Book Description
As mayor of Indianapolis, Stephen Goldsmith saw firsthand that urban renewal begins with residents claiming responsibility for the future of their neighborhoods. In "Putting Faith in Neighborhoods," Goldsmith explains how Indianapolis invented a national model for creating vibrant urban centers through encouraging citizenship and engaging of faith-based organizations. He argues that social pathologies are best confronted not by large programs administered by government, but by citizens actively engaged in making their communities safer, more compassionate and more productive.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2002-10-03
An excellent book for those interested in helping their communities. I would suggest that every mayor, governor, council person, pastor, teacher, director or consultant read this book!
This book examines the importance of all non-profits, religious organizations and government agencies working together to make a change in their community.
Leadership.......2002-04-30
Steve Goldsmith shows us that the involvement of faith-based organizations in urban neighborhoods does not damage or infringe upon the relationship between church and state. Instead, he provides a logical argument for how local neighborhood churches can lead the process for neighborhood re-transformation. Often, it is the neighborhood church that provides the only symbol of hope for those in need, and the only resource for individuals who need support to overcome serious social problems. A must read for all urban mayors. Actually, a must read for all those who are trying to make a difference in urban neighborhoods.
Steven Goldsmith Review.......2002-04-25
This book provides tangible evidence that local citizens are best able to solve local problems. It also shows why neighborhood churches can play an important role in these efforts. The book is a quick read and can serve as a guide for people who want to get more involved in improving their communities.
It Takes a Neighborhood.......2002-04-24
Mr. Goldsmith obviously has an excellent grasp of what it takes to make a modern American city work. He does not lose sight of noble dreams and goals, yet manages to remain firmly rooted in the realities and challenges of urban life. He provides inspiration and hope to those who feel overwhelmed by the "bigness" of cities and government. He conveys the message that individuals do count and that they can make a difference, and even provides a blue print for how to organize the effort. The most important aspect of this book is that this guy is not simply espousing another theory. He's actually done it and seen it work! This book should be required reading for all mayors.
A road map to success.......2002-04-24
In his new book "Putting Faith in Neighborhoods," former Indianapolis Mayor Steven Goldsmith details the less visible but perhaps most valuable legacy of his administration: neighborhood renewal. As mayor, Mr. Goldsmith worked with grass roots organizations and neighborhood groups to find workable solutions to the nagging problems that often plague our cities. In this book Goldsmith outlines the steps that were so successful during his administration. I would recommend this book to any not-for- profit or community groups looking for a road map for making their own search for local solutions a success.

Book Description
The Management of Labour analyses the policies and practices of Australian employers throughout the twentieth century, emphasising the links between enterprise-level initiatives and the broader environment of product and labour markets, government, arbitration tribunals, trade unions and employer groups. Particular emphasis is placed on developments in employer practice during the last twenty years and the extent to which contemporary changes have followed earlier patterns of labour management. Such a history not only provides a gauge by which to assess the impact of current reforms, but also highlights the danger of repeating the failures of the past. Management has become an increasingly popular area of research and inquiry in Australia. An ever expanding literature exists on personnel and human resource management, job redesign and new production techniques. Importantly however, much of this literature is either in the form of overseas-inspired, prescriptive texts, or investigations of the most recent developments in 'leading edge' firms. The historical development of Australian management's labour policies and practices remains an unexplored area. The basic argument of this book is that an historical understanding of Australian employer practice is essential if one is to make sense of contemporary developments in the management of industrial relations. This book provides a valuable source for anyone interested in understanding contemporary changes in Australian industrial relations and employer practice.

Humorous invective against feminist insanity........2007-08-18
A lot of this book is just griping. The ever-changing nature, and excessive expense, of women's fashions is ridiculed. The authors complain that anorexia and bulimia are blamed on women trying to look good for men, even though no man is lusting after skeletons; it is women who have promoted the anorexic as a beauty ideal. Also pointed out is the well-known trend that women don't go after the most demanding jobs and then complain that they aren't being paid or respected equally.
Numerous examples are given of the feminist inability to decide whether women are equal in ability to men or need special protection, as in the demands for adjusted standards so that more women can be firefighters or soldiers, or the increasingly irrational date rape laws, which can be interpreted to mean that any woman can retroactively decide that she didn't consent even though she did. (This has always seemed intolerably male chauvinist to me; it's basically feminists promoting the idea that women remain legal minors, unable to be responsible for their own actions.)
There are many complaints in this book about how equality of the sexes is applied according to the convenience of the women in question. It's all right for women to make anti-male jokes or for advertisements to present men as sex objects, but the reverse is not. The book suggests that we might apply equality of the sexes by abolishing "women and children to the lifeboats first", men giving up their seat on a bus for women, and military women being excused from combat. This implicitly brings up something I've noticed a good bit in men's antifeminist blogs: the way women have been treating men, claiming equality while demanding special treatments and giving nothing in return, has many men resolving that they will never serve in the military or police. Why should they risk their own safety to protect women, considering the way women treat them? Our society needs to take note of this: our freedom and safety depend on motivating men to defend it.
The chapters on marriage and divorce cover material which will be familiar to many readers, but since the problems still exist, they need to be gone over again. Essentially, divorce law is criminally unfair to men, allowing women to abandon their husbands while depriving them of property and children.
The book also points out that female violence against men is treated by the popular media as acceptable or even cute, while the reverse is treated as heinous, with the implication that men are constantly on the verge of going berserk and menacing women. (This is only true in schools, where the female authority figures, namely teachers, actively encourage the little boys to beat up on the little girls, in the name of "equality" - or more likely, to create the next generation of feminists by ensuring that little girls learn to hate males. Grown men, who are not under the authority of a female teacher, rarely act violent towards women.) Movies like "Flashdance" and "Mystic Pizza" show women vandalizing their boyfriends' property because they think, incorrectly, that the boyfriends are cheating on them. They don't even verify this before committing the vandalism. Worse are movies like "Thelma and Louise", which glorify the murder of men by women. Imagine if this were reversed, how would the world react?
The book also points out a fact that few people want to face: that the majority of domestic abuse is committed by women against men. Women are more likely than men to assault or murder their spouses, though you'd never know it from the Lifetime Channel.
There are numerous facts and figures cited in this book, but most of the case against women is anecdotal and the tone is casual and humorous.

Book Description
Why is it that Western science evolved as a thoroughly male-dominated enterprise? As philosopher Sandra Harding has noted, "women have been more systematically excluded from doing serious science than performing any other social activity except, perhaps, frontline warfare." In A World Without Women, David F. Noble provides the first full-scale investigation of the origins and implications of the masculine culture of Western science and technology, and in the process offers some surprising revelations. Noble begins by showing that, contrary to the widely held notion that the culture of learning in the West has always excluded women--an assumption that rests largely upon the supposed legacy of ancient Greece--men did not thoroughly dominate intellectual life until the beginning of the second millennium of the Christian era. At this time science and the practices of higher learning became the exclusive province of the newly celibate Christian clergy, whose ascetic culture denied women a place in any scholarly enterprise. By the twelfth century, papal reform movements had all but swept away the material and ideological supports of future female participation in the world of learning; as never before, women were on the outside looking in. Noble further demonstrates that the clerical legacy of a world without women remained more or less intact through the Reformation, and permeated the emergant culture of science. A World Without Women finally points to a dread of women at the core of modern scientific and technological enterprise, as these disciplines work to deprive one-half of humanity of its role in production (as seen in the Industrial Revolution's male appropriation of labor) and reproduction as well (the age-old quest for an artificial womb). It also makes plain the hypocrisy of a community that can honor a female scientist with a bronze bust, as England's Royal Society did for Mary Somerville in the mid-nineteenth century, yet deny her entry to the very meeting hall in which it enjoyed pride of place. An important and often disturbing book, A World Without Women is essential reading for anyone concerned not only about the world of science, but about the world that science has made.

One of Deborah Tannen's top 10 on women's issues.......2006-03-27
The Washington Post (Sunday, March 19, 2006) asked Deborah Tannen -- the author of "You Just Don't Understand," "Talking from 9 to 5", and "You're Wearing That?" -- to gather a shelf of her favorite books on women's issues. Her first choice was this book. This is what she said about it:
When I first read this book, I could talk of little else for a long, long while. Noble shows that the exclusion of women from Western scientific and educational institutions was not the inevitable outgrowth of historical forces. Rather, it came about because early universities were seminaries and early scientists were either clergy or steeped in a Christian clerical culture. The Latin church, with its hierarchical structure, used the stigmatization of women in its power struggle to gain control of the monasteries in which women and men prayed and studied as equals in the first millennium of the Christian era.
the common histories of the church and academic science.......1999-04-30
This is a historical examination of the inter-relationship between the history of the Catholic church and of academic science. The theme is that the tendecies towards misogyny and towards expecting monastic devotion to one's work can both be traced back to the clerical origin of academic study.

Author John Vlissides is a member of the so-called Gang of Four: writers of the bestselling and influential Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, a catalog of 23 design patterns. This more recent book delivers considerable insight on using and applying software design patterns--reusable designs for common programming problems--and compiles the author's further experience with patterns.
Pattern Hatching first defends the patterns movement by offering 10 myths about patterns, which provide a framework for thinking about the role of patterns in today's software. (While not a silver bullet, the author argues for the continued importance of patterns throughout software engineering.) The next section shows how to apply several patterns (drawn from the original 23) in a file system; the author uses and describes common patterns such as the Composite, Visitor, Proxy, and Singleton. To help illustrate how to use patterns and how they work together, the author also provides C++ source code for the designs in the book.
Part of the fun of reading Pattern Hatching is getting the author's insight on the origin of thinking about patterns, including several patterns that were actually left out of the original book, such as the Generation Gap pattern and the Multicast pattern.
For readers who are familiar with Design Patterns, Pattern Hatching is a lively behind-the-scenes look at one of the most important recent developments in software design. --Richard Dragan
Book Description
This succinct, example-driven book empowers software developers who are using design patterns, arguably today's most popular object-oriented programming concept. Design Patterns' co-author John Vlissides blends his intimate knowledge of the pattern development process with practical techniques for better pattern application. The result is a thought-provoking guide that will help you improve your next software design by putting patterns to work successfully.
Pattern Hatching demystifies the fine points of patterns, placing them in the broader context of basic object-oriented design principles. It dispels many of the misconceptions about patterns that have spread in the software development community-clearly articulating what patterns are and how they ease the development process. The book also presents themes and variations on several established patterns, yielding many new insights. With the instruction in this book, you will become better able to tailor patterns to the design problem at hand.
Customer Reviews:
good while it lasts.......2007-02-20
This is a collection of the author's columns of the same name from C++ Report. This is not a tutorial; you need to be familiar with the original patterns from the GoF book, and the more you like C++, the better.
The book takes you through a couple of extended examples, including an abstraction of a Unix-style file system, slowly building up functionality, and demonstrating how to introduce patterns and choose which one to use. If you're looking for some examples of how to use patterns, along the lines of Design Patterns Explained, this is one of the best books you could hope to read. There's also a couple of non-GoF patterns. In particular, the chapter that details some of the discussion between the GoF on the merits of the proposed Multicast pattern is a very illuminating expose of pattern thinking.
While it's unclear who wrote which bit of the original GoF book, from reading Pattern Hatching, it's an enormous pity Vlissides wasn't handed the lion's share of the writing task. Where the GoF book can be stodgy and opaque, Pattern Hatching is informal and conversational. Vlissides clearly had a love of writing, and he gives advice on writing style for patterns in the final chapter.
A caveat is the C++-centric approach of the book. It no doubt made a lot of sense in the context of the original articles in a publication devoted to that language. Non C++ users should be warned that a large chunk of the book considers handling memory management with singleton - you may not find much of value.
And as other reviewers have noted, this is a slim book of 150 pages. If you have to pay more than £10 for it, you probably will feel a bit ripped off.
That said, the material that is here is very good indeed, especially if you're a C++ user. If you can find an affordable copy, you should definitely get it.
A great follow-up to the GoF patterns book.......2007-01-10
John Vlissides, one of the authors of the book that was the germination and incubation of the topic of patterns in computing, once again plucks a golden egg from his fertile imagination. As he states clearly in the introduction, this book is designed as a supplement to the ground- breaking "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object- Oriented Software", commonly referred to as the Gang of Four(GoF) book. The examples in this book are well chosen, and many people will find this book to be a good introduction to the concept of patterns in software construction. The writing in this book is also more fluid than the original design-patterns book.
Exploring software patterns is in many ways a search for the equivalent of the Platonic ideal on forms in philosophy, which is one of the reasons why there is such a cantankerous and sometimes dismissive debate concerning true value of patterns. Chapter 1 is devoted to dealing with some of this, with the bulk of the material being a statement/response to each of the, "Top Ten Misconceptions" concerning software patterns. One point is clear from this chapter, and that is how ill defined the notion of patterns really is. This is not altogether surprising considering how recently the field was conceived, but disturbing because software is such serious stuff. If you wish to become part of the debate, send an email message to patterns-discussions-request@cs.uiec.edu . The body of the message should contain the single word, (without quotes) "Subscribe."
The fundamental topic of chapter 2 is using patterns to design a hierarchical file
system, a topic even computer novices know something about. The first pattern introduced in the solution is composite. Because the context of use is so familiar to anyone who has done serious coding, the definition and purpose of the composite pattern are almost completely clear without having to go to the GoF book. The language of demonstration is C++ and one additional skill that will be very helpful is some knowledge of OMT- style diagrams. Additional GoF patterns used to complete the design of the file system are the proxy, visitor, template, singleton and mediator patterns. There are only 23 patterns in the GoF book, and this "simple" example demonstrates how to use one-forth of them.
Several years ago when I was grinding my way through the GoF book for the first time, I considered the singleton pattern to be the simplest of the 23 listed in the book. The intent of the singleton is extremely simple:
Ensure a class only has one instance, and provide a global point of access.
It seemed almost trivial to understand and implement.
In chapter three, Vlissides presents additional insights into the singleton that serves as a stiff reminder of the following maxim that paraphrases Shakespeare:
There are more things in your patterns sir, than are contained in your concepts
Patterns are dynamic, flexible entities, and we are only beginning to understand the potential benefits and risks inherent in their use. The other patterns expanded upon in the chapter are observer, visitor, and memento. A new pattern, the generation gap, is also introduced.
Chapter four is devoted to the multicast pattern, one that did not appear in the original GoF book. The style of presentation in this case takes us behind the scenes a bit. It points out that establishing the existence of a pattern, like many other things, is based on a bit of constructive chaos.
In Chapter 5, which is the final chapter, the seven habits of effective pattern writers are listed and described in detail. Clearly, the first is most important, although in the modern world of hetic-devolopment schedules, the least one used is: Habit 1: Taking time to reflect.
In closing, this book is without question a significant advancement on the original GoF book, and so well done that beginners can start their study of patterns with it. It may be the best book of patterns that will be published this year.
Published in Journal of Object-Oriented Programming, reprinted with permission.
Great insights.......2005-10-25
I liked this book very much, especially the first part, where the usage of some of the GoF patterns is shown in the practical example of designing an OO file system model. Also, it was interesting to read the discussion the GoF had in the time of writing Design Patterns book about Multicast pattern and whether it's a separate pattern or a special case of the Observer.
All in all, quite interesting reading. There's also some useful information for the sofware developers who want to document their own patterns.
The only thing I didn't really like about the book is that it's too short.
My coments on the book .......2004-09-29
A very helpful book especially very after GoF?s one reading . However it has a lot of C++ specific places, java developers will find the book also interesting :). It's written by one from the gang - John M. Vlissides. First part of the book gives a glance view of applying several GoF patterns in dummy simple file system building (Composite , Proxy, Visitor, Singleton, Mediator ) . The author also introduces two new patterns which don't mentioned in the Design Pattern (Generation Gap, Multicast ) in the next parts .
Blown away........2004-06-06
I was taken back by this gem. Vlissides starts of by dismissing all of the false claims and rumors about design patterns. He then proceeds to take you through the creation of a basic file system, explaining things like what a 'mkdir' type of program should do, and how to impement it. During this whole process, he presents various design patterns taken from the GoF book in a real context.
Don't buy this one alone. This is meant to be a supplement to 'Design Patterns'.
