Written by an engineer from central New York, its no wonder the style is awful and the code doesn't work! Engineers in CNY are always rushed to get product out the door, whatever the cost to quality, and the fact that this book is rife with errors and typos only shows the lack of technical skills of the "editor".
Nice, pretty cover though.
A look at current controversies, such as mandatory service A chronology provides the historical context for understanding the current status of community service, completing this practical and accessible guide to understanding and implementing good community service programs.

I bought this book for my husband last summer when we had a fantastic trip through beatiful New Zealand.
He enjoyed it so much he passed it on to me. Much to my surprise (and delight!) there's not a lot of golf in it.
Okay, so he plays the odd game but it's really about the adventures New Zealander Justin Brown has as he travels around the US meeting strange folk. My fav. chapter would have to be the clown wedding in Richmond closely followed by Miss Iva, the 91 year old (young!) beach queen from Tybee Island.
I was glad to see the wonderful hospitality we received in New Zealand was recipricated for Justin.
If you just want to sit back and have a laugh I throughly recommend this book. It's funny, crazy and off the wall.

Lee Tyler is a veteran travel writer and current member of the Golf Writers Association of America. Other books include The Case Of The Missing Links.
Hawaii is full of mystery and romance, and when Harry "Win" Winslow and June Jacobs (who are self-described top golfing sleuths) are talked into watching over the new Mauna Makai golf course for a week, they have no idea that they will be dealing with more than just political mischief. Mauna Makai has an ancient wall, known as "papohaku" running through it. The wall is both the draw and the originator of many of the problems Martha Masters and Doug Banner have been having in getting the golf course online in time for a big celebrity wedding and the launching of the golf course:
"As they lurched along toward the first hole, Ted said, 'I live up-country, up there, about ten miles away.' He pointed to a mountain in the distance. 'See that rainbow? That's Waimea, where I live. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I hear this golf course calling to me. Like it's crying for help. So I get up at like two in the morning and get dressed and drive down here to check on things. My wife thinks I'm crazy. Doug here thinks I'm superstitious. Me, I'm just doing my job. And you know what? Every time I've come down here, there's been something screwy. Like majorly wrong.' He turned to Doug and said, 'Explain that with your mainland logic.'"
Tyler has combined the game of golf, ancient Hawaiian mythology, and a couple of scatterbrained sleuths to produce a whimsical tale about love, ghosts, and the history and culture of Hawaii. The Teed-Off Ghost is an excellent book to pull out on a cold winter day, as Tyler's passages about luaus can't help but warm the spirit. Tyler pokes fun at the obsession of golfers, while treating us to a warm Hawaiian experience complete with lots of terminology for the uninitiated. She adds island mystery, an entertaining and irascible ghost, and handsome natives who play havoc with the ladies' hearts. The Teed-Off Ghost is more about getting into the native spirits than it is about murder and mayhem, but it is a fun read nevertheless.

Lee did it again! I rate this one my favorite of her works so far. She put a great deal of emphasis on historical detail while spinning a mysterious little tale of intrigue for her two main characters. The detective couple starts out to enjoy rounds of golf in the Hawaiian Islands and ends up solving a unique mystery. It made a great summer read in my backyard hammock.

The controversial Dave Hill tees off with his opinions on everything from golf swings, to sex(His scene at 18th green at the old atlanta open is priceless) to the US Open course Hazeltine GC that he said was only missing 80 acres of corn and a few cows. Funny, often biting, the book is still worth reading today.

This is an odd one. While valuable, this book exists in the shadow of "Hardcore Troubadour." Specifically, while taking pot shots at the accuracy of the above-noted book, it also quotes extensively from the above-noted book in the absence of independent research. "Fearless Heart" does contain some great insight from Stacey Earle, Mark Stuart, and Steve's dad.
Terrific Overview of Earle's career in music, and the context in which it was spawned.......2005-12-03
David McGee is a gifted writer who takes the approach of focusing on the music of the great singer/songwriter Steve Earle, rather than making this a soap opera, which much of his personal life has been. I read the previous biography by Lauren St. John and came away pretty confused. McGee does a much better job of clearly describing what's going on in Steve's life, but focusing on the musical side of things. Earle's genius is obvious in these pages, but McGee is perfectly willing to reveal the flawed genius Earle is in his writing.
The book is an easy read, but also a rewarding read.

Al-Jazeera and other satellite television stations have transformed Arab politics over the last decade. By shattering state control over information and giving a platform to long-stifled voices, these new Arab media have challenged the status quo by encouraging open debate about Iraq, Palestine, Islamism, Arab identity, and other vital political and social issues. These public arguments have redefined what it means to be Arab and reshaped the realm of political possibility. As Marc Lynch shows, the days of monolithic Arab opinion are over. How Arab governments and the United States engage this newly confident and influential public sphere will profoundly shape the future of the Arab world.
Marc Lynch draws on interviews conducted in the Middle East and analyses of Arab satellite television programs, op-ed pages, and public opinion polls to examine the nature, evolution, and influence of the new Arab public sphere. Lynch, who pays close attention to what is actually being said and talked about in the Arab world, takes the contentious issue of Iraq-which has divided Arabs like no other issue-to show how the media revolutionized the formation and expression of public opinion. He presents detailed discussions of Arab arguments about sanctions and the 2003 British and American invasion and occupation of Iraq. While Arabs strongly disagreed about Saddam's regime, they increasingly saw the effects of sanctions as a potent symbol of the suffering of all Arabs. Anger and despair over these sanctions shaped Arab views of America, their governments, and themselves.
Lynch also suggests how the United States can develop and improve its engagement with the Arab public sphere. He argues that the United States should move beyond treating the Arab public sphere as either an enemy to be defeated or an object to be manipulated via public relations. 'To see ourselves as others see us' (from Robert Burns) is not something that we are usually granted. In today's world Al-Jazeera is presenting us with that opportunity.
The Arab world is for the most part characterised by leadership that is less than ideal. In most Arab countries the news is heavily censored, controled or owned by a state that just wants its own views to be shown. These media had relatively little to tell us as they were simply parroting the governments view. ==In recent years, Al-Jazeera and other smaller satellite based news agencies have begun presenting a relatively unbiased news report that goes around the official government reporting.
This book is first a report on Al-Jazeera and the way it presents the news. Second, it offers a series of suggestions on how the United States can develop and improve its engagement with the Arab public sphere.
This is one of the few books to report on the Arab view, and further to discuss the changes in the information dissemination area. It is a book that deserves reading by anyone interested in developing a realistic view of the conflict that is emerging between the US and the Arab world.

I was expecting a better explanation of Visual Basic code, my fault I guess, not the author's. This book was actually my second choice (based on your summary of book). I couldn't find thw book I wanted, I found it but it wasn't offered online.
Access, again.......2006-07-03
I hadn't worked in Access for more than a decade. Suddenly I was faced with supporting a database I knew nothing about. The Inside Out book and CD really helped get me familiar with the product again. All the screens shots and disussion of how the product worked helped me get up to speed in no time. I would not hesitate to buy another bool by Ms. Feddema.

It's no good as a quick reference and who has time today to walk your way through 1000+ pages?
The book is as unwieldy as the product it describes. Be happy, if you can get by without ever touching Microsoft Access (and this book).
An acceptable companion volume.......2004-05-25
Rarely will you find one computer book that meets the majority of your needs. Access Inside&Out is no exception to this. I spent a day selectively weeding out all the various Access 2002 volumes available at Borders Bookstore. I looked for selective criteria such as complex expression usage, applied object properties, and general reader presentation/learning flow. The most organized, in-depth, and helpful I found were Access Inside & Out and Access 2002 Bible. Where one book skips over any area you're weak in the other typically goes into thorough detail and vice versus. The other honorable mention is QUE/Jennings Special Edition Using MS Access 2002. None are stand-alone volumes for either direct reference or learning the intricacies of Access yet together you should be well armed to accomplish some intermediate Access goals. Helen's website (www.helenfeddema.com) may help you determine whether to use her book as one of your Access companion books.
InsideOut A Winner.......2004-02-26
I have spent the last several days with this book building a database for a list rental company. Being used to Access 97, I appreciated the chapter devoted to the differences in version. Compared to the Access Bible by Prague and Irwin, the language was easier for a novice to understand, less technical, more end user friendly. The step by step instructions are great because of the abundance of screen shots used. When I couldn't understand the words (like when you are trying to create a complex report), the pictures were priceless. The InsideOut text boxes kept me from a few pitfalls, like the advice on wrting SQL statements. I apprecited the explanations of how to perform tasks in more than one way, both suggestions in the same place, alleviating the search thru the index and table of contents. The only thing I haven't been able to find an explanation for is manually setting a primary key when you want it to AutoNumber, but with your own number. It's probably something really simple.
I've written a lot of tech bulletins, and I can appreciate the minute detail that went into the how-to's in this book.
I highly recommend this, intermediate to advanced DB Admin.
