Financial Careers? I work in the industry and these sample resumes wouldn't get you an interview to bus tables in our cafeteria...

If you're serious about a career in the finance industry, especially one in i-banking, this is not the book for you. It's childish and unprofessional!

5 out of 5 stars a winning guide for resume writing.......1999-05-11

Before reading this book, my recognition of resume writing was just a paper containing descriptions of work experience, education, other skills, etc.. This book unleashes my mind. Resume is your own advertisement rather than a series of dead and routine description. You've to make it impressive. This book teaches us how to make your resume creative and interesting to read. You know, human resource officer often drowns in hundreds of application. Hence, in additional to your own qualification, it is also very important to get rid of those traditional formats and find some appealing way to catch employer's interest. I highly recommend this book.

          Book Description

Members of the European Union are reluctant to cede their sovereignty over the production and trade of arms, yet there are several factors suggesting that defense industrial restructuring and related government policies must move from the national to the regional level. These factors include the post-Cold War political environment, international competition in the armaments industry (particularly from American companies), lobbying efforts by some European defense firms and interest groups, attempts by the European commission and Parliament to broaden the EU's policy-making agenda, and the integrative forces unleashed by the Single European Act and Maastricht Treaty. This book explains the evolution of the "Arm's length" relationship between the EU and Europe's relationship between the EU and Europe's defense industry by describing the development of the institution's powers in this area and the forces facilitating and impeding their expansion.

            Book Description

Conceived as a marketing device by nineteenth-century publishers hoping to gain a share of the lucrative almanac market, The Crockett Almanacs became the best-selling and longest-running series of comic almanacs published in the United States before the Civil War. Michael Lofaro explores one of the Almanacs' most entertaining and intriguing aspects: the adventures of backwoods women. Their portrayals, which range from the heroic to the satiric, from the comic to the sentimental, create uproarious laughter and provoke serious commentary-often in the same tale.

            Book Description

The Beatles: Day-by-Day, Song-by-Song, Record-by-Record contains all you need to know about the world's greatest band in a single volume. The day-by-day diary covers their entire career from the Quarrymen days in '57 right up to their eventual break-up in April 1970. Learn fascinating facts about the music industry and the Beatles' private lives.

The song-by-song section tells you the story behind every song they ever made—with full recording history and session details. And the record-by-record section covers every single, EP, and album released in Britain and the United States—including their Christmas fan-club discs!

The book also contains five useful appendices covering everything from chart records and awards to tour dates. With its meticulous research and easy-to-understand approach, this is the only Beatles book that you'll ever need.

A nearly exhaustive chronicle of the Fab Four. Ostensibly the "only Beatles book that you'll ever need,” Mercifully, however, only the first third is devoted to a diary of daily events; the remainder is an alphabetized song list and chronological discography. Cross's hip, lively narrative—"August 7, 1957: The Quarrymen's debut at the Cavern Club. Paul couldn't make it because he was away at scout camp (not very rock 'n' roll!)..." As for the beginning of the end, signs of strain began well before 1970— Yoko Ono's conquest of Lennon, McCartney's bossiness, Lennon's heroin addiction, business conflicts with manager Allen Klein—but Cross wisely refrains from passing judgment on the definitive cause of the breakup. Not the only Beatles book you'll ever need, but entertaining nonetheless.

            4 out of 5 stars a rock 'n roll beatles history.......2006-08-14

if you are a frequent visitor to the website, then you will probably be interested to know what is included in the book and what has been left out of it, because it is not an exact copy of everything that he says on the internet.
The DAY-BY-DAY history section includes every year from 1956 to 1970. the website does include most of this, but the entire years of 1958, 1963 (the height of beatlemania), 1967 (the summer of love when the beatles released Sgt. Peppers) and 1970 (the painful year when the beatles split) are missing on the website - they are only available in the book.
i am happy to see that the useful lists of singles and albums released by other artists every month during that period are retained in the book.
the SONG-BY-SONG section includes every official song that the beatles released during their career (that is - every song released on their 13 albums, all of their singles and EPS, and including b-sides) . a lot of these songs are missing from the website. for example, some of their most major songs of their entire career: From me to you, i want to hold your hand, lucy in the sky with diamonds, nowhere man, please please me, something, strawberry fields forever, tomorrow never knows, twist and shout and youve got to hide your love away are only available in the book. but as a counterweight, the unreleased bootlegs are not here.
the RECORD-BY_RECORD section also includes the birtish and USA disocographies of EPS, which is not available on the website.
theb ook is weighty and their is a LOT to read. (500 pages +) and it is quite rock 'n roll. and by that i mean, it is not straight. as some readers have noted below, yes, he swears. and he inlcudes quotes from the band in which they swear. he also includes fruity quotes (especially from messier john lennon) about their -- how can i put this nicely -- girlfreinds and groupies, and drug usage. the beatles pulled no punches when they described some of their experiences in hamburg, and neither does he. the year 1964 is a good eye-opener. not only do they meet bob dylan and get introduced to 'mary jane', for example, (which is a most detailed passage in the book . i enjoyed their recollections of the band members and bob dylans friends who participated. they descibe the rolling of the famous joints in a most descriptive manner!) they also desribe the american tours, and everything that 'involved' in a most eye-opening way.
i frequently blushed at the some of the tales contained therein (and let me say, that i am no prude) but i also laughed double as much. most of all, i came away from this book wishing that i had lived the life of a beatle.

i bought this book after reading the website, and it deserves 5 stars, but i have dropped it to 4 in protest that half of the material that used to be on the website seems to have disappeared.
important information like the diary for the whole of the year 1970 that used to be on the site, is now seemingly only available in theisbook.
so it is 5 star material, but i am giving it a 4 for the web-man removing some of my favourite stuff. ha!

5 out of 5 stars you can read this at the website and see for yourself.......2005-11-19

If, like me, you browse the internet for stories about The Beatles then will surely know about the website that this book comes from already: www.beatles-discography.com.
It has been around for years and is massive.

This book is a book version of that site. So if you want to see what this book is like then just visit the website and see for yourself.

The words for virtually all of it are there for you to read for free.

5 out of 5 stars Some people will love this book, and some will not.......2005-11-10

I can see a lot of people loving this book, and a lot of other people... not. I think some may be put off by the author's writing style - which is quite loose. It also contains some strong language - be warned.

The text is rather "conversational". But the stronger language in use has a bonus - in that the author delves quite deeply into areas such as their drug use, that other books just touch upon. The break-up is brutally well-done, for example. It is quite clear from the text that The Beatles were not getting along at this point in their careers - and this is no epilogue to deliver a happy ending.

But if you are looking for a book that your children can read, then maybe this book is not for you.
Their love life, drug habits and earthy quotes (especially some of Johns diatribes) do tend to make you blush.
I certainly wouldn't let my 10-year-old child read this book.

The first part of the book - the history section - is very stong, very detailed and very complete. But as the previous reviewer states, the song section leaves out some of their later BBC session and Anthology releases, together with any bootleg recordings, which I do believe are contained on the accompanying website.
But every song that they released during their 8-year career is present and correct. (Maybe we will one day get an updated version - like 'A Hard Day's Write' perhaps?) But even so, the book still contains every song from their studio albums, singles, EPs and B-sides - which is more than enough for most fans. After all, these are the songs that you actually listen too day in and day out.

The length of the commentary does vary, depending on the fame of the song, and whether there is actually anything to say. Lennon and McCartney have, of course, admitted to knocking out songs in a rapid fashion during the early part of their career, and I don't expect that there is very much to tell about their genesis.

So whilst ALL commentaries contain session details, some just have an accompanying paragraph. A quick perusal of the website will show you exactly what I mean in this regard.
Most songs are given half-page to a page, increasing to 3 pages for the very famous songs. Hey Jude, Strawberry Fields Forever, A Day In The Life, Love Me Do and Revolution, for example, all have 2 or 3 pages devoted to each.

I found that the essays are generally more detailed than the ones contained in 'A Hard Days Write', whilst lacking the social commentary of 'Revolution In The Head'.
But the social commentary is mainly contained in the history section, of course.

To sum up, this is a large book with a definite writing style of its own. And you may be put off the stronger language. Or you may find the conversational style a breathe of fresh air - in an area too often filled with dreary tomes.

But hooray, I say, for a book with a bit of life. Just don't give it to your children!

            4 out of 5 stars Good material.......2005-05-11

If you have been in the website, you know this is good stuff. Incomplete, unfortunately and also it doesnt do a good job in discussing the differences between different pressings, mono/stereo, etc. Most of the time you have to 'assume' they are talking about the current CD's, which is not entirely the right thing to do or the best version of the albums.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Not Perfect But Close .......2005-04-08

The book is jam packed with all kinds of info.

In response to the other review: I think the main problem is the website beatles-discography.com got so huge so quick that constant updating resulted in some stuff not being included in the book.

But the ommissions that I've found are really obscure ones. Probably stuff that most authors would skip over because the songs are like non-existant. Like maybe a bootlegged unreleased song from a session or something almost irrelevant to a discography.

So perhaps a revised edition could only satisfy the most hardcore Beatle fanatics that want to know things like how many nose hairs John Lennon had in his left nostril on March 12th 1964, but for any sane individual this book does the job nicely and it's a bit more entertaining then a list type discography because you get to read all about the songs and stuff. AND it fits nicely in a backpack which means you can take it camping with you! :)

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable (as far as it goes!).......2005-03-14

Had I discovered this book on the racks of a bookstore, I would have placed it near the top of the Beatles reference books in my library. Unfortunately, I found it through the website by the same name as the book's title. A fantastic, richly informed website! And therein, lies my problem with the book. It pales in comparison with the wealth of info in the website. Since the site says "If you like this website, buy the book!", I naturally assumed I'd be getting the same material, making the book on a par with the excellent Lewisohn and Spizer reference texts.
First, the positive: It's an informative, enjoyable read with a light, almost irreverent, conversational style. It is filled with quotes from a variety of sources that gives a fresh flavor to otherwise well-known Beatles facts.
The negatives fall into four main categories: [1] There are a distressingly high number of typographical errors. It's almost as if the book was written before spell-check was invented! Example: The Beatles' meditation trip to Bangor, Wales -- "Bangor" is misspelled "Bagnor" more often than it's spelled correctly. [2] There are no photos! The book is text from cover to cover, unlike the website which has a stunning collection of photos. [3] There is no index, so if you want to read about Astrid Kirchherr and her relationship with the Beatles, for example, you better know where and what year they met. [4] The info in the "Day-by-Day" and "Song-by-Song" sections is incomplete, sometimes severely so. For example, there are discussions of 372 songs on the website, but only 241 in the book! I bought the book primarily for this info, so I was sorely disappointed in the omissions.
To be fair, the website does not state that the book is an exact repro of the site, but the implication is there. If it had included the 131 omitted songs, I would have given this book 5 stars, even with the other problems noted. Despite all this, it's still a very enjoyable reference. But BE FOREWARNED: it is a selective representation of the website. Very good -- as far as it goes.

              Book Description

Introducing a new series of innovative chess guides: each one presents in detail the key ideas of an important chess opening in a fresh, entertaining, and accessible way. The manuals reveal the current thinking of the world's elite players, giving novices a glimpse of how the champions achieve success. This first entry covers the Gruenfeld Defense, a favorite of the legendary Garry Kasparov. His good friend and confidant, International Master Michael Khodarkovsky, lets us into the secrets of Kasparov's preparation, explains the most important elements of the Gruenfeld, and provides an up-do-date survey of the critical lights. A "First Moves" section goes through all the basic opening moves; "Heroes & Zeroes" takes a look at the best and worst performances with this opening; and "What's Hot" pinpoints the very latest ideas from the world's elite. A detailed table summarizes the main variations, with assessments.

              4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2005-03-10

Khodarkovsky's book the Grunfeld Denence Revealed is the first book in a series of Bastsford Publishing books about openings "revealed." I had read a somewhat unfavorable review and had no intention of getting it, until I stumbled upon it in a book store and found the structure of the book to be very interesting. The author, himself, states that the book does not set out to describe the opening in a strict order. For a well written book that is very systematic in it's approach, the Grunfeld Defence by Nigel Davies is probably the book of choice. However, Khodarkovsky's book is put together in a way that makes it very interesting and a lot of fun to read. The chapters include "first steps" which shows the first recorded Gruenfeld game, of course by Gruenfeld himself. I think it was a nice way to get started on the voyage to learn more about this opening. The chapter then goes on to discuss a game with the exchange variation and 8. Be2. The next chapter is entitled "Heroes and Zeroes." This chapter is full of annotated games which have been important contributions to Grunfeld theory. Included here are games in which the black side features Kasparov, Svidler and several lesser known Grunfeld specialists. The annotations are excellent, and on several occasions include contributions from the players themselves. The chapter on "Strategy" includes an overview of the exchange variation and the 4. Bf4 variation. The following chapter looks at "what's hot" at the GM level lately in regards to the grunfeld. In this chapter he looks at two variations, including "the modern exchange" which ultimately turned Kasparov off of the gruenfeld, after a loss to Kramnik in the World Championship match in 2000. Reportedly Kasparov had difficulty finding a good response to 8...Bg4 9. Rb1. In fact, this was his reason for switching to the Queen's gambit accepted, for his reply to d4. He stated that the gruenfeld was still viable with 8...Nc6, but it was becoming too time consuming to try to break down kramnik's berlin defence. Khodarkovsky shows an example of modern and effective use of 8...Nc6, played after kaspy had abandoned the grunfeld. The author then reviews the fianchetto variation, and the strategy involved. The next chapter is entitled "tricks and traps." The first game in this section is an example of the russian variation. The game is Doroshkevich vs Gulko 1975 USSR championship, and starts as follows: 1. d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3Nc3 d5 4Nf3 Bg7 5Qa4+ Bd7 6Qb3 dxc4 7 Qxc4 Bc6!? 8 Ne5 O-O 9 Bg5 Bd5 10 Qd3 Nc6. Here he says the careless 11 e4? leads to a tactical shot 11...Bxd4!. I didn't see any great tactical shot for black so I ran it in fritz 8 as well as reviewed it with a master level friend. The author did not give any more information on the position, and fritz's assemnent was white was slightly ahead at +0.5. The line would seem to continue 12. Nxd4 Nb4 13. Qe2 and white is doing fairly well. If a 2100 player and 2700 program cannot figure out the tactic, it is probably worthy of a more detailed explanation than the author provided. Anyway, the next chapter is very cool. It is entitled "test your skill" and is comprised of middle game positions stemming from grunfeld openings. You assess the positions, and learn about the strategy and tactics that can arise in the middle game in a question and answer format. It is followed by a section on solutions. I have several opening books, but have never seen this set up before, and I like it very much. There are not many reviews on this book, but the negative reviews tend to point out the next chapter, called "details." which is somewhat disappointing. The author has compiled 71 games in no particular order into this chapter, annotated with sybols only. This would be fine if they were organized or indexed, but they are just thrown together randomly. He concludes with one page of advice and a quote from Kasparov in preparation for entering battle with this exciting opening.
My overall assessment is that the annotations are outstanding. The background information about the opening itself and it's propents is very interesting. The structure of the book makes it a very enjoyable read - which is an absolute must, because it it very difficult to get through a boring chess book. As the author stated right from the introduction, it is not a systemic review. As such, this book is really best used in conjunction with a more systematic review of the grunfeld. For me, that is Nigel Davies' The Grunfeld Defence from Everyman Chess. It is thorough, organized and complete. However, it is not nearly as interesting as Khodarkovsky's book. I have looked at Starting Out, The Gruenfeld, and it looks a little to simplistic, although the author Aagaard is one of my favorites. There are tons of grunfeld books to choose from. If you are planning on getting just one, then you may want to choose one organized in the traditional manner. If you are considering a second book, then I think this one is excellent. It would be worthy of 5 stars if the "details" chapter was not such a deterrant to the overall quality of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a book about the opening.......2004-02-26

I believe that this book is an excellent complement to any other serious book about the Gruenfeld (Hartson's for instance.) This book emphasizes ideas and analysis. It takes you to the point where the middlegame is about to start and provides you with a guiding light to select sound plans and strategies. The book doesn't aim to become a complete treatise but to encourage the reader to think independently and understand what is happening during the game. I liked the excellent selection of games on the back and the way the chapters are organized. Almost each one of them covers very relevant material. For instance, the excerpts about the Seville variation are very valuable and should be read by any serious player. I believe that Khodarkovsky crafted a nice book here and I will keep on coming back to it to brush upon ideas and principles.

              2 out of 5 stars A 2 Simple Model of IT Management.......2005-09-27

The idea from the book is great; approach a complex subject as simple as possible. Unfortunately I have missed theory and practical examples to prove and explain the matter. The author stays too superficial and needs more persuasion to convince the reader that the subject can indeed be approached in a simple way. Finally I would have preferred some real life situations instead of movie quotes.

              5 out of 5 stars Simplicity!.......2004-03-05

This book took what would have otherwise been a complex subject and simplified it to my level of understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible approach and excellent presentation of essentials.......2004-02-14

The simple model that is described in this book is straightforward and represents a viable, effective starting place for establishing process-oriented management. However, in my opinion the best features of this book are found in the chapters on fundamental knowledge and background material.

Section One, in particular, is one of the most readable and accurate summaries of the economics of IT management I've ever read. If this section alone was read and understood by IT managers and consultants, and then put into practice it would go a long way towards improving the way IT supports their business constituents. The material covers subtle and not-so-subtle aspects of investing in the right initiatives for the right reasons, and will cause any IT professional to alter the way they view their role in an enterprise.

Psychology of IT management covered in Section Two is equally valuable. It accurately portrays the separation of concerns of both IT and business, then provides tools and techniques for aligning the two. Entire books have been devoted to this subject area, yet the author manages to capture all of the important points in a mere 26 pages.

The sections on understanding problems and understanding change also stand out as exceptionally well-written recipes for managing two key elements of any process-oriented approach to IT management. The material in these two sections are directly applicable to anyone who is involved with implementing an operational model based on the ITIL.

While the model presented in this book is not 100% consistent with the ITIL, it is close enough, and if properly implemented will give a solid foundation for an ITIL-based operations management paradigm.

If you work in IT operations this book is one best investments you can make. It's short enough to be quickly read, and is rich in knowledge and techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, but not simplistic - essential for all IT pros.......2004-02-07

I was privileged to first read this book when it was in manuscript form. My take on it then was that it provided a collection of proven tools and techniques, and a structured and straightforward approach to applying them. In its final form I stand by my original assessment.

In less than 200 pages the author sets forth all of the key ingredients for successfully managing information technology. He starts by laying the foundation with well-written sections on the economics and psychology of IT management. These two sections clearly explain to managers and those who aspire to management how to think in business terms when approaching problems or starting initiatives, and how to bridge the wide IT-business chasm by examining IT's technology focus and what is important to business, then marrying the two together.

The meat of this book is in Section Three, which introduces the IT management model - topics covered include business processes, tools, the relationship between processes and tools, instrumentation, management data and information, and action resolution. I especially liked the table on page 94 that summarizes the mapping between major industry models and the simple model proposed by the author. This table compares and contrasts the simple model to the ISO network management model's five management areas (FCAPS), the TMN model and the ITIL. I like this because the major industry models require a significant investment in resources to implement, and by starting with the author's simple model a foundation is established with less effort and resources, then when it is running steady state the more sophisticated models can be implemented in a structured fashion.

Each of the subsequent sections augment the simple model by delving into details of understanding problems (framing them correctly within the context of a process), understanding change (which includes all of the key elements of an effective change management process), issues and special cases, and how to select management tools.

Overall this book covers the basics in a balanced manner that keeps technology and business issues and requirements in balanced perspective. Regardless of whether you are a software engineer, IT manager, network or systems engineer, or a consultant, this book will give you a solid foundation of knowledge, and a recipe for success that are sorely needed in our industry.
