It shows a list of job-related newsgroups, and a job-related mailing list on the web. There is a 27 page list of companies that accept resumes at their Internet sites plus a four page list of Internet job banks and databases. There are 70 pages of career-related Internet site addresses. In fact this book is packed with a vast amount of Internet links making it the best book for anyone seeking information about resumes and job hunting in cyberspace.

5 out of 5 stars Online Resumes Require Serious Offline Preparation!.......1998-06-13

There are a number of books on the market today that will help people write the "perfect" resume. There are fewer books on the market that will help you design resumes specifically for posting online. This is one of them. Pat Criscito offers a considerable amount of instruction on how to design resumes that can be easily posted and properly viewed online. There is more to preparing a resume for online use than may be apparent at first. This book leads the way!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and timely--a wonderful find!.......1999-10-13

Hopkins asks some of the most important questions that we, as a culture, are currently facing. The social and ethical issues related to technology and gender need our attention, and this collection is the only book on this topic I have been able to find. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The best single source concerning gender and technology..........1999-10-03

Sex/Machine is by far the best single source concerning gender and technology. This book collects the most stimulating and important essays in this area, and unlike many edited volumes, contains an introductory essay which is by itself worth the price of the book because of the insights it brings to these issues. Elegantly crossing multiple academic disciplines--from philosophy of technology, to medical ethics, to womens studies, gender theory and cultural studies, to law (among others), Patrick Hopkins has assembled a collection of the most provocative writing concerning the interactions between technologies and genders. The essays in this edited volume explore the history of technologies and gender, and how technology can shore up traditional and problematic gender roles (e.g., pectoral implants to make men appear more "macho", and technologies that make it possible for parents to know, and potentially select, the sex of their children before they are born). More interesting to me, though, are the selections that explore ways technologies undermine traditional ideas of gender. The sections I found most thought-provoking were the essays in Part IV on the issues (among others) concerning transsexuals and medical technology, in Part V on computers and cyberspace/cybersex, and in Part IV on cyborgs--bodies such as that of the Borg on Star Trek that are such interminglings of so-called "hardware" (machine) and "wetware" (biology) that gender no longer has any meaning. I'm going to use this book in a course in gay and lesbian history and philosophy, but I could see it being used in courses in medical ethics, philosophy of technology, womens studies, and gender and cultural studies. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that it is extremely readable--in addition to classrooms, it will make great reading for a book club, or for anyone interested in sex, gender, and technology.

    1 out of 5 stars What a Disgrace.......2003-01-13

This book is absolutely terrible. Maybe a couple of funny stories but overall it is an incredible waste and a torture to read.

1 out of 5 stars This is perhaps the WORST book I have ever suffered through........2002-08-17

The only reason I give this book one star is that Amazon won't let me give it a zero or negative rating. I hope it was printed on recycled paper, because it would be a crime against the universe to have cut down a tree for this bumfodder.
Most of the stories don't even have a humorous element as they are little more than celebrity name-dropping, and even the potentially funny stories are killed by Long's lack of talent and his trying to make himself the center of attention.
If this book is an example of Long's comedy, his live "performances" must violate the Geneva Convention.

2 out of 5 stars Belly Laughs isn't exactly what I'd call it.......2001-06-16

I'm disappointed in this book, I picked it up at a belly dance workshop, and figured it would be full of laughs. It's not exactly a book of funny stories, some of them are just plain weird, not funny, or didn't have anything to do with belly dancing.

One of the things that disappointed me most about the book is the story telling style. Long states at the beginning that he's not trying to embellish the stories or take them over, but we constantly get little bits of Long-ese (definitions of words he uses), and somehow I don't think all these belly dancers used Long-ese a lot. It's like he's constantly trying to remind us who's writing the book. He also crams the table of contents onto two pages in small type, but has no problems putting a definition of Long-ese on the page in large type, and then devoting the entire next page to a definition of 'buckwheat.'

A lot of the stories weren't funny, or didn't have a whole lot to do with belly dancing. The last story of the book is a narrative about one belly dancer's obsession with The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. There isn't any mention of belly dance in it, other than the person who was obsessed with him saw his wife dancing. Another one deals with one belly dancer's husband accidentally eating 'funny' brownies and then driving 10 miles an hour down the road.

The book isn't a total waste though, there are a few funny and interesting stories, one about a python that farted feathers, another about how a belly dancing cousin warmed up a somber wedding, and another about a mishap a dancer had when she danced with Omar Sharif. Other than that, there's not a whole lot of really good stories. If you're really interested in sorting through the bad to find the good, then order the book. If not, try to pick one up used or see if the library has a copy.

5 out of 5 stars star gazing with Rod.......2001-02-05

Well, first of all I've caught Rod Long's stand up act and heard him many times on the local sports radio station,so i was familar with his style of humor! Well honey, his wrting dosen't disappoint it's just as funny as his live act........I loved the star gazing aspect.what it's actually like behind the scenes.I loved The Prince saga as well as all the Jodette stories.I've actually been to see some real belly dancers since buying this book!Great for the mind and soul.Right on Rod Long

2 out of 5 stars Not enough laughs.......2000-09-08

I waited from this book to find funny stories about dancers from all over the world but there were just few stories that really were funny. Book was filled with stories by Jodette and Dallal, of which the first was really boring: maybe it was fun to live that life but for sure it was not fun to read... and what has the last story about Prince fan do in this book? There could have been so much more to read if the author was more concentrating to really fun and interesting stories instead of dropping famous names.

Marvelous book for a young opera singer. Joan Dornemann is a known teacher in the world of opera and her advices very important. It's a must for a young singer.

5 out of 5 stars Like that all-important, supportive auntie that quietly reminds you that you already know most of this..........2006-11-12

This may not be a book that will hand you that perfect opera role on a silver platter, it does give quite a bit of insight on things all of us auditioning people should know. I personally did not feel that there were any "Eureka!" moments for me in this book, but it quietly reinforced much that I already knew and had buried somewhere in my mind. Joan is like a supportive auntie... reminds you that you already know what to do, how to put it altogether at once, and reminds us of a few commom-sense things that we should know, but don't always remember in the process of nerve-wracking auditions. I truly enjoyed reading this, and is made me feel better about the entire process of auditioning. It will be a book that I re-read often. Thank you Joan for a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy being taken by the hand by a magician-teacher........1999-08-10

I was brought into enjoying Opera by the public master classes by Ms. Dornemann. Those are experiences in colective levitation, when you feel one with a group of public, singers, teachers and composers.

The allways positive messages that she delivers (doesn't matter how they are expressed)read: "I am correcting you because you are terrific!"

The book brings lots of the experience, insight, common sense, kindness and warmth that makes her more than a great teacher: a true magician.

If you have been to one of her master classes, you will love the book, and if you read the book you will buy or borrow or steal a ticket for her master classes

5 out of 5 stars excellent primer for opera singers.......1999-08-02

This book, written by two masters of the opera world, give the student or young professional everything they need to know about making it in the opera world, and that the secret is making tough rules for yourself and aiming for perfection. When I finished, I felt like I had just taken a master class.

4 out of 5 stars Kind, realistic view of expected behaviour and preparation........1998-05-15

In this book Joan Dornemann gives us a basic introduction to operatic auditions from preparation, to aria choices, to behaviour at the audition. She includes little tidbits of her vast experience as a coach for interest. Her approach is kind, but realistic. Therefore, you may be empowered and exhilarated in one moment and completely depressed the next. In the end it made me wish that the purchase of the book came with a private coaching session with Ms. Dornemann. I look forward to a more complete record of Joan Dornemann's knowledge of the operatic repertoire, the pitfalls etc. She has only whetted my appetite.

    Book Description

The proliferation of book clubs, reading groups, "outline" volumes, and new forms of book reviewing in the first half of the twentieth century influenced the tastes and pastimes of millions of Americans. Joan Rubin here provides the first comprehensive analysis of this phenomenon, the rise of American middlebrow culture, and the values encompassed by it.

Rubin centers her discussion on five important expressions of the middlebrow: the founding of the Book-of-the-Month Club; the beginnings of "great books" programs; the creation of the New York Herald Tribune's book-review section; the popularity of such works as Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy; and the emergence of literary radio programs. She also investigates the lives and expectations of the individuals who shaped these middlebrow institutions—such figures as Stuart Pratt Sherman, Irita Van Doren, Henry Seidel Canby, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, John Erskine, William Lyon Phelps, Alexander Woollcott, and Clifton Fadiman.

Moreover, as she pursues the significance of these cultural intermediaries who connected elites and the masses by interpreting ideas to the public, Rubin forces a reconsideration of the boundary between high culture and popular sensibility.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book and great ideas.......2005-03-25

I found the book well written and the ideas presented in a logical way. The middle brow culture of the early 20th century clearly has parallels today. Plus, the dumbing down of American culture these days (anyone for American Idol?) shows how these middle brow folks would be considered almost high brow today.

1 out of 5 stars This book is boring beyond all hell.......1998-10-21

The author attempts to write in language that confuses the reader to hide the fact that the point she it trying to make is obvious and not worthy of sooooo many pages.

    Book Description

Sicilian Kalashnikov contains coverage of all the latest theory, and is an ideal new weapon for club and tournament players, written by prominent opening experts.

The Kalashnikov is one of the most modern variations of the Sicilian Defence. As early as move four, Black stakes a claim in the center and sets the tone for the rest of the game. Play can often become sharp and as is normal with many Sicilian lines, the best prepared player is usually the successful one. In this handy battle manual Jacob Aagaard and Jan Pinski take a deep look at all the critical ideas and variations of an opening which has received little coverage in chess publishing until now.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Finally some coverage on this Very important variation.......2007-06-29

It is somewhat alarming that a major opening variation such as the kalashnikov (also known as the neo-sveshnikov) has such precious little coverage in the english language. In fact, there has been such little published for this opening that for years I avoided the opening altogether in favor of the caro-kann, which of course has received much more attention and book coverage. Since I purchased this book a few years ago, I made the switch permanently and have since had no regrets. For those looking for a TRULY sound opening without the heavy burden of deep theory (a combination that really is rare anymore in modern chess) look no further. Aagard and Pinski finally furnish us with a new book here to get new players started while also covering in detail the important topical and critical variations at the highest level of play, for those players for whom such information is relevant.

I like how the authors write and analyse the book with a more or less unbiased perspective. Most writers for books such as these have an agenda, namely promoting the opening (and through association the book that they have written) and this cannot help but make its impact felt on the quality of the analysis. Sometimes this can feel so absurd (in the case of authors writing on really dubious openings) that we can't help but feel sorry for new and inexperienced players who take the author at face value and never realize that in reality their choice of opening is inferior. But this can happen at higher levels too, when good players analyzing good openings over-rate and overestimate key lines simply because they themselves are attached to them. Pinski and Aagard books generally don't suffer from this problem, and although this book is explicitly written for the black player, thankfully they judge lines from a neutral perspective, and are unashamed to leave the status of some critical lines up in the air, based on the most recent performances.

The beginner will find the introduction to part one the most helpful portion of the book. While brief, it explains all of the important ideas and themes of the opening. The bulk of the coverage is devoted to the main line (black plays 8...Be6) after 6.c4 with a chapter devoted to four of the main resposes by white (Nd5 and Bd3 share the last mainline chapter). This last chapter is somewhat disappointing as it consists more of illustrative games than analysis, but that may be due more to the fact that these lines really haven't been explored at the top levels very much (my recent Informators lend credence to this theory). Black players will be pleased to know, however, that these lines are not the most critical and demonstrate that black has plenty of options and resources to avail him/herself with, making achieving equal and winning chances rather easy.

Part 4 is personally the most interesting, which analyzes 8...f5, the most important alternative to the 8...Be6 lines. Again, this portion is brief, but coverage and analysis spills into the illustrative games at the end of the chapter, somewhat inconvenient but there anyway. Actually, the reader will find the analysis spill into the illustrative games (located at the end of each chapter) in every part, so i guess be forwarned, you'll be flipping back and forth.

Parts 5-7 deal with various important alternatives at move 7 for white (again after the main-line 6.c4 Be7).

Chapters 8-10 are disappointing. The author recommends after 6. N1C3 to transpose into Sveshnikov lines with 8...Nf6. If this solution pleases you, then I would recommend buying the Aagaard book on the Sveshnikov, but for me, it's just a little too much theory heavy for my tastes. Options to avoid the sveshnikov and stay in true Kalashnikov territory are given a somewhat cursory, half-hearted inspection. In my opinion, the authors rightly conclude that responses by black after 7...b5 are problematic when the next move 8...Nf6 are avoided. However, I find that if 7...b5 isn't played, but rather 7...Be7 Black can get a very good game without transposing into the Sveshnikov. Other good players like the British Grandmaster Conquest seem to share my conviction, and several IM blogs I have read have even mentioned that they anticipate this line becoming important to theory in the future. However, this line is only given a glance and at a rude two pages it is by far the briefest chapter of the entire book.

There are 14 chapters in total.

This book would have only received three stars at best by this point, but a few additional features bump it up a bit. A nice concluding chapter at the end of the book is devoted to very early White deviations, those that all Sicilian players really dislike, the Closed sicilian options to avoid an open game. The analysis is very good here, and give you not only all you really need to be prepared for, but (especially in the 3...e5 lines) assist you in incorporating Kalashnikov ideas into Closed Sicilian games.

Unfortunately, the only white deviation not dealt with here are the early Bc4-Bb5 moves. The authors also give us some "problems" to solve at the end of the book, most of which are thematic tactical combinations to the opening. Very helpful.

Since amazingly you have no other real options (the macdonald book is out of print and somewhat dated on theory)if you want to play this opening it's pretty much this book or nothing. One other option you have is to look into IM Jeremy Silman's book the "neo-sveshnikov". I haven't read it, and it's somewhat hard to find. I'm not quite sure I trust his opening books, but anyway look into it, esp. if you are disatisfied with this one.

    3 1/2 to 4 stars.

Oh, and sorry for the boring prose.

    Book Description

Mike McShaffry's first edition of Game Coding complete rapidly became one of the top-selling game programming books and was widely praised by readers around the world. The best description of the first edition comes from two Amazon reviewers; the first proclaiming, "I got the same feeling of enlightenment when reading this one as I did all those years ago when I read the classic book "Code Complete" and the second stating "This is the first game book I have read that I was sorry when I got to the end because there wasn't any more." For Game Coding Complete, Second Edition, McShaffry returns with many more of his highly popular, shoot-from the hips war stories and expert game programming insight that only a real insider could provide. McShaffry uses his experience as a leading programmer for Origin Systems, Microsoft, and Ion Storm a division of Eidos, to illustrate real-world techniques and solutions, including examples from his recent work on the major game, Thief Deadly Shadows. Game Coding Complete, Second Edition takes programmers through the complete process of developing a professional quality game using hundreds of insider tricks and techniques developed and perfect by the author from over a decade of game development experience. It covers a range of topics that will appeal to the most discriminating programmers such as key "gotcha" issues that could trip up even veteran programmers. The new edition features expanded coverage of 3D programming, several new chapters on game interface design, game audio, game scripting, game engine technology, code optimization, production and scheduling, plus it now includes a CD-ROM packed with valuable source code and game development tools. The appendix offers solid advice on starting your own game company. The C++ language is used to explain specific programming concepts with added discussion of development with C# and Managed DirectX programming.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-02

although i did not read all the book thorougly, from the topics covered in the book. i can say that it is a very good book and a good reference for almost all your requirements

5 out of 5 stars Great insights from a game development veteran.......2006-08-07

Game Coding Complete will teach you how to be a professional game programmer. It assumes that you already know how to program in C++. The tone of the book is conversational, and the author does an excellent job of explaining complex ideas.

This book is filled with practical knowledge hard-won from years of experience. I prefer getting advice from someone who has shipped games, someone with a MobyGames entry. Mike McShaffry qualifies on both counts.

Chapter 18, Debugging Your Game, is a gem. It contains many practical tips that could only have been learned by someone who has worked "in the trenches" on numerous shipped games. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

At first, some of the topics included in the book may seem random or unrelated, but by the end of the book you realize that every topic covered is relevant to being an effective game developer.

I know of no better introduction to all the topics that are important to a professional game developer. I use this book in the UW Game Development Certificate class that I teach.

5 out of 5 stars Not the same as Code Complete, but different.......2006-03-21

This is one of those books that you need to be able to read some of it first to understand it's value. I've read some unflattering reviews that said the book was entirely inadequate for an experienced developer and they are right. This is not a Code Complete that encapsulates an entire discipline's wisdom. This is a book that talks about the rest of game programming, all the other stuff unrelated to what most DX/OGL/most graphics "games" programming books talk about. Here's a tidbit, why would a physics system be related to the refresh rate of your display?

Another example, using a debugger and interpreting things by a combination of memory addreses, and assembly is pretty arcane fare these days compared to the early days when most programmers needed to do this to micromanage their allocs and stack calls. Neverthenelss this knowledge is invaluable, and even Mike himself mentions he coded for 4 years before running across a debugger (and I don't mean the common step through, step into stuff). There are all kinds of weird but essential (and interesting) wisdom here that cover issues that you can only really run into on a commercial product.

This is essentially game dev mentor in a book. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Serious technical info and process for game coders.......2004-11-09

I'm old enough to remember awful books with titles like "Graphics Tips from Game Gurus". From the cover I was worried that this was that type of book. But there is wisdom in the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover". This is a very serious book about both the technical aspects of the job, and the serious non-technical process aspects of the job. As the author says in the first chapter "game programming is freaking hard."

There are well written sections on 2D and 3D programming, including an excellent section on basic trigonometry. There is also some good timely material on working within the Windows framework. I would have liked some more material on 3D engines, but that's a minor flaw.

There are two very solid chapters on process and testing. And a very good chapter on techniques that you can use to survive the death march.

Game programming sounds fun and sexy but it's a very tough gig where the odds are stacked against you. Schedules are necessarily tight. Performance concerns are paramount. And the requirements are prone to change as the game play is refined. This means that all three points of the software project (quality, schedule, requirements) are in play. To survive you need knowledge, tools, wisdom, and a little luck. This book provides you with at least three of those four.

3 out of 5 stars Covers too many topics.......2004-06-06

The author tries to hard to cover the basics of making games. It sort of reminds me a class study guide, i.e., everything lumped together in a highly condensed manner.
