Quick, Direct, and to the Point.......2002-04-22

In all my years in both academic and professional circles, it still surprises me that many people, from graduate students and professors to high-powered CEOs and executive directors of non-profit organizations, do not know how to prepare and present their sterling qualifications on paper. As such, this explains the vital importance of Anthony and Roe's Curriculum Vitae Handbook. By now, one might imagine that the content of this outstanding book to be de riguer among academics and professionals, and that at best, the book can only guide the reader in the preparation of a CV that does not stand out in a bad way. Nonetheless, given the considerable compositional and quantitative faux paus I have witnessed many individuals make in the preparation and presentation of their CVs, I sincerely believe that this text is a critical component of any aspiring and seasoned professional's arsenal.

After defining exactly what a CV is, the book offers a few terse paragraphs on a variety of topics that include, but are not limited to, things such as promoting and using the CV, CV format, length, and content, and the nuts of bolts of preparing the CV. The text really emphasizes revision in the CV writing process, and warns the reader against putting down on paper anything and everything one has done in the final CV document that is destined for distribution. The book tells the reader that apart from the three most critical elements of a CV and a standard resume (name, address and educational attainment), good judgment, common sense, and the position one seeks dictate what should be included in the final document. The authors note that what should and should not go into the final draft, as well as how the final draft of the CV appears from the presentation standpoint, will naturally change over time.

They also admonish against the use of standard, cookie-cutter formats when presenting the content of a CV, as this may place onerous constraints on someone whose achievements may not be adequately accommodated by the prevailing CV style in one's field. The authors emphasize the general, though very important rule of content first, style second. The book really pays for itself, however, with its extensive sample CVs, and manages to present one CV for just about every conceivable academic discipline. Along with each sample CV comes a few useful pointers, or strategic features, to help the reader optimally tailor the CV content for his or her particular discipline. Once the CV has been prepared, the authors show the reader how to go about turning the CV into a standard resume. A final section on the drafting of suitable cover letters rounds out the text, and the authors include two appendices covering contact information for professional societies and a brief resource list.

Aside from the overtly terse nature of the text and its simplistic economy of prose (which I find to be a good thing), the book has three minor disadvantages. Written before the entrenchment of the electronic resume, the book does not cover in any considerable detail how to prepare a scan-ready document. The authors should try to update their otherwise excellent text by including a list of keywords for the electronic version of the resume, and include a few sample resumes towards the end of the book. Second, some topics presented at the start of the book, such as the suggested CV Categories in the CV Content section of the text, could have used some expansion via explanation of the various headings and a few good examples of what to include underneath those headings. Finally, the use of standard chapters in future editions of the text would be a minor but nonetheless helpful organizational improvement.

I suggest that readers use Acy L. Jackson's Prepare Your Curriculum Vitae to assist in organizing and developing the content of the CV, and then pull out this book to format and put the finishing touches on the CV's style for subsequent distribution. Also, Jackson's Prepare Your Curriculum Vitae contains thoughtful, more developed chapters on electronic resume preparation and the drafting of noticeable and successful cover letters. Overall, I highly recommend this book to those individuals in need of a few pointers on presentation and style in CV and resume preparation.

I love the LOTR music, and these books (I have all 3) are great. The music is above beginner level, but not impossible to play.

Great Music for Intermediate Piano Players.......2006-03-18

The Two Towers Music score is wonderful and will be enjoyed by people who love to listen to the LOTR soundtracks. The music for Gollum's song is wonderful, and not too hard once you get it down. Evenstar is very beautiful and also very easy. "Isengard Unleashed" features "The March of the Ents", one of my favorite parts of this book. "Breath of Life" is not exceptional if you ask me, but it's there. "Forth Eorlings" is wonderful, especially the ending! And finally, If you've been trying really hard to figure out how that Rohan theme goes, wait no more. Here it is, and it's really fun! So if your at least an intermediate piano player and love Lord of the Rings music this is for you.

good, but not worth $12.71.......2005-01-18

When I first looked at the music, my impression was "This is it?" I must admit I expected more, but after playing it my opinion changed. It definitely takes intermediate skills to play as written, but with a few minor adjustments (like leaving out a roll or slowing down the tempo) late beginners can enjoy this music too.
While playing, I find the constant page turning annoying. The music could have been condensed into a smaller amount of pages without omitting any of the notes thus making playing easier.
Overall, it is beautiful. All of the well-known melodies are there. Played with the right emotion and expression, "Gollum's Song" is heartbreaking; "Evenstar" is beautiful; and "Rohan" is powerful. The music is not as complex as I had hoped, but it sticks to the notes played in the original score.
Is this a good arrangement? Yes. Is the arrangement worth $12.71? No, but I guess the higher price is for the pictures included.

Excellent soundtrack-to-piano music...Rohan is to die for.......2004-07-05

It's books like this that made me wish I had the natural talent for music, or had at least studied and practiced hard enough to develop talent. The motion picture score that Howard Shore composed for The Lord of the Rings trilogy is absolutely brilliant, and while nothing can match his magnificent orchestra, there is something unique and incredible about hearing the same music played on a simple piano -- coming from your very own fingers.

The front cover is one of the promotional posters (NOT the DVD cover as was the case with the other two piano books from the trilogy) showing Saruman from the back commanding his 10,000 Uruk-hai. If you look on the right, although it is geographically incorrect, you can see Edoras in Rohan in the distance. Inside the book are forty pages, eight of which are movie pictures. Once again, there are some gruesome orcs pictured inside, in case you have little hobbits around the house that might get scared.

The music includes:

- Gollum's Song, the end-credits song of the movie. Not very enjoyable to play, I'd say...it's a rather mournful and melancholy song.

- Evenstar, which is all-Elvish, but surprisingly doesn't provide the translation. Shouldn't be too hard to dig one up on the internet, however. The tune is pretty, the background for Aragorn's dream/vision of Arwen in The Two Towers.

- Isengard Unleashed, which begins as the soundtrack score does, with the lament for Haldir upon his untimely death in the battle for Helm's Deep. Then it moves on to the score for the Ents as they march to war. This is probably the longest in the book, maybe of all three books. Afterwards, they give the translation of the war song of the Ents.

- Breath of Life, the quiet but stirring tune/song that you hear when Aragorn lies wounded after a battle, and receives another vision/dream of Arwen that gives him a (let's all say it together now) "breath of life". Elvish lyrics, English translation at the end.

- Forth Eorlingas, my favorite one (at least to HEAR), the tune that shows the rousing of the remaining soldiers at Helm's Deep, their death plunge out the causeway, and Gandalf's near-biblical arrival to the rescue. The second-best in this book, in my opinion.

- Rohan, which was an absolutely necessary piece to include in this book. It's short, *almost* simple enough for a beginner like me to pick my way through, and beyond gorgeous. It begins with the noble theme for Éowyn, and peaks into the majestic score for the kingdom of Rohan. This one alone is worth getting the book for.

This book makes an excellent addition to your piano library, or an excellent gift for your musically-inclined hobbit-heads. Go for it.

Beautiful pieces!.......2004-02-18

This book contains some of the best music ever written! I play this stuff over and over, because not only is it awesome, it's fun. "Gollum's Song" is a haunting, beautiful song - one that really makes you feel sorry for Gollum. "Evenstar" is also a beautifully flowing piece. It's easy to put a lot of expression in it when you play it. "Isengard Unleashed" is a more complicated piece, once you get about half way through it, and it's rather hard to figure out in the beginning. "Breath of Life" and "Forth Eorlingas" are pretty simple, but redundant at times. "Rohan" is an absolutely amazing song that just makes me want to cry when I play it. That also lends itself to expression while playing. All together, this book is an absolute masterpiece, and while harder than the book for The Fellowship of the Ring, in my opinion, it is still pretty simple, and the arrangments are much better. I highly recommend this book. It's beautiful!!

However, relatively little research has been conducted to quantify the influence of SIGINT in war. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and quantify the influence of SIGINT in warfare by developing an interactive wargame based on the McCue simulation of the U-boat War in the Atlantic. The research comprises two phases. Phase one consists of constructing an interactive wargame version of McCue's simulation. In the wargame, a human player directs convoys across a chessboard representation of the North Atlantic while the computer controls the movement of the U-boats and tabulates the number of U- boat attack-days. Phase one tests how well the wargame models reality using historical data. The second phase of research consists of experimenting within the wargame to explore the effects of varying levels of SIGINT. Each iteration of the wargame, reflecting one of four possible SIGINT conditions, is repeated to derive statistics about the influence of signals intelligence. The results show about a twenty-five percent net change in the number of attack-days for the side utilizing SIGINT.

Despite a thirty percent reduction in manpower needs, the military is continually failing to meet its retention requirements. The result is that our service members have more non-military career options than ever before, and too many are choosing them. Even if I didn't read every single "Hardy Boys" book there awesome. I just know because they fight and do boys stuff. I even read more "Hardy Boys" books than school work. I just wish they had a holiday where you read "Hardy Boys", for just one whole entire month (no school no nothing except reading "Hardy Boys").

Holy, man! I've read almost every single Casefile there is and I can list them all in order off the top of my head. I love their books and I think that they're great! The Casefiles are so much more interesting than the blue books. You know that there's always going to be danger and excitment in each book, but you also know that Frank is going to be teasing Joe and Joe is going to do something funny too. That's why I like all of their books.

I just started reading The Hardy Boys--before, I read Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys--but I think this was really good since Nancy Drew got kinda annoying after a while. It was interesting and it kept me reading--in fact, I pretty much read it in one sitting! Good characters and good plot.

I really love these new "Casefiles collector's editions" I've bought them all, and I think that this one is the best so far. In "Beyond The Law," Frank and Joe must help their old friend/enemy Ezra Collig, and clear him of extortion. In "Spiked!" they get involved in a case of murder in Southern Callifornia, and in "Open Season," the boys fight for their lives while on a cross country ski trip in the Colorado Rockies. I really enjoyed all three stories, and would recommend them to anyone.

This is a great series of books together! I espscially love Uncivil War(since the civil war i just love!) Choke hold is very suspenseful. Dixon stops the chapter right when something is happening to Frank or Joe. I just love it!

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Current federal and state reform initiatives address the significant cost savings of prevention and health promotion services and consider these services central to future community-based systems of health care. Few studies have been conducted in the United States regarding the delivery of health promotion services in the acute care setting. Little is known about the role of the staff nurse caring for the inpatient population in regard to the health promotion services these nurses provide. The purpose of this study is to: (1) examine and describe the personal health promoting lifestyle behaviors of a group of nurses working on acute care wards in a military treatment facility; (2) identify nurses attitudes and beliefs about health promotion activities in professional nursing practice; and (3) examine and describe the professional health promotion practices of nurses within the inpatient setting, specifically the health education activities pertaining to smoking, alcohol, exercise, and nutrition.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The world is in the midst of a revolution in the conduct of military operations wherein modem military aerospace information systems, weapons and their associated weapon systems are changing the conduct of warfare. Aerospace power has become the dominant, if not decisive, factor in modem warfare. Yet, there are currently no treaties dealing specifically with the law of armed conflict in the air and space environments. Chapter 1 describes the evolution to date of the law governing aerospace warfare. Chapter II analyzes the relevance of military interventions in Iraq and Yugoslavia (Bosnia; Kosovo) to the law of air and space warfare. Chapter III discusses the impact of humanitarian intervention' on the law of aerospace warfare. Chapters IV and V explore the role and effect of earth-based and space-based military assets respectively. This thesis concludes that although the existing law of armed conflict is capable of evolving to cope with the legal issues posed by aerospace warfare in the twenty-first century, the conclusion of multilateral agreements to deal with some of those issues is advisable.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Military operations other than war are increasing in frequency and, as one might surmise present unique challenges to the operational commander and the medical planner. Over time and by necessity the U.S. military has developed a logistical support system with unprecedented capability. This logistical system includes a medical system that is increasingly called upon to provide care to people outside the normal scope. Increased participation means Navy assets will be tasked to provide care to U.S. troops, U.N. troops, multinational troops, NGO personnel, and the civilians that precipitated the need for intervention in the first place. The current planning paradigm is, rightfully, focused on combat support. This thesis will investigate the necessity of breaking away from that paradigm when planning MOOTW. There is no standardized guidance, methodology, templates, matrices or even a set of guiding principles for the medical planner to use when tasked with planning a medically complex contingency operation. This thesis will compare the Navy planning method with Army methods and, combined with primary source interviews, and the knowledge acquired in this graduate program, provide the reader with planning guidance unique to the medical aspects of MOOTW.

VERY problematic.......2007-02-22

I question whether anyone praising this book has actually gone through it exercise by exercise. You get stonewalled on a regular basis by botchy instructions. The wording is often poor, crucial steps are omitted, and many of the diagrams are useless. The text, for example, may instruct you to select an edge "as shown in fig. x," but the diagram is in grayscale and all the edges look alike (probably the authors intended these to be color diagrams).

The complexity of the software is no excuse for slapdash instructions. A good editor could have clarified much of this. What's unforgivable is the amount of information that is flat-out wrong, producing error messages and contradicting Maya's own online help. Get ready to be stymied for months by this thing.

If there is anything you still dont know about maya, this is the book your looking for, this book explain a lot of things, about almost everything.

A book that really can take you to mastry........2006-10-15

As an educator, developer and 3D enthusiast I can most highly recommend Mastering Maya 7. It is completely true to its title, and given enough time and patience can lead even a novice 3D user to advanced modeling and and well beyond. I was particularly drawn to this book because I'm interested in character modeling, and this was the only treatment I could find that leads you through the process of character creation from the blank page, step-by-step. The book provides everything you need to know, from low-poly modeling techniques, to character rigging for animation, texture mapping your character and much more. The book is definitely intermediate to advanced ~~ novices be warned you are not going to become a 3D artist overnight. But for those who want to bring their work up to production quality levels, this volume has most, if not all of what you need.

As a professional instructor, I found the crispness of the presentation particularly appealing. The steps in each exercise are presented in a thorough manner with just enough but not too much detail. And I particularly like the way the book starts with a thorough introduction to the tool and its myriad features in the context of a simple exercise but then jumps right in to professional quality modeling, artistry and development. It's not easy to come up with just the right level of description in a how-to manual that deals with as horribly complex a beast as Maya. Most approaches I've read to teaching the modeling packages (3DSMax, Maya etc) just present a mish-mash of examples for the hundreds of features in these complex tools but don't really show you how to do anything. But in adopting a hands-on, teach-by-way-of-example approach, these authors have found a sweet spot. I am very happy to have found this book and will be digging through and mining it for many months, if not years, to come. Well done folks!

A Total Dissapointment!.......2006-07-23

I bought this book in hope of that it was as good as all the reviews said. The first 2 chapters of the book was really good, but when I got to the 3rd chapter the book became a hell. You were supposed to create a templete for a polygonal model, and at the part where you were supposed to finnish it, the author turned mad and though that you were a Maya Expert or something like that, cause the instructions were impossible to understand and you couldent do as they said either.

As if this wasnt enough, I keep finding missing files from the CD-rom too. At this time I have found 2 missing files.

If I could have rated this book 0 I would have done that. Just a total waste of money and time.

Good but flawed.......2006-07-06

The content of the book is generally quite good, methodically going through how to create a model, animate it, and use most of the major functions of Maya. However, sometimes certain steps are omitted, which the writers may think are understood, but as other instructions are very detailed and step by step it can be confusing.
I find two major flaws, however. One is that the writers must have been using an earlier version of 7.0, as menu items described are different than the way Maya actually presents them.
Also, many files are missing from the CD. The Chapter Files will not decompress on a Macintosh computer at all, and when transferred from a PC certain image files are missing. Whether this is a platform issue or a faulty CD I can't say, but it is frustrating to have to work around this.
