Book Description

Principles of Electronic Materials and Devices, Second Edition, is a greatly enhanced version of the highly successful text Principles of Electrical Engineering Materials and Devices. It is designed for a first course on electronic materials given in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics Departments at the undergraduate level.

The second edition has numerous revisions, additional sections such as "Phonons" and "Optoelectronic Materials and Devices", more solved problems, and a completely new chapter on "Optical Properties of Materials". The revisions have improved the rigor without sacrificing the original semiquantitative approach that the students liked. For example, the thermoelectric effect now includes the Mott-Jones index (x) which is normally treated at the graduate level but has been introduced here through a semiquantitative discussion to explain the true sign of the Seebeck coefficient in metals (one of the most difficult graduate topics in quantum mechanics of metals). The problems have also been updated and various difficult figures have been redrafted to enhance the pedagogy.

The second edition includes the Electronic Materials and Devices CD-ROM. The CD includes color overhead transparency diagrams that can be printed by instructors and students on any color printer; an illustrated dictionary of electronic materials and devices; numerous selected topics and solved problems.

The text with its Selected Topics can also serve as a first course in Materials Science aimed at electrical engineers and engineering physics students. It is suitable for both one- and two-semester courses. By focusing only on those topics relevant to materials that make up electronic and optoelectronic devices, the book offers students a deeper and more meaningful discussion of this material than is offered in general materials science textbooks. The coverage is up-to-date and the applications are of special relevance to students of electronics, materials science and engineering physics. The solutions manual for the second edition is available from the publisher, the McGraw-Hill website and also from the author's website at http://ElectronicMaterials.Usask.CA.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro book for electrical and computer engineers.......2007-05-27

This is one of the best books I have read on applied Materials Science. I found it particularly useful for electrical, electronic and computer engineering students.

The author gets to the point effortlessly, addressing only basic materials concepts necessary to conceptualize a main subject. Then, to complement and deepen the understanding of each subject convenient problems are sprinkled throughout the text.

Yet, the book is intense. The student needs to be focused and ready to absorb the wealth of themes presented in a structured manner. And this leads me to another interesting book feature:

I may sound like an old-fashioned professor, but I do dislike most Materials Science & Engineering textbooks that use color figures to enhance (they think) the learning. False: Colors only serve the publisher as an excuse to raise the book price through the roof. Students need to get exposed to regular scientific, professional documents where only sparsely color figures are used (very purposefully). Kasap's textbook doesn't need that expensive perk to be clear and thorough; all figures are clear-cut without unnecessary coloring.

For instructors, the book includes a CD that DOES help and with neatly arranged slide presentations. This is particularly useful in the instruction of electrical behavior of materials and solid state physics concepts used in the resolution of the accompanying problems.

All in all, this is one of the best books on applied Materials Science that I have encountered. The price is high even for an excellent textbook as this one. That's my only complaint.

5 out of 5 stars geared towards engineering students.......2005-04-11

Kasap offers a book well suited for an undergraduate engineer, who needs a comprehensive text of semiconductors and related electronic materials. The level of physics and maths required is moderate - one year or so of freshman courses.

The important materials are explained. Silicon, gallium arsenide and others. Kasap also provides many diagrams to illustrate key ideas. Plus, this is clearly meant as a student's textbook. Many examples of problems are worked through. To some students, this may be the clearest way to understand and apply ideas.

Kasap also found ways to greatly simplify standard mathematical treatments. Expands significantly the size of the audience who can appreciate the ease of understanding. Because a longstanding issue in materials science has been that texts were often written by physicists, for physicists or physics majors. Often leaving them too abstruse for engineering students, who also had a need for comprehending the same ideas.

    Book Description

Principles of Electrical Engineering Materials and Devices, Revised Edition, is designed for a course on electrical engineering materials. The author has not added or removed sections to render this edition a second edition. However, a number of sections, illustrations, examples and problems have been revised and updated in the current revised edition. Overall, there were over some three hundred individual changes to improve the textbook. The text now includes the Electronic Materials and Devices CD-ROM. The CD includes color overhead transparency diagrams, an illustrated dictionary, Chapter 9: Optical Properties of Materials, and additional topics and solved problems. The book is found in the department of Electrical Engineering but can also be found in the department of Materials Science, and sometimes both. It might also be found in Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, and Physics departments. It is often taught between a basic electronic circuits course taught in the junior year and the semiconductors course usually taught in the senior year. This text does a superb job of "bridging" the gap between these two courses. It will is suitable for both one- and two-semester courses. By focusing only on those topics relevant to materials that make up electrical devices, the book offers students a deeper and more meaningful discussion of this material than is offered in general materials science textbooks. The coverage is up-to-date and the applications are of special relevance to students of electronics.

        Book Description

Many long-held assumptions of historians and literary critics are sharply challenged in this interpretation of the cultural consequences of social, economic, and political change in early modern London. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, greater London’s population nearly quintupled, surpassing 500,000 before 1700, making it Europe’s largest metropolis. Contemporaries often complained that the many problems accompanying this urban development were the result of immigrants flocking to the rapidly expanding suburbs around the City of London. Such complaints assumed that immigrants chose to live outside the City in order to avoid the economic oversight of its trade guilds.

Sharing such assumptions, many scholars have found an inherent conflict between residents of the traditional, orderly City and those of the relatively licentious suburbs. According to their view, this conflict encouraged both the decline of the guilds and the appearance of new forms of representation in Renaissance literature, notably in the plays staged in suburban theatres. The author offers an alternative to this view of London’s expansion.

His argument begins with an analysis of sermons, tracts, and poems suggesting that some Londoners of the time considered the suburbs subject to the same kinds of authority as the City, which consequently made them integral parts of the metropolis. The author then draws on the records of more than twenty guilds to demonstrate that many members lived and worked in the suburbs and were as capable of flaunting City traditions and authority as immigrants; trade guilds, therefore, were metropolitan by nature.

However, the extent to which guilds continued to offer a sense of community—of meaningful association—to their members depended in turn on the desire of individual members to identify themselves with their guild’s goals and values. The author argues that guilds, as principal sites for the collision of tradition and innovation, generally took a flexible approach to change rather than simply trying to prevent it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for divorced and married women.......2007-09-22

This book helped me see what I refused to see during the end of my marriage. It has also helped me see what NOT to do in the next relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Humorus.......2007-09-02

This book was an excellent story filled with humor and insight to the process of divorce. Tomi uses her personal story and pulls no punches. Having just finalized my divorce a year and a half ago, I wish had known about her book sooner.

The book contains several helpful legal tips that can save someone a small fortune while going through a divorce. More importantly, the book is written to share and help the reader go through the emotional process of divorce as well as how to manage kids, social life, work, etc.

I highly recommend this book to any one that is struggling with the emotional anxiety of seperation, the divorce process or the feeling that you may have to start the process soon. It'll make you feel better!

4 out of 5 stars A female point of view.......2007-07-26

My interest was to get an idea of the feelings and experiences I might expect while going through the divorce process and after the completed court approved divorce.
Although I'm of the male gender, it helps to understand as many sides of a situation as possible. The book helped me understand some female feelings.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be divorced to enjoy THIS book!.......2007-06-25

I bought this book because over the years I have heard lots of divorce "horror stories" from my friends and family members. I thought it would be interesting to compare those stories with Tomi's. Tomi uses humor to guide the reader through subject matter that is both personal and non funny without missing a beat. Her practical examples and suggestions are relevant to anyone who is or has ever been in any type of romantic relationship. Entertaining summer read and makes a perfect gift.

5 out of 5 stars Must read BEFORE you get married.......2007-06-14

I bought this book for my daughter as soon as it came out! I wish it had been printed BEFORE she got married! Tomi deals with the trials and tribulations of many different issues in a humorous, but informative style. I recommend it as a bridal shower gift! Great fun with a lot of information!

            Book Description

A charming parody of P.D. Eastman's beloved 1960 children's classic, Are You My Mother?,
Are You My Husband? follows the adventures of Little Chick, who wakes up one day to discover she is thirty-horrors!-and-even worse-still single. Greatly concerned about her "eggs," Little Chick embarks on a quest to find a husband. Her search takes her from swing-dancing class (where all the guys are practicing for their weddings) to her high school reunion (where she remembers why she didn't meet her husband there in the first place), from the Internet (where she fails a Prince fan's mysterious lyrics test) to AA (where her self-esteem just isn't low enough). She even tries the oh-so-gorgeous guy at the gym, but it turns out he's looking for a husband, too.

Ultimately, Little Chick comes to realize that love, like life, has to happen on its own timetable, and until it does, maybe being single isn't so bad after all.

In the tradition of Looking for Mr. Right and Even God is Single So Stop Giving Me a Hard Time, this newest bit of chick lit is the perfect anti-Valentine for any woman who's been asked one too many times, "So, when are YOU getting married?"

Whether you are happily married (like me) or still looking (like many of my girlfriends), this book is a good way to laugh at yourself. Even if you never looked for a partner you know someone who has offered you the perfect advice for finding a mate. I took the book to work and everyone enjoyed it and subsequently shared stories from their own experiences. Even the men loved it! They said it was fun to see us poke fun at ourselves.

4 out of 5 stars funny but sadly true.......2004-04-12

Hilarious! A chick looking for her husband, from ballroom dance classes to AA meetings with amusing results. Does she find him? I don't want to ruin the surprise! Suffice to say, along the journey, she realizes that whether or not she finds The Man, she can lead a fulfilling, rich life.

            5 out of 5 stars Hysterically Funny!.......2004-02-14

A friend of mine had this book sitting on her coffee table and I opened it up and couldn't put it down. This is one of the funniest parodies I've seen in years. I was laughing out loud from beginning to end. Just when I thought I had the whole thing figured out, Carpenter would come up with another unexpected and delightfully amusing twist. I've bought four and am giving them as Valentine's gifts. Even my mother (married for 50 years!) loves it. Does anyone know who Rachel Carpenter is? Has she written other stuff? I searched her name on amazon and couldn't find other books but I'd sure love to read a novel if she's got one. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars My husband loves the little chick!.......2004-01-17

My husband brought this book to work today to show to his coworkers. It is kind of cute that he is responding so well to a pink chick book...So its clearly not just for girls.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Sympathetic Fairy Tale for Grownup Girls.......2004-01-15

Even if you're not single, there is remarkable charm and understanding in this little book about being a woman in what is STILL a remarkably marriage-obsessed society. It is a pleasure and a comfort to take part in poking fun of this reality. As ever, Author Rachel Carpenter's intellectual, dry wit comes through even in the context of the whimsical simplicity of the book. Anyone--male or female--who has ever actively looked for a life partner and consistently failed at doing so (in other words, everyone, right?) will gobble up these modern words of wisdom.

            Book Description

A day after losing her job in a bank merger, all Laura Merrow wanted to do was finish up her chores and pack her bags for vacation. But the serenity of housework shattered when her husband's employer called to say that he was being rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the job. Suddenly Laura's chief concern was no longer which paperback she should toss into her beach bag but rather the life and death struggle facing her husband as he tried to survive the devastating effects of a brain aneurysm. Plunged into a nightmare of surgeons, nurses, hospital rooms and operations, Laura battles her own pain to aid in her husband's recovery. What begins as a laundry list of questions for his doctors evolves into the heart-rending narrative Can You Feel My Tears? Written to comfort and inspire other families who face a grave illness, Merrow's moving, deeply personal memoir of survival is a testament to the love of life and the joy of family.

            5 out of 5 stars Lauri's Daughter.......2007-05-15

I'm the Danielle referenced in the book. I can say having lived through this at 11 years old, reading this book when it was finally published years later was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

You should all know that it's now 2007 and Steve - my mom's husband - will be giving me away at my wedding this year. It's so great that my stepdad was given a new lease on life and has been a wonderful dad to me, my brother Jimmy, and my two sisters Dawn and Becky. We are so grateful that God was able to be with us through that trying time.

If you're going through anything - please read this book. And know that my mom and our family are with you in spirit.

5 out of 5 stars heartbreaking but so true.......2006-08-17

Lauri, I can't say enough to fully represent what I feel right now, after I just finished your book. I must admit that pretty much, along every page of your diary, I have cried. Your story is heartbreaking, and maybe it is because I was faced with similar situation. My husband of 4 months was diagnosed with brain cancer, and after two and half years of a battle, he died. The situations and feeling that you described were so true. I was with you when you held your husband's hand, and stood with a brave face. I was with you when for the first time you broke down and cried. I was with you when you were in disbelief. I was with you when you had to see your husband be wheeled out to yet another brain surgery. The strength and courage that you present are outstanding. The love and friendship that you and your husband hold, is extraordinary...
I could see myself and my husband in your story, although we were 26 and with no children, when he passed away, the pain was so real. I relived every situation all over, but at least I could somehow connect with my husband.

To all potential readers - this is a must read for all those who are faced with brain diseases. If you a spouse, a parent, a sibling, a child or a friend, it's good to know what really happens behind the closed doors. You might be needed... You should know how to deal with it.
Again, great book! Very easy to read, although I must say, keep Kleenex next to you. Hope everyone can find this book as interesting and rewarding as I did.

Fans of Mary Kay Andrews, Fannie Flagg, and the Sweet Potato Queens won't miss this sensational novel from the author of Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash. Picking up where they left off, Debbie Sue Overstreet and her pal, Edwina, are running the Styling Station and their detective agency the Domestic Equalizers. For them, there's no crime or heartbreak that a little hairspray and a little poking around can't solve! But when Paige McBride comes to town-a little bit spoiled and a whole lot rich the three soon find themselves knee deep in the muck of a horse-thievin' and husband-cheatin' escapade that sets the town of Saltlick, TX, on its ear. By the end, hair will be styled, casseroles will burn, and creeps will be brought to justice if Equalizers have their way. And love will, of course, conquer all.

Paige McBride has always been a pampered child. Daddy McBride has raised Paige in a lifestyle she has found success in, until one day Daddy tells her she is on her own. Needless to say, Paige has no idea what to do or how to get a job. Paige spent six years stumbling from colege to college but never came away with a college degree. Daddy steps in for one of the final times and helps Paige find a job she could only dream of having. She is offered a job as an assistant to a horse cutter. The catch is she has to move to a town, Salt Lick, Texas, in the middle of nowhere.

Spur Atwater finds himself nearly penniless and crossing his fingers and hoping his loan comes through so he can fulfill his dream of being a vet. New to Salt Lick, Texas as well, being single and sexy poses for an interesting welcome.

Paige meets 2 interesting ladies, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwinda Perkins-Martin, near her first day in town and they become fast friends. Debbie Sue and Edwina, hair dressers by day, private investigators by night, find themselves embroiled in a plan to thrwart a horse stealing ring. Paige is enlisted in the plan, but her relationship with Spur hangs in the balance. Can their love survive her attempts to help her friends and save the horses which are so dear to her?

Paige and Spur get themselves entangled with each other in more ways than one throughout this fun read.

Add in some interesting Texas characters, misunderstandings, good food, and a lock in in a convenience store cooler and you have a hillarious story which reads quickly and leaves you wanting more when the story ends.

I initially got this book because the title intrigued me but I found this book to be an great read. I read through it so fast I was surprised when it was over. I will look for her first book.

                    Book Description

Do you remember these great pop stars and their hits? Deerhoof's The Man, The King, The Girl Butch Hancock's West Texas Waltzes and Dust Blown Tractor Tunes, Swamp Dogg's Cuffed, Collared and Tagged, Michael Head's The Magical World Of The Strands, John Trubee's The Communists Are Coming to Kill Us, John Phillips's Wolf King of L.A., and Michel Magne's Moshe Mouse Crucifiction? You will when you read Lost in the Grooves, a fascinating guide to the back alleys off the pop music superhighway.
Pop music history is full of little-known musicians, whose work stands defiantly alone, too quirky, distinctive, or demented to appeal to a mass audience. This book explores the nooks and crannies of the pop music world, unearthing lost gems from should-have-been major artists (Sugarpie DeSanto, Judee Sill), revisiting lesser known works by established icons (Marvin Gaye's post-divorce kissoff album, Here My Dear; The Ramones' Subterranean Jungle), and spotlighting musicians who simply don't fit into neat categories (k. mccarty, Exuma). The book's encyclopedic alphabetical structure throws off strange sparks as disparate genres and eras rub against each other: folk-psych iconoclasts face louche pop crooners; outsider artists set their odd masterpieces down next to obscurities from the stars; lo-fi garage rock cuddles up with the French avant-garde; and roots rock weirdoes trip over bubblegum. This book will delight any jukebox junkie or pop culture fan.

5 out of 5 stars "Capricious," my friends, not "Ultimate" or "Definitive".......2006-07-21

The great late Lester Bangs would have loved, and hated, but above all enjoyed this book immensely. That is, after all, the point - a series of doors to (mostly) forgotten records (then again, it's all in the viewing - Captain Beefheart's "Safe as Milk" is pretty well-known already to anyone who cares). The reader may disagree, or smile with recognition, or realize that a small goldmine has been spotted and may be worth investigating. Much of the writing is informative and/or hilarious, some so-so, some a bit too coy - but, my word, people, It's Only Rock n' Roll (and a few other genres) and I Like It, and so does every writer here. Better, too, that this is a compilation of voices, not Siskel / Ebert (r.i.p.) / Roper with everything (or even Lester, as varied as his approaches could be). And I realize that $14 is a lot of money for a paperback, or it was twenty-five years ago - get real on that count (no one likes inflation, but, but...hope your local library has it, then). It's a great book for any place one expects to sit or lounge for a while, and can be read in no order whatsover. In other words, a "fun read!" Now, don't fret, just enjoy....

3 out of 5 stars Not my kind of groove .......2006-02-23

This book might be helpful to those people who appreciate some really far out "music." Unfortunately, my field of pleasure is classical, blues, rhythm & blues, 70s stuff, Broadway music, jazz, oldies - which really covers a lot of ground - some country, pop, spiritual and hip-hop. From the reviews of the people, it seems there's a reason why the music in "lost in the grooves" never made it big time. Over the years, I have heard some albums that I cherished and these never got publicized much, never made it to CD nor were they mentioned in this book. This is the reason for my disappointment. But that's me and why we have "art."

                    2 out of 5 stars Lost in Who's Grooves?.......2006-02-01

I suppose if you're a typical pop-junkie weened on boy bands and a steady diet of commercial T-40, you may have missed some of the music and musicians in this book. As an avid music fan, I never missed Christina Aguilera (though i wish i had), AC/DC, Tori Amos, Adam & the Ants, America, Paul Anka, the Archies and so many of the other artists mentioned in this book beyond the "A" section of the index. I don't necessarily blame the book, for the average American sheep plumping on a steady major label spoon-feeding of aural air biscuits this is probably much more interesting, and the teen dreamer dying to pick up the "lost" Aguilera material will be elated. For anyone who's looked beyond, followed and taken an interest in music, this will make a good coaster. Again, not the book's fault, mine for not reading more before I made the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Some gems, some impossible rarities, some overwritten reviews.......2005-08-09

This anthology scores the same high-points and suffers the same problems as a good anthology or tribute album. On the up-side, the concept (music folks writing about their favorite unknown, neglected or currently overlooked albums) is a winner. Also in the plus column are many of the recommended albums, and several of the writers (including reruns of vintage 1970s pieces from Creem, Phonograph Record, and Flash).

In the cons column, the writing is inconsistent, including some terrifically overworked copy. The picks often range into albums of incredibly marginal interest or complete inaccessibility. The editors would have done well to drop essays on obscure vinyl-only releases, as most readers are only going to be frustrated by their lack of availability.

The book's theme is often more compelling than the execution. Motivating readers to reappraise Adam & The Ants' "Kings of the Wild Frontier" - absent its original media hype - is a worthy cause, as is the championing of favorites by David Allan Coe or Swamp Dogg; but essaying obscure '70s Yiddish or ukulele albums is more of a hipster parlor trick than a really useful review. The same could be said for Dolly Parton's incredibly rare (and unreissued) first LP or mid-period Frank Sinatra Jr. albums; they appeal more as a tour through the collected authors' record libraries than useful leads.

It would have been helpful if the editors had taken the time to research the current (or recent or historical) CD availability of these selections, and provided that information as margin notes or an appendix. Thanks to Al Gore's Internet, you can track down some of this information yourself (including CDs available on e-tail, via reissue labels, in the secondary auction market, etc.), but knowing what's been reissued in the first place would be a big help. 3-1/2 stars if allowed fractional ratings.

                    5 out of 5 stars Thanks Mom!.......2005-02-01

I'm a bit biased, since i was involved, but i really loved reading this book while trying to decide what i would illustrate. I've always considered my record collection to be diverse and obscure, but this book introduced me to a ton of new music (a lot of which is hard to find). It's an encyclopedic-style index of really obscure records with reviews written by all kinds of writers, critics, musicians, etc. The great thing is it's written without all the snobbery of many obsucure record collectors. This book loves the bizarre, ugly and ridiculous forgotten records without irony or shame.

                    Book Description

The selective relish with which most American Jews affirm their identityconsuming kosher delicacies once a year, extravagantly celebrating the bar mitzvahs of their sons and the weddings of their daughtershas usually given rise to satire or consternation. The Wonders of America offers an alternative perspective, for this pioneering social history of Jewish culture highlights the cultural ingenuity and adaptive genius of American Jewish life.Drawing on advertisements, etiquette manuals, sermons, and surveys, Jenna Weissman Joselit constructs a lively and humorous account of how three generations of American Jews created their distinctive American culture. This provocative, enlightening study describes the forging of a rich and exuberant modern Jewish identity and makes it clear that it is not the theoretical debates of rabbis and scholars but the small choices of daily life that shape and sustain a culture.

4 out of 5 stars an entertaining guide to how Americans reinvented Judaism.......2005-02-22

..showing how some behaviors that some Americans might think of as longstanding tradition were really just improvisations by American Jews, or magnification of minor customs into major events. For example, in Eastern European the Bar Mitzvah was, according to one immigrant, "no ceremony at all" - but in America it became a major life-cycle event as early as the 1880s. And the common custom of listing the names of deceased loved ones on a bronze tablet is almost entirely new, dating from the 1920s.

Other rituals declined and then rose from the dead again: Chanukah was neglected in the 19th century; as early as 1884, one rabbi wrote: "The customary candles disappear more and more from Jewish homes." Christmas trees became more common until in the 1920s, savvy Jewish marketers reinvented Chanukah as a large-scale gift-giving holiday. And as a result, by the late 20th century even some relatively secular households (like mine) ignored Christmas and made a production out of Chanukah.

Shabbat observance, though still not as widespread as one might hope, appears to have rebounded slightly from the alleged "good old days"- in 1950, only 2 percent of American Jews attended a Shabbat service of any kind, a figure that I suspect is even lower than today's status quo.

And innovation sometimes came from unlikely quarters: bat mitzvahs began in Conservative, and even Orthodox, synagogues rather than in Reform Judaism (which preferred confirmation).

Other attempts at innovation thankfully failed- for example, some synagogues' attempts to water down Shavuot by turning it into a Jewish Mothers' Day.

Another interesting feature of this book is that it shows how early American Jews came to differ from other groups. As early as the 1890s, for example, American Jews had half the infant mortality rate of Italians or Czechs. Jews were also fussier eaters- a 1930s survey showed that 42% of Jewish 2-5 years olds refused two or more of a group of foods offered, as opposed to 18% of Polish-American children. (Make of that what you will).

One moral of the book: the more things change the more they remain the same. In 1893, Rabbi Maurice Harris of Chicago asked, "Can a minority move among a majority without being absorbed by it? . . . our distinctive characteristics are going, one by one; we are becoming more and more like our neighbors." Words that could be said just as easily in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Sheds light on American Judaism.......2004-12-15

This books sheds must needed light on American Judaism. Often vilified as assimilationist by their enemies, this book shows how American Jews in the 20th century adapted their faith to American religious traditions. This is illustrated most dramatically in the domestic nature of American Judaism. Rituals with a home flavor, like Chanukah and Passover, take on a greater relevance than their old world counterparts. This book vividly shows that a religion that may seem to be in their death throes have actually transmuted into something related but different than its predecessor.

This is a great resource for dealmaking, but most actors and writers that I know aren't negotiating their own deals. The trick is to get your agent to work harder at creating opportunities, so that they actually have deals to make. Yes, your agent should read this book ... but for myself, as an actor/writer the book HOW TO AGENT YOUR AGENT...is my bible. It helps me kick my agents in the butt ( without them knowing)and I get results...they're working harder and I'm getting work. Also I liked that book with all the casting directors pictures...just in case you see them in Starbucks and want to say hello.

I work at a Production company and a lot of contracts we hand to outside lawyers, but this is a good tool for me because it goes into details and discusses each point in a contract. This is something I'd love to have had many years ago, when I just got started in the business, and now that I have it, I am learning a lot of new things. There isn't any other book out there- quite like this.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't of done it without this book!.......2004-09-20

I have been working in the graphic design, layout, and web design industry for 13 years and was a die-hard PageMaker fan since pre-Adobe during the late Aldus years. I watched it grow and expand and I will never forget the excitement I felt when I found out that version 4.5 had been released and you could print in color separation! Wow, what a great concept!

Then I found out that PageMaker 7.0 was the end of the legacy and I felt as if my best friend was moving away to Siberia and was never going to return. Then I met the new girl on the block, InDesign, and all is better now. Although the first couple versions were chaotic and cumbersome at the least, "CS" has cleaned up and definitely taken a growth spurt for the better. Although it is still in it's puberty stages and is awkward to maneuver at times, it is by far one of the best programs I have worked with.

As I sat down and started my first layout project with InDesign CS, an 84 page booklet, I felt much like I did that first few days home with a new baby. You should know how to do this but know matter how many you have, they are each so different in their own ways that it takes awhile to get used to their little idiosyncrasies. Although there is endless "how-to" books out there on the market, I knew what I needed ... A Bible!

The Bible was able to walk me through everything from setting up my paragraph and character styles, saving my own unique workstations, hyperlinks, anchor points and bookmarks, and getting it easily saved to pdf format. My job requires me to utilize a program such as InDesign in a huge variety of ways, sometimes for simple layouts, like brochures, posters, etc.. and sometimes for more complex layouts that will be going to a professional printing shop or possibly need to be created to be viewed by either print or pdf format. This is one area that Page Maker fell very short in and InDesign ROCKS!

The Bible does a fantastic job of covering each of these unique needs and requirements of the user in a easy-to-understand format and encompassing all possible problems, where you were previously a PageMaker user or a Quark user. I really appreciated the tips and notes on the side and how to transition yourself painlessly from one application into the next generation, InDesign.

In just the short month that I have had a copy of the InDesign CS Bible I have filled it with post-it notes, highlighter ink, and just a few coffee stains. My advice would be if you are about to sit down and do ANYTHING with InDesign, whether you're doing your first layout in your life or you're a seasoned pro, go buy this book because you will use it as regular as the Pope uses his Holy Bible!

I knew this book had serious problems when, as early as page 7, the author stated "Select the Content tool (the hand), then click in the new frame to hold the story's headline. Type the words..."

In the Tool Window, there are two hand-icons. The first one, an icon with a hand over it, reads "button tool." One cannot click on the button tool, click on a frame, and type text. The second icon resembling a hand is not called the content tool, but the "Hand Tool." Even so, clicking on the hand tool, and immediately clicking on a frame, does not allow one to type text. What "hand" is the author talking about?

I did a search on the InDesign Help website for "content tool" and there were *zero* finds. Even in the index of this 900 page book there was no reference to Content tool (under content *or* tool, the two most logical places to look) But yet, there on page 7, the author clearly states "select the Content tool."

Another error on pages 5-7. The authors' X and Y coordinates do not match up with the figures in the book. If you open InDesign and type 4p6 for X and Y, the frame is no where near where it appears in the book's figures.

One major error and one major omission -- all by page 7. I recommend printing off the tutorial/help that comes with the application instead of purchasing this book. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.

My page layout experience starts back in 1996 with PageMaker. Back then; I had to install about ten 3.5" floppy disks on my old Mac. I think the name Aldus was also on the disks. Anyway, I've been using PageMaker until my recent purchase of the Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition, which includes Adobe InDesign CS. Now that I have my hands on a copy of the Adobe InDesign CS Bible, I can start learning to use InDesign. This book is definitely as thick as the Bible. It has 938 pages chock-full of Adobe InDesign CS information. The author says, "My goal is to guide you each step of the way through the publishing process, showing you how to make Adobe InDesign CS-also known as InDesign 3-work for you." Throughout the book you'll find icons in the margins indicating various types of information such as: Cross-Reference, New Feature, Tip, Note, Caution, Platform Difference, and QuarkXPress User. Before you start Chapter 1, there is a QuickStart Chapter. This QuickStart Chapter is intended for novices like me. It's a brief look at the basics. I quickly created a document and worked with frames, text, lines, pictures, colors, and then printed my newly created document. This QuickStart Chapter got my page layout juices flowing. As you may know, InDesign is a high-end program. If you're a beginner like me, you'll want to read this book chapter by chapter. Part I Welcome to InDesign consists of Chapter 1 What InDesign Can Do for You, Chapter 2 A Tour of InDesign, and Chapter 3 Getting InDesign Ready to Go. These chapters are vital to becoming familiar with InDesign and what it can do. Chapter 19 Creating Special Text Formatting was very interesting. This chapter covered some very professional looking text formatting such as creating automatic drop caps, formatting fractions, and hanging punctuation. I've always wondered how these things were accomplished. Now I know how and InDesign makes it easy. I can't imagine trying to do this stuff in a word program, if it can even be done. Okay, the one thing I've always wanted to do in my family newsletter is to create a picture-in-text effect. The InDesign Bible showed me how to turn my text into a graphics frame. Part IX: Introduction to Publishing was an outstanding edition to this book. It was these sixty pages that helped me gain a much better understanding of the environment in which most people use InDesign. All in all, this is a great book; however, reading this book didn't make me a professional typographer or a page layout expert. It has helped me to start using InDesign in much more of a capacity than I realized I would be able to. Since Adobe isn't going to continue to upgrade PageMaker, InDesign was the next logical step. I know, it's expensive, but if you have Photoshop you can upgrade to the Adobe Suite, which gets you InDesign. Then you'll need to get this book and you'll be on your way to creating some amazing page layouts.

                      5 out of 5 stars And I'm NOT the author . . ........2004-03-06

Anything having to do with computers, I'm entirely self-taught (having done graduate work in the social sciences at a time when universities owned only mainframes that required punchcards . . .), but I'm also thoroughly autodidactic. So when I get involved with new software of any kind, I immediately go looking for the best big, fat reference book I can find. I've been using PageMaker for about eight years to produce the quarterly journal I edit for a learned society, but decided it was time to jump to a newer program. But the series of manual-replacements published by Osborne-McGraw-Hill and Hayden, with which I've been very pleased in the past, don't seem to include a volume for InDesign, so I asked around and Gruman's past work was heavily recommended. They were still right, I'm happy to say. The opening chapters provide the clearest description I've found yet of the differences between the PageMaker approach and the QuarkXpress approach, the chapter on styles is excellent, and the whole section on prepress and packaging is now filled with Post-It bookmarks. And so is Appendix D, "Switching from PageMaker." Gruman manages to clearly explain things on several levels at once, so both the muddler-through like me and the experienced graphics designer will be satisfied. And after I've taught myself the essential differences between the old and the new, the huge amount of pure reference material will keep this volume close at hand.

As the author of the InDesign CS Bible, I'm obviously proud of the book. But there's even more information available to supplement the book at http://www.indesigncentral.com, including some chapter updates for Indesign and Mac OS X changes that occurred after the book went to press. --Galen Gruman
