    Product Description

Volunteering is so pervasive in the United States that it can be observed daily in almost every aspect of life-from giving blood to handing out political leaflets. The problem is that volunteering, because it is so pervasive, often goes unrecognized. The historical chapters of this book present an overview of the involvement of volunteers in every area of American life and trace the effect of this involvement on American institutions, professions, and social events. Yet presenting a history of volunteers is not enough. We needed to define terms like volunteer, which has many connotations, and note how the past gives direction for the future. We feel that the ramifications of our historical data are important-not just the history itself. In fact, our perspective on the past gave us a way to address some concerns we have about the present, including: The ways in which volunteering is often misunderstood and therefore volunteers are incorrectly stereotyped as meddlers, do-gooders, radicals, or untrained and unpaid labor. The frequent assumption that volunteering is only done by select segments of the population, such as seniors or women. The tendency to credit volunteer work only in the social welfare area and not to see the many volunteer activities in other aspects of American life, such as political and cultural. The assertion that volunteer involvement is a substitute for adequate funding. By The People puts these issues in historical perspective and suggests implications for the future. There is even an entire chapter specifically on the evolution of the profession of volunteer management.

This is written in your typical historical style. Which if you love history is great, but to the other who do not, it is somewhat boring. Hard to read.

From the supplier: Mediation is a useful technique in resolving land-use conflicts, and planning consultants are often well-situated to serve as mediators. Many states have established offices of mediation that keep lists of mediation experts and there is even a professional group called the Society for Professionals in Dispute Resolution. Dispute resolution methods in planning departments can be set up in much the same way as businesses write mediation clauses into their contracts, and planning schools can develop curricula that help planners attain and develop dispute-resolution and mediation skills. Several examples of successful mediation are discussed.

3 out of 5 stars Promising theses but not much legal advice.......2007-08-07

I wish the author really shared his legal expertise with the reader rather than beating around the bushes. The book could and should be much more succinct and to the point, while still easy to read/listened. Instead we get a lot of common sense notions, and many repetitions of the obvious, and not enough actual legalistic information.

I've listened it in the digital format, and from more than 7 hours of audio, no more than 1 hour can be classified as legal advice. The rest is crowd-pleasing filling. Based on the subtitle $600 per hour legal advice, I defintely didn't got $4200 worth of legal advice.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all- married or not.......2006-01-24

What were you thinking... we have all asked ourselves that question many times! This book really makes you ask yourself the tough questions that are useful before, during, or after a marriage (or any relationship for that matter). The expertise and insight that Barondess has in regards to marriage and divorce is unique, as well as entertaining! Just the tips on working with an attorney in general are invaluable! I believe everyone who has had, or is thinking of having, a committed relationship (not just getting married), should read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Very insightful on the impact of marriage and divorces.......2006-01-10

The author tends to engage in conjecture at times, but overall, his book is very insightful on the divorce process and it definitely makes one realize all the practical implications of a marriage. People often decide to marry when they are on such an emotional high that they do not realize how tough it is to merge lives and property together.

I would have liked to have seen more commentary by relationship experts such as Dr. Phil instead of celebrities, but I suppose the author is trying to show how even celebrities have the same marital issues as everyone else.

4 out of 5 stars What Were You Thinking?.......2005-10-30

I am only 1/8 through this book and I WISH I had read this when I was 18. I am 52 and have been married to two sociopaths. A lot of the book verbalizes things many of us KNOW but we IGNORE. I recommend reading this to anyONE contemplating marriage. It's a wake up call. Makes you THINK. Some of us need someone to SAY things clearly in black and white. That would be ME. Well here it is... I plan on writing another review after completing reading this book. Stay tuned...

5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS... BUT TOO LATE FOR ME.......2005-10-19

My bride (we are still writing thank you notes for our wedding gifts) and I sat up until 2am the night we were given this book, laughing and reading parts of it aloud to each other. We both loved the part cautioning readers that whatever bugs you about your intended before the wedding will only get worse as the years pass... so true. The author, a tough divorce attorney, takes a pretty hard line: if you don't want to get divorced, then don't get ever get married. Well, we already did exactly what he advises against, but there was still plenty of valuable reading here. It gave this newlywed lots to think about... particularly enjoyed the interview with Gene Simmons, of all people, about relationships. Funny cartoons. Very enjoyable book.

                    Book Description

THOUGHTS KEEP FLOWING teaches us how to empty ourselves so that we can be refilled. The poetry of Part One reminds us that there are times when life calls upon us to make a positive contribution to humanity. If we are wise, we immediately heed the call and cautiously begin sowing the kinds of seeds that are destined to yield good fruits and influence the world far beyond what we are capable of thinking or imagining. We pour out of ourselves those character-building lessons that teach others how to listen with their hearts. It is then and only then, after pouring from our hearts, minds, and souls will we find that we have even more to give and that the "THOUGHTS KEEP FLOWING." Part Two of the this book is the first segment of a sequential novel where the author takes us into the lives of a family of characters who show us what it means to share similar surroundings but completely different experiences. When Beth Fisher decides to sell the family homestead, she commands a reunion that invokes a continuum of emotions, ranging from repugnance to ecstasy. Join this dynasty through a myriad of episodes that include: molestation, loss of virginity, abuse, mayhem, death, pain, sickness, sorrow, joy, laughter, and tears - all against a backdrop of southern dinners and family traditions. There has never been a walk down memory lane quite like this one.

I read this author's first book, and I could not believe how the poetry seemed so personal to my life. I didn't think he could improve upon his first book, but I was pleasantly surprised. His style is truly a revival of writers from times gone by. His command of the language and the essence of this writing are compelling, classic, musical, sensitive, full of passion, and personal! He writes about life, colors, pain, non-sense, laughter, and even death in such a way that is simply amazing.

... "What Were You Thinking?" by Kenneth Robert Spring. Mr. Spring grew up summering in Onset, Massachusetts, and getting into all kinds of adventures on and around the water. Those adventures continued into adulthood, and the author eventually decided to preserve them in this collection. Fishermen will thoroughly enjoy many of the boating and fishing misadventures, and even the stories that don't directly relate to either will be entertaining to anyone who appreciates the culture that surrounds a coastal fishing community.

"Look back on your youth and just about everyone participated in some wild or crazy things. Many were hilarious and you have often retold them. But there were some experiences that even now you can't believe you did or lived through them. Certainly, you hope your children never follow in your footsteps. What is most fascinating about these stories is that they will bring a rush of memories of the same type of experiences you had when you were young. You'll enjoy this book." Well, I read this book cover to cover. It's a definite must read for the serious musician who wants to learn about the music business and how it works. The music business is pretty confusing but this book is written in a way that is completely understandable. It has a lot of information such as music publishing, legal topics, and agreements. It also has Q&A sections from Henry Rollins, Fred Croshal (Maverick Records) and Neil Gillis (VP of A&R at Warner/Chappel Music). Bobby Borg was my instructor and I know he knows his stuff. The music industry is an arcane language, but this book makes everything easy to understand. Everyone in our class was happy to be able to study of off such a book. Buy it! it's worth it.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a SERIOUS musician or if you are truly serious about being in the entertainment business! I bought this book at the TAXI Music Convention in Hollywood, California after sitting through one of Bobby Borg's seminars. I thought to myself why not buy it and read it after all that is why I attended the Music Conference in the first place: to expand my knowledge about the music industry! That is exactly what this book does! In fact I like this book so much I bought 4 extra copies for my bandmates and a couple other people that I work with in the entertainment industry. This book is very easy to read and has tons of useful information in it. Once again if you are SERIOUS about being in the Music Industry you owe it to yourself to read this! Trust me you WON'T be disappointed!

                            Book Description

The reluctance of contemporary Irish playwright Brian Friel to speak with the press is legendary. Fortunately, his willingness on occasion to grant interviews has fortuitously coincided with the productions of his pivotal works, including the highly celebrated Dancing at Lughnasa, recently released as a motion picture starring Meryl Streep. In this comprehensive volume, theater critic and scholar Paul Delaney gathers an amazingly broad and consistently engaging range of Friel's conversations with interviewers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Friel talks with disarming openness about his own life. He is also surprisingly candid in decrying a "dehydration of humanity" in Pinter and an "abnegation of life" in Beckett, in pondering the dangers of Irish writers who are "having to use a language that isn't our own," in revealing that his plays grow out of a willingness to "delve into a particular corner of yourself that's dark and uneasy," and in talking about the way that Dancing at Lughnasa manifests his sense of "a need for the pagan in life."
Friel has preferred to talk primarily with Irish interviewers throughout much of his career, and many of his most important interviews were printed in rather obscure publications. Brian Friel in Conversation makes available interviews that were formally virtually inaccessible, as well as more recent interviews in places such as the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography and discography of Friel interviews to aid further reading and research.
Paul Delaney is Professor of English, Westmont College. He is the author of Tom Stoppard: The Moral Vision of the Major Plays and editor of Tom Stoppard in Conversation, a collection of interviews.

                            5 out of 5 stars Correction...........2006-11-27

I think the previous reviewer made a mistake regarding the actual rating stars of this item, based on his/her written response. This book is wonderful and gives a great background on Friel. For scholars of Irish theatre and Irish history, Friel represents the link between the early 20th century drama of the Isle and the later writers. He is a common key that reinvigorated the Irish theatre scene to tackle the emerging problems of a modernizing postcolonial state. The price is a bit steep, but a must have for the Irish theatre scholar.

If you want to understand Friel you have to read this one!

This book is full of helpful information in screenwriting. It is easy to understand and a go to if you get stuck in the middle of writing. I recommend this to all screenwriters.

4 out of 5 stars Good to read, you will not waste time........2007-08-28

This was my second book about screenwriting. thats mean I had a good background of screenwriting when i decided to buy and read it.

For starters this is an excellent book to know every detail. some informations repeated in other chapters but u can skip if u understood them.

Too detailed and direct too! just as the title said.

the most thing i liked in this book is the "Formatting a Screenply". the book well organized and that is why i gave this book 4 stars. if its organized why some informations repeated in other chapters?

if this is the style of for dummies series, you can ignore my words about repeating.

                              3 out of 5 stars A smooth, decent guide.......2007-07-22

If you're just starting out, this is a decent guide. There are other books which cover the basics like The Bare Bones Book of Screenwriting that are more simple, clear and precise. Overall Screenwriting for Dummies does its job.

2 out of 5 stars Same ol' song and dance.......2007-04-10

A friend of mine bought this book and shouldn't have. Laura Schellhardt isn't a seasoned pro at screenwriting, she is a TEACHER. Not a good one at that.

Yes, the book is informative, but it doesn't say anything different that any other book does, other than the Screenwriter's Bible by David Trottier. Trottier is a professional writer with numerous credits under his belt. So my advice is to "Schell" out an extra dollar so you can buy the Screenwriter's Bible and just leave Screenwriting for Dummies alone.

5 out of 5 stars good book. too much information in one book........2006-06-01

I bought it 1 month ago and I haven't finished it yet. it's more of a reference book. I refer to it quite a bit. her writing has flow and easy to understand. I personally don't like "dummies" series but this one is good.

I wish she had a CD with it for search and indexing. this book has lots of information, I orginally planned to finish it in a week and I am still reading it.

I haven't bought it for actually writing a script but for a project I am working on.

probably the best I've seen so for.

                              cheers

                              Product Description

Updated for SAS®9, this second edition is an easy-to-understand introduction to SAS as well as to univariate and multivariate statistics. Clear explanations and simple language guide you through the research terminology, data input, data manipulation, and types of statistical analysis that are most commonly used in the social and behavioral sciences. Providing practice data inspired by actual studies, this book teaches you how to choose the right statistic, understand the assumptions underlying the procedure, prepare the SAS program for the analysis, interpret the output, and summarize the analysis and results according to the format prescribed in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Step by step you will learn how to perform the following types of analysis: simple descriptive statistics, measures of bivariate association, t tests: independent samples and paired samples, NOVA and MANOVA, multiple regression, principal component analysis, and assessing scale reliability with coefficient alpha. This text is ideally suited to students who are beginning their study of data analysis, and to professors and researchers who want a handy reference on their bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars learning common tests in SAS.......2005-09-04

O'Rouke tackles a disconnect that arises naturally between statistics texts and SAS. The former talk in general terms about many important statistical tests, for univariate and multivariate distributions. From books like these, programmers at SAS built up massive libraries that implemented those tests.

Yet to someone outside SAS, who might be a student or professional statistician, knowing in general is often little help in being able to do specific tests in SAS. So O'Rouke wrote what you might think of as a standard text. Except that it is firmly grounded in showing how all this can be done in SAS. It is also suitable as a first text in those tests. In fact, maybe even better than standard texts. Because this book gives you the tools to familiarise yourself with easily running those tests against data sets. Typically, the other books leave you with two things to do. Write those tests (or get software from someone), and apply these against data.

2 out of 5 stars NOT good for learning/understanding statistics.......2002-08-05

The book was targetted to social scientists. The reviewer is from physical sciences. Thus this review may be biased.
Either the authors tried not to confuse novices in statistics with too much theory/math, or they assumed the readers are fluent with statistics but are tyros in SAS. The book included as little formula and derivations as possible. I find it is hard to understand what is really going on and why the procedures do things in those ways. It reminds me certain cook books. If you are desperately 'hungry', this might be a good one for you. However, if you want to be a chef, look somewhere else.
I am not sure how social scientists will feel about this book. As a statistician, I think this is definitely NOT a book for those who are comfortable with mathematical derivations, i.e. most mathematicians, statisticians and physicists.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite statistical reference books.......2000-06-04

You do not need to be a social scientist nor use SAS to find this book helpful. I am not a social scientist, and often use other statistical software. Still, I use this guide more than any of my other statistical textbooks and reference books. The authors do an excellent job of explaining how to perform and interpret a variety of statistical tests. For SAS users, there are many example programs and instructions on how to write and interpret these. If you regularly use statistics in your schooling or career, this book is a must have!
