5 out of 5 stars Find the Do-Gooder in You.......2006-10-22

I first read this book when I entered college in 2000 and it has continually remained a motivation and reference point for the past 6-years. After reading this book, I denounced my film making aspirations and took a path of public affairs.

"How You Can Help" highlights simple ways you can incorporate doing good into various aspects of your life. Through inspirational stories and step-by-step guides to getting involved, Coplin provides a thorough outline of how you can make a difference. Idealistic, yes, but unlike many other inspirational books, Coplin cuts straight to the point. This book makes getting involved simple. I recommend "How You Can Help" to anyone, but especially young students trying to find their place in this world. It will help you find the do-gooder in you.

5 out of 5 stars Get Inspired -- Do Some Good.......2000-02-17

His easy-to-follow tips and guidelines for being a successful volunteer, donor and/or professional do-gooder make this book a must-read. "How You Can Help" crosses all boundaries, as it applies to anyone from parents looking to develop a neighborhood tutoring program to business-owners looking to make their companies more socially responsible. Coplin's tales of success provide inspiration for all. This book sets the standard for do-gooding and motivates each reader to do his or her part to make the world a better place.

      Book Description

Extensively researched, eccentrically compiled and irresponsibly written, this essential handbook is far from being just another collection of useless information. I is in fact a collection of useless, misleading, and possibly dangerous information. Breathtakingly combining the humorous with the bizarre, Shite's Unoriginal Miscellany weaves an eccentric course between fact-for-fact's-sake and that 'display of superior knowledge which is as great a vulgarity as display of superior wealth'. Among a mass of arcane, vital or merely fascinating information - 'semaphore signals', 'popular assult rifles', and 'ways of escaping from wild animals (probably)' spring immediately to mind - it offers priceless snippets of information a reader may one day need to know, such as 'things to say to your mother on her birthday', 'carrying a large flat parcel' and, of course, 'things to do with mashed potatoes'. Here too is information that will come in handy when you least expect it, from 'obscure royal appointments' to 'Buffyisms', and 'safety gloves' to 'fashional diseases and ailments'. Pointlessly ordered, insanely edited, and lovingly machine-printed on a substance closely resembling paper, Shite's Unoriginal Miscellany blends humor and knowledge together in a superior recipe for instant laughter.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A clever parody.......2004-02-08

First came Schott's Original Miscellany. Now comes a hilarious British parody, by the fictional A. Parody, that takes the original book one step sillier. This small volume is a compendium of off-the-wall and funny facts, mostly in the form of lists. The contents range from the factual, such as famous people with pseudonyms and the semaphore alphabet, to the fictional "7 things you can never quite remember," in which Santa's reindeer include Comic and Blitzkreig. Some of the categories are outrageously useless, such as prime numbers whose individual digits add up to 11. Some are useful, such as collective nouns for animals and a list of the aliens from Star Trek. Let's not forget such silly gems as "Ways to end a romance" and "Not wildly popular sea captains." This book even satirizes an index; the last page claims that an index should be tailored to the reader and then proceeds to explain how to construct your own. This book is witty, creative, and a great spoof. You might even learn a thing or two from it. Just remember to take its contents with a generous dash of salt! This would make a great gag gift for the trivia buff.

4 out of 5 stars Brit Humour, Great Bathroom Read, really!.......2004-01-03

This is a great bathroom read, or for urbanites, the train. If you read Mental Floss magazine, and enjoy Brit humor, then you'll probably enjoy this small, slim edition. The reading is concise and easy to digest, fun and thought provoking. Great to share with friends.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS INTENDED AS A PARODY OF THE VERY ENTERTAINING.......2003-12-01

SCHOTT'S ORIGINAL MISCELLANY. What's interesting is, I found it just as dip-into-able as the original. The humor is British, so if you don't "get" British humor it might fall flat. On the other hand, it is cheaper than the original and my suspicion is that if you enjoyed browsing Schott's, you will enjoy browsing this as well.

Don Campbell's reputation runs the gamut from serious educator bent on improving the health and intelligence of his audience to clever marketer, making a fast buck from specially trademarked pseudoscience. In The Mozart Effect for Children, Campbell explains early on why Mozart's music is thought to have such amazing powers, and while he cites no statistics or studies, his lyrical explanations of Mozart's simplicity and elegance will have many reader's heads nodding in agreement--it's difficult to disagree with "his music is at once deeply mysterious and accessible, and above all, without guile". A few pages are devoted to descriptions of studies done by French specialist Dr. Alfred Tomatis, and "Spotlight on Specialist" pages throughout the book are an attempt to add a more clearly scientific feel. Still, most of what passes for science in this book is anecdotal and will not make a satisfying read for those looking for original research.

Each chapter is devoted to a particular age, from prenatal to mid-elementary school, and parents and educators can find excellent musical menus, practical suggestions, and entertaining games to play at the end of every chapter. The menus include suggestions for appropriate times to play the various pieces, as well as a brief description of the type of music, helpful in case you're not immediately familiar with "Adagio from the Divertimento" or "Concertante from the Serenade No. 9". Games range from simple variations on pat-a-cake to rhythmic chanting designed to improve memory skills, and parents will enjoy playing at least as much as their children will. Perhaps you child's IQ will magically improve from listening to Mozart, perhaps it won't. At worst, Campbell opens up a world of music-related learning for your family that can be both enriching and entertaining. --Jill Lightner

        Book Description

In his groundbreaking bestseller, The Mozart Effect, author Don Campbell confirmed that music has the power not only to soothe the soul but to heal the body as well. Now he offers essential guidance that will enable parents and educators to better understand music as an aid to growth, development, mental and physical health, and creative awakening in our most precious human resource.

A recent study found that visual tracking, eye-hand coordination, and other positive behaviors developed more rapidly in babies whose mothers participated in a pilot program of prenatal exposure to music. Another study found that remedial first graders who were given seven months of music instruction and visual arts training soon caught up in all subjects with an average group of children not exposed to the arts, and actually surpassed them in math.

It has been proven time and time again that music is a powerful implement for stimulating a child's brain, nourishing his spirit, and strengthening his body, even prior to birth. Giving your daughter or son the incomparable gift of music helps your child rapidly and decisively reach his or her emotional and intellectual potential, and stimulates wondrous areas of mental awareness and creative discovery that might otherwise lie dormant.

In The Mozart Effect for Children, author Don Campbell shows that music is the perfect tool to improve children's language, movement, and emotional skills at home, school, and play. He presents a wealth of dynamic, inventive ways for parents and teachers to invigorate a child's imagination with music, sounds, and songs, supplying simple exercises and fun activities tailored for each age group and stage of development, from prenatal through age ten. Campbell offers ideas and exercises both practical and profound, from special ways for parents to bond with their newborns to tips on fostering good study habits and stress reduction for elementary school students.

The Mozart Effect for Children is an invaluable resource for any parent and every child, as well as for grandparents and educators. With Campbell's fascinating, informed, and compassionate guidance -- and with the incredible, uplifting power of tone, rhythm, and melody you can help the child in your life aspire, achieve, and grow healthier in mind, body, and spirit.

        5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-10-20

This was a helpful book. I appreciated the real examples of how to incorporate music into my child's life.

5 out of 5 stars Nurturing through Music.......2006-07-05

This book introduces a wonderful way to spend more time nurturing your child through musical activities. I was a little skeptical about the effects it would have, but found that even simple ryhmes can calm my children down. It is not a "fast food" approach. It is about using music and singing to motivate and comfort your child. We sing and ryhme all day- from diaper changes to car trips.

As an educator I find the ideas in this book to be a great way for every parent to prepare their child for school. It may not make your child more "intelligent", but I believe the author is correct in saying that your child with be a better learner.

        1 out of 5 stars More feel-good fantasies..........2002-11-30

No matter how many experiments are made that disproof the Mozart Effect there will always be parents who want a fast easy way of controlling or making their kids more "intelligent". Someday someone is going to market a sugar pill to do that, and make millions.

It's the fast-food approach to life. And you as a parent are going to lose for it.

The old fashion way, giving of your time and caring by sharing and personnaly teaching is no longer in vogue.

5 out of 5 stars This book Sings !.......2000-10-12

This book will make me a smarter parent. I am amazed at how this book blends the practical, the scientific and the artistic into common sense. I am not a fan of Classical music, but this book has helped me understand more about the healthy qualities of music.

Mr. Campbell gives me the evidence I need to show my school district that music classes must be included in every child's schoolday. The book is well referenced and gives many ways to help children improve their minds with music. This book sings the heart, the brain and the body of music!

        5 out of 5 stars Parent - therapist gives a standing ovation.......2000-10-12

This book is outstanding. As a parent and nearly a grand parent, as well as a music therapist, I welcome this clear and creative book. There is no doubt you can use the Mozart Effect in your home the way Campbell defines it. It is more than just a scientific study, it is about knowing how to nuture a child and a family with music . Campbell is neither elitest nor arrogant. He inspires and informs. All types of music are included and the book takes a step by step, age by age, approach to brain and body development. He shows us that The Mozart Effect goes back to research in France over forty years ago and continues in centers throughout the world today to help children with ADD, speech problems and dyslexia.

As a music therapist, I hope every family will use this book. It can improve listening and communication. It can inspire us to look at a much bigger picture in child development. Thanks Don Campbell for doing your homework so well.

                Book Description

In If Only We Knew John Willinsky uses current social issues and historical precedents to demonstrate that the social sciences can and should contribute far more to public knowledge than they have in the past. We have the technologies, Willinsky demonstrates, and need only the determination to create a public resource out of social research that can extend democratic participation and self-determination, as well as improve research's focus and public support. If Only We Knew offers examples of why and how this is not only possible but necessary, in the face of knowledge-based economies and a withering public sector. This book inspires the public to demand far more of research; it also shows researchers how to deliver far more of knowledge's value to the public.

                    Book Description

The Shade family of 3D programs, developed by e-frontier, inc., has long been popular in Japan. Now, California-based Curious Labs brings Shade to the English-speaking market for the first time. Shade 7 Designer LE, the entry-level version of the product, provides an easy and inexpensive introduction to the world of 3D graphics. Shade 7 designer LE: Model, Animate, Render, written by a team of experts assembled by e-frontier, teaches you the basics- not only of Shade, but of 3D graphics as well.

The step-by-step tutorials in the book cover beginning modeling, the basics of textures, rendering and radiosity, an introduction to keyframe animation and more.

Shade Masters are computer graphics artists, illustrators, engineers, and teachers who have years of experience working with Shade. They have pooled their knowledge and expertise to produce these tutorials.

3 out of 5 stars Not much more than a basic guide, not well written.......2005-12-29

User manuals that come with software are notoriously bad, which is why most popular applications have third-party books written to teach users how to use them. It's rare to find such a book that's actually less helpful than the documentation, but I'm afraid this book is not much more than an overpriced reprint of the information found in the PDF documentation that comes with Shade, except that it's less clear. It's a pretty book, with lots of full color illustrations and screenshots, and has fairly broad coverage of Shade's features, but explanations are shallow and often confusing.

The tutorials on the accompanying CD are only a little bit helpful and don't do more than teach you elementary Shade functions. (I also had trouble opening files on the CD directly from Shade -- I had to copy them to my hard drive before Shade would stop throwing errors.) I did get some use out of them, but in many cases, the tutorial simply tells you to open such-and-such a file, and then goes about telling you which options to select and which settings to choose without explaining why. You're told to point and click and look at the results on the screen, but the book doesn't explain any of the underlying principles.

I'd find this an acceptable beginner's book if it were clear and well-written, but it isn't. The authors are Japanese, and I'm afraid this is evident in the English text. I don't know if this book is a translation from Japanese or if it was written in English by writers who are not native speakers, but in either case, it really should have been given a professional editing job. The English throughout the book, while usually grammatically correct, is stilted, awkward, and sometimes opaque in meaning, often making it difficult to follow exactly what the writer means. For example, the first chapter goes over the interface and menus, reasonably enough, but you have to read it several times while looking closely at the pictures to figure out exactly which parts of the UI are being referred to. "Primary views"? "View Mode of the Figure Window"? (Which window is that? The UI consists initially of a screen divided into four different views, and the author sometimes refers to one, some or all of them without making it clear which "views" he means.)

From the introduction to the "Moving Shapes" section (which is actually about moving objects within a scene): "Since it is difficult to make a distinction between overlapping front and rear shapes, you cannot carry out a direct drag in the "Figure Window" where many shapes overlap each other. Alternatively, you can use the Modify Key to move the selected objects."

It doesn't explain which "Modify Key" (by which they mean "keyboard shortcut") is being referred to here.

Yes, you can parse the meaning, but you have to do this throughout the book. And a great deal of page space is spent showing screenshots of dialog boxes or rudimentary explanations of menu options. Example: "The large cursor is a 3D cursor that functions within the limits of the "Figure Window." You can switch between a normal cursor and large cursor by using this box." This is accompanied by two screenshots of a window that is empty except for the cursor -- yes, half a page to illustrate the use of a checkbox that lets you switch between a large cursor and a normal one.

Another example: "Convert it into a Polygon Mesh with the Convert tool," followed by picture of the Convert tool dialog and a note: "You don't need to change default values." That's good, since there is no explanation of what the values do. Then "Although the object hardly seems to change, it has been converted into a Polygon Mesh."

I'm not saying the book is useless, but the tutorials and examples are very simple, and don't go into detail at all. By the time you finish, you'll have a general idea of Shade's features, but you'll be confused about a lot of the functions, and it's just tedious to read because of the dense, technical jargon imperfectly rendered into English. I would really give this book a lower rating, but for completeness and print quality, and the fact that it's the only book out there for Shade, I'll say that as a companion to the user guides, you'll probably get some value out of it. I'll look forward to a better treatment by (hopefully) someone more skilled in English technical writing.

5 out of 5 stars A good quick intro in a Shade tools.......2005-09-26

When I was a kid, I graduated from an art school, and later (but also long time ago) I had a deal with 3D in CAD/CAM systems. Now 3D is just my hobby.

In a first place - about the product itself. Shade is a mid-range 3D modeling tool. Not so powerful as Maya and XSI, but not not so expensive also. Maybe it is not the best tool for animators, but good enough for artists, illustrators, engineers and hobbyists, like me. Shade 8 was introduced about week ago, and it offers some improvements fo even less price than Shade 7 does. Besides, Shade integrated with Poser very thighly, that's could make a difference from other mid-range 3D modeling tools.

About the book itself. I got the book for lack of description of MagicSketch in a base documentation. MagicSketch is a simple and sometimes useful tool which allows to draw 2D shapes and converts them into 3D solids automatically. I found it in this book, and enjoyed it. This book shows how to make simple shapes in Shade, change surfaces attributes, use cameras, lighting, MagicalSketch, use 2D pictures as templates for 3D models, how to render, and how Radiosity should change the final result. Besides simple ("push the button - watch the result") exercises in 10 chapters, this book also includes 6 tutorials in 11th chapter.

The price is little bit high for such a short book, however, the quality is high. I mean colored illustrations and the content on CD. They offer the ready to use models, sometimes complex enough. It allows you to look how your manipulations affect a real scene, not just something very simple. And it allows them to make the introduction very quick.

Futhermore, there are included two really complicated models (70MB each). The rendering process of each of them may take two, maybe three, hours, depending on your hardware brutality. And if you are a beginner, they will give you an insight what is the real thing. Of course, this is not 4GB scene for some 512-way SGI's Godzilla, however.

Of course, this introductory book does not uncover top secrets of 3D modeling and animation. It gives you exactly what it promises - how to use the tool. It is just the first step (Don't forget about 1000 pages manuals), but a good one. That's why I gave it 5 stars.
