5 out of 5 stars An excellent resume guide.......2007-06-12

I just reviewed more than two dozen resume books seeking clear guidance in one dynamic and informative package for students launching their first career search adventures. This book is ideal. It's also a great guide for anyone at any stage of their career.
Excellent examples and reasoning. Clear, concise, and immediately useful applications. Powerful reminders. All packaged in a compelling format. And framed in a positive, can-do tone.
I've taught and trained for more than 25 years and find this book ideal for developing superb resumes.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of the better ones.......2005-02-13

At first glance, this book looked very helpful. But then I actually followed the book and the resume I ended up with was VERY cluttered. So are most of the examples in the book, which all follow the same look: very little white space, too much information crammed in, overuse of bullets - all leading to a single-spaced, bullet-heavy, text-intensive resume. This book seems to assume that recruiters and others will take the time to read the whole thing when often the opposite is true. Just a glance at the layout may be enough to put them off instead. I just can't recommend it when there are books like "Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead" by Martin Yate or "The Damn Good Resume" by Yana Parker (which got me good jobs for years).

      Book Description

Tracing the deep roots of women's activism in America, Anne Boylan explores the flourishing of women's volunteer associations in the decades following the Revolution. She examines the entire spectrum of early nineteenth-century women's groups--Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish; African American and white; middle and working class--to illuminate the ways in which race, religion, and class could bring women together in pursuit of common goals or drive them apart.

Boylan interweaves analyses of more than seventy organizations in New York and Boston with the stories of the women who founded and led them. In so doing, she provides a new understanding of how these groups actually worked and how women's associations, especially those with evangelical Protestant leanings, helped define the gender system of the new republic. She also demonstrates as never before how women in leadership positions combined volunteer work with their family responsibilities, how they raised and invested the money their organizations needed, and how they gained and used political influence in an era when women's citizenship rights were tightly circumscribed.

We have a love/hate relationship with sports cliches. Although we complain about them, we also can't communicate without them. That's because they alway seem to fit. They have become as much a part of sports as the games themselves. This book lists 1,771 cliches in 87 unique areas. There are cliches from the winning and losing locker rooms, on officiating, coaching, trades, fighting, rookies, quarterbacks, etc. Whether you are an avid sports fan, a casual one, or simply a boo bird, the cliches in this book will have you buzzing in your seats without coming back to haunt you.

5 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is.......2005-02-08

Let's face it, this book is not great literature, it's a list. Of sports cliches. And, if you're amused by all things sports, as I am, you'll like this book. It arranges them by sport and other topics (business, money, parts of the body) and I got a chuckle out of it. I admit I'd never heard some of them before, but most of them feel "like home." My young son enjoyed it as he wasn't familiar with a lot of the cliches and we spent an afternoon going thru the book together.

5 out of 5 stars Above the Rim.......2005-02-03

Just as the sports cliche "they came in well prepared" goes, I'm gonna be ready for any lull in the game. My friends and me can use the book to see how many basketball cliches have been used already in the game.

          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-02-03

My husband and I really enjoyed reading through this book. As hockey fans, we especially enjoyed that section. We've been missing the NHL season and it was great to get back in the game again. I would highly recommend this book for any other NHL fans out there experiencing withdrawl symtoms!

          4 out of 5 stars Touchdown!.......2005-02-03

"Heading into next week's showdown" I just bought copies for prizes for my superbowl party - I know it will be a "slam dunk."

5 out of 5 stars A fun book for sports fans.......2005-01-06

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is a "sports nut". He loved it. He said it took him back to his youth when he first became aware of how common cliches were. He sat down with his wife and had fun explaining what many of the cliches meant and his recollections about where they came from. I will remember this book and purchase it again for other sports fans I know.

          5 out of 5 stars easy melodies.......2007-02-14

I'm old enough to remember all the melodies; so, I just have to learn to read the music. All of Jumpin' Jim's ukulele songbooks are comfortable to read.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for easy Uke! Beatles! .......2007-02-08

I recently started playing the Uke, and found this book early in my Ukulele adventure. It is chock-full of Beatles tunes, and even has a friendly intro by George Harrison, who helped Jumpin' Jim with some of the arrangements. (George thinks everyone should own a Uke, because they are so fun and easy to take everywhere you go!).

Most of the arrangements are pretty easy, and set in chords that are easy to sing along with. I have several other Jumpin' Jim books, and they are all great, but this is my favorite!

          5 out of 5 stars Groovy Man!.......2007-01-09

There is no way you can play a uke' and not have this book!! The songs in this book compelled my 17 year old daughter to snatch my uke' and learn
to play these fun songs. Her favorite: "Here Comes The Sun". My friends love to sing along whenever I pull this book out. Really!

5 out of 5 stars Get ready for big fun!.......2006-08-16

The songs in this little book will keep you strummin' and singin' for ... well, maybe forever! I was introduced to Jim's books through his Ukulele Gems and Ukulele Favorites titles, both of which have lots of wonderful jazz standards arranged for this delightful instrument. '60s Uke-In moves things up a few decades with a very cool collection of memorable tunes that will delight both the player and the listener. As another reviewer said, maybe not for the absolute beginner, but if you know even a handful of basic chords and are willing to put in a bit of practice time (makes perfect, so that say) you'll quickly be knocking these songs out and amazing friends and family. A very good song book to have along on camping trips, around the fir, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Not for beginners........2005-09-26

I disagree with the previous reviewer. As a beginner with no musical backround I can tell you the songs in this book (about one third of them Beatles tunes) are too difficult for me. I also own two other Jim Beloff books (Camp Uke and Ukulele Country) which are much more my speed. Never-the-less this is still an excellent book with a lot of fun songs. The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is because it is not much use to me now. I would say this book is for intermediate players.

            Book Description

How does television influence people? "Cultivation" research examines the relationship between how much television people watch and what they believe: avid viewers' beliefs are very different from those of occasional viewers. James Shanahan and Michael Morgan, leading scholars in this field, explore the differences in viewers' beliefs on issues such as violence, sex roles and political attitudes. Their compelling account, the first book-length study of this important and controversial area, will be of interest to students and scholars in communication, sociology, political science and psychology.

            Download Description

Television and its Viewers reviews 'cultivation' research, which investigates the relationship between exposure to television and beliefs about the world. James Shanahan and Michael Morgan, both distinguished researchers in this field, scrutinize cultivation through detailed theoretical and historical explication, critical assessments of methodology, and a comprehensive 'meta-analysis' of twenty years of empirical results. They present a sweeping historical view of television as a technology and as an institution. Shanahan and Morgan's study looks forward as well as back, to the development of cultivation research in a new media environment. They argue that cultivation theory offers a unique and valuable perspective on the role of television in twentieth-century social life. Television and its Viewers, the first book-length study of its type, will be of interest to students and scholars in communication, sociology, political science and psychology and contains an introduction by the seminal figure in this field, George Gerbner.

Raised by smart, language-using wolves, far from humans, then brought back to the court of Hawk Haven, young Firekeeper had to learn to cope with human society. Fortunately, for one raised amidst intelligent pack animals, the intrigues of humans are neither complex nor wholly unfamiliar. Now Melina Shield, the beautiful, unscrupulous, and thoroughly discredited sorceress whose power-hungry intrigues have already made so much trouble for Firekeeper, has once more used her power to cloud men's minds, and has induced the ruler of New Kelvin to marry her. This is bad news on a lot of fronts. It's particularly bad news for Firekeeper. Melina hasn't abandoned her schemes to gain power through the use of forbidden ancient sorcery. And the leaders of the royal beasts who watch over this world have given Firekeeper--and her intelligent wolf companion Blind Seer--the responsibility for stopping her.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-02-20

Well written with great character development. Am currently re-reading it in anticipation of starting the next two books in this series. I'm amazed at how well it holds my attention the second time through. The wealth of details which were forgotten by me make it a great read again. One of the top ten authors in my book.

3 out of 5 stars A good series, but treading water in this one.......2005-11-16

Firekeeper is back in her third adventure. The strengths of the earlier volumes, strong characters in an interesting setting, are back, but the 'been there, done that' feeling in this book is too strong to recommend it for me.

In this book, Firekeeper returns to the same place (the capital of the neighboring kingdom of New Kelvin) with pretty much the same companions, to fight the same villain as in the previous installment. Why Firekeeper and her companions are able to return safely to New Kelvin when the authorities there know that they are responsible for the death of a Kelvinese and have guessed that they stole priceless artifacts is never adequately explained, but exactly what they plan to do when they get there isn't very well explained either.

A subplot involving a new human settlement at the site of the old Bardenville settlement that Firekeeper came from has potential, but doesn't really emerge. It seems to be intended mainly to set up a villain for a future sequel.

There is some interesting exploration of the culture and politics of New Kelvin. But the characters don't advance very much at all. Overall, I found this book mostly a disappointment after enjoying Lindskold's earlier work.

4 out of 5 stars It drags a bit, but great story anyway!.......2004-08-31

OK, it could have been paced faster; some times I just wanted to yell get on with it! Yet, in the end the suspense was good and the ending great; setting up for the next Firekeeper yarn. Will Elise marry Doc? What about the evil queen in the Isles? All sorts of stuff can happen. She had to leave some stuff for the next book.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on Reading. . ........2003-11-14

I'm having a hard time deciding whether I liked the first book in this series or this one, but so far all the books are wonderful.
Part of the conflict in this book revolves around the villain, Melina Shield, who has just been wedded to the monarch of New Kelvin. The other major conflict that progresses the plot is the madness of Citrine, which presumalby will be cured if she can confront her mother, who caused her to be traumatized to the point of insanity. All of the main characters from the first two books are there to contribute (on varying levels; Sir Jared and Elise hardly do anything).
There have been complaints that there is little character deleopment in this book. This isn't entirely true. Firekeeper has some very complicated mental issues to deal with, Edlin matures a lot, and Citrine learns how she can fit herself into the world.
Overall, this is a true page-turner, with all the riveting plot twists and wonderful prose you can expect from Jane Lindskold. If another one of these books comes out, I'd definetly read it!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Adventure.......2003-10-07

Dragons continues the story of Melina vs. Firekeeper, but as with all the Firekeeper novels, it's more than just "good vs. evil." It's also about levels and layers of political intrigue - and this time, not just between the assorted human kingdoms. The wise wolves that raised Firekeeper have kingdoms of their own, and now their council is getting into the act. Once again, the plot twists and turns unexpectedly, with the fates of individual characters and whole kingdoms in doubt up to the last breathlessly turned page.

Dragonlance is the classic 80's campaign for D&D. It is the occasion for you to enjoy this beautiful saga.

Dragons of Despair is the beginning if the saga. Heroes gather after long wanderings at Solace, the small city build of their childhood. They're going to meet 2 new fellows who bring the first clue about the lost gods of the world. An incredible journey should conduct the PCs to the sunken city of Xak Tsaroth. At the same time, tales of war and slaughter come from north along with streams of refugees. Rumors tell that Dragons are rising in the skies again...

5 out of 5 stars Lavish introduction to the Dragonlance Saga.......2000-04-30

The DL series was a huge leap forward for TSR - these modules featured a new emphasis on drama and storytelling that made the gaming MUCH more fun and involved for the PCs and the DM. Of course, at heart, being TSR modules from the 80s, they're still dungeon crawls! In this chapter, the heroes must come to grips with a grim new world where dragons no longer exist, gold is worthless, and the gods themselves have forsaken mortals, and clerics are powerless... a classic of dark adventure for levels 4-6.

4 out of 5 stars Toadkiller Dawg says: A Handy Collection for Low-Level PCs.......1999-08-31

Dungeons of Despair is an anthology of seven scenarios written for low-level PCs and previously published in Dungeon magazine. Three of the scenarios have a strong Celtic/British Isles flavor to them and this may be a plus if they are to be used for the same group of PCs but will require some revision if the campaign culture is markedly different. Be warned that at least one of the scenarios relies heavily on Celtic lore to make the plot work.

The quality of the stories is uneven, but none of the chapters could be described as less than average. "The Moor-Tomb Map", a classic low-level treasure hunt adventure, is probably the best of the lot, but Willie Walsh's "Cauldron of Plenty" and "Caermor" by Nigel D. Findley have much to recommend. The remaining stories could use stronger development, one is really no more than a random encounter in the woods, but two of them manage to deal with unusual monsters in interesting ways and there is an excellent description of the personality and powers of the boggle.

The scenarios are all fairly short and, with the exception of "Moor-Tomb", can probably be completed in a single gaming session. Anyone that DMs for players with low-level PCs will likely find the product useful, assuming that is, that they don't have the originals lying around somewhere in a stack of old Dungeon magazines.

            3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......1999-04-15

This book is nice to have around but its not a must for DMs. The adventure's seem meaningless and it's probably not worth getting if you have a good imagination.

5 out of 5 stars David Weeks... Book Review.......2002-11-21

So, you have flexed your credit card, and purchased (or upgraded to) Microsoft Office v. X for Macintosh. After all, it is the Mac equivalent of the biggest, baddest, most popular office productivity suite in the PC world. You come home from your dealer, or get the package from the delivery truck driver, and rip the box open, only to find a CD-ROM disk and packing slip.

                That's all.

"There's gotta be more," you say, as you rummage around in the suspiciously slim box. Unfortunately, the User Guides that you look for are nowhere to be found. You install the software, and try out the various parts: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. The on-line Help file answers a few of your questions, but it does nothing to answer the bigger question: "How do I USE this thing?"

Welcome to the Death of Documentation. This phrase, coined by TidBITS publisher Adam Engst, reflects the fact that comprehensive user guides, even for many complex software suites, have become a thing of the past. Paper has been replaced with on-line help. Read the article to get a better feel for the pros and cons of the trend to on-line help.

The yawning gap left by software publishers' failure to provide paper documentation has been well-filled by many book publishers. Buyers spend big bucks to buy software, and then they can't learn how to use it, so they run to buy a book. Tom Negrino, Kirk McElhearn and Kate Binder have the book for you.

Microsoft Office: mac v. X Inside Out is my current recommendation in the Macintosh Office v. X help book category. Covering Word, Entourage, Excel, and PowerPoint, its 975 pages keep it from the "boat-anchor" category (just barely), so you can actually read this from an easy chair. The book is targeted at the Intermediate/Advanced level user, not at the raw Macintosh beginner; it won't tell the newbie how to run a Macintosh. But, if you put this book to good use, you'll have a solid grounding in Office v. X.

A word to the wise: don't feel that you have to read Microsoft Office: mac v. X Inside Out (hereafter referred to as MOIO) from cover to cover, as I did. Users who are upgrading from earlier Office versions will best employ MOIO as a reference book. The excellent index and table of contents make finding particular topics easy, and the material is presented in such a way that small subject areas stand on their own.

My one kvetch with the Word material came from the my reading it from cover to cover, as opposed to using it as a reference to find specific information. I felt the section on Word never really presented the user with the best overall strategy to create a document. Chapter 2 Creating and Managing Documents covers the essentials, but I felt that someone new to Office v. X could use a broader discussion of the ins-and-outs of documents, sections, chapters, master documents, etc, earlier in the book, rather than later.

My experience with the other Office components is minimal, compared to my expertise in Word. Reading the Excel section gave me a great overview of all the powerful features that I never knew how to use. The advanced user will find plenty of detail in MOIO on AppleScripting spreadsheets, and a solid foundation of PivotTable information. The Solver is discussed, but not in great detail.

As I knew virtually nothing about Entourage and Powerpoint before reviewing MOIO, I was glad that I came away with the feeling that I could use the applications after one reading of the book. I might even have to abandon my current calendaring application in favor of Entourage. If I ever get a corporate job, MOIO will help me attain true PowerPoint-jockey status.

While the Office v. X book field is not yet jammed with entries, Negrino, McElhearn, and Binder's Microsoft Office: mac v. X Inside Out will be stiff competition for any new competition. I strongly recommend it for both new Office users, and for upgraders.

                5 out of 5 stars A "Way Cool" book.......2002-08-06

Kirk McElhearn has graciously accepted to work with our MacNut family, so I asked if I could review this Book and Tom Negrino sent it to me (thanks a million Tom!). We do reviews of both hardware and software at http://www.mac-nut.com and a full review of this book will be found there.

Technical books usually take some time to read, but when I got this one, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. No, really! It's that good. My rating for books is based on the number of "dogears" I have put in it after I've finished. I have a lot of dogears in this one.

Kirk said he wrote the Excel section and one of the Word chapters, but I find the whole book to be one of exceptional quality and insight. The writing team really know the product and the Notes, "InsideOuts" and other tips, tricks and workarounds are first rate.

Even though this book provides deep insight into "Office:mac", I see a lot of things I'm eager to try in Office 2001 and Office in the Windows environment - just to see if they work there too.

The Microsofties at Microsoft Press did an excellent job bringing Tom Negrino, Kirk McElhearn and Kate Binder together to bring this tome to light.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
