Very useful information in easy to follow format........2001-08-07
I bought this book when I was doing research for my new child care center. I loved it! It is easy to read and entertaining. At the same time it provides valuable information from an experienced profesional. I loan my copy to parents who are looking to enroll their child in my program. As a parent I could relate to the stories and information.
Excellent help!.......2000-01-04
This book is a goldmine. I never thought I would have to worry about choosing a daycare center, but after I decided (with much agony) to move my child into a center, a friend suggested I read it. I am so glad I did. I realize some of the mistakes I made in my first-choice of daycare, and feel much more confident this time around. I can't think of a single question she did not address in this book, and can't recommend it highly enough.
This book helped give me much more peace of mind than I would have thought possible. My only disappointment is that I don't live close enough to put my child in her center -- the author sounds wonderful!

Lots of details, not many numbers.......2004-01-31
I got this book for a marketing project for school, and in general it was a great help and gave me a lot of ideas, it didn't have some of the detailed numbers I was hoping for. I would have atleast like some examples for how much it costs to rent a truck or crew.

In 1969, when 17-year-old Jeff Durstewitz and some friends wrote a smart-alecky letter to Ruth Tuttle (now Williams), these suburban New York kids assumed she must be "some sort of prototype Southern-belle-racist" because she edited a Mississippi high school newspaper. What they got back was a smart, gracious reply from a nascent rebel desperate for companionship beyond the restrictive confines of Yazoo City. Jeff wrote back apologetically, and an intense relationship was born. The pair found after Jeff's awkward first visit to Mississippi that they weren't destined to be lovers, but nevertheless the friendship endured. Their early letters, surprisingly mature and touchingly vulnerable, remind us how late the '60s started in the South, where Ruth struggled to express more enlightened racial attitudes and protest the Vietnam War without alienating her conservative parents. Jeff's experiences are more conventionally countercultural, right down to the fact that his high school buddies Ben and Jerry grew up to be the famed ice cream moguls. Yet both Jeff and Ruth's lives follow the pattern of many of their generation, beginning with radical politics and grungy communal living and ending in a tentative return to the mainstream and middle-aged settling down. Their correspondence, supplemented by the authors' present-day recollections, evokes with pleasing specificity an era that seems at once very recent and amazingly long ago. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
An unforgettable dual memoir that explores an extraordinary friendship ... and illuminates a generation.
It began in 1969, when a group of bored Long Island high school reporters wrote, for a lark, an obnoxious note to Ruth Tuttle, the editor of a school paper in small-town Mississippi. The ringleader, Jeff Durstewitz, impulsively dropped the letter into a mailbox, never suspecting that within a few days he'd receive an electrifying response. In the following flurry of letters, genteelly Southern Ruth and brash New Yorker Jeff explored their feelings about God, race, sex, and life -- and an enduring friendship was begun.
Over the next thirty years, this long-distance bond sustained Ruth and Jeff through love affairs and heartbreak, social change and disillusionment, divorce and the loss of a cherished friend. As their letters chart their passage from youth to middle age, their memoir captures not just the hopes of an era yearning for revolution and the soul of a country on the brink of change, but also the essence of being bright, young, and passionate. Sharp, funny, and true, here is a mirror for a generation -- both then and now.
Customer Reviews:
Funny. Sad. Uplifting. A treat........2006-07-08
I've read this book 5 times. Jeff is a funny literate wordsmith. Ruth is a poet. Both are truthtellers. I never get tired of reading this book.
Too slow paced ..........2006-07-05
I thought Jeff's writings were very good but Ruth's were boring and difficult to get through. I skipped most of hers. The concept of the story is great but the pace is too slow and it didn't hold my intererst, but I did manage to get through the whole thing.
Disappointing.......2002-05-05
I had been looking forward to reading this book, but after the first hundred pages I abandoned it. Great concept, catchy title, but Ruth and Jeff's lives simply weren't very interesting to me.
Read this excellent memoir!.......2001-06-08
Some books burn themselves into your brain like acid through metal, and this is one of them, a sweet-sour, moving, good-hearted, soulful account of a long friendship, complete with warts and blisters, and partings and loss and reunion. It takes us through the comet-like end of the sixties and through the profane years of the Vietnam experience and up to time present, a story so stuffed with accurate observation there are times you'll think - Yeah, this is what I remember from those days, this is what it was like, I remember when people felt strongly about politics and had a vision of America, and how easily this vision was discarded in the cynicism that culminated in the callous administration of GW Bush. This book shows you the curve, the way we fell from those hippy-happy days, days of promise and light, and love. But this is an upbeat book, this isn't some diatribe against the dark: this is a song about love and friendship and what these things really mean - politicians come and go, thank the stars, but friendship and love endure...Read this lovely work and remember that the heart is what matters.
A parable of culture.......2001-05-12
Younger Than That Now is a wonderful book, and much more than a saga of the 'sixties. It's a beautifully written, honest and moving story of two seemingly different people who achieve unity by struggling to understand each other and how they grow and change as a result. Ruth and Jeff pull no punches in their stories, and they come across with all the foibles that make up human nature, and in doing so, inspire the reader to see that there are no mistakes in life, just lessons. And even more than that, the book is a parable of the evolution of culture, and ultimately civilization as we see that how we affect each other as we negotiate the minefields of youth, relationships and politics can help us build a life we feel proud of.

Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting.......2001-10-31
I have a very annoying habit of getting books like this, without actually having read or seen the source material. Why? Well I am an RPG freak and like ideas for settings.
Demon City, has a very interesting concept. That of a small city which becomes a nexus of supernatural evil, right in the middle of modern urban civilization. Which would make for an interesting setting, if you could figure out how to get your characters to actually WANT to go into a place like that time and time again. The basic story is, this Dark Wizard, made this big Earthquake in the Toyko district of Shinjuku. Which opened up these strange cracks in the ground (Which are later found out to form a pentagram) that run the entire length of Shinjuku. Soon after Demons start to run around killing people in the city. Soon Shinjuku is abandoned, as the evil Demons tend not to cross out of Shinjuku. Flash forward a few years, with a Presidents daughter getting lost in this city. A young hero comes in to save her, runs into more good guys and the afore mentioned Dark Wizard (Who just happens to be completeing a ritual begun all those years ago with the Earthquake), and in the end a titanic clash of good versus evil begins.
The game rules are very good in my opinion. The "Tri-Stat System" is simple, and works well. Many new rules are given to create Shinjuku style heros, with fun Martial Arts rules. Also rules are given to create Demons of any discription. Many examples of each type of character are given within the book. Lastly there is some good idea about how to incorperate Shinjuku into any sort of campaign, and some really nice art.
Basically if you are looking for a dark "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" style RPG this is for you. If you are looking for a "Resident Evil" style RPG, with more of a focus on Demons rather than zombie mutants, this is for you. If you thought the movie kicked butt (Who knows, maybe it did I have never seen it), then this book is for you.

Laptops--call them notebooks, portable computers, or whatever else you like--are tightly engineered items. It's hard to get all the required components to obey stringent performance and power-management requirements, and still fit into a small case. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish. One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop. That's the message the reader takes away from Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. It's not Mueller's fault that such computers are hard to do much with, and that your best upgrade procedure is often a visit to an auction site.
That said, Mueller does a great job of explaining how laptops work--how the engineers went about cramming all those heat-generating components into those miniature chassis in the first place. He also explains a lot of interesting component theory, such as how magnetic hard drives store data and how various DVD standards differ. The information makes for good reading, and comes in handy when you're shopping. He also demonstrates his skill--long well-reputed among builders and repairers of desktop machines--in teaching diagnostics. He explains, for example, how to test a laptop power supply, and why you should consider it a prime suspect in a malfunctioning computer even if the LEDs come on and the cooling fan spins. A CD-ROM features videos that show disassembly procedures--a strategy that works better than photographs and numbered steps. --David Wall
Topics covered: How portable computers work (and sometimes fail to work), and how to diagnose their woes. Sections address general troubleshooting concepts, system disassembly, and various subsystems such as memory, CPU, storage, and video. Coverage of PCMCIA (PC Card) is particularly good.
Book Description
Scott Mueller has gone where no computer book author has gone before right past all the warranty stickers, the hidden screws, and the fear factor to produce a real owner's manual that every laptop owner should have on his desk. Upgrading and Repairing Laptops, Second Edition shows the upgrades users can perform, the ones that are better left to the manufacturer, and how to use add-on peripherals to make the most of a laptop. This second edition has been updated to include:
- The latest processors and motherboards
- Complete assembly and disassembly information
- Updated memory standards
- Upgrading your hard drive to increase performance
- Changes in networking and firewalls
The included DVD contains one-of-a-kind video showing just what's inside a portable PC. If you have ever wondered what goes on inside your portable PC, how to upgrade/repair it, or how to live on the road with it, this is the one must-have book of the year!
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference!.......2007-03-20
This book is an excellent tool to have on hand for anyone even remotely interested in working on laptops, whether for a living or just because your personal machine is out of warranty.
Very thorough, it informs you without talking down to you on numerous topics relating to laptops, from where most laptops are built, the components inside, specific things to look for when purchasing, and how to fix it if a problem occurs.
The laptop bible.......2007-01-10
Ive been building and reparing my own PCs for the last 5 yers. thanks to Scott Mullers books. He is the most direct to the point and clear author in this field. Ive trashed 3 other books before coming across Scott.
Upgrading and Repairing Laptop Computers.......2006-01-21
This book is very very Stupid
Libro completamente inutil
A very big book..........2005-07-05
This is one of the most misnamed books I've ever read, although "Upgrading and Repairing Laptops" is probably a better title than "Just About Everything Relating To Computer Hardware, Up To And Sometimes Including The Operating System, Focusing On But Not Limited To Laptops". There really is that much information contained in this book.
Unfortunately it is not possible to recommend the book based on the title or the information on the back cover as the 'upgrading' and 'repairing' and to a lesser extent 'laptop' keywords are misleading. It does contain an astounding amount of information of the inner workings of computers, but there is simply too much additional information to say that it is about the topics mentioned. They are more a side note than the main focus. The information constantly refers back to laptops, but again is too far ranging to say that laptops are the primary topic.
That said, the information is broad, concise, structured and obtainable. If you're interested in the deep mysteries of computer hardware this is a great resource including in-depth discussions on processors, motherboards (and chip sets), memory, storage (including CD and DVD media formats) and just about everything else. Just be aware of what the book covers before purchasing it.
Don't waste your money.......2005-05-29
Modern word processor let people produce books quickly by copy-and-paste. As commented by an earlier reviewer, who gives one star for the book, this is a typical example. Amazon should allow the reviewer to give 0 star, which I think this book deserves.
In my view, the main difficulty in reparing and upgrading a laptop is disasseble it. Once it is taking apart, nearly everyone with some experience in playing desktop computers would know what to do next. However, this book and the companion disk do a very poor job in this. It shows how to diassemble an IBM notebook, which is perhaps the easierest to disasseble. I hope to see the author to show at least one example from a few major vendors, such as Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, Acer. Unfortunately, it told us to get service manuals. If this is the advice, why this book is written?
