One of the few studies of how the elderly help others through formal and informal volunteerism. While a large number of studies focus on the help older people receive from relatives and friends, this work examines the many ways in which older people are involved in giving care to others. Written by a sociologist and based on a stratified sample of hundreds of individuals, this study assesses a number of dimensions of care giving. While much of this labor goes unnoticed, it is central to the building and maintenance of family and community ties, and reveals ways in which social life is organized around aging, gender, and marriage. Patterns of formal volunteerism and informal care are studied in relation to age, sex, marital status, and other important variables that affect this essential but underplayed aspect of American community life.

Book Description

During World War II, American women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers, and many of them relied on federally funded child care programs. At the end of the war, working mothers vigorously protested the termination of child care subsidies. In Citizen, Mother, Worker, Emilie Stoltzfus traces grassroots activism and national and local policy debates concerning public funding of children's day care in the two decades after the end of World War II.

Using events in Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and the state of California, Stoltzfus identifies a prevailing belief among postwar policymakers that women could best serve the nation as homemakers. Although federal funding was briefly extended after the end of the war, grassroots campaigns for subsidized day care in Cleveland and Washington met with only limited success. In California, however, mothers asserted their importance to the state's economy as "productive citizens" and won a permanent, state-funded child care program. In addition, by the 1960s, federal child care funding gained new life as an alternative to cash aid for poor single mothers.

These debates about the public's stake in what many viewed as a private matter help illuminate America's changing social, political, and fiscal priorities, as well as the meaning of female citizenship in the postwar period.

A different time.......2004-06-23

Stoltzfus studies the roughly twenty years after World War 2, and the social attitudes in the United States towards women, in that time. She found that picking the topic of whether a government (federal or state) should offer child care to women in the workforce was a good focal point. It let her study the women's efforts to get this maintained after the war years, when it was introduced as an emergency measure. Plus, the reactions of the lobbied politicians and bureaucrats were typical of the prevailing social attitudes towards working women.

It really has not been that many years ago. Yet the echoes from these pages makes it seem like another era. Probably it was. When any employer could fire a female employee soley because she got married, or pregnant, with any risk of opprobrium.

The book also goes into the intertwining of the child care issue with that of race. How, in this pre-civil rights time, many women who had to work were Negro. Which naturally made harder the lobbying of white legislators.

To compete in today's changing business world, corporations are being forced to find ways to adapt and find new ways to reach their customers. "Heroes After Hours" tells of several companies who are meeting this challenge.

"Heroes After Hours" is a wonderful book about corporations working to improve the lives of the greater community. Individuals in several large corporations took it upon themselves to design and implement community service projects, which their corporation later supported and endorsed. The projects and individuals featured were inspirational- the projects went beyond the normal and conventional volunteer projects. The projects are praise-worthy and truly inovative.

As the author demonstrates volunteerism and community service help more than just the recipent. Community service and volunteering improves everyones lives. Reading this book demonstrated that corporate America has the ability to adapt and help others in need.

Evidence that "Earth Angels" are among us in the workplace........1998-07-25

Most people who initiate a volunteer program would agree, it's not for the recognition. Hats off to these authors for bringing to light numerous examples of true "Hero's After Hours." I'm sure the individuals who are featured appreciate the well-deserved recognition.

This book is a wonderful blueprint for initiating a volunteer program. It provides fresh, timely ideas for those who are searching for a worthy cause to support. It offers examples of corporate commitments which can make the difference when presenting ideas to upper management.

Even if the reader isn't interested in starting a volunteer effort, this book will surely warm their heart and perhaps spur individuals to get involved somewhere - every single effort counts!

Within this book, the author makes the player aware of all the many faulty habits he/she may have acquired, then offers constructive suggestions for remedying each one.

It's easy to play a clarinet poorly. Plenty of people do just that. They learn how to play the clarinet in order to be in their high school bands, and they don't learn it all that well.

That's why there is a need for this book, which teaches the basics really well and explains how to avoid many of the more fundamental errors made by those who are learning to control this marvellous instrument.

Even if you are a young clarinetist, it isn't too early to read this book. And if you want to learn the fundamentals of how to play the clarinet, this is the place to start.

One more suggestion: don't stop with this book. Try some of the clarinet music the author suggests. And I'd also recommend Brymer's book "Clarinet," for some useful but more advanced material on clarinet acoustics.

Light print on all pages pages fades into almost unreadably light in a few pages. The print quality of this booklet detracts from the content of this book. If you want some good information about clarinets, but don't mind straining your eyes with an inferior quality publication, this would be for you.

An excellent introduction for the student of the clarinet.......1998-01-16

This book has been an indispensible aid in learning to play the clarinet. Not only does it answer a myriad questions I had as a beginner, but it gives detailed advice on infrequently documented procedures. For example, there are chapters on the mouthpiece, reed, clarinet, embouchure, relaxation, breathing and support, voicing the tone, tonguiing, fingers, tone quality, intonation, high-register playing, technique, resistance, rhythm, legato, and phrasing. I haven't found any other book that covers half of the subjects. Much less with the lucidity and detail of Mr. Stein. I highly recommend this book.

Dr. Pino is my professor right now and this book is almost like having a lesson with him. Besides the fact it's full of everything you would have ever wanted to know about the clarinet. Dr. Pino is in my opinion first hand with lessons and second hand with this book THE clarinet guru!!

I didn't learn too much from this book as I have been using Act! 2004 for a couple years now and have already stumbled across most of the features I need to know. It would be good book for a novice to buy. It is written well and has a user-friendly format.

If you, or many people in your organization, use ACT! day-to-day, for general contact management (but you're not trying to "split the atom" with it), than this book is a great, general purpose go-to book for quick, simple, straight-forward answers.

Easy to use, well-written, nice screen caps. There is, however, very little information in here about more advanced items (such as using the ACT! developer API/SDK).

Having purchased a copy of this book I was quickly able to undertand how the software could be made to work for me. My sales team all have a copy and this has lead to the team having an increase in sales and productivty by 25%. This book will help everyone do everything with Act.
