Its a waste of money!.......2003-04-30
To tell you the truth, I did'nt enjoy reading this book. If you really want to learn more about 1911's, go to the nearest gunsmith.
A Must-have for the to-be 1911 owner.......2003-01-27
I found the information shared extremely helpfull. Where was this book when I bought my first 1911? Had I access to this level of in-depth explaining and discussion of the options available I would have made some different decisions. The author obviously knows his stuff and speaks from first-hand experience. The only criticism I have is that the author only refers to work performed by US gunsmiths. It would have been great if the appendix could also have referenced some reputable smiths in other countries. I know this is probably unlikely to happen due to the logistics involved...
Excellent.......2002-08-01
If you own or like 1911's you should buy this book and the Gun Digest book of the 1911.
Tells you junk you already know........2002-04-14
This book isn't worth it. It tells you lots of nonsense about how to customize your 1911, but not much how to deploy it in a "tactical" sense. Lauck pushes expensive customization of Colt 1911's but doesn't even touch the newer (and much better) clones. (Kimber, Springfield, etc.).
excellent- absolutely recommended.......1999-11-17
i cannot reccomend this book enough, i have been shooting for almost 16 years, been a police officer for almost 5, consider myself pretty knowledgble about firearms. this book answered questions i didnt even know i had, or ideas as to why/why not on the 1911. dave lauck is also an excellent craftsman, a real gentleman with whom to deal, takes great pride in his work, and if you have ever read any reviews on any of his work in the gun mags, all come back 'superior'. also to his credit, there is not a sentence of pitching his work, it speaks for itself and his reputation is known among operators as an excellent craftsman

Of interest and use to a small segment.......2001-04-09
As with all collections of essays, the success of Organized Labor and American Politics, 1894-1994: The Labor-Liberal Alliance rests on the strengths and weaknesses of its varied contributions. The essays, all written by historians sympathetic to the goals of organized labor and liberal Democratic politics consider several important questions: Why did the labor movement align itself with the liberals as opposed to pushing for a more radical social agenda? How is the liberal-labor alliance to be evaluated? What are its successes and where did it fail? Did the labor movement miss an opportunity to form the core of a Social-Democratic Party in the 1930s? What other missed opportunities can be identified?
The essays collected here answer these core questions with chronologically, geographically or thematically narrow essays. For example, Peter Rachleff has written on the failure of the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party to sustain its position as a successful third party. His answer, which identifies the hierarchy of the MFLP, the conflict between the AFL and the CIO, and conflict between the CPUSA and the Socialist Workers' Party, can be read as a broader indictment of the leadership of the labor movement. For Rachleff, the MFLP's success was the root of its failure--it became too much like a traditional political party, losing touch with its grass roots organization and selling out the labor movement. Essays by Bruce Nelson, Gilbert Gall, Julie Greene, Kevin Boyle, Richard Ostreicher, Gary M. Fink, Stephen Amberg, and others to varying degrees all evaluate the labor-liberal alliance with their smaller studies. Most of the essays are traditional studies of organized labor and do not address those workers who are not unionized (Gilbert Gall's essay on the defeat of right-to-work legislation in MO and OH is a notable exception), issues of whiteness and the question of gender and labor.
Finally, the collection assumes a considerable degree of familiarity with the language of organized labor and labor history. It should not be read as an introduction to labor history. The book, however, should appeal to students of labor or political history and their intersection in the twentieth century.

Applauds for Sinatra and Hamill.......2007-09-15
Another masterpiece by Hamill. This work reveals the humanity of Sinatra. It is short, but oh soooooo good! If you are interested in Sinatra, read this book. It is sophisicated and loaded with the nuances of the man who did it his way, faults, bruises, and all.
Sinatra to the point.......2006-10-02
This is a small book. Short and sweet. Mr. Hamill gets right to the point . There isnt a lot of fluff in this book. A few pictures and so anecdotes to start some of the chapters. It written well and the layout is succint. This is a must read for any Sinatra fan.
Consider The Source.......2006-06-18
Ironic that Pete Hamill should write this book. To my ears and eyes, Pete Hamill has never written a sincere or honest word in his life.
The irony is that when Sinatra was asked how he wanted to be remembered, he said he would want people to think of him as an honest singer.
The book is good, but read it with a grain of salt due to the author.
The man and his music.......2006-04-19
I like this book because it isn't like all the other Sinatra biographies out there. In fact, it isn't really appropriate to call "Why Sinatra Matters" a biography at all. Author Pete Hamill was an acquaintance of Sinatra's and much of the book is built around conversations that the two men had together, which is very interesting. This book gives a general overview of Sinatra's upbringing and rise to stardom. Hamill explains how Sinatra's childhood and Italian American background contributed to the development of his music. Sinatra's "fall from grace" is also examined, but Hamill is quick to point out that the only thing that really matters is that Sinatra was able to overcome his obstacles and make an incredible comeback. There has never been another singer like Frank Sinatra and there never will be again. Sinatra continues to represent so many things to so many people, which is why his music will live on forever.
Some Outstanding Ideas, But Just a Touch too Much Gossip! .......2005-05-24
Many of the basic, well known aspects of FS's life are mentioned here, starting with the Genoan and Sicilian branches of his family history, his quiet father and brash, Democratic Ward Leader mother. The segment on Bing Crosby's huge influence on 1930's popular culture, especially in the new radio-centered family (like TV today) is great, and perhaps not known too much today. FS as an icon for immigrant Italians, along with LaGuardia and DiMaggio, is also a high point. The days with James and Dorsey are also well done, if rehashes, like much of this otherwise excellent book. And much is written about FS's legendary "Fall" and 2nd Rise, the Fall being among the most overdone of FS's incredible life.(Many would love to fall from such Olympian heights!). Mr. Hamill says that the music is what matters. Obviously, he's right! Only Frank could sing so well about the depths of anguish and despair, as well as the thrill of triumph! The author also gives a nice summation of the great work of FS with Nelson Riddle. Unfortunately, short shrift is given to Billy May, and a short paragraph mocks the "sugary" work of Gordon Jenkins. Oddly, the most famous pairing of Jenkins and FS, "September of My Years" is listed in the appendix as among Mr. Hamill's favorite albums! It would have been nice if a CD was included, since this book does not really mine the golden depths of FS's best recordings. Still, all in all, a fine and succinct presentation of The Man and His Music.

Book Description
The Andy Griffith Show continues to have a huge worldwide following. While many factors contribute to the show's ongoing popularity, many fans continue to point to the basic moral principles upheld by each and every episode. The Way Back to Mayberry takes an irresistible look at these moral themes and values promoted by the show and examines them in light of biblical truth. Each episode is described, and then the message of each show is looked at in detail, along with a biblical example of the theme, and an application for our lives today. This heart-warming book wanders back to a place where life seemed simpler and attention was paid to the little things.

True Spirit of Mayberry.......2004-02-21
Heartwarming book on the wonderful lessons from Mayberry. Author presents many personal stories and reflections from the classic TV show - a very satisfying read. No Andy Griffith collection is complete without this volume!
New Look at an Old Show.......2003-04-19
Being a huge Andy Griffith fan, I picked this book up the other day. Don't know what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Any Andy fan can tell you that the show was full of good, heart-warming stories, but I had never thought of the show in the terms presented by the author. To clarify, this book is not filled with epsisode trivia, or preachy sermon topics. However, it does present unique thoughts and observations regarding the timeless themes of Mayberry from a personal perspective. In almost every chapter, the author relates a personal story that will make you laugh, cry, or just reflect on simpler pace of life - kind of like The Andy Griffith Show used to do! If you have even a casual appreciation of the "Old Griffith Show", you will enjoy this book.
Goober's the Best.......2002-02-02
If you're a fan of Goober and the Mayberrians you will like this book. It will have a special place in your bookshelves. When at University of Alabama I met George Lindsey, who went to school at UOA. To me, Goob made the show! Take it from Sharon a longtime Goober fan.
The Gospel According To Andy.......2001-06-15
This is a feel-good approach to a TV phenomenon that is still delighting audiences thirty years later. Fann has hit on one of the reasons for the show's success: each episode contains moral truths and spiritual guidelines intricately woven into the storyline, and these are just as applicable to today's sophisticated, special effects-bombarded viewers as they were to the technicolor-challenged children of the sixties. Fann devotes a separate chapter to thirty of his favorite episodes. He gives a brief synopsis of the events, and then he presents parallel biblical principles that he feels are being showcased. He often peppers his writing with anecdotes from his own experience, and many of these have a "Chicken Soup" kind of approach. Because each chapter is self-sufficient, the book can be read incrementally--a chapter at a time, or it can be enjoyed in its entirety for those who have larger blocks of leisure time available. Each chapter begins with a correlating verse from scripture. For those teaching Andy Griffith Bible studies, this book is a wonderful companion for use in lesson preparation.

Very Good Text on Object Design, A great first text on OO design, Total Disappointment for experienced Programmers.......2007-02-04
I have to agree with some earlier reviews on this book.
1. Very Good Text on Object Design,
2. A great first text on OO design,
3. Total Disappointment for Programmers
This is a great book on Object Oriented Design, but ONLY for novice and intermediate object modelers. It is not for an experienced developer who already knows how to use some of the design patterns in Gang of Four book.
If we use an analogy to compare this two books, if Gang of Four Design Pattern book is for post graduate students, Object Design is for the student in the second year of the university.
I want to read more on Object Oriented development so I started to read this book, mainly attracted by its cover. Domain Driven Design by Eric Avans falls into the same category but offers much more exercise for your brain.
Hope this is helpful. I have 10+ years in software development, 7+ years in Java, understand OO and Domain Driven Design.
5 Star Book for a beginner.
Hit and Misses.......2006-01-05
The authors provides a good introduction to object oriented analysis and design. Some may find that the content is too wishy washy with seemingly vague advice in many areas. The responsibility driven approach along with object stereotypes are indeed a good way to approach OO design however. The concept of object neighborhood and control style are also worthy of praise.
If the reader persists they'll be rewarded with a good understanding of why OO design is needed. There are nuggets of wisdom throughout the book, however many sections seem to be hastily done and glossed over. Too many times the authors resort to bullet listings to explain concepts. That may be acceptable in today's power point age but its not acceptable for a technical book. Reading lists after lists of advice is not a good way to learn and retain concepts.
Developer, Programmer, and System Modeler.......2005-09-18
I have read so many OOAD books, none of which give me a clear idea how and why software design should be designed that way,
at which situration, according to which external facts should the correct design decision be selected and considered.
In core OO design stream, we will distributed/assigned each object with their desirable responsibilities, we must select a flexible control and coordation style to allow software for change. it is a system view of our software.
This book given me a best introduction to think a solution all above questions and design views(system behavours).
When I read and studies this book, it let me consolid and remenber many knowledge above control theory, layer architecture of big software system such as CAD system.
Each project have particular siturations and design constraints,
how we can design a useful software to solve user requirements is the first thing to consider.
Many formal formalism will not be work for flexiblity, such as RUP CMMI... etc, those processes like a doing documentation not a useful design and devlivery working software that fit our users requests. I think experience programmer, developer should more thinking in system point of view.
Total Disappointment for Programmers.......2005-03-04
I am a developer/programmer for a technical software company and my review contains my perception of this book from that perspective. I must also disclose that I am sceptical of any object-oriented design methodology that involves a lot of writing. We are "programmers", not story writers (read use cases).
When I ordered this book a week ago, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book because it sounded so promising. My enthusiasm turned into total disappointment so quickly I couldn't believe myself; I had to give another shot in reading this book to make sure. But I am convinced; the authors managed the impossible task of filling its 390 pages without saying anything substantial about object-oriented design for a professional software developer.
The book might be useful for a novice programmer or a manager in terms of defining the object design jargon and process. But other than this, it provides no valuable advice for a professional. These are some of the points that I find ridiculously simplistic and almost idiotic:
- In my opinion use cases and CRC cards all boil down to writing on a piece of paper what classes one should use and what these classes should do. This is not methodology, it is common sense. Any sensible developer would write down his/her ideas about the classes involved in an application before starting to program.
- Although it is valuable advice to think about class responsibilities, the book states nothing more than the obvious in terms of finding what responsibilities should be assigned to which classes. Statements like "Responsibilities come from statements or implications of system behavior found in use cases" are tautologies. Where else would they come from!
- Or the chapter on Flexibility says things like "Find out what you don't know". I can't even begin to elaborate on philosophical implications of such advice!
Although the book looks appealing to the eye, it has no clear content. It states ideas about classes, responsibilities, etc without a clear structure; and after a while, everything said seems to be a repetition of some earlier statements.
If you are serious about object-oriented design as a "programmer" I recommend these three books:
1. Gamma E., et al., Design Patterns.
2. James R Rumbaugh, et al., Object-Oriented Modeling and Design. A bit dated, but you will get all you need to know about object oriented design from this book.
3. Bjarne Stroustrup, The C++ Programming Language (Special 3rd Edition). Never mind it is a C++ book. Chapters on OOD (I think chapters 21-25) will tell you exactly what you need to understand to start programming using OO approach.
Do yourself a favor and invest in these books; and ignore all the fab about such trendy books such as the one reviewed above.
OO-Collaborations Perspective.......2004-11-23
Overall very good impression, original presentation with sidebar essential quotes. However after a while seems more of the same: how to identify collaborations in an Object Oriented Design. Special note for Chapter 8, where valuable and interesting information is provided regarding exceptions and errors.
