Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good guide.......2007-04-12

The book had very good examples of resumes and a good step by step process. The worksheets were helpful and provided a good outline to focus my thinking.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference for Executive Resume.......2004-03-07

This is one of the better executive resume reference book I had come across. If you are in the transition to your mid-career, and is having trouble to put your career in a bigger picture so that people can understand, then the author has done a wonderful job in offering you examples and insights on how to put things in order - from an employer perspective.

The only drawback of this book is probably only the 'repetitive' phrases and approaches the author used. The examples in the book, claimed by the author, were real-life examples created either by him or his staff. Therefore, as you read through the book you will find similarities in almost all the resumes. Though this is understandable, I personally think this can be improved somewhat.

In terms of usefulness in refernce, I would have given this a 5-star. In terms of value, I will have to settle for a 4-star rating.

4 out of 5 stars Wish to have more different examples.......2003-11-23

This is one executive resume reference that's consistent. The writer spend a few chapters on resume writing skills and you can find how he walks his talk in the examples that followed. He certainly delivered his message quite clear, and I had certainly benefitted. He is specific in his approach, and he stands by it.

The shortfall I found in this book is that most of the examples are pretty similar. Some of the starting phrases are exactly the same, and you find differences in the job descriptions - this is particularly obvious in the Profile section throughout. Considering these resume is original work by the author (and colleagues), I am not surprised (nor disappointed) though I wish for different examples.

But overall, if you have the patience to read through the begining chapters, you most likely will find it a good reference. Good job.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Business Resumes.......2003-07-23

If you are just starting on your resume or have been working on it for awhile and are stuck, this could help you. There are a lot of great examples in a fairly consistent format. The recommended format is close to what the expensive resume shops recommend--white space, concise, clear wording, chronological format, etc.

Generally the examples are for business executive resumes--CEO, VP, finance, marketing, etc., and the book is an excellent guide to that type of resume, but it won't help much if you are in a technical, non-executive career path.

This book could probably cut ten hours off of the time it takes to prepare a winning resume, so it is well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Much better!.......2003-01-11

This is an excellent book, which incorporates many of the CORRECT techniques to make your resume stand out from the crowd.

As a certified professional, full-time executive resume writing expert, I know that personalized information and details can make all the difference. (NOT to be confused with personal details and information, like hobbies.)

Take care not to copy the resumes in this (or any) too exactly. This makes your resume too "cookie-cutter." It looks just like those created by inexpensive resume writing software (or cheap resume writing services).

As an executive you are certainly looking for a job making more than $75,000 per year. You're attempting to sell a very expensive product of uncertain quality to company management.

This book can help you, but remember that when you are done, you can't afford NOT to have a professional-looking resume and marketing documents with the correct content.

Good Luck with your job campaign...

        Book Description

Work organizations have become a major site of gender politics for professional women and men over the last twenty years. There are more women in senior positions, but increased opportunities have not been gained without psychological consequences. Rather than detail the barriers to women's success, Paula Nicolson examines the problems they can face as a result. She re-examines the ways that patriarchal structures resist women's progress, and how male success has psychological implications for women's sense of subjectivity, self-esteem and gender identity, and how achieving against such odds has an impact on women's everyday lifes.

Gender, Power and Organization is particularly concerned with women who have achieved or aspire to professional power, and the psychological dimension of power for women, men and the organizations in which they work.

                Book Description

"As the backlash against feminist research continues unabated, this important volume signals no retreat. Bringing together the foremost international researchers in the area of violence against women, Researching Sexual Violence Against Women offers excellent assessments of the dimensions of date rape-particularly on college campuses. Reasons why this form of violence against women has provoked such intense responses as well as new methodologies are thoroughly explored. Finally, the work examines the impact this research has on those who do it and calls for more work on women's victimization and the links between it and other forms of discrimination." --Meda Chesney-Lind, Women's Studies Program, University of Hawaii--Manoa A remarkable introduction to research in the field, Researching Sexual Violence Against Women provides cutting-edge information on the various studies conducted on North American campuses. This compelling book not only provides a strong overview of the entire field but also simultaneously offers an answer to backlash critics who claim that feminists exaggerate their statistics. Several of the best-known researchers describe their own work and that of others to illustrate both large-scale and local studies. The contributors also take a compelling look into the emotions of sexual assault research by discussing their own emotional experiences of working with rape research, including experiences of harassment by subjects or disrespect by colleagues. In addition, several scholars peruse empirical and epistemological questions--and arrive at surprising conclusions-on feminist participatory research into lesbian battering, reflexivity in studying prostitutes, the gendered nature of research interviews, and white women studying battered women of color. Including chapters on very hot topics and celebrating feminist research methodology, Researching Sexual Violence Against Women speaks to a broad audience, including researchers, academics, professionals, and students in the areas of interpersonal violence, social work, sociology, criminology, women's studies, psychology, family studies, and counseling as well as college administrators and mental health practitioners.

                    Book Description

The first volume of Women and Work examines differences among women -- as well as differences between men and women -- related to nationality, ethnicity, social class, and sexual preference. Volume One contains an analysis of earnings differentials. It is an exciting discussion illustrating different explanations for this subject. It concludes that despite the fact that women are seen to be making inroads into various professions (such as business, medicine, and the military), many remain in traditionally 'female', low-paying jobs. Research reveals that when women are employed in jobs traditionally associated with men, they usually receive less pay than their male counterparts.

                          Book Description

To be frustrated with society and all of its evils is sometimes a major understatement. To have to breathe the same air as some of these contemptuous individuals is a daunting task. The countless frustrations we go through on a day-to-day basis are all illustrated in this mix of laughter and societal justice. Taken along with us on this wonderful ride are coworkers, strangers and family. All of these characters and more are a part of the experiences of a fallen society and how one woman is worn out with bad manners, bad hair and bad fashion. From minivan-driving, coffee-crazed suburban moms to finding (gasp!) pantyhose paired with open toed shoes, this book will have you cringing with familiarity more than you care to admit. Consider this book a primer for what not to do, wear, or say when in public.

                          Book Description

The definitive history of the first 30 years of heavy metal, containing over 100 interviews with members of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister, Slipknot, Kiss, Megadeth, Public Enemy, Napalm Death, and more.

More than 30 years after Black Sabbath released the first complete heavy metal album, its founder, Ozzy Osbourne, is the star of The Osbournes, TV's favourite new reality show. Contrary to popular belief, headbangers and the music they love are more alive than ever. Yet there has never been a comprehensive book on the history of heavy metal – until now. Featuring interviews with members of the biggest bands in the genre, Sound of the Beast gives an overview of the past 30–plus years of heavy metal, delving into the personalities of those who created it. Everything is here, from the bootlegging beginnings of fans like Lars Ulrich (future founder of Metallica) to the sold–out stadiums and personal excesses of the biggest groups. From heavy metal's roots in the work of breakthrough groups such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to MTV hair metal, courtroom controversies, black metal murderers and Ozzfest, Sound of the Beast offers the final word on this elusive, extreme, and far–reaching form of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Bible for Metal Diehards and Music Fans alike!.......2007-03-31

This is a must read for anyone interested in rock music. It dives deep into the world of heavy metal by interweaving the most obscure with the most transparent. Sound of the Beast connects metal to other underground genres like hardcore punk, thrash and rap, as it thoroughly narrates the history of heavy metal.

For anyone interested in learning about how Celtic Frost connects to Black Flag or the history of black metal versus thrash, it is a must read. For anyone interested in how the Internet has shifted the face of the music industry, it is also a must have.

This book as something for everyone -- part time rock music fans or committed tape traders from the days of yore will both find this book enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars After all, 'art' is so subjective.......2006-12-19

This is about as concise a 'history' of Metal as you are likely to find anywhere. All the favorite bands are here. All the different periods are covered. And yet it's still compact and concise enough to not be boring. Can you imagine long-haired headbangers slogging through a HISTORY book the size of 'War and Peace' without falling asleeep ? This book comes close, but redeems itself through some interesting features, such as interviews with key Metal men and interesting lists and boxes of Metal facts. Some of Dee Snider's insights are priceless.

                          This book has several weaknesses:
                          - Ian Christe seems to be in love with himself and his own writing. He over-indulges in flowery prose, seemingly using grand words just for the sake of seeming clever. Come on. Sometimes this seems like an English Literature essay, when it really should be just a passionate account from one Metal-head to another.
                          - Ian Christe also fails to hide his own biases and prejudices in musical tastes. It's so obvious that he is a fan of Black Sabbath, Metallica and Black Metal bands. The bulk of this book revolves around these. Everyone else in the Metal scene appear only incidentally, as background providing context only for the rise of these idols. Ian Christe's history of Metal is mostly the history of the rise of Metallica. That's fine if you worship Iommi, Hetfield and Euronymus. If you like Van Halen, Maiden, Anthrax and others, expect to feel like second class citizens. If you have the misfortune to like Stryper, Slayer or even grunge, then spare yourself the humiliation and stay away from this book.
                          - The photos are very 'run of the mill'. No pleasant surprises. And again, there are more photos of Metallica than anyone else.
                          - The descriptions of the music are all given in glamorous hyperbole. Christe's aim seems to be delivery of verbose ravings about his own favorites and semi-witty snipes at Metal bands he dislikes (especially Glam Metal and grunge). If you are a musician yourself, you'll miss some sort description of the technical innovations each Metal era brought. If you are a serious fan, you'll miss a more critical appraisal of the songs and riffs.

And yet, despite these gripes, overall I liked the book. It's still quite readable. Even if you didn't know most of the bands mentioned before, this book will still interest you enough to want to go listen to some of their music. Personally, I like Metallica and didn't mind the obvious bias by the author at all. But even if you do find the bias irritating, just remind yourself: music is an art. And after all, appreciation of 'art' is inherently subjective.

5 out of 5 stars Global perspective, highly satisfying result.......2006-11-24

A great, entertaining book on Heavy Metal's crazy little trends and its big, glorious history. Really well done, from a very personal perspective. To the critics who call the author a Metallica Fan: They once were one of the most mass influencing metal bands ever! And Christe, in contrast to some ridiculous british books, is not concentrating on his home country - even the german scene that I know pretty good is covered almost completely - this book is a bible!

4 out of 5 stars Finally! Let's hear it for King Diamond........2006-11-03

I thought this book was good because it gave some well deserved attention to alot of the lesser known bands of heavy metal, such as Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost and Immortal. Though the author gives too much attention to Metallica, I still feel it is a book worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Great History of Metal.......2006-09-19

I really enjoyed this book. Christie provides a very concise and comprehensive overview of heavy metal, covering all time periods and sub-genre's of HM music.

3 out of 5 stars Snapshot of American Pop Culture and You.......2007-09-04

MIRROR ON AMERICA is a text book composed of various essays examining the impact pop culture has upon modern American society. Some of the areas examined include fashion, marketing, television, movies, music, sports, fast food restaurants, theme parks, and the Internet. Various social issues are also examined including gender identity and self-image, race, and ethnic backgrounds. The essays are taken from a wide variety of sources including newspapers, magazines, popular journals, song lyrics, and websites. Most of the writings are quite short, between 2-3 pages, and are easy to understand.

The book is often used in introductory college lit classes as a way of introducing to students how to critically examine their culture and the media. Even though I read the book and found it very easy to read (I finished the entire book in 3 days), I think that it would work well for teaching students who haven't had many critical thinking classes before. I also think it would make a good text to use while teaching a high school media literacy class. Overall, though the book isn't spectacular, it does a decent job at doing what it was designed for.

3 out of 5 stars good, but a bit simplistic.......2006-05-16

I considered using this book for the college freshman composition course that I teach. I decided against it, however, because the book lacks depth and the reading level is a bit too low. There are some good sample essays that make for fun out of class reading, but they don't really push the envelope. The study questions are high-school level, and the book is riddled with footnotes defining words that college students should already know. The result is patronizing and distracting. If I use this book, it would be for a class that focuses solely on pop culture and advertising issues, but it would still need to be supplemented with another text, other examples or just a lot of in-class discussion to go beyond the shallow treatments here. Also, many of the "hip" references are already woefully out of date for today's college freshman.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Textbook on American Culture.......2006-03-24

As a developmental compostion teacher, I have used this text for several years, and without question, the students have not only praised it, but strongly recommended it for future classes. That kind of praise has never happened to me with any other textbook. Students love the readings--they are lively, challenging, yet very pertinent to real issues and not watered-down versions of those controversies. Additionally, I love the readings because they blend real-life experiences and observations with real in-depth critical analysis, but still, at a level that is both accessible and challenging.

3 out of 5 stars Good Lit. Class Book.......2002-12-29

This book was used in my college English Lit. class to help students be more critic of things that they read, whether it be a textbook or a magazine article. Most of the essays in the book have major flaws. The one that I remember the best was written by Dick Clark and was about Elvis Presley. Clark makes the comment that Elvis didn't write his own songs, which is untrue (as blanket statements tend to be). Anyway, Elvis wrote at least 2 hits, one with Vera Matson (Love Me Tender) and another with Otis Blackwell (Don't Be Cruel).

Though many of these essays are poorly written, this is a good textbook for developing with critical reading skills.

                          1 out of 5 stars Mirror On America = P.O.S.(negative connotation).......2001-04-23

Obviously, most of these writers spent too much time in front of the mirror while blabbing on about nothing, after having read these essays. They go on and write about blatant issues, most of them have too much time on their hands. They go on and blab about nothing. These essays shouldn't be given the light of day. Do not attempt to read or buy this book. Don't even give it a glimpse at the bookstore or library. It is not worth your precious time. It certainly wasted mine, only because I had to use this book for my Composition II course in college. It is that bad, and not worth a single penny. Mirror On America is nothing more than a piece of "FILL IN YOUR WORD."

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy.......2007-01-10

My husband and I are rollercoaster tycoon fanatics and this guide was extremely helpful. We learned a lot about building coasters and parks. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who plays the game as it will give you great insight on how to improve your parks.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide if you can read.......2006-07-25

now for some people this book might be confusing because there so used to there little colering books but in truth this is a really good guide even though it does repeat it's self alot but thats just to make sure those people who dont grasp stuff on the first go get in the end. I haven't read the part that tells you how to beat the game so i cant really rate it but as for the rest of the book it does go much deeper into the other aspects then the manual did and the ride and atractions chapter is very helpful for pricing right. I read this thing in two days just to see what I got out of it and I noticed that I didn't get board and just walk away like I always did with the games manual which was good cause i did learn some really valuable stuff.

                                      so here's the summery:

Pros: easy to read, good info, cheats, a walkthough, and free downloads for things like coasters and building.

Cons: None really altough he repeats himself alot but thats about it.

Final Thought: A good buy for those who are having some trouble or just like knowing it all.

1 out of 5 stars So not worth it..........2006-06-23

                                      The directions are very confusing...
The subjects covered are unneeded and repetative...
The ride/shop lists are impossible to navigate...
The directions for the Scenarios are completely useless (especially La La Land, which I haven't been able to complete)...

                                      So, the verdict is...
Don't buy this guide. It's horribly done and is a waste of money...
