A rare and wonderful resource.......2002-06-20
Newlen's book is the kind of discovery that will make a job-seeker shout "Eureka!" It was written a few years ago but remains relevant today. I can't begin to describe how eye-opening it was for me. Ever wondered what others write on their resumes, what employers and interviewers are looking for? Newlen features this in the book, with actual examples of resumes that stand out and succeed. You begin to see the process from the standpoint of the employers and understand what they have in mind when selecting among a pool of candidates, the kind of thing that will give you that much of an edge.
Newlen also dives into the details of good writing, noting the basic qualities of composition that not only conform to standards but register with a reader at a psychological level, helping her or him to remember it better. There's information on how best to leverage your training and work experience to date, specialties, formatting-- it's all in here. This would be useful to someone even outside of the librarian field! You'll find this very helpful.

Essential hints with added bonuses of computer usage, cover letters and an extensive appendix of action verbs, makes this book a much needed business tool for everyone looking to have a resume worth sharing in today's marketplace

Book Description
Advance praise for Hotel California
"A British rock critic obsessed with America, Barney Hoskyns brings a genuine love as well as an outsider's keen eye to the rise and fall of the California scene in the sixties and seventies. This is a riveting story, sensitively told."
—Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone
"Comprehensive and lively, Hotel California offers a front-row seat on the wild ride—fueled by drugs, sex, and lots of cash—that took Southern California singer-songwriters from hot tubs and local bars to sold-out stadiums, private jets, and the bestselling album of all time."
—Alan Light, author of The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys
"One of our finest pop historians reappraises a neglected and often maligned milieu. Barney Hoskyns deftly evokes not just the decadence but the sense of discovery rooted in 1960s idealism and fostered by a gaggle of record industry mavericks who, for a brief period, managed to make art and business coexist."
—Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again
Customer Reviews:
A Thoroughly Enjoyable Summer Read.......2007-08-20
This is the definitive story of Laurel Canyon and the rise and fall of the singer-songwriters that defined an era. Fabulous backstage gossip, great interviews, and a long, revealing look at David Geffen and his role in shaping the sound and artistry of so many great musicians -- Joni, Laura, CSNY, Gene Clark, JT, you name it.
I enjoyed this book so much I didn't want it to end. It also turned me on to some forgotten songwriters and albums that got lost in the shuffle -- Judee Sill being one amazing example.
An essential read for music fans.
Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagle.......2007-08-04
No Pretender. Interesting insight into the genre of singer-songwriter and into the time period when music was becoming personal to a generation that would lay the groundwork music for future generations. Good background story on the artists and players, explaining with some detail the lyrics that still roll around in my head. Somewhat shallow story describing a shallow lifestyle that resulted in deep emotion. Too much repetition, would have been more interesting if more of the story was told with less dialogue. That said - it's worth the time, and the knowledge gain. Good to know who's behind Linda's "You're no good", and Joni's "Case of You" and why James went to "Mexico". Boomer fodder.
A good read.......2007-08-03
An enjoyable book with a lot of insight into the rock stars of the era.
Just in case the music wasn't a big enough reason to hate them..........2007-07-23
Did you know that the only time musicians ever wrote their own songs was from 1967 to 1976? That's what you'll learn from this book. Did you know that the kids of today just don't care about the world around them? According to the book the only evidence you need of this is that you don't hear a lot of chart-topping anti-Bush songs coming out of coffee houses. So remember kids, until you're a drug-damaged, self-righteous, hypocritical d-bag pushed to the stars by a sexually confused ruthless business man (the only people who have ever been capable of and succeeded in changing the world), you don't mean anything-just like their elders.
But to sum up this book: Stills and Young have a love-hate relationship, David Geffen is gay and pushed Jackson Browne because he had a crush on him, David Crosby is an easier-to-listen-to version of Sean Penn, The Eagles were a marketing scam and Joni Mitchell owns that parking lot.
PS-too many Zevon tags, not enough Zevon.
poorly written,inaccurate.......2007-06-10
don't bother to buy this very poorly written book that has distorted facts. The author is basically repeating various quotes from many sources repeatedly.Boring...His facts are wrong. For example he states that Graham Nash was a very compromising person. In fact he was not and this has been verified with his past history with the Hollies.
I am not a critical person but this book was a real disappointment to me...

Clear cut message.......2005-04-17
I am a Engineering Physics Student.I read the older version of this book from our Library. The book is clear cut with arguments and scientific facts and looks at how the media over-hypes in the western world while there have been considerable improvement in safety compared to few generations ago.I found the book exhilarating and packed with "sociological imagination".This is one of the few books which captures "sociological emotions of fear" which till now have been handled psychologically.
A fascinating and provocative sociological study.......2002-07-14
Now in a revised and updated edition that takes into account recent horrors such as the September 11 attacks, Culture Of Fear by Frank Furedi (Professor of Sociology, University of Kent, Cantebury, England) is a fascinating and provocative sociological study of the contemporary and increasing epidemic of fear in an age when people are statistically safer and live longer than ever before, even a mere century ago. Scare stories that turn people away from discoveries such as genetic research and genetically modified food are particularly worrisome to Professor Furedi, who exhorts a warning that the new media driven fears may well be over-hyped, leading the nation to collectively fear that the sky is falling, when the real danger lies is in the abandonment of scientific and technological advances in industry, medicine, and agricultural. Culture Of Fear is highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader, students, political activists, and governmental policy makers, as well as being a welcome addition to academic reading lists and reference collections.

Very Valuable Contribution.......2003-06-17
I am writing primarily to respond to the Chicago reviewer who found this book less valuable than Barry Glassner's book of the same title and the work of Philip Jenkins. Glassner probably writes better than Furedi, but he's not a better thinker. Glassner's book has received a lot of attention, and it probably deserves it, but it isn't all that profound a work. Furedi, on the other hand, even though he probably pushes his argument too far (i.e., dismisses as fear mongering some things that are probably not), is much richer in his analysis. Jenkins, I must say, I find a bit irritating - at least based on his book on terrorism. While he has obviously done his homework and knows a great deal about the subject, he really doesn't end up saying very much of use.
A Must For All Students.......2000-03-28
I was recommended the book by a lecturer at my university as a must read to attempt to gain an understanding of the socio-political climate of our times. The book does not disappoint: Furedi's work is rational, informative, well argued and progressive. It points the direction forward in these "post-modern" times where the victim is celebrated and humankind's achievements have been forgotten. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to see the truth about many factors in todays society.
Don't make the same mistake I made.......1999-08-26
I ordered this book by mistake, thinking it was the book of the same title by the sociologist Barry Glassner . I don't know who Frank Furedi is, but he sure isn't a writer (though to be fair, this book does come from an academic publisher). It's hard to critique Furedi's argument because his writing is so turgid. I suggest that people interested in fear and panics read instead the work of people like Philip Jenkins, whose work on moral panics is truly pathbreaking, or Glassner, who writes with great style and wit. I am familiar with this literature and did not read anything in Furedi's book that was original or provocative.
An interesting subject but a dreadfully boring book.......1999-07-09
Those with an interest in this subject may want to buy this book, which does provide some interesting observations. But the writing is too dry, the examples too weighted toward the UK, and the overall conclusions too predictable to appeal to anyone else.

Arcanum is great Acolyte is lacking.......1998-08-07
My summary says it all.Halls of the Arcanum stands as one of my all time favorite human books. They are so unique and it is written so well it is unbelievable, how it went out of print is beyond me. The compilation is worth it just for that. Acolyte is dry and not too good but hey its got hedge magic rules, which are fun for everybody, even Bastet. Well thats it i would give Arcanum 5+ stars and i can't tell you how good it is, just read it. Acolyte while not too great is not useless and is kinda worth the extra dough. Have fun.
