Excellent book for kids who want to improve their communitie.......1999-09-11
Our world would be a better place if we were taught from an early age how important it is to serve and be active members of our communities. This book offers ways to do this.
Clear, contemporary language for a much needed service.......1999-08-31
This is a great book for mentoring programs, schools, local neighborhood communities, church groups, and after-school programs (or even regular school curriculums). Clearly written and well formatted, it contains information about how to get started on community projects to help others and keep kids interested and stimulated beyond the modern TV and video watching activities, whether it be under adult supervision or even how to start to get the adult support kids need to be able to do the projects mentioned. Descriptive outlines of what you need to do are extremely helpful and easy to follow - the author seems to know how to connect to a young audience and keep the older ones interested, too, using contemporary language and tidbits of her own experiences in some cases. A great resource for teachers, community leaders, churches, and neighborhood activists who want to get their kids more involved and active with services to others.

great topics, difficult read.......2005-05-21
When I saw the local college had this book, I just had to read it. Turns out, there was a waiting list for it that kept me in line for 4 months. Unfortunately, it was not worth the wait.
The chapters in this text will make you want to salivate. They are diverse topics on this matter. I thought I was in for something great.
I was let down. This book is for hardcore employment market experts, not everyday readers. There are so many regression analyses and ANOVA charts, what little of college statistics that I remember could not help me out. The book jumps from comparing women of color to the general workforce, white women, and men of color that it is easy to get lost.
The book has far more chapters about Black women than Latinas. They should have named it "African-American Women and Latinas at Work" as opposed to the other way around. Still, in discussing Latinas, they have one chapter on Puerto Rican women and another on Chicanas. Thus, they were trying to be cognizant of Latina diversity.
I am not saying, "Don't pick up this book!" I'm just saying I found it far less inspiring that I had hoped.

Over a period of four years, from l992-1996, the world's best comic book artists adapted sf Grand Master Ray Bradbury's best stories in a series of different graphic novel formats. Now, for the first time, the best of these stories by the illustrators comics fans crave are collected in a single affordable volume. Each story is accompanied by an introduction by Bradbury. Among the stories and illustrators paired together here are:
COME INTO MY CELLAR illustrated by Dave (Watchmen) Gibbons
THE GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN, illustrated by P. Craig Russell (Sandman)
A SOUND OF THUNDER, illustrated by Richard Corben
HOMECOMING illustrated by Steve Leialoha
Also featuring Daniel Torres, Wayne D. Barlowe, Dave McKean, J ohn J. Muth, Mark Chiarello, Mike Mignola and Michael Lark
As booksellers get more selective about graphic novels, this all-star line up will appeal to its audience for it author and artists.
The illustrators have enormous popularity for their work on high-profile comic characters such as Batman and the Hulk.
"A Sound of Thunder" film adaptation scheduled for summer 2003 release. The film stars Ben Kingley (Gandhi, Sexy Beast).

Must Have for Bradbury/Comic Fans.......2006-01-23
The Best of Ray Bradbury contains illustrated adaptations of some of Ray Bradbury's most famous stories. The text and the art unquestionably captures the essence of these classic science fiction tales from the 1960's. The language and clothing reflect the time period, and are not modernized. Reading it, I felt as if I was holding a yellowed paperback published in the 1970's. Definitely authentic.
The art for each story is unique. No artist's style is the same. Best of all, Bradbury (who is still alive and writing) has written a moving introduction to the book. The introduction really touched my heart. It has to do with following your dreams, and how he got his start in writing sci-fi. And as a delightful bonus, Bradbury has written brief introductions to each and every story in the book!
Good stories, good art.......2004-11-30
Bradbury, more than most well known SF writers, put a human face on his tales of maybe-if and far-away.
Here, some of comics' best artists put faces on Bradbury's tales. On the whole, the matching of artist to story was brilliant. Jon J. Muth's watercolors illustrated an eerie, atmospheric experience within another mind. Harvey Kurtzman's geometric, brash figures walk through a noir murder mystery, narrated by the deceased. Richard Corben's piece opens the book, showing not a hero or has-been but a never-was, who screws up 65 million times over. P. Craig Russell's pictures give life to two stories, both that want the kind of majesty he puts into visual storytelling. All that, and lots more.
These are good comics - masterful artists rendering a master's storytelling. Good for anyone who like narrative comics or who likes Bradbury. I have the good fortune of being both.

Good but missing some things........2004-10-06
Its great to see classic Bradbury stories adapted into graphic peaces. Only one compliant; the book description mentions HOMECOMING illustrated by Steve Leialoha, this is not in the book. Homecoming is a favorite of mine, and I imagined it would be great illustrated. But nonetheless I enjoyed the book for the great stories, and beautiful art.
second edition corrects page order of first edition.......2004-07-19
hey! ibooks has reprinted ray bradbury graphic novel with the pages of 'the city' corrected. the book is now a bargain!
Misprints!.......2004-03-27
I bought this at lunchtime and sat in the car to read the first two stories. I found both Thunder and The City rather confusing and in fact began to think The City had the pages printed out of order (although there are no page numbers). So I though I'd the web! Sure enough, daveydooski saw it too.
The occasional typo I can understand, but this kind of screw up is unforgivable!
But I love Bradbury, and having some stories interpreted visually in this way is a treat. Only for the completist probably.

Download Description
Foolish/Unfoolish is a collection of vibrant and honest "reflections on love" by R&B singer Ashanti. Ever since she was thirteen years old, Ashanti has kept journals of her poetry, thoughts, and ideas about life and love. Now, in this very personal collection, Ashanti presents her poems about love, along with stories about what (or who) moved her to write them. In Foolish/Unfoolish, Ashanti explores such universal themes as falling head-over-heels in love, becoming insanely jealous, feeling broken-hearted, and being single but having hope for the future. In "No Words," she describes being completely addicted to a new boyfriend; in "Ride Out," she captures what it feels like to be joyriding with your man on a hot summer night; in "Insecure," she writes about telling a suspicious boyfriend to stop driving by her house at night to see if her car is there; and in "Us," she delves into the pain of discovering that your man is cheating on you. Spirited, moving and often filled with humor, Ashanti's poetry and reflections will entertain and surprise as they offer an intimate look into the life of one of today's most popular performers. These are works that are both lyrical and raw and which tell the truth about love.
Customer Reviews:
Lacks Depth.......2005-10-25
I agree with all of you who take into account the fact that Ashanti wrote these poems when she was in High School, however, I was in high School when I read it and was apalled at her skills. How can such a great song writer be such a terrible poet? It didnt make sense to me because I equate both those processes to be one and the same. I found her skill at writing these poems minimal, most of her content childish and amateurish. They lacked not only alot of emotional depth, but maturity.
Granted Ashanti is no Maya Angelou, but she's not an elementary school kid either, that is, it is the level her work can be compared to. I felt like I was reading the work of a fourth grader, if it wasnt for the content.
I love Ashanti, but I dont love this work. It just seems like people in her PR dept thought it was a good idea to put out something like this to capitalize on her popularity. Nothing but a ploy to make more bucks! Don't waste your money or better yet, check it out from the library.
to Derek M.A. Alexander.......2005-01-28
In response to Derek M.A. Alexander, while you and other reviewers made good points about Ashanti's work reflecting her younger and current age, the samples I read were poor, and I have taken into account that she wrote them when she was younger. This has nothing to do with her literary or educational level or even or maturity. Frankly, I've written better poems when I was younger, and I write better poems now. [...]
It's not the worst poetry book I've ever read.......2005-01-11
"Foolish/Unfoolish" is very much like T-Boz's "Thoughts" in terms of structure: poetry is intertwined with antedotes and somewhat misguided advice for the consumer. Unlike "Thoughts," which dealt with T-Boz's ideas about things she didn't understand (like Marilyn Manson, in my opinion) and things she did (like her troubles with sickle-cell disease), this book deals with 1) Ashanti's poems, 2) what Ashanti thinks about love and 3) Ashanti's love life in high school, especially her proms. I have to admit to liking some of the poems--"Watch Me Glisten" and "To the Club" are my favorites--but one has to remember that she wrote all these poems in high school, meaning that they lack maturity and possibly a few good edits that professional poets would do before releasing poetry books. Every poem in Ashanti's book could be written by any junior high/high school girl in America (whether they're in a honors English class learning about "fancy-smancy" poets like Ashanti brags about or not); when I think of Ashanti's poems, I think of the girls in my 10th grade honors English class that still wrote sappy poems about love (and I wasn't one of them). There's nothing extremely special about most of these poems (unless you include the fact that parts of "Gotta Get Out" and "Us" were used as interludes on "Chapter II" and "Concrete Rose," respectfully). As for the antedotes, my favorite is when Ashanti forgets to pick up her sister to take her to a dance...to reveal the rest would be a spoiler. Otherwise Ashanti is either trying to provide good advice for teenagers in love or talking about her boyfriends. I couldn't care less about her boyfriends--she comes off as this preppy, popular, lovestricken teenager with fairly mundane adventures. If I grew up with her, I probably would be an outsider watching Ashanti maneuver her way through the popular crowd, not giving a damn about whether she would be homecoming queen or not. And since I am four years younger than Ashanti, practically her peer, I can't really take her ideas about romance seriously since I feel she lacks the romantic experience and confidence to give good relationship advice. (I also feel that she has some hang-up about sex, since she never delves into the topic fully in this book or in several of her romantic songs.) I feel that Ashanti could possibly be a good writer (and, sadly, for you people hoping she should never write a book again, she's inked deals to write more books for children) if she were a bit wiser and confident in love.
Foolish/Unfoolish : Reflections on Love.......2004-07-03
If you see this book or audio cd in stores RUUUUUUN it stinks oh my god I read the book first and it was boring so I was like I'm going to hear her read the book since she wrote it I thought she was going to put personality into it but she failed If they had a rating that was 0 or -1 then she'll deserves that
This Book Is For DIE HARD Ashanti Fans Only!!.......2004-04-27
I don't think Ashanti really put this out to show that she was some great poet, I think she was told by her handlers to put out one more thing for fans to buy. Strike while the iron is hot. This books is for die-hard fans only because they'll be the only ones to really get something out of this. I found the entries to be redundant and wishy washy. In one "reflection" Ashanti is trying to tell young ladies they don't need a man, love yourself, and play hard to get. Then in the next "reflection" she's saying that she wants to be with her boyfriend constantly, it's ok to have a little jealousy in your relationship, she's sneaking out of the house and from school for a guy. Which examples do you want young ladies to follow? It's one thing for Ashanti to write about her experiences but if she's trying to pass on lessons at least lead by example. It sounds like she was doing big girl things at an early age, some girls are mature enough for that but many are not. I give this book 2 stars instead of 1 solely based on the strength of her fans. They'll love anything she does like a true fan would, so I can see how they'll eat this up. Maybe with a little more time and proper editing this would have been much better.

Customer Reviews:
laguna beach life insidw the bubble.......2006-11-03
very ggod read and well thought out all about the stars which was ggod
amazing book.......2006-07-06
for all of you laguna lovers this gives the insight you need to no longer be confused about the drama that happened before the show even aired. it is awesome!
Remember the "drama" of junior high school? Want to relive those "intense" experiences?.......2006-05-16
If you do remember the "drama" of junior high, the "intense" experiences that in retrospect seem rather silly, then look no further than this collection of stories. If you watch Laguna Beach as a guilty pleasure and want that kind of heavy-hitting back-stabbing action, you might be a little disappointed. Any serious fan will enjoy learning the backstories of the real kids of Orange County, but otherwise the book is a little lacking.
There are tons of pictures inside, but most are in black and white, except for a few glossies in the center section.
The cover of the book states clearly "Media Tie-In," so this book is advertised as exactly what it consists of. If you want a media tie-in and Laguna Beach is your favorite show, here you go. If you want racy drama, go watch the show, or, better yet, find another novel or story collection.
♥.......2006-02-20
This book is one of the best ever. It shows really funny, sad, and exciting stories that happened to the Laguna Beach Cast when they were little.
I recommend this book to everyone, especially if you're a Laguna Beach fan.
not what I expected.......2006-01-12
I bought this book without really reading the description. my fault...but it isn't what I expected at all. I was thinking it would be like other mtv books, with lots of juicy info and glossy pages with pictures. It was all black and white expect for a few pages in the middle. It's almost like reading a teen book of stories...at times it's hard to believe these kids grew up to be such richy rich backstabbing teens. I love the show as a guity pleasure, but shouldn't have bought the book.
