Book Description

. A 192-page book, Real Essays for College & Grad School shows essays, personal statements, resumes, and letters that are part of the application process for admission and scholarship consideration at colleges and universities. Both the recent high school graduate and the individual applying to professional schools including law, medical, dental, or MBA school will find essays pertinent to their needs. This brilliant and insightful book shows proven techniques that open the door to higher educational opportunities and scholarships. This unique how-to book does not simply tell how to write an effective essays and letters; it shows how in page after page of meaty examples. The extensive Table of Contents is a road map to specific essays broken down by type of degree pursued, specific essay questions, and personal goals. The editor maintains a constant dialogue with the reader in tips and background remarks on each page. As one admissions director says, the essays can count up to 60% in the admissions process. This book shows how to make those essays and personal statements insightful, revealing, and persuasive. The philosophy behind Real Essays for College & Grad School is that both the traditional and non-traditional student applying to any organization of higher education will be judged in part on essays and letters submitted to a selection committee. It is essential that applicants aggressively market their abilities and make the best use of their opportunities to explain their shortcomings, such as a poor high school or undergraduate grade point average, in the most effective manner.

Other titles in the series to be released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Teachers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real-Resumes for Career Changers.

1 out of 5 stars How to Put Your Admissions Committee to Sleep.......2004-03-03

This book might be helpful to give you a general idea of what a cover letter or personal statement should be, but the examples given would put Richard Simmons to sleep. Do yourself a favor and take a look at "Graduate Admissions Essays" instead, which also has a lot of great advice about the whole grad school process.

The examples are also very limited in that they also do not encompass fields such as the humanities or fine arts--only social work, education, law, medicine, and a few for college and military school. I wish I could say something better about this book, but for me it was a total disappointment. None of the essays would make anyone stand up and take notice from the first line, and most start with the boring "With the enclosed information" or "College is important to me because..." A very disappointed 2 thumbs down!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful!.......2003-12-20

When I was applying for graduate school, I bought tons of guide books on graduate and college application essays. Among all of them, this one is the most useful one I found--authentic, REAL SUCCESSFUL ESSAYS! A must for those who want to have a clicking effect..

4 out of 5 stars Second Level Details, Worthwhile.......2002-07-23

This book (actually an 8.5 x 11 manual) is one level down from Helen Little's "Volunteers: How to Get Them, How to Keep Them" (the book I recommend if you buy only one), and it is a tie between this book and Susan Ellis' "The Volunteer Recruitment and Membership Development Book" for runner up.

The author's are prolific on this topic, with many books (manuals?) to their credit, but to the point of devaluing their knowledge. Instead of filtering and distilling and integrating knowledge that can be used, they are spewing out multiple volumes that require the buyer to spend precious time attempting to discover applicable knowledge. Having said that, I recommend this specific manual for purchase.

Among its positive points are its distinction among the five generations from which volunteers are drawn, and the unique strategies that must be adapted to each generation's distinct needs and expectations; its focus on the importance of understanding the differences between staff and volunteers and how to devise strategies that play to the strengths of each in collaborative ways; its direct discussion of "mandated volunteers" who have been sentenced to community service or must perform community service as part of early retirement programs; and its specific attention to how short-term volunteer tasks can be used to attract and evaluate potential longer-term volunteers.

This is a serious manual and an excellent complement to Helen Little's core work cited above.

5 out of 5 stars Important Perspectives on New Realities.......2002-01-24

In the Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter observes that today, "women must rely on themselves rather than on institutions to create careers. They must be entrepreneurs who make their own opportunities -- either within or outside of a major corporation -- or professionals with portable career assets -- skills and reputations that can be applied anywhere.....While the message of this book -- that women are caught in the midst of unprecedented social and economic changes -- will not come as a surprise to women who cope with these upheavals daily, the advice and solutions within can help women grapple with vast changes in their organizations." Then in the Introduction, Nancy A. Nichols asserts that "the very first thing that a woman must learn to manage is her femininity. From the moment she enters the work force until the day she leaves the corporate arena, she is judged not just as a manager on the job, but as a woman in the job." For that reason, women find themselves in a "double bind": those who act like a man are forced to act like a man are forced to act in a "sexually dissonant way"; those who act in a "feminine" manner risk being perceived as ineffective, "or worse yet, getting trampled on the way to the top."

The material is carefully organized within four Parts: Breaking the Double Bind, Fitting In or Fighting Back, The Balancing Act, and Tales from the Front. To her great credit, Nichols has selected a diversity of perspectives. One of the book's greatest strengths is the variety of real-world situations ("tales from the front" case studies) which illustrate key points. One of the most informative sections is Eliza G.C. Collins' interview with Lore Heap who (literally) launched Vector Graphics on her kitchen table with a $6,000 investment and built it into a $25-million company. As Heap explains, "I'm not a feminist....I feel that most women gain acceptance from peers, male or female, by proving integrity and intelligence -- not by talking about job discrimination and all sorts of other complaints. I just don't have time for that." I highly recommend this book to women either in business now or preparing for a business career. Also to the men with whom they will associate. Finally, to the parents, grandparents and other older relatives of young men and young women (especially those now enrolled in colleges and university degree programs) who also need to understand "the changing facts of work life." Hopefully, those who read and then re-read this important book will help to ensure that changes yet to occur are of substantial benefit to everyone, regardless of age or gender.

          Book Description

This new work is organized around four main themes found in interviews with more than 200 women workers. All of these women were doing "men's jobs"; they were doctors and lawyers, engineers and landscape architects, brokers and state legislators, police officers and firefighters, carpenters and electricians. They were asked five simple questions which tested the feminist thesis that women will make work more humane and egalitarian. Some of the questions include: How do you approach the job differently than the men?; What are some differences from the men in the way you do this job?; What do you see as your strengths as a woman for this job? From responses to these questions, the author shows that women are changing male-dominated work in four major ways: through a service orientation to clients, through a nurturant approach to coworkers, through an insistence upon a balanced lifestyle, and through an attraction to managing others using power differently than men. A prologue based on feminist literature precedes each of the book's four sections. Then within each of the four sections are three chapters devoted to minor themes ("No Us Versus Them," "Not Living with Stress") illustrated with direct quotes from the interviews. At the book's conclusion is a chapter titled "Reforming Men," which offers further documentation of how men have changed to be more like women in their work values, attitudes, and behaviors. This book was written for all working women and men, and can be used in variety of courses, including: Women's Studies, Business Management, Industrial Relations, Sociology of Work, Sex-Roles and Sex Differences, and Careers.

5 out of 5 stars Music Mind Games are Fun Learning.......2007-05-14

Using these games with students in group situations has an amazing effect. They actually make learning theory a fun experience, and the students learn without much "teaching". The cards are colorful, sturdy, and easy to use. The materials are also very versatile. This method is so successful in helping students learn painlessly, because it uses terms that are familiar and fun to teach the basics to very young children. I highly recommended these wonderful hands-on materials.

                    2 out of 5 stars Not Practical.......2005-01-07

I agree with the other review in that this book requires way too much preparation before each activity. Although the activies probably to do work well, the materials that you need to either create or buy are necessary in order to present an effective activity. I think I used about two lessons in my classroom, not practical at all.

3 out of 5 stars Bought with enthusiasm, hasn't worked for me.......2004-04-17

I was motivated to buy this book by the positive comments I've seen. I can certainly recommend this book for teachers who may be inspired by Mrs. Yurko's philosophies about children and music education. But unfortunately, most of the activities in this book require proprietary supplimental items (sold by Mrs. Yurko, if I remember correctly) and only a few of these activities can be pulled out to use without a good deal of preparation and materials. If this isn't a problem for you, I can definitely recommend this book. It is a problem for me, and though I flip through it from time to time, I've never used it in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for elementary and preschool music teachers.......2001-12-28

As a teacher of music students in grades 3-6, I have found this book to be extremely helpful. The games are designed to help students learn to read, write, dictate music, etc. The "Blue Jello" game and its variations alone are worth the price of the book. Although this is not a band or orchestra method book, students who spend time playing these games will certainly be more prepared when they begin to learn more advanced instruments.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-04-15

I am extremely picky about teaching resources and activities, and I cannot say enough good things about this book. The main thing that sets it apart is that everything is incredibly thought-out and organized, and there is a *philopsophy* behind everything. A lot of music teacher activity books are just a bunch of random games carelessly thrown together with little or no thought about what the purpose is, or WHY that approach is best.

Believe it or not, I read this book years after completing a music degree, and it helped me realize and understand some things about music theory for the first time. I have used these activities with grades k-8 and also in private piano lessons. It is truly excellent.

Windsail on railroad tracks, play golf in corn fields and the spillways of dams, fly to Borneo to wreck the filming of Survivor, wander around in Boy Scout uniforms, and Food Suits loaded with pork and booze, fantasize in public about sex with Meg Ryan, alienate people and seek the company of dogs and horses.

I know Bill Vaughn as a long-time friend and have previously read several of his magazine articles. However, it was only when eleven of his recent pieces were brought together in this book, that I got a real sense of what special writer he has become. My prior impression was that he was something like the Hunter S. Thompson of the modern adventure magazine - his specialty was writing for Outside magazine about offbeat sports or quasi-adventures, such as golfing a portion of the Lewis and Clark Trail or trying to crash the set of a 'Survivor' episode. You will find that type of piece in this book, but - from my perspective -- when the best of these pieces are read as whole, something much different emerges: a moving chronicle of life outside the mythic Montana of the popular imagination. In the past decade or so, Montana communities such as Big Sky and Bozeman and Whitefish have attracted people with enough wealth to build monstrous homes and spin off a small but growing economy of retainer industries (golf courses, upscale sports stores, coffee shops, good restaurants and the like). But, as Vaughn chronicles, there is still another Montana or many other Montanas - an amalgam of trailer houses, local softball teams, homegrown lawyers and doctors and business owners, liberal writers and narrow-minded bureaucrats. And a common theme among their lives is the contrast between a stirring, interntionally renowned landscape and a per capital income (and cultural capital, if you will) much lower than the national average. It is this Montana that is at the center of Vaughn's work. I started with the piece titled, "Skating Home Backward," which deservedly was nominated for a National Magazine Award. "Skating" unveils to the reader the overall span, so far, of Vaughn's life -- from growing up in "Rat Flats" southeast of Great Falls, to living with his wife Kitty Herrin, their horses and dog, on a modest piece of acreage west of Missoula, Montana, just downwind from an odiferous paper mill. From Vaughn's indelible childhood - under the influence of a single father who unabashedly embodied and espoused redneck culture - Vaughn has grown into a man capable of poignant vignettes about loss and hurt and the reclamation of what is good in people and in the lesser lands of Montana. His writing is reflective and moving and, yes, still darkly humorous. He still has not outgrown his redneck father's anger. More than once in this book, he grabs a golf club in anger and stomps off to confront a neighbor over matters of security and property. But the real find in this book is an emerging author who deserves much wider recognition, as he writes about real life amidst the glorious geography of the Rocky Mountains and High Plains.

This essentially self-published collection by a National Magazine Award-nominated writer is brilliant stuff --too bad about the anti-commercial nature of its launch (not the mention the possibly regrettable title). But hidden under this bushel is some of the sharpest, funniest, and sometime most moving personal journalism around. The gems include a story about renovating a junkyard swamp into a thriving wildlife-friendly skating pond, one about the invention of the I'll-never-be-hungry-again Food Suit (with insulated pockets for both hot food and cold beverages), and a gorgeous essay about the life and death of a great dog.

The AD&D One on One books are a great way to do some quick adventuring or to intoduce a newbie (especially a teen or pre-teen) to the wonders of role playing games. The books work somewhat in the "choose your own adventure" genre, but incorporate dice roll determined random events, battles and interactions with NPCs (non player characters) into the readers decision making. The books are a bit complicated for those starting out, so I suggest either two advanced players adventure together, or one advanced player guide a newbie through the adventure. These books are out of print now, which is a shame, but if you are interested in taking an exciting but brief trip into the world of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (and you can get your hands on one or two of these books), you're in for a lot of fantasty fun!

This book is the best of the kind.
With 1000+ pages, this book is a very broad and deep interview of windows graphics system. This book is for advanced developers. It does not teach you hand by hand how to draw a text, how to draw a window..., instead, this book is for the person who want to know how Microsoft implemented the Win32 graphics system. This book includes many windows internals and undocumented stuff.
I want to say thanks and show respect to the author 'Feng Yuan', for his kindness to publish the knowledge.

Keep in mind this book was published in 2001, I whish there will be a 2nd version, which include the new changes in Windows XP, and include details of the OpenGL's connection with GRE. And about the new Longhorn graphics engine.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Windows GDI.......2003-10-21

This the most extensive, best explained Windows GDI book ever read by me! I hereby highly recommend this book to everyone who is doing GDI intensive work.

                                  Great job, Yuan!

1 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written.......2003-10-11

After spending several weeks going over the contents of this book, I do not recommend it to the beginning or intermediate readers. Feng Yuan insight into the Visual C++ environment is excellent; however, he does a very poor job with organizing and explaining the topic to the average reader.

I had a hard time following his technical jargon; it was no different than reading the MSDN help manual, which was really cut and dry. If it was his intent to write this book as a reference manual to demonstrate the features of GDI or for the advance developer (who probably doesn't need it to begin with), then he did a very good job. However, developers, like myself, who is just getting into GDI it just left me chasing the bandwagon.

The sample code had little or no comments; it was difficult trying to match his explanation to the code sample because he would write the explanation in its entirety and then provide the code sample at the end. Feng, if your reading this, please provide the code explanation in the context that it is being referenced. I had a hard time referring back to your code sample while following your explanations.

If you are a developer of C++, I recommend Kris Jamsa who does a very good job of organizing and structuring his books. If only Kris wrote a book on GDI, I would have opted for it than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Best description of GDI fonts I've seen.......2003-03-19

I can't speak to the strengths and weaknesses of the entire book as cited by other reviewers, but it's clear that text rendering was the author's primary motivation to explore the depths of GDI. Chapters 14 ("Fonts") and 15 ("Text") deserve to be expanded into a volume of their own. If you're a developer seeking a thorough understanding of the way Windows deals with text, from the low-level details of the TrueType font file format to the undocumented quirks of the higher-level GDI APIs, you simply can't do any better than Yuan's book.

I tested many code and contents of this book and discovered many misunderstandings and erros.

While reading and testing, I'd got doubtful of the reliability of this book.

This book provides many useful information, but don't swallow whatever this book says.
