    Book Description

As the federal system of entitlements and social services long provided by New Deal--era programs is dismantled and shifted to the states, the religious community finds itself relied upon more than ever to assist with social services for the needy.

The Newer Deal calls upon religious-based organizations and the social work--social service community to put aside their differences and forge a "limited partnership" to provide the social and welfare services that millions depend on. The proposed partnership focuses on joint care for those in need -- with attention to services for people of color, gays and lesbians, women, and programs for community empowerment and economic development -- while maintaining the values and other interests each partner traditionally holds.

The authors discuss different types of religious-based social services and draw on case examples and research findings to show how the religious community's role in providing social services is stronger than ever. They examine the relationship between the religious and the social work--social service communities, as well as the issues that have divided the two, and explain the ways in which concern for the poor is integral to the major faith groups.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging overview of an important topic.......2001-01-23

I recently read this book as part of a class on the intersection of religion and social work. Not a topic traditionally dicussed in our graduate schools of social work, it will grow dramatically in importance as the way social services are provided to people in need.

The book begins by defining the meaning of religiously based social work. Various entites can provide social services in a religious setting, among them local congregations, interfaith agencies, national projects such as Habitat for Humanity and sectarian agencies like Catholic Social Services, relief organizations, and religiously affiliated international organizations. The book details the purposes each of these types of organizations serve, and discusses the role that they play in the provision of social services.

Part two of the book discusses the theological bases and the historical emphases on religion in social work. It reflects upon the fact that many social services started out as religiously affiliated agencies, but as social work became a profession rather than a beneficient activity, the rift between social work and religion began to grow. The authors discuss how infrequently religion arises today in the professional educational activities of social workers, such as MSW programs and professional conferences.

The book then discusses the religiously based social services provided in two locales: Philadelphia and Greensboro. The examination of religiously-based services in two areas can serve as a jumping-off point for how other locales examine their provision of services.

The intersection of religion and social work is sure to grow in importance as the federal government continues devolving responsibility for social progams to state and local government, and permits more involvement by religiously affiliated agencies. The Newer Deal is an excellent book to consider both the good and bad aspects of this fundamental change in social work.

          Book Description

During the past few decades the global auto industry has concentrated into a small number of groups led by GM, Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, VW, Toyota, and Renault. The trend is of great political and economic significance because of the large size of the industry, its importance to the economic health of many countries, and its geographic spread around the globe. Many reasons are commonly cited when trying to explain this rapid corporate consolidation--cost savings, new products and markets, price controls, and labor negotiations chief among them. Frequently, however, mergers do not achieve their stated goals. Merging Traffic explores all these factors and goes on to suggest that, as with the mystique of the automobile itself, other motivations may prevail.

            Book Description

The first complete, unvarnished history of Southern rock’s legendary and most popular band, from its members’ hardscrabble boyhoods in Jacksonville, Florida and their rise to worldwide fame to the tragic plane crash that killed the founder and the band’s rise again from the ashes.

In the summer of 1964 Jacksonville, Florida teenager Ronnie Van Zant and some of his friends hatched the idea of forming a band to play covers of the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Yardbirds and the country and blues-rock music they had grown to love. Naming their band after Leonard Skinner, the gym teacher at Robert E. Lee Senior High School who constantly badgered the long-haired aspiring musicians to get haircuts, they were soon playing gigs at parties, and bars throughout the South. During the next decade Lynyrd Skynyrd grew into the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful of the rock bands to emerge from the South since the Allman Brothers. Their hits “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” became classics. Then, at the height of its popularlity in 1977, the band was struck with tragedy --a plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant and two other band members.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Remembering the Free Birds of Southern Rock is an intimate chronicle of the band from its earliest days through the plane crash and its aftermath, to its rebirth and current status as an enduring cult favorite. From his behind-the-scenes perspective as Ronnie Van Zant’s lifelong friend and frequent member of the band’s entourage who was also aboard the plane on that fateful flight, Gene Odom reveals the unique synthesis of blues/country rock and songwriting talent, relentless drive, rebellious Southern swagger and down-to-earth sensibility that brought the band together and made it a defining and hugely popular Southern rock band -- as well as the destructive forces that tore it apart. Illustrated throughout with rare photos, Odom traces the band’s rise to fame and shares personal stories that bring to life the band’s journey.

For the fans who have purchased a cumulative 35 million copies of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s albums and continue to pack concerts today, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a celebration of an immortal American band.

            5 out of 5 stars Very honest.......2007-01-14

I've already read this book twice and can assure you it's well worth it. Despite being based on Ronnie's personal bodyguard it does not flatter him when it's undeserved, like when it tells the many senseless aggressions Van Zant was guilty of. It also traces very well the beginnings of the band and gives a detailed insight on the cirucumstances surrounding th fatal plane crash that ended the band (don't get me started on the post-77 travesty, please). It also tells a lot about the inspirations behind Skynyrd's lyrics and fills you in too on the not lighthearted events that have ocurred since the Convair went down. Two sections full of great photos of the band are also included.

I would recommend this to any Ls fan and rock and roll fan as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Background Information.......2006-11-24

Great to see the kinds of things they did as kids and the kind of things they were exposed to and thought about. Well written book. Gets you behind the scenes from a very personal and apparently honest perspective.
            Thanks.

            4 out of 5 stars HEARTWARMING.......2006-08-25

For any Skynyrd fan, this is a book that will inform, but more than that, touch your hearts just as their music did when first heard and continues through the years to do. Written from the perspective and first hand knowledge of a personal friend and then employee of the band, it gives credence to certain stories. For one reading between the lines, it also makes it possible to take accounts written by other authors and place them in the timeline of this book and see how things actually could have occurred. This book makes the band more real, closer to being able to imagine just sitting down with any one of them and feel like you know them as a long time friend. A treasured long time friend.

4 out of 5 stars Story of the American Dream.......2005-07-17

This book is excellent. It tells the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd as only a friend could. The fact that Gene Odom loved the guys in the band is apparent from the first pages. He provides an honest and insighful portrait of young musicians who loved their art and worked their rear ends off to make it in the music business. Odom doesn't whitewash the facts - he presents all characters as they were, warts and all. If you are a fan of Skynyrd, you'll consider this book a walk down memory lane with a few old friends - you'll hear some familiar stories about the band and maybe a few you've not heard before. Even if you are not a fan, you'll find this book to be a heartfelt story of a bunch of poor boys from Jacksonville who believed in the American Dream - that if you believe in yourself and are willing to work hard enough you will acheive your goals. A good read!

3 out of 5 stars About Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2005-06-02

It wasnt good the only thing i liked about it was the front cover. I really enjoy all kinds of music books but this one just wasnt my type. I wouldnt reccomend it but if you are willing to read a boring book go right ahead.

            Book Description

In Working at Play, Cindy Aron offers the first full length history of how Americans have vacationed--from eighteenth-century planters who summered in Newport to twentieth-century urban workers who headed for camps in the hills. In the early nineteenth century, vacations were taken for health more than for fun, as the wealthy traveled to watering places, seeking cures for everything from consumption to rheumatism. But starting in the 1850s, the growth of a white- collar middle class and the expansion of railroads made vacationing a mainstream activity. Aron charts this growth with grace and insight, tracing the rise of new vacation spots as the nation and the middle class blossomed. She shows how late nineteenth-century resorts became centers of competitive sports--bowling, tennis, golf, hiking, swimming, and boating absorbed the hours. But as vacationing grew, she writes, fears of the dangers of idleness grew with it. Religious camp grounds, where gambling, drinking, and bathing on Sundays were prohibited, became established resorts. At the same time 'self improvement' vacations began to flourish, allowing a middle class still uncomfortable with the notion of leisure to feel productive while at play. With vivid detail and much insight, Working at Play offers a lively history of the vacation, throwing new light on the place of work and rest in American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about an interesting subject.......2005-01-23

As soon as I first spotted this book I knew I had to read it. I was not disappointed! The author covers approximately a 150 year period ending around 1940. She brings to the reader many fascinating aspects surrounding not only the types of vacations (e.g. religious retreats, resorts for the wealthy, camping, etc.), but perhaps more importantly, the psychological aspects of vacationing in America. Aron describes, in a reflection of the book's title, how the working class had to break the thought process that working was the only way of life; vacationing -- or "play" -- took a number of years to become an acceptable practice. I especially found interesting the role of religion in the acceptance, or non-acceptance, of vacationing. The book was very well researched and, in my opinion, is well worth the investment. "Working at Play" is a wonderful look at American society. There were many times as I was reading the book that I would just pause and reflect on the subject matter, thinking to myself "Now that's something that I would have never even thought about."

                    Book Description

The Future isn't in your future.... In the vastness of outer space a science ship rams into something that has been left undetected for 99,000 years. The players try to survive while chaos attacks their ruined ship from all sides.

Using an all-new 3d6 system of play, players and game masters will be quickly and easily setting up and playing quickly. Character generation is not a one-time event in Metamorphosis Alpha, and players evolve their characters as the game develops. The dangers that you face today may be quite different in a very short time.

This is an all-new 3rd Edition of the very first science fiction role-playing game. First published 25 years ago, this game has been updated and reworked for today's sophisticated gamer. Designed by the award-winning James M. Ward.

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-09-03

I've used books in the MS Office At a Glance series, and expected this to be comparable. This book jumps around a lot, is disorganized, and lacks sufficient illustrations. If you are someone who learns better by being shown how to do something than you do reading instructions, you would be better off using the Office At a Glance books.

                    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Satisfied!.......2002-02-16

I was extremely satisfied with my purchase. The book was received in excellent condition, and quicker than I expected! I will definitely be making more purchases from this seller. Thank You!

4 out of 5 stars Just what the "Dummie" needed.......2001-09-21

I am taking a course, through our community college, on Microsoft Office 2000. Our instructor made a general recommendation for simply written books like this. I had seen the "Dummies" books before, but had never looked at one. This book is awesome! It is so general and easy to understand. I can actually read and absorb the information easily. Thanks to the authors for bringing things down to the average person's level of understanding. Now I feel like I could tackle almost anything using Office 2000.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Surprise!.......2000-04-13

A friend dropped this book off for me to look at, and I almost never opened it because I am generally not impressed the "Dummies" series. However, this book is wonderfully refreshing exception and every office should have it. It has a brief Overview/Reference of W98, and every aspect of Office. It is worded well, and shows you step-by-step how to do a great many common tasks with office. It does not cover any of the subjects in depth, and did not cover FrontPage very well, but I still have to give it a 5. It is a well organized, well written overview of Office and I feel It is a must have. By the way, I bought his copy and about four more since to cut down on technical support calls from my clients.
