch 12 drops STAT, Retina, and Internet Scanner, and adds Cain and Able. Ch 18 adds Shokdial. Ch 21 adds FTK Imager and SMART. Ch 22 adds Dcfldd and Split. Ch 24 adds ReadPST, ReadDBX, Encase Forensic, FTK, NetAnalysis, and Web Historian. Ch 25 drops Xvi32. Ch 26 is entirely new, albeit 8 pages.

The following chapters were largely the same: 2, 10, 11, 13-17, 19, 20, and 23. A few may have had a new case study or a minor tweak. Security pro Mike Shema seems to have done a lot of the work revising old material. You can see his command prompt and tool output timestamps showing references to mid-2005.

However, old material from AHT:1E remains, like talk of FreeBSD 4.3 BETA and Red Hat Linux 6.1 (kernel 2.2.12) in Ch 1. The Vnode discussion on pp 653-4 no longer works on FreeBSD, but I posted a new method to my blog.

I believe AHT:3E would merit a fifth star if it dropped clearly old material and beefed up its newer sections. For example, AHT:3E spends 17 pages explaining Tripwire (free and commercial), despite the use of newer open source alternative like Osiris, AIDE, or Samhain. AHT:3E devotes almost 20 pages to really old back doors and remote access tools like Netbus, Back Orifice, SubSeven, and Loki. The book includes 10 pages on Ipchains, which went out of style years ago. I think sections like those should be cut entirely, or maybe moved onto a CD-ROM or Web site, to make room for more detail on Cain and Able and other newer projects.

Overall, I still like AHT:3E, but I would like to see a more thorough scrub in AHT:4E. If you don't have AHT:2E or AHT:1E, you should buy AHT:3E. If you have either of those books, you might want to wait for AHT:4E.
