don't believe the hype.......2007-03-21
reviews are off the top of head throwaways...and you'll be disgusted to find that METALLICA and NINE INCH NAILS have no entries. go look! unbelievable!
2.5 stars - Extremely flawed........2006-12-12
Mind you, I didn't buy this book, but I did give it a very thorough looking through during a two hour visit to Borders.
I went through this entire book, looking at the artists that I like, including R&B and a little bit of hip hop. I cannot speak for their reviews for other genres, but for the ones I read about the actual albums I own... the reviews are extremely flawed. Almost every review I read, I disagreed with.
Erykah Badu's album, Baduizm, was given a mere 3/5 stars. This album is now considered a classic, yet it is supposedly musically equivalent to Janet's 'Damita Jo' and worse than Toni Braxton's 'More Tha A Woman?!' And Erykah's terrible live album is also 3/5 stars? Jill Scott's classic albums are only considered 3 star material, too? TLC's 'Crazysexycool' is, too? Missy Elliott's best album is her first, 'Da Real World' is her worst and 'This Is Not A Test' is her second best?!!! I could go on and on...
It is nice to spark up conversation between your music buddies, I guess. The book is a very entertaining read and the writing/critiquing can be admired, but as far as using this as a guide for albums to buy and not buy... 2 thumbs down.
I used to like this book, the original that is.......2006-12-07
No George Harrison, but Milli Vanilli and Paula Adbuhl? This just goes to show you what a joke Rolling Stone has become. Looking at the publication date they omitted George Harrison after his death. What insensitivity, compounded by the fact that he was one of the Beatles to which credit is certainly due for helping to exist a culutre that a magazine like Rolling Stone started as a result of, and certainly thrived from.
Rolling Stone has lost most of what little respect I have for them anymore.
Credibility in short supply.......2006-06-10
If it was 1983, Blink-182 would be dismissed as "a poor man's Descendents" and given 1 and 2 star ratings for their albums in the Rolling Stone Album Guide. Here, of course, the writers conveniently skip over Alanis Morisette's early pop albums and give Jagged Little Pill (angry sold units in '95, and this record is reeeall angry) a near perfect rating. The 1983 and 1992 editions are much better reference guides, despite the fact that this edition covers much more ground. There's a clear difference between this and the older editions. Many of the album reviews here are no more critical than a write-up from a record label promoting product. A 5 star album is supposed to be perfect or nearly flawless. Dookie by Green Day is not a 5 star album. Kid Rock and Shania Twain have never and will never release 4 star albums. I love how the writers used to tear into hacks like the Osmonds and Olivia Newton John in earlier editions. The wit, the bite, and the critical integrity just aren't there anymore. Regardless, I bought it (all music geeks will), but I don't think this book should be anyone's last word on what albums to buy.
Deeply flawed...but essential.......2006-06-01
First of all - do not think of this as a reference book. There are far too many omissions and even more curious inclusions. (I'm not going to debate the mix of artists - it's simply curious.) With that in mind, if you treat the book as a collection of essays on popular music, you will find countless hours of reading pleasure. In particular, the essays on major classic rock acts are exceptional - and exceptionally free from the Wenner-driven star gazing that has marred RS's record reviews from day one. One could read chronologically from Elvis through Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Beach Boys, Who, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, and on (with the glaring exception of Metallica) and get as clear a picture of the development of rock and roll as anyone has gathered in one volume anywhere. New insights pop up everywhere (David Bowie and Prince, for instance, much stronger in comparison to their peers.) For long time RS readers, amusing transitions in taste will appear (especially evident in the CCR section which gives credit to the rhythm section for much of the band's impact. During their recording years Rolling Stone hated CCR's rhythm section. You couldn't read a paragraph about the band that didn't mention how stiff they were.)
This book has provided my bathroom reading for the last two years. Rock and roll is way too wild and ferocious to lend itself to a definitive collection of criticism. There are far better compilations of discographies out there, but there aren't any better collections of essays on popular music. An uncut diamond of a book.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Anyone watching the prime-time sitcom Will & Grace may feel that the first and most essential steps toward gay civil rights in America--visibility and acceptance--have been achieved. Not so fast, says Georgetown University professor Suzanna Danuta Walters, whose readable, witty study tracks the murky relationship between visibility and political progress. In her search for examples, Walters casts a wide net that brings up everything from the hatemongering of Dr. Laura, to gay marriage initiatives, to gay-targeted Budweiser and IKEA ads. She focuses in particular on two pivotal events of the 1990s: the coming out of Ellen DeGeneres and the murder of Matthew Shepard, arguing that "these two events illustrate the confusing and often incomprehensible tenor of the times. We rejoice at breaking down one barrier only to be faced, again, with the ugliness and brutality of another." You win some, you lose some, in other words. While Walters's even-handedness means that her thesis doesn't exactly sizzle, readers will appreciate her thoughtful optimism and the ways in which she brings her own life, and her experiences as a lesbian mom, into her larger argument. --Regina Marler
Book Description
From the public outing of Ellen DeGeneres and the success of Will and Grace to the vicious murder of Matthew Shepard, recent years have seen gay lives and images move onto the center stage of American public life. In this incisive and authoritative guide to the new gay visibility, Suzanna Danuta Walters argues that we now live in a time when gays are seen, but not necessarily known. Taking on the common wisdom that equates visibility with full integration, All the Rage maps the terrain on which gays are accepted as witty film accessories and sassy sitcom stars yet denied full citizenship.
Customer Reviews:
This book makes a new perspective on GLBT equality 'visible'.......2005-05-04
This engaging and readable account of modern GLBT/queer history argues that gays and lesbians have become increasingly visible in the past thirty years. Whereas it was once scandalous for GLBT people to meet publicly, many 'mainstream' institutions such as Disney sponsor gay days, if nothing else to demonstrate their own 'inclusivity' and gain money from this community.
Because coming out is such a common event today, myself and other generation xers (regardless of our own sexuality) may inadvertently dismiss the revolutionary impact these declarations of self had for the generations of Americans who were conditioned to believe that GLBT and 'well adjusted' were essentially contradictions in terms.
Gays and lesbians were not the lonely mysterious stranger but friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Any depression which these individuals experienced because of sexuality was the result of society intoning negative self-esteem messages rather than the 'natural' state of being.
Walters's book is also important because she traces how a rise in GLBT visibility (although not the same as equality) has prompted a backlash. The right wing vociferously campaigns against gay rights in today's environment because the greater cultural visibility has effectively undone their own world. Whatever they actually think of GLBT rights, now having to acknowledge that GLBT people exist is a very uncomfortable development.
Prior to Stonewall, these people and their predecessors were effectively enabled to pretend that GLBT people actually did not exist because the prevailing cultural norms had prevented GLBT visibility.
This book primarily deals with the cultural aspects of GLBT rights, but it is still an important and essential read. Both scholars and/or community activists will want to understand how cultural visibility is not the same as political equality but is necessary for facilitating the progress.
All the Rage is All the Rave!.......2002-07-04
Author Suzanna Danuta Walters chronciles the history of gay visibility in America excellently in this book! Looking at it from a variety of perspectives: Cinema, Television, Advertising (Marketing)and her own personal accounts of being a lesbian parent. While the debate rages on over assimilation, equal rights and the unigueness of gay culture, I feel that the author has done an excellent job bringing to light valid arguements while chronciling the history of how far we have come as a culture and how much furhter we have to go. It never ends and we are fooling arourselves to think that it does.
It sometime shocks and angers me how the gay community refuses to support such good work as this. Ignorance in anytything is not bliss!
Anyone interested in any type of gay studies should read this book. The author puts together tons of research into a rich and well developed text.
Refreshing Viewpoint & Highly Recommended!.......2002-01-28
This is one of the most thorough and thought-provoking books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down and have in fact read it more than once. It offers a current and readable analysis of the contradiction between gay visibility in America and the growing trend of such Anti-gay initiatives as the Defense of Marriage Act. It was very enjoyable to read and very insightful.
Readable, interesting, engaging.......2001-11-08
"All the Rage" presents a readable and engaging overview of
gay and lesbian cultural visibility in recent years, with
emphasis on the growing representation in television. The
book takes a middle-of-the-road view that cultural visibility,
while good, does not necessarily imply progress in achieving
political rights (and, in fact, growing cultural visibility
for gays and lesbians has coincided with increasing efforts
to impede progress toward gay rights). The book offers a
number of insights through detailed treatments of particular
TV shows, advertisements, etc., with loving attention. I
thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I learned a lot on
the ride.

Customer Reviews:
Ehh..........2007-07-22
Two stars is generous. Ditto comments of the past reviewer--this is an expansion of the guide that comes with the game, that is, an explanation of what each nation does vs. real strategies, hints, and little known game quirks that you can capitalize on. After a few times on the lower difficulty levels, you'll know everything in the book. This looks like something the game creator would put out. Read the guide and skip this book.
Totally awesome.......2007-04-05
Very helpful and informative. general & specifc strategies, Plus all the statistics you need to make informative decisions.
Practically Useless............2005-05-12
The bulk of the information provided in this manual is easily learned through playing the game at the lower difficulty levels. There are few if any practical strategies discussed in any detail. It appears to be merely a collection and rewording of the descriptions of the Nations and their respective strengths and weaknesses.....The book is a waste of time....
Perspective from an RTS newbie.......2005-04-29
While I've played video games all my life, I've only recently gotten into the RTS genre. I love Rise of Nations, but my limited experience with strategy games was no match for its epic scope, which was a more major step up from Age of Empires II than I realized it would be.
This book has helped quite a bit with that. It has enough basics that it's taken me from extreme beginner to an intermediate phase (I actually started winning games!), and I still have a great deal to learn from it. It provides a good framework for the beginner to learn the genre as a whole, and it adds a good amount of information and special tactics specific to RON.
The more advanced RTS gamer can probably skip most of the first few chapters and get into more advanced tactics and less obvious RON specifics, but it seems like there's still something to learn for everyone.
A Must Have With Rise of Nations!.......2004-03-22
When I purchased this book, I was sort of expecting to see things that where sort of obvious, but I was wrong. This book gives you a thorough view of all of the civilizations, the weaknesses and stregths, the bonuses, and so much more! It also explains tons of other things in the game, such as your military, etc. It also has an entire chapter on strategies, such as rushing, booming, and needle and hammer.
If you plan to purchase Rise of Nations, or you already own it, then you need to purchase this book. If you want to play the game to the fullest, then this book is the key. Not only will it give you better gaming for Rise of Nations, but it will help you win games!
