Don't bother with this one!.......2005-03-27
As a tool to aide in "de-militarizing" your résumé, pass this one right on by. It's a poorly disguised generic how to write a résumé book that offers a few good suggestions in general, but nothing specific to the military. Nothing is addressed about the unique mind-set and terminology that is so predominant in the military, nor does it address the need to translate military terminology and phraseology into non-military friendly wording.
If you're looking for information on how to transition your résumé into something head-hunters and potential employees would be interested in, keep looking. There are other books that actually understand what it is to be in the military as well as what civilian employers are looking for. I just wish I'd saved my money on this one.

Great intro to RIE.......2007-07-15
This book is a great introduction to the RIE philosophy. If you think treating your baby with respect, allowing him the space to explore and learning to read his cues are worthy parenting goals, this is the book for you. It is short and to the point. The writing is not as good as Your Self-Confident Baby: How to Encourage Your Child's Natural Abilities from the Very Startwhich was written my Magda Gerber (the founder of RIE) along with journalist Allison Johnson. That said, it is a great summery of the RIE concepts.

mixed feelings.......2007-06-30
This is a bizarre book in that some chapters made perfect sense and others completely missed the mark. For example, her ideas about cribs and diapers were very rigid and traditional in a bad way. She actually called the family bed a fad. That's one of the many places she totally lost me; that's ridiculous. Also, she assumes that parents will be diapering the baby for 3 years, not taking into account that most of the world does not diaper in the western way, but instead practices EC. Therefore her views on toilet training were very limited and underestimated the infant's capabilities. There's also a LOT of leaving the babies alone in this book, it was excessive. Other separate chapters, for example about taking your baby outside, or observing baby carefully were beautiful. I have never disagreed more and agreed more with ideas in the same book before. I think the ideas about letting child develop naturally at his/her own pace can be found better (without the bizarro stuff in between) in "You are your child's first teacher" which explains the good ideas in this book, such as avoiding battery operated toys and television for children and creating a peaceful environment.
Gerber.......2007-05-09
This Gerber book of instuctions helps the parents and teachers a lot. Refreshes what our Center policies are all about.
Our Secret Guide to successful child.......2006-09-16
My wife and I followed Magda's philosphy (RIE) for our daughter since she was 3 months old. Now that she's almost 3 years old, all we can say is this book made us better parents, and as a result, our daughter is a healthy, self-confident and social child that she is today. Even our 6 hour drive from LA to San Franciso, she required no DVDS nor annoying noise making toys to occupy herself -- instead she was happy to entertain herself by singing, looking at the scenaries, and asking questions about what she saw. Many parents tell us how perfect our daughter is -- and it's all because of this book. If you follow this book, you realize that good parenting doesn't mean providing passive entertainment for the child, but to provide environment where she can grow at her own pace and explore the world as it meant to be. This book changed our life for better, and made pareting easy for the first time parents like us.
Trust Yourself, Not Magda Gerber.......2006-06-17
This book has totally outraged me. Sure, the suggestions for talking to your baby as a person and explaining what you are going to do are great...but most of us do that anyway. Gerber's ideas (and the way she relates them) are scientifically unfounded. She claims that taking your baby for a walk is a "frenetic" way of parenting, and completely misses the point of safe and healthy "babywearing". Her ideas about giving infants "space" simply don't match up with infant development, and the examples she cites in the book are almost cultish comments by parents describing how they ignore their own instincts and recount what "Magda says" and how they "trust Magda". If you want a book that gives hard evidence and cites sources try "Our Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent."

Book Description
The expression laissez les bons temps rouler—"let the good times roll"—conveys the sense of exuberance and good times associated with southern Louisiana’s vibrant cultural milieu. Yet, for Cajuns, descendants of French settlers exiled from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the mid-eighteenth century, this sense of celebration has always been mixed with sorrow. By focusing on Cajun music and dance and the ways they convey the dual experiences of joy and pain, Disenchanting Les Bons Temps illuminates the complexities of Cajun culture. Charles J. Stivale shows how vexed issues of cultural identity and authenticity are negotiated through the rich expressions of emotion, sensation, sound, and movement in Cajun music and dance.
Stivale combines his personal knowledge and love of Cajun music and dance with the theoretical insights of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to consider representations of things Cajun. He examines the themes expressed within the lyrics of the Cajun musical repertoire and reflects on the ways Cajun cultural practices are portrayed in different genres including feature films, documentaries, and instructional dance videos. He analyzes the dynamic exchanges between musicians, dancers, and spectators at such venues as bars and music festivals. He also considers a number of thorny socio-political issues underlying Cajun culture, including racial tensions and linguistic isolation. At the same time, he describes various efforts by contemporary musicians and their fans to transcend the limitations of cultural stereotypes and social exclusion.
Disenchanting Les Bons Temps will appeal to those interested in Cajun culture, issues of race and ethnicity, music and dance, and the intersection of French and Francophone studies with Anglo and American cultural studies.

Book Description
In this engaging memoir, Robert Rand tells the tale of how through dancing he helped free himself from the grip of panic disorder. Rand was a serious, shy, and intense scholar who had achieved national recognition in a career in writing and radio production. In the midst of his success, panic attacks overwhelmed him. For more than two years, he suffered their debilitating effects; the disease flattened his spirits and stripped him of self-confidence. Then he discovered social dancing, and in particular Cajun and zydeco dance and music. Dancing became a cathartic and liberating endeavor, helping him beat back his panic disorder to discover a world of passion and romance and to gain control of his life.
Customer Reviews:
Far More than it seems.......2005-08-04
This would be a fascinating book for someone interested in overcoming panic disorder. But it is actually so much more. If that phrase were not in the title, it would more accurately reflect the book -- a wonderful entertaining and engaging story about one man's life.
I quickly found myself very interested in this author; being drawn in to care about what was happening to him and how he was dealing with it. It's all about how he dealt with his panic disorder, but the telling is far more entertaining than it sounds. He leaves nothing out either -- the funny stuff, the heart breaks, the embarrassment, the girls and the sex. Often, I couldn't put the book down until I had finished a chapter.
Rand's descriptive writing is awesome -- rich and flavorful and entertaining. It shows that even a calm, studious, serious fellow can have a very lively and engaging life.
In addition, I found his dealing with the racial issues very frank and refreshing. (By way of explanation, Rand took up Zydeco dancing, which is from the Black Cajun culture of Louisiana and he spent considerable time there in the backcountry.)
Overall, it was an excellent read. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Well written but all over the map as far as subject matter.......2007-06-23
I found this Schaum's outline to be a very well written book on a variety of elementary mathematical subjects probably most suitable for someone who has just graduated high school and is a freshman starting some kind of technical degree. However, beyond that, I am not sure exactly who the target audience is supposed to be. The book contains some information on the very basic computer math that a college freshman engineering or IT student would need to know such as binary number systems and computer codes and math. However, some of the other material is very much oriented towards the aspiring computer engineer but is not really mathematical such as the sections on logic, flowcharts, sets and relations, and logic gates. Other sections are mathematical but don't necessarily have anything to do with computers and could be just as helpful to a student of applied mathematics such as the sections on linear algebra, linear equations, statistics, and graph theory.
Thus my recommendation would be that if you need a good tutorial on a variety of mathematical and pseudo-mathematical topics that tie in well with a technical degree of any kind, the low price of admission on this odd little outline is probably worth it. Just don't expect it to rescue you in any one course in particular. It will more likely rescue you in particular sections of several courses instead.
Great book which helped me tremendously.......2005-06-20
This book tremendously helped me understand computers and their relationship to mathematics and helped clear about doubts all through the semesters in college that I studied computer science. I strongly recommend this book to anyone majoring in computer science, information technologies, computer programming, etc ... as this book serves as a pillar to understanding the fundamentals of computer hardware and software.
A cheap and good book.......2000-01-22
The book is pretty much suitable for students who has finished high school maths but requires revision on maths for computing. A few chapters are simple enough for students to run over quickly. There is a supplementary questions and solved questions with working for student to understand and practice on. Overall the book is good enough to refresh your memory on computer maths.
very poorly structured.......1999-12-23
For a start this book is never intended to be used by itself but as a supplement,so any attempt to use it as a textbook will only reslut in frustartion. Furthermore its not geared to teach as many VERY important concepts are simply ommited and the author makes far too many assumptions which all results in an incomplete book. The book attempts to cut study time but also ends up cutting too much in clear and sufficent explanations. Use this book once you have completly mastered whathever topic you are involved in,and even then its only good for the practise problems at the end of each chapter. All in all DONT buy this book if you are trying to learn something...use it ONLY for reviwing and just as a supplement.
