The cap and gown have had their day in the sun and the honors-winning thesis is already yellowing at the edges. You're a college graduate now, and it's time to decide what you're going to do to earn your keep. If you are like most recent college grads, once you start down this path, the first thing you learn is how little you actually know about finding work, no matter how swimmingly you performed in anatomy, Eastern philosophy, and calculus. What you need is a good text.
Margot Carmichael Lester's guide to careers treats you like a novice (though not like an idiot) and teaches some essential job-hunt precepts that a lot of people could do with learning or reviewing. The chapters (including "Prep Work," "Landing a Job," and "The Realities of Working") each provide a quick summary of main points, and they are worth the price of the book (CD-ROM aside!). Starting with the fact that, in 1998, 1.2 million college graduates are seeking jobs, the book deals with basic but oft-ignored truths (for instance, you need to pay your dues, because glamorous yet highly compensated jobs are rare), and it offers the advice to figure out what you enjoy, what your personality is suited to, and what skills you need to update to improve your marketability.
With a CD-ROM that comes packed to the gills with software extras and online connection resources, as well as an easily navigable version of the book, the usefulness of the Real Life Guide is tripled. Even if all you ever do is integrate the lessons of chapter 1, you'll be far ahead of the pack of job-seekers who're vying for the positions you want. --Stephanie Gold
Customer Reviews:
A book for who wants to get a good job.......1998-11-22
Lester used humor and orgainzed writing metholodgy to teach you how to start your career. She acted as a mother to give you much advice on evaluating yourself and employer, writing resume, preparing interview and following up; but I sure your mother never told you these.
searching for the right job? buy this book, problem solved!.......1998-06-29
I spent six weeks looking for a job before I bought this book, and one week looking after I read it. Great strategy, easy to read. Helped me get my current job.
Everything I DIDN'T learn in college.......1998-04-24
I recently bought Real Life Guide to Life After College to learn how to write my resume. This book includes software to build a paper resume and an online one also. I graduate next month and already have tons of interviews set up thanks to the tips in this book. Although I haven't yet read them, there are sections in here on managing your money and the Internet too.
Got me a job!.......1998-04-24
I am about to graduate from New Mexico State University with a BS in Marketing. I bought this book, followed the directions, and I landed a cool job that I start right after graduation. The biggest thing I got out of it was how to approach interviews and sell myself to the interviewer.
Excellent - and practical - advice.......1998-04-01
You might be able to find a number of books with advice on starting your career, but you won't find one with as consistently good advice - or as practical. At the same time, the Real Life Guides give you a readable book. With advice like this, hopefully you'll be able to avoid mistakes others have made for you.
Book Description
This volume makes two important contributions: First, it provides a framework grounded in theory and best professional practice that middle and high school teachers, their students, and community partners can use to design, implement, and evaluate service-learning projects that address authentic community needs. Second, it demonstrates ways collaborative service-learning can enhance students' intellectual development, promote their academic achievement, strengthen their citizenship skills, and accelerate the kinds of educational accountability and reform initiatives emphasized in the national educational standards movement, and the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act.
Serve and Learn: Implementing and Evaluating Service-Learning in Middle and High Schools:
*provides what may be the only comprehensive guide to implementing, assessing, and celebrating service-learning in today's middle and high schools;
*emphasizes and explicates a collaborative approach to service-learning in which teachers, students, and community partners team together to advance learning and meet genuine community needs;
*demonstrates how service-learning teams use key elements of standards-based education, multiple intelligences theory, and cooperative learning to guide project development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation;
*offers optional designs for service-learning projects that are suitable for use by interns and beginning teachers, as well as by experienced and master teachers, and that can be used in a developmental sequence by school and community partners to build from small, individual projects toward school, system, and community wide projects; and
*includes end-of-chapter activities that help those who use the book as a text to practice the model and its strategies, and use results to create their own service-learning projects.
The book is organized in three parts that present service-learning along a theoretical to practical continuum. Part I lays the foundations for the method by proposing a collaborative model for service-learning. Part II explicates this model and explains the four sets of processes that teams use to commit to a project, cooperatively determine students' project outcomes and ways to measure them, develop learning activities to help students achieve outcomes, and then evaluate their projects and celebrate growth. Part III provides resources for carrying out the collaborative model.
A wide range of educators will find this book useful. Its distinctive contributions and features are particularly valuable for teacher educators, students, and community partners already committed to service-learning projects; to those who are introducing service-learning into their practice; and to instructional supervisors, school administrators, and community agencies seeking to create a climate for service-learning or to enrich initiatives already underway.

Book Description
Well after the disintegration of the Communist Party and the Soviet state--and through several years of economic collapse--industrial workers in almost every sector of the former Soviet Union have remained quiescent and the same ineffective and unpopular trade unions still hold a virtual monopoly on worker's representation. Why? While many argue that labor is a central variable in the development of economic and political systems, little is known about workers in the states of the former Soviet Union since the fall of Communism. In a comparative study of two groups of industrial workers--the coal miners and steelworkers--at the end of the Soviet era, Stephen Crowley sheds light on where these workers have been and where they are going.
Coal miners in the final years of the Soviet Union effectively organized and led strikes which supported the end of Communism, even though their heavy subsidies would be threatened by capitalism. Steel workers, in contrast, did not effectively organize and strike. This pattern has continued under the new governments, with the coal miners effectively organized and seeking protection from the worst consequences of marketization, while the steel workers remain weakly organized despite deteriorating economic conditions.
Based on extensive on-site research including interviews with miners and steelworkers, labor leaders and plant managers, Crowley develops a detailed picture of the conditions under which workers organize. His findings have application beyond the conditions of post-Communist Russia and Ukraine to other societies undergoing fundamental change.
This book will be of interest to sociologists and political scientists interested in the role of labor in transitional societies, the patterns of organization of labor, as well as area specialists.
Stephen Crowley is Associate Professor of Political Science, Oberlin College.

Smile...great gift book.......2007-05-13
Full of wit and fun this book is the perfect gift for anyone who loves dogs...or needs to smile! I have this on my book shelf and also had to add the "Bad Kitty's Guide to Life" to the shelf as well. Great gift or pick me up.
A "Bad Puppy" tells all.......2005-05-09
This is one of the best gifts for dog lovers that I've found in a long time. It's actually written (tongue-in-cheek) for dogs, with truly funny examples of how to be "bad" while remaining cute and lovable. I love the illustrations -- I laugh every time I pick up the book!

Mystical One: George Harrison
After the Break-Up of the Beatles
This biography covers the years 1969 to the present day and celebrates George Harrison's career as both a musician and independent film producer. Mystical One focuses on the music found in the solo albums that Harrison released from 1970, his sporadic tours and live appearances, his work with The Traveling Wilburys, and the fascinating catalogue of unreleased songs lying in his vaults, and his latest record, Brainwashed. The book also delves into the personal life of the least written about Beatle, covering such fascinating episodes as the high profile break-up of his marriage to Pattie Boyd and the "My Sweet Lord" plagiarism case, the reformation of The Beatles and his battles with cancer, plus the traumatic events of 1999 that saw him nearly killed by a mad intruder into his Oxfordshire home. This is the very first in-depth critique of George Harrison's solo career leading up to the days of his untimely death on the 29th November 2001.
Elliot J. Huntley is a writer based in Sheffield, England.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting read, but not much new material.......2006-11-14
Huntley's book is adequate for a passing fan, but in terms of new material or insight it seems a bit lacking. That is not said as a major flaw of the book. On balance, the factual material seems to be there.
I do realize this is an "essay," but I wish he had left out the overly editorial comments particularly those reflecting his opinions of the musicians George Harrison chose to back him on tour and in the studio. Such commentary did not add a bit to my appreciation for this work.
Great book........2005-09-26
I've been a George fan for many years, and although I knew most of the info, the format of this book put the events of his personal and musical life in a sequence that I hadn't picked up from reading other books. Definitely recommend this to George fans.
post-Beatle stories finally collected in one place.......2005-01-05
I can not fault the research done on this book. It is pretty solid. Most public highlights in George Harrison's life are explained in detail here. I would say go ahead and read this book to fill in the gaps or to clarify your understanding of George Harrison, but do so with some caution.
There are two incidents about George Harrison I had hoped would be explained in much greater detail. Unfortunately, having read this book I still have questions about (1.) why George started visiting Hawaii in the 1970s (At the time I read disturbing reports in magazines about George's safety in the U. K. resulting in these trips!) and (2.) the frustrating and abrupt termination of his business partnership with Denis O'Brien resulting in the end of Handmade Films and reports of serious financial problems.
I had also hoped to have the tenets of George's religious affiliations explained in detail. I never once heard George refer to himself as a Hindu (he would call himself a devotee of Krishna but never use the term Hindu) in spite of his near-lifelong study of the Hindu religion. Everyone who knows about George knows he was facinated by the religion native to the Indian subcontinent but know precious little about its beliefs. Here would have been a good place to help readers learn more about about this Faith.
The thing that made me uncomfortable with this book was the fact that genuinely harmless people close to George, including Ravi Shankar and Billy Preston, are victims of unkind words made at their expense, possibly just for the sake of humor, but hurtful just the same.
Try Some, Buy Some.......2004-10-01
This is an excellent biography written in a very objective style. Huntley does a good job in covering the life, art and times of former Beatle George Harrison.
The youngest Beatle who was often reported as a man who cherished his privacy would probably endorse this book wholeheartedly. The writing remains general and objective and the author appears to view George with respect.
I think this is a work people ranging in mild interest in the Beatles to avid, inveterate fans will enjoy this book and think about it long after having read it to the finish.
A MUST!.......2004-07-22
I love this book and go back to it on a regular basis, and I am a fan who has more than 100 Beatles-related books. It just grabs you and keeps you with its humor and unique perspective. Elliot Huntley's fondness for George is palpable. But at the same time this is not hagiography. The author pokes fun, from time to time, at George Harrison's seriousness regarding gurus and spirituality, but always with affection. The detail and insights are terrific. Too many authors take the subject of the Beatles overly seriously, and such is not the case here. Mr. Huntley manages to shine light on much about George and his music, and for once I came away with some really wonderful tidbits about my favorite Beatle. Your collection is truly incomplete without this gem. Can't wait for Mr. Huntley's next book!

Book Description
This book is a tutorial on, and a guide to the deployment of, Public-Key Infrastructures. It covers a broad range of material related to PKIs, including certification, operational considerations and standardization efforts, as well as deployment issues and considerations. Emphasis is placed on explaining the interrelated fields within the topic area, to assist those who will be responsible for making deployment decisions and architecting a PKI within an organization.
Customer Reviews:
Clear explanation for system architects.......2007-03-16
This book details PKI architecture from a vendor-neutral perspective; perfect if you need to understand how PKI fits into your enterprise system design. I disagree with some of the other reviews that claim this book is for managers. The reviewers making these statements might be code hackers who don't care much about the overall technical structure. It is great for system architects. PKI is an infrastructure, not a programming language.
This book made a better sermon than a technical read.......2006-07-30
I've read many books on PKI and there are not many good ones out there. This one used to be the best among some very awful books, which wasn't saying much. It was excellent on covering the standards of PKI such as they exist, but otherwise said very little about installation, layout, protocols, and design, common problems, and real world solutions. Most of what they said was repeated multiple times throughout the book. Sometimes even on the very next paragraph. They took two/three pages just to say that the top down approach to PKI planning is better than slapping in a service just to support a single product. Stating the obvious didn't win any points with me. They discussed outdated or barely used protocols like SET, and didn't bother getting in depth at all with protocols that are in use like SSL. They discussed Single Sign On like a simple PKI install will solve all our problems, completely missing the outstanding problem of vendor interoperability. Active Directory and PKI are only mentioned in passing with no operational details. Get Klaus Schmeh's book or the Housley book instead.
Terrific explanation of PKI.......2006-01-16
This book does a terrific job of explaining how various applications can use PKI and what PKI requires from an infrastructure stapoint. Part III, Deployment COnsiderations, is exceptionally good at how can PKI can be used from a practical standpoint. Strikes just the right balance between theoretical and practical. Technical detail was totally sufficient for me and included everything up to but not including a discussion of the actual mathematics behind public key encyrption.
Highly recommended!!
Has value for Technical Architects / Security Analysts.......2004-05-08
I think there's some merit to people expecting a more hands on approach in a book like this. But those expectations seems unrealistic. The book is not titled "Implementing PKI," it's called "Understanding PKI."
There is value in a concepts book. For experienced technical professional trying to get a grip on the terminologies and concepts of security and PKI, this book is succinct and touches all the major points.
For those looking for screenshots of people right clicking icons, there's a thousand other books like that! Most of those so called "technical books" are not that technical. It's nice to have a book that's not product specific for a change.
This book does what it intends to do well. There is a need for more technical books but this book is valuable in it's present form. I have given several copies to peers.
I hope this review helps you balance out your opinions before deciding for or against this book.
Nearly worthless.......2003-03-23
I bought this book because of the excellent reviews it got. However upon reading this I can't see any justification for these reviews. First of all it is very high level; I mean appropriate for your manager's, manager's manager maybe. This book is all about fawning over Diffie Hellman and philosophizing about how pki should be used etc. There is no technical information in this book, no code, no flow charts, no diagrams, no data structures. It doesn't even explain how pki is applied, for example to ssl. All the real information in this book could have been condenced to a few pages. I really needed this book to be good and it was not. Look if you want to go to a cocktail party and impress someone with no technical exposure then maybe this is your book. Otherwise there must be better choices.
