Customer Reviews:
Insight that's good for all ages.......2003-09-18
So you've just graduated from college or are otherwise about to enter the workforce. Now what? This book attempts to give some answers.
This book doesn't try to say that Career X will be the fastest growing in the next 10 years, or entry-level jobs in Career Y will be worth a certain salary per year. It asks questions like: What is your goal in life? A goal of "making lots of money" would seem to indicate a career in computers or the financial sector. What if you are not cut out for computers or the financial sector? Start with something about which you are passionate, and brainstorm from there. A boring job, no matter how lucrative, is not worth it.
Everyone wants to find their ideal job immediately. Life doesn't work that way; it's supposed to be a learning experience. Every job, no matter how boring, is just one step closer to that ideal position. Employers are more interested in real enthusiasm (passion) for a job or demonstrated abilities in, for instance, problem solving and logical thinking, than in a degree in a certain field.
When faced with an unsuccessful job interview, some people consider it no big deal and go on to the next one, while others get very depressed and upset with themselves. The difference is called Perspective. Try cutting a huge task into smaller pieces, and be sure to reward yourself when you accomplish those smaller tasks.
Why is it that, in a friendship, we can accept the other person, warts and all, and give without thinking about it, but in a relationship, much more attention is given to how much each person is giving or taking? Ignore the drumbeat of society which says that a person "should" be married or in a long term relationship by a certain age. Your time may come earlier or later in life. When it comes, you'll know.
If the relationship with the parents was difficult (in any sense of the term), consider forgiveness. The intention isn't so much to let them off the hook, as to let yourself off the hook. That way, you can get past whatever emotional hold they had on you, and get on with your life.
This book is a keeper. It's recommended not just for college graduates (all of whom should read it), but for people who have been out of college for awhile. It's got a lot of insight that's good for all ages. It's really worth it.
One more book before you leave college & it's good!.......2003-01-21
REAL LIFE NOTES will help you take back your authenticity, your originality, your passion & your life after years of being molded & manipulated by the education system.
REAL LIFE NOTES deals with the five basic terrors ahead of every student who is finally graduating from the American education system - Career, Perspective, Relationships, Parents & Yourself.
Kenneth Jedding has written one of those lively self-help books that doesn't have a pompous opinion in it, although it has a slew of quotes from world renown writers & thinkers, like Winston Churchill, Lin Yutang, Aldous Huxley, Helen Keller, Oprah Winfrey.
A perennially perfect gift for everyone graduating into real life.
Great for College Students!.......2002-01-15
As a junior in college, i simply loved this book! it offers wonderful ideas on how to deal with life after college. from career paths, to dealing with your parents! what i liked about it so much, was that it wasn't like other college grad books. jedding explains that finding a career that you like will be more successful down the road rather than a job that will only make you money. Reading this book really gave me a new way of thinking about my futre and i would recomend it to anyone who is graduating and heading out into the job force.
You have to buy this book !.......2001-06-12
This book is a "must have" for newly graduated students looking at entering the working world, for young adults who are trying to find their way, or to anyone wanting to be entertained and informed at the same time. The book is an easy read, and the author shares his personal experinces and philosophies in a way that is engaging and helpful.
A much needed book.......2001-05-29
When I first picked up this book, I though it was simply a guide on how to find a job after graduation. Fortunately, it is much more than that. It gives some great advice on how to mentally prepare yourself to handle all that uncertanty that comes after getting that diploma. The author is very clear and concise. He doesn't overwhelm you with complicated terms or strategies. Using some of his personal experiences as examples, he provides you with a more optimistic and practical way to approach life in general. This one is for people who cannot stop worrying about the future or finding out what they want to do in life.
Customer Reviews:
Simply outstanding.......2003-04-24
Ideal book for all kind of Job hunting letters, one will ever come across, the letters are simple, heartfelt and not academic and dry like written by a school boy.
Some find it novel way of writing job hunting letters.
But effective believe me.
Great Examples of Letters for Job Seekers-And Fun to Read.......2003-04-06
After a section on writing effective correspondence, this book provides models of the many letters needed in a job-seeking campaign, including 1) telling your friends about your job hunt; 2) requesting a meeting; 3) announcing your availability for part-time, temporary and consulting work; 4) substitutes for resumes; 5) targeted mailings to employment agencies; 6) respnses to want ads; 7) guidance to references and information on your achievements; 8) introductions to hiring officials you do not know; 9) preparing your prospects for a phone call; 10) a response form that makes it easy for people to reply; 11) informing people who might help you find a "hidden" job; and 12) thank you letters informing people you found a job!
This is one of the best books in the hundreds I read for possible inclusion in the bibiography of Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding A Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder and Dyslexia by Dale S. Brown.

Customer Reviews:
Logical and comprehensive.......2002-11-14
As a recent college graduate with little experience writing cover letters, I found this book to be extremely helpful! It offers a logical, step-by-step guide to preparing cover letters. Most importantly, it forces the reader to really think about what they are writing and who they are writing to rather than just a one size fits all, fill in the blanks kind of approach that many of these books take. The sample letters are excellent as well.

The Kid's Guide to Service Projects: Over 500 Service Ideas for Young People Who Want to Make a Difference (Self-Help for Kids Series)
ASIN: 0226964833 |
Book Description
James Youniss and Miranda Yates present a sophisticated analysis of community service's beneficial effects on adolescents' political and moral identity.
Using a case study from a predominantly Black, urban high school in Washington, D.C., Youniss and Yates build on the insights of Erik Erikson on the social and historical nature of identity development. They show that service at a soup kitchen as part of a course on social justice gives youth the opportunity to reflect on their status in society, on how society is organized, on how government should use its power, and on moral principles related to homelessness and poverty. Developing a sense of social responsibility and a civic commitment, youth come to see themselves as active agents in society.
The most authoritative work to date on the subject, this book challenges negative stereotypes of contemporary adolescents and illustrates how youth, when given the opportunity, can use their talents for social good. It will interest readers concerned with the development of today's youth and tomorrow's society.

Book Description
In a provocative study based on extensive original research, Karush reinterprets Argentina's first experiment with electoral democracy. By the early twentieth century, massive immigration and rapid economic growth had generated severe class conflict. In 1912, the nation's elite attempted to defuse this conflict by enacting electoral reforms designed to incorporate the working-class children of immigrants into the body politic. The book reconstructs the ensuing struggles over national identity and political representation as they played out in Rosario, then the country's second largest city.
Most of Rosario's politicians saw democracy not as a means to extend representation to subordinate social groups but as a nation-building tool aimed at transforming class-conscious workers into classless citizens. Intent on preserving their own hegemony, these politicians tried unsuccessfully to banish appeals to class interests from the political marketplace. Karush draws upon a wide range of sourcesincluding the mainstream and anarchist press, political speeches, popular literature, and tango lyricsto show that in the voting booth and on the picket line workers selectively appropriated and manipulated the various identities made available by politicians and popular culture. In charting the course of Rosario's political history, this book also offers a new perspective on both the collapse of Argentine democracy in 1930 and the rise of Peronism in 1945.

The formula for surviving motherhood!
Customer Reviews:
Not What You Think.......1999-10-05
I was very disapointed in this book. I bought this book for my Daughter who is a working mom to a four-year-old. I thought it would provide coping strategies for her. Not so. All but one of its chapters deals with women who are pregnant and not yet mothers. This is hardly what one would think from the title, if my definition of "mother" is correct. All the situations in the book were to inform expectant mothers of things to expect. I will be returning this book as unsuitable for intended purpose.
Book Description
This is the powerful memoirs which an ailing Dmitri Shostakovich dictated to a young Russian musicologist, Solomon Volkov. When it was first published in 1979, it became an international bestseller. This 25th anniversary edition includes a new foreword by Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as black-and-white photos. "Testimony changed the perception of Shostakovich's life and work dramatically, and influenced innumerable performances of his music." - New Grove Dictionary
Customer Reviews:
Stop buying this book.......2007-07-23
Regardless of this book being a "good read," I think its existence is harmful to the name of Shostakovich. Much research has been done by Laurel Fay in regards to this--check out The Shostakovich Casebook for more information regarding this, as well as a good read about Soviet culture and Shostakovich's life. But this book is not for those interested in Shostakovich, and the fact that it is so popular is disturbing since so much of it is so false.
An important view into the composer's musical life.......2006-10-01
I bought this used from an Amazon vendor for the Shostakovich year about the same time I bought the new set of symphonies by Kitaenko and the Cologne Gurzenich Orchestra. I didn't expect I would listen to all the symphonies before finishing the book, which I expected -- from everything I'd read about it for 20 years -- to be a riveting engagement.
Sad to say, it was not. The book is a set of professional memoirs from the author at the end of his life, presented through the voice of Solomon Volkov, who knew the composer as editor of a Soviet musical publication.
Since the book covers Shostakovich at the end of his life -- he told Volkov not to publish it while he was alive -- it is a tome of his bitterness built up over the decades. Shostakovich goes on for pages about other musicians, people lost to the Stalin purges, his teacher Glazunov and others in the Soviet artistic intelligentsia. The book covers virtually no personal ground for the composer; there is nothing in it about his children other than a few photos.
Many of the famous quotes attributed to Shostakovich, including "my symphonies are tombstones" are included in the text. You have to get about halfway through the thing before it goes into any detail in the important matters about Shostakovich's music, its hidden messages only legible to those who knew him at the time, and what he had to do to publish these works during the era of Stalin's Soviet realism.
Shostakovich's famous wit and cynicism appear much earlier in these pages. His distaste for Toscanini is recited in the first 25 pages. He's onto a split view of Stravinsky 5 or 6 pages later. Not much later, he says Prokofiev had the soul of a goose and a chip on his shoulder. A few pages later he called Russian conductor Alexander Gauk "a rare specimen of stupidity." He has even harsher words for other composers and artists.
I was a little disappointed by all this, to be honest. I expected more of a polemic on Soviet society and less of a laissez faire view of the composer's artistic life and friends. The book spends more time on Shostakovich's trip to New York in 1947 and his disdain of American reporters than it does on any aspect of his childhood, marriages, or life with his children. And that wasn't much, either.
Still, this is an important perspective on the 20th century's most important and accomplished symphonist, whose music has been celebrated this year. Through its discussion of Shostakovich fulfilling the Russina "yurodivy" role, we intrinsically understand the finale of his great 5th Symphony is the joy of forced labor. We have an idea the noisy and cacaphonous sections of his 4th Symphony are his fear of the secret police taking him away. We know his 8th symphony is more about ther rigors of totalitarianism than Russia's Great Patriotic War.
For this, the book is an enduring view into the mind and artistic life of the composer that probably best illuminated life in Soviet Russia. There is no mirror of the composer that was considered a faithful communist and wunderkind after composing the wonderful and joyous 1st Symphony. That person does not exist in this book and his memoirs are not included.
Conversations With Shostakovich.......2006-09-15
Testimony: The Memories of Dmitri Shostakovich has undergone a lot of scrutiny since it was published in 1979. It was accepted as authentic by many at the time, was treated as a fraud and by others and with skepticism by people like Maxim Shostakovich. Seventeen years later, I think that we can accept this book as memories related to Solomon Volkov by the composer; this year a new edition of the book will appear in Russia with a foreword by Shostakovich's daughter Galya and Maxim. Their acceptance of the book has helped to convince me that it is authentic.
However, this is hardly a comprehensive book of memories. The book covers Shostakovich's professional life rather than his personal life; there is little mentioned about the composer's family. His wife Nina is mentioned only once in noting that Lady Macbeth was dedicated to her. The important people in Dmitri Shostakovich's professional life, like Glazunov, Tukhachesvsky and Meyerhold are much more fully portrayed, and there are some interesting anecdotes about them and many of Shostakovich's colleagues. But perhaps what is most fascinating parts of the book deal with the frustration and horror with which Shostakovich describes life under Stalin. I found this part of the book chilling and reading it gave me a fuller understanding of what life is like not only without freedom but to live with fear.
The book reads like an interview but without the questions that are being asked of the composer. It is as if a series on anecdotes were collected together to form each chapter. But what has always convinced me that the majority of Testimony reflected the composer's thought is that these anecdotes square with encounters with the composer that were recorded by his friends and colleagues. Compare the information from Elizabeth Wilson's book on Dmitri Shostakovich to Testimony and similarities can easily be found. Mstislav Rostropovich considered this book to be a collection of anecdotes made by the composer.
I find that the text flows nicely and the informal tone makes for fast reading. Although Testimony may not be the perfect book of memories it does represent an important source of Shostakovich's thoughts on his career and many of the people he worked with.
Be Careful.......2006-01-16
How can one really rate this book? It has obviously created a camp of "scholars" (known as the "revisionists") who would like to change the biography of Shostakovich, and provide concrete (anti-Soviet) meaning for his music. While this makes for interesting reading, the truth is the authenticity of this book is questionable. One should (at least) be aware of its criticisms before taking this book as truth!
Of course, Shostakovich is one of the most profound composers in the history of music, and we should interpret his works. But to ascribe a certain meaning to his music based on words that cannot be authenticated would only impoverish his music. Great art is meant to be contemplated for a lifetime, not easily understood. There are some who, after reading this book, have tried to over-simplify Shostakovich's art.
If you are reading this book for academic purposes, be careful. Ensure you explore all the debate over "Testimony." I suggest reading "A Shostakovich Casebook" edited by Malcolm Hamrick Brown immediately after reading "Testimony." Good luck.
Undoubtedly a fraud.............2005-12-23
Althought a fascinating read, the evidence overwhelmingly proves that 'Testimony' is a fraud. Laurel E. Fay's two studies of the subject, 'Shostakovich vs. Volkov: Whose Testimony?' (1980) and 'Volkov's Testimony Reconsidered' (2002) completely destroy the evidence for the validity of this work. Basically, the only pages of 'Testimony' that Shostakovich signed are completely stolen from earlier published words of the composer, absolutely word to word, maintaining even the pagination of the original articles. This, despite the fact that Volkov (who worked for the paper that published these) denies any knowledge of them.
'Testimony' should definitely be read alongside 'A Shostakovich Casebook' (edited by Malcom Brown, 2004) if fellow readers wish to gain a more complete understanding not only of these 'memoirs', but of Shostakovich himself.

Loopy, funny, but not to be taken too seriously.......2003-01-07
Decadence and debauchery at 35,000 feet would sum up this book, a rather screwy and hilarious account of the ultimate customers from hell. I can see why a lot of people might be turned off from this, but it's brain candy for anyone who deals with the public -- dishing dirt and naming names. As someone who's worked retail for years, I can say I appreciate much of this book, and the dirt dished is by turns shocking, depressing, and just flat out hilarious.
That said... well, the fact that so many names are named tells me that a lot of what's said here is either fish stories or falls into the "you can't make this up" category -- celebrities behaving badly, celebrities behaving well, and incompetent management. Yes, it's all incredibly low-class, but that's what the author (who was known in those days by the nickname "Dirty Diana" herself, even though she claimed she didn't engage in all of those things... yeah, right...) wants you to think.
Those who have never worked service jobs probably can't appreciate this except as a highly questionable, if extensive, piece of celebrity gossip; therefore, you might decide on a read to agree with those who gave it one star. That's understandable; it's not a book for everyone. Prudes and those with no sense of humor need not apply. As for me, I'd very much like to know who the attendant she referred to as "Body Beautiful" who went on to her own sitcom was...
definately not first-class--the author, her book, MGM Grand.......2002-10-03
Basically its a gossipfest about celebs who throw tantrums and get real drunk on the MGM Grand airline (now defunct). Oh and her coworkers who seemed to service every celeb at the snap of a finger--it's just plain sad. And for some reason, MGM Grand flight attendants made great sport of constant farting in the plane. How stupid can it get...I had the feeling that the author was trying too hard to appear cool and witty often throughout the book. And I realized I didn't like the author much--she was cruel in her writings more than once for no reason other than to gossip about an aging flight attendant who was trying to stay youthful (and preserve her job)--the nickname she gave her was just plain mean. The author is the kind of person I usually avoid in favor of people with better and kinder things to say. If you are thinking of reading this book, buy the National Enquirer, it's cheaper and you can line your bird cage with it. PS: Diana, "Kujo" has more class in her vaseline jar than you'll ever have in your little finger. Meow.
A Vulgar Waste.......2002-06-22
What a waste of time!! I have no time for a vulgar, decadent woman. Unless you are human slime yourself, stay away from this book!!
DIANA, YOU TELL IT LIKE IT IS--GO GIRL!!!!.......1999-09-26
After hearing your radio interviews (I laughed my butt off) and hearing the flight attendants and pilots talking about your book, I just had to get a copy. If you're still out there flying some where I'd love to pat you on the back. The stories and views of catering to the celebrities in flight were right on girl. Anyone with seniority in the airlines will always pick Coach to work to avoid the egos, arrogance, rudeness and tantrums of the rich and famous. Your tongue in cheek outlook will not be picked up by many. Life as a flight attendant, your fellow crewmembers, the behind the scene antics and even the foul language is right on the mark. I'm sure the corporate suits at the airlines are still cringing but rest assured we applaud your guts and honesty. I just re-read your comments on Diana Ross since she just hit the headlines with more of her ATTITUDE. You called that one didn't you?
Don't Waste Your Money.......1999-08-11
This has got to be one of the most stupid books I've ever started to read. It wasn't even cleverly bawdy. It seems as if the author thinks she's a literary giant by using the "F" word at least once, but usually more, on each page. She and her cohorts must have put this book together in a couple of hours. Certainly there is no substance to speak of. To sum it up...White Trash.

Book Description
A systems analysis approach to enterprise network design
- Master techniques for checking the health of an existing network to develop a baseline for measuring performance of a new network design
- Explore solutions for meeting QoS requirements, including ATM traffic management, IETF controlled-load and guaranteed services, IP multicast, and advanced switching, queuing, and routing algorithms
- Develop network designs that provide the high bandwidth and low delay required for real-time applications such as multimedia, distance learning, and videoconferencing
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various switching and routing protocols, including transparent bridging, source-route switching, Inter-Switch Link (ISL), IGRP, Enhanced IGRP, OSPF, and BGP4
- Effectively incorporate new technologies into a network design, including cable modems, DSL, Gigabit Ethernet, and VPNs
Top-Down Network Design is a practical and comprehensive guide to designing enterprise networks that are reliable, secure, and manageable. Using illustrations and real-world examples, it teaches a systematic method for network design that can be applied to campus LANs, remote-access networks, WAN links, and large-scale internetworks.
You will learn to analyze business and technical requirements, examine traffic flow and QoS requirements, and select protocols and technologies based on performance goals. You will also develop an understanding of network performance factors such as network utilization, throughput, accuracy, efficiency, delay, and jitter. Several charts and job aids will help you apply a top-down approach to network design.

Comprehensive as both a reference and working guide.......2006-07-02
This book is a very comprehensive reference source and working guide for 3G mobile networks. If you're only going to buy one book on the subject, this is it.
Top-Down Network Design is a MUST HAVE BOOK!.......2005-12-13
I purchased this book with the intent on gaining a further understanding of the network design process. I really didn't expect the book to give me as through an understanding of network design as what has turned out to be the case. Coming from the network support side this book has been a tremendous compliment to my support and logic in how traffic flows from A to B. I feel now that after having read the book which is an EASY READ that I have come away with enough knowledge to auctually design and implement a small to midsized company network. The authur does an outstanding job of presenting to the reader the many processes involved in through network design, network logic, and what exactly happens when your pc 1st boots and why it takes so long for the logon screen to appear "if this is the case on your network", and countless other topics. If you are just getting into network design or have been in the field and are a seasoned veteran I highly recommend that you add this book to your networking library.
Measure Twice, Cut Once.......2004-08-30
Like the carpenter, the network designer does well to develop a plan before purchase. The title, Top-Down Network Design, is accurate because the author's key approach throughout the book is to consider what works best for the end user and meet the goals of a Request for Proposal. Priscilla Oppenheimer has presented a well structured textbook that covers every facet of networking in general with the intent of training the reader in the best practices of network design. The point of this book is to discourage going straight to product catalogs and picking out hardware when assigned a network project. Even if the customer is not given an RFP, the designer should present an overview of the project that includes the goals and how those goals will be measured.
The reader should have some basic knowledge of networking. However, this would make an excellent text book at a university or trade school since Oppenheimer covers all of the logical concepts and physical aspects of modern networking. The well read and experienced network engineer will find it a good review with a unique insight or tip sprinkled just often enough to make it worth the read. Except for the CCDP exam, the book is primarily a supplement to the student, but a must have reference for the consulting and design professional.
Oppenheimer gives well thought through, easy to read descriptions of technologies. For example, page 208 gives the most succinct explanation of how IPv6 works I have ever read. Another practical lesson is her definition of the "Heisenberg uncertainty principle" as "the act of observing something can alter what is observed." Consultants should be careful that their analysis doesn't become a problem in itself. Top-Down Network Design is a reference you will want to check yourself and those you hire.
Greenfield or Retrofit -- read this before you design.......2004-08-16
Top-Down Network Design, Second Edition is both a new terrific book and still a terrific book. The original took a systems approach to designing a network which could provide the service the people paying for it expected, partly by getting them to clarify their expectations and needs. The new Second Edition does this, too, but it includes material relevant to the networks being implemented today, and they are very different networks than we saw even three or four years ago.
New technologies, such as VPNs, VoIP, IPv6 as well as v4, Gigabit Ethernet and 10GigE, etc. are covered as part of a networking solution, not just as cool and sexy technologies to be rolled out for that reason. Likewise, new business emphases like reliability, redundancy, resiliency (which are not the same thing), security, and even survivability are addressed. Not all new technologies will help solve these problems, and, more often than not, they aren't even necessary. Thoughtful planning is far more important, and working with the network as it is now, toward what it is desired to become, is how you can really solve these problems.
I think one of the greatest techniques you can learn from TDND, 2e is to characterize the flows of traffic on the network. Priscilla Oppenheimer gives several examples of developing such analyses in a variety of situations - campus networks, WANs, a design testing scenario, and so forth. The Appendix with workstation bootup traffic information is especially helpful - the only thing I would have liked to see that I didn't was a little more detail on the contents of the various packets involved, but it is an Appendix, and using a sniffer will let you see them for yourself.
I have both the original and the new Second Edition - and getting the new one is definitely worth it. Networking has changed, and this book will help you handle the new material.
excellent methodology - must read.......2003-07-04
ms oppenheimer has written a book that every networker should
read. she describes a concise method for analyzing and designing
internetworks.
admittedly she follows many of the tenets that comprise version 1
of the ccda (i haven't taken/looked at the newer version of the
test) - but there is a reason that cisco has helped to design
and support some of the largest and most complex networks in the
world...they follow a consistent, easily replicated, and scalable
model for networking.
network design is similar to putting a puzzle together - this
book simplifies that puzzle. if you are designing a network,
please read this. if you are managing someone who is designing
a network, please read this.
