Instruction Not Focused on Performance Arts.......2007-04-29
I found this book confusing and the title deceiving...the first part is very basic "resumes 101" type content (e.g. difference between a chronological and functional resume, action verbs to use, etc.). The book also uses examples like "Regional Sales Manager" and "corporate litigation" within the content as examples. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use examples utlizing actors, acting, vocal performance, i.e. performance art examples? There is NOTHING in this content about how performance arts resumes are different from traditional resumes or how to develop performance art resumes. This standard content ends at page 37 and then from page 37 to 119 there are performance arts sample resumes and cover letters. It's like they took a resume writing brochure, added a bunch of performance art resumes to the end and published it - which in fact is exactly what they did.

Customer Reviews:
great starter book!!.......2006-08-13
I bought this book because my little brother decided that he wanted to enter this crazy industry and become an actor. I bought it because it never hurts to have a guide to look back at, plus, maybe there was some info in regards to kids that I already did not know. This is a great book. That only reason I gave it a four is because I did not really learn something new, but then again, I plan on working in the entertainment industry once I graduate so I already know alot in regards to breaking into it. But it is a great book. Also, it's an easy ready. Seriously, I read it in less than 45 minutes (and that's with me watching tv at the same time).
A Must For Parents And Kids Alike.......2003-04-22
I Have been in show buisness for over 20 years, and my greatest fear has always been parents [paying too muchy for] acting teachers, photograghers and agents. This book will prevent that from happening. And save you many hours of frustration and regret. If your starting out, and even if you've been at it a while, this book is a MUST. Simple and straight forward.
Right on the MONEY!.......2003-04-12
As the mother of a young performer and a producer and performer myself, I am familiar with all the pitfalls, perils and pluses of having a child in "the biz". Lucia has accurately addressed the most important issues and then some. This is a MUST READ for anyone contemplating getting their child started in the business. Run, do not walk and buy this book. This book is easy to understand and covers all the major topics needed to make good decisions. Thank you Lucia it is about time someone wrote this book!!
Acting Up: How to Get Your Kid in the Biz.......2003-04-05
This is a great resource for parents whose kids are eager to tap into their talents. In detailed and nicely organized chapters, it covers everything from how to deal with your child's aspirations and dreams in the business world to how to find and deal with representation. It's comprehensive, easy to follow and most importantly, stresses the "fun" factor for kids. Stage moms beware! This is a MUST READ for every parent with a future star in the family or a very expressive child.
Great How To!.......2003-03-07
This great "how to" book provides the information you need to get your children into show business. Clear, succinct information....and forms to walk you through your own experience.

Some helpful but mostly outdated info.......1998-09-07
There are only a few books on the subject of an actor's resume, unfortunatly this one contains dated information and pictures of actors that are not the type in use any longer. I would suggest saving a few bucks and getting the other book (at amazon.com) that focuses on an actor's resume.

It is not just about your resume -.......2004-02-18
This book is wonderful. Devin tells us how to write and produce a well crafted resume - sure, but he goes on to tell us how to market ourselves. If you're sending out a resume, attached to the back of your headshot, without reading and taking Devin's well researched advice ... you may be making some big mistakes. This book is well worth the cover price.
It helped ... a lot!.......1998-09-07
I didn't know what to do about my acting resume until a friend gave me this book. It really helped. When I got to Los Angeles I had a picture and resume all ready to go and the first audition I went on the casting director said, "good professional resume," and I didn't really have many credits. It just made me feel better to have read this book and formated my resume the right way!
Actors: If you haven't read this book, your resume is wrong!.......1997-03-14
For once a book that can truly be called invaluable. A complete, comprehensive and entertaining guide to writing a
resume the way the industry wants it. The only book on the subject, painstakingly researched and accurate. A must for novices and seasoned actors. Thank you Richard Devin for finally telling actors how to write their resumes
It was a great help!.......1997-01-28
It really helped me. I was teaching a class to actors preparing to move to New York and LA, I don't know what I would have done without this book. When some of the actors started asking me what to do about a resume, I was stuck. I didn't know. Actors' Resumes really helped. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of becoming an actor

reason tutorial.......2007-01-05
I have found this book to be a great supplement to my learning of reason
Great!!.......2006-08-19
A great book it really helps you on the way to understand reason even if you don't have any experience with it at all.
Great Book - Easy to Read and Follow.......2005-11-01
I'm new to reason and I found this book to be simply terrific. I took a look at some other books that simply couldn't compare. This book provides great examplex of how the tools work and where to find them.
The images show close up views of the knobs and dispays so that you know exactly where to click.
Before reading the book I wasn't clear on many of the concepts, this book made things simple to understand.
This is a must have for any new Reason user.
bad book.......2005-10-09
I was very disapointed. The Reason manuel is 10 times better.
I went back reading Reason 2.5 power by Michael Prager.Gonna buy his version of 3.0.Should have done it in the first place.
Save Your Money.......2005-10-01
This might be of some to someone who could not print out the manual that ships with Reason. Otherwise, it simply is a lazy rewording of the manual - a functional description of the components.
Whereas the manual might say, "such-and-such a knob does so-and-so" this book says "such-and-such a knob does so-and-so, turn the knob and play a note, see what happens." Well duh.
Part of what makes it come to over 300 pages is its wide margins printed over with a gratuitous graphic of a level indicator. Reminds me of a kid's book report they try to fluff out to make extra pages.
You'd do much better to play around with the turorials that ship with Reason, and visit Propellerhead's website for some real tips, tricks and insights into stuff not covered in this quick and dirty little pamphlet.
Book Description
Blending cultural, religious, and media history, Tona Hangen offers a richly detailed glimpse into the world of religious radio. She uses recordings, sermons, fan mail, and other sources to tell the stories of the determined broadcasters and devoted listeners who, together, transformed American radio evangelism from an on-air novelty in the 1920s into a profitable and wide-reaching industry by the 1950s.
Hangen traces the careers of three of the most successful Protestant radio evangelists--Paul Rader, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Charles Fuller--and examines the strategies they used to bring their messages to listeners across the nation. Initially shut out of network radio and free airtime, both of which were available only to mainstream Protestant and Catholic groups, evangelical broadcasters gained access to the airwaves with paid-time programming. By the mid-twentieth century millions of Americans regularly tuned into evangelical programming, making it one of the medium's most distinctive and durable genres. The voluntary contributions of these listeners helped bankroll religious radio's remarkable growth.
Revealing the entwined development of evangelical religion and modern mass media, Hangen demonstrates that the history of one is incomplete without the history of the other; both are essential to understanding American culture in the twentieth century.

Software design patterns let developers reuse tried-and-true designs in new projects. For the state of the art in object design, consider Patterns in Java, perhaps the best book that Java developers have at their disposal for getting leading-edge pattern expertise in a convenient and well-organized volume.
The guide opens with background on pattern research, including the groundbreaking Design Patterns. This new title goes further, with 41 software patterns, all illustrated with UML diagrams and sample Java code. Early patterns, such as Delegation and Proxy, show how classes can work together without relying on inheritance. Next come creational patterns, such as the Factory and Builder patterns and the newer Object Pool pattern (which can be used to pool database connections for faster performance).
Subsequent sections move on to partitioning patterns, such as the Layered Initialization, as well as structural patterns, such as the Adapter, Facade, and Flyweight patterns. A section on behavioral patterns mixes older patterns such as the Chain of Responsibility and the Strategy with newer designs such as the Little Language and Snapshot patterns. The book closes with seven newer patterns for designing distributed and multitasked systems. --Richard Dragan
Book Description
"This is the best book on patterns since the Gang of Four's Design Patterns. The book manages to be a resource for three of the most important trends in professional programming: Patterns, Java, and UML."
—Larry O'Brien, Founding Editor, Software Development Magazine
Since the release of Design Patterns in 1994, patterns have become one of the most important new technologies contributing to software design and development. In this volume Mark Grand presents 41 design patterns that help you create more elegant and reusable designs. He revisits the 23 "Gang of Four" design patterns from the perspective of a Java programmer and introduces many new patterns specifically for Java. Each pattern comes with the complete Java source code and is diagrammed using UML.
Patterns in Java, Volume 1 gives you:
- 11 Behavioral Patterns, 9 Structural Patterns, 7 Concurrency Patterns, 6 Creational Patterns, 5 Fundamental Design Patterns, and 3 Partitioning Patterns
- Real-world case studies that illustrate when and how to use the patterns
- Introduction to UML with examples that demonstrate how to express patterns using UML
The CD-ROM contains:
- Java source code for the 41 design patterns
- Trial versions of Together/J Whiteboard Edition from Object International (www.togetherj.com); Rational Rose 98 from Rational Software (www.rational.com); System Architect from Popkin Software (www.popkin.com); and OptimizeIt from Intuitive Systems, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
good parts.......2007-07-17
Bought this book for my nephew. His comment was "there are a lot of good parts, but you have to search for them."
The 2nd edition is not that bad.......2006-08-26
I haven't seen the first edition of this book.
The examples are rather good and the diagrams are in UML. Compare it to diagrams in [GOF95] which are written in some wierd ancient notation.
Although the exampled are in Java this book is good for C++ devs. This books is the fastest way to understand design patterns.
For learning design patterns..........2005-07-29
This book covers roughly the same territory as the GOF (Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides) book, only with simpler examples, in Java.
I found it easier to read than GOF; it gave me with a better overall understanding of the topic in general, and of specific design patterns. Grand's book may be slightly less valuable as a reference, however, when you need to actually use one of the patterns.
May be helpful.......2004-06-22
The help this offers is for students who haven't learned a lot of languages yet. For them, the effort of picking Java sense out of C++ or Smalltalk may defeat the rest of the pattern discussion. For them, Java code samples and references to familiar Java library elements can make all the difference.
For the rest of us, this book has decidedly mixed value. The real problem is that Grand seems to equate the terms "desgin pattern" and "good idea". Design patterns are good ideas, at least in the right context, but not all good ideas are design patterns.
For example, delegation of responsibility is a good idea. It's the basis of any system decomposition. I have trouble justifying that as a design pattern - you may as well say that passing function parameters is a design pattern. It's just too broad. At the other end of the spectrum, Grand points to "marker" interfaces, Java interfaces with identities but not content, as a design pattern. Again, this is a useful but language-dependent hack. Ada or C# would have done the same things with attributes, and C++ could have done the same using marker fields or values in the class. Language tricks aren't patterns.
Still, many of Grand's patterns are good ideas. The "Object Pool", for example, is a common and useful pattern. It's closely related to two GoF patterns. It's like a Singleton, except there's more than one of them. It's like a Flyweight, except the units aren't distinguishable or shareable.
One real annoyance is the tendency of this Volume I to refer to necessary information in Volume II. If the author is going to create independently saleable units of book, they should be independently readable. I do not appreciate the implicit plug for the author's other work.
I use this book, but mostly for its bad examples. Think hard about whether this is the way to spend your budget for DP books.
Beware - Spammer on Board.......2003-10-17
About every month or so I get spammed by this author touting his great seminars so I thought I'd give his book a shot. I guess you could say that he finally wore me down. Luckily I actually purchased the book used for $2 and still think I was royally ripped off.
The book begins poorly and gets worse. Specifically, the author definitely has a pension for patronizing his audience. He speaks as though he invented Patterns and is delivering them to the masses after bringing them down from the mountains inscribed on clay tablets.
Now, I'm not a guy to worry too much about a few typos here and there. After all, mistakes are made in code and text alike. However, the author's examples are not at all practical to the point of being useless and far too many of them flat out don't work!!
I'm not so much upset about the measly two bucks as I am about the several hours lost trying to decipher what the author meant and working through the typos. Anyway, hopefully this review will save someone else the time I lost.
