gender (and maybe class) in the Japanese workplace.......2006-05-19
A Chinese-American Harvard undergraduate works in a factory and an office in Japan and discusses the differences between the employment dynamics of women and men. This book is heavy on detail and a bit short on analysis. It's not as sophisticated as a Ph.D.'s work. Still, it is impressive that an undergraduate student could put this together. Lo says she majored in East Asian studies, but she must have taken many anthropology classes because this book takes much from that discipline.
Being a Westerner and wearing my feminist cap, it was very hard not to condemn much of what Lo describes. She said a male manager would pinch her and other women's butts. Granted, Lo visited Japan just when the U.S. Supreme Court validated sexual harassment laws. But it is amazing to see what men can get away with in any office. The women are encouraged to be childlike. This reminded me of who anime includes many women characters that seem like bratty girls. How this forced role-playing helps rather than hampers an office, I don't know. It just seems incredibly inefficient to me that women who have college degrees have no promotion potential and are forced to serve coffee. Finally, Lo never mentions compulsory heterosexuality. Basically, she implies that the Japanese purposely make employment terrible for women so that they will want to be married and become housewives. Lo never asks or answer what happens to female workers, or males for that matter, that don't want to create heterosexual marriages.
Supposedly, the West centers the individual and the East centers the group. This book gives great examples of that. Here, women tolerated boring jobs for the good of the company. Women were willing to live in crowded housing situations just to have others around. Lo never repeats the Japanese cliché "The nail that stands out the most gets hammered hardest." Still, the sense of Asian connectedness is verified here.
Though Lo works in a blue-collar setting and a white-collar one, I thought she could have said much more about class distinctions in Japan. This book may be a bit dated now. First, the yen is worth more now and second Japan has been in a huge economic slump for some years. Also, the birth of the Princess and the modification to allow her to rule rather than a son will hopefully help Japanese gender relations.
I am also skeptical that Japanese women, and society, are so chaste. Just like moneyed people in the United States and Europe, I think the Japanese like to get down, if you know what I mean. When I visited I saw a store that just sold condoms and many adult video stores. In Japan, abortions are not stigmatized and the rate of HIV is low, so I highly doubt that young Japanese are waiting until marriage to get busy, again if you know what I mean.
Supposedly, only Americans see race; others just see nationality. However, here the Japanese admit that the author looks like them. They state that it's hard to think of her as American. I actually think Lo could have spoken of her ethnicity more. Because Japan has had imperialist tensions with China, did her interviewees in some way think of themselves as better than her?

Great Gift Idea.......2005-11-22
An entertaining book for all - not just parents. This would be a great gift for anyone who gets a kick out of intelligent humor. For those with young children, you KNOW how difficult it is to get through an entire book - what's great about this book is that each chapter is a story unto itself. I found myself laughing out loud (and in total understanding) while reading about the author's various parenting dilemmas!

Laugh til it hurts.......2003-12-25
Mr. Pinsky has unique perspective on parenthood and his razor sharp prose will keep you laughing for hours. I nearly wet my pants at one point. If you're a parent and up for a good laugh - read this book!
Smart and funny.......2003-12-19
I'm not even a parent, but I really enjoyed reading this book. It is both funny and insightful at the same time. The author describes various incidents and interactions with his daughter, and the resulting insights. It would be especially great for a new parent or someone with young children, but even people who aren't parents will enjoy it.
for all grandparents, aunts, uncles and parents.......2003-12-08
Anybody who has stuggled with or watched kids grow will find chuckles and some bellylaughs as the writer gives his slant on what we've all really seen as we've lived it. And, grandparents, you'll remember how things that go around come around.
Homedaddy is Great for Aunts and Uncles.......2003-11-13
Although I am a female with no kids, I am an Aunt who has occassional responsibility for my nieces and nephews. Homedaddy made me feel alot more confident about how can I interact with the kids and gave me greater respect (and sympathy) for my brothers and sisters. I reccommend this book to any Aunt or Uncle who is trying to figure it all out.
Book Description
Ian Carr's book is the perfect counterpoint and corrective to Miles Davis's own brilliant but vitriolic autobiography, providing a balanced portrait of one of the undisputed cultural icons of the 20th century. Carr has talked with the people who knew the man and his music best; and for this edition, updated since Davis's death, he has conducted new interviews with a number of jazz greats, including Ron Carter, Max Roach, and John Scofield. From the early New York apprenticeship with Charlie Parker, through Davis's drug addiction of the early 1950s, to the years (1954-1960) during which he signed with Columbia and recorded masterpieces with John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and Cannonball Adderly, Carr sheds new light on Davis's life and career. His reclusive period (1975-1980) is explored with firsthand accounts of his descent back into addiction, as is his dramatic return to life and music.
Customer Reviews:
Has some problems but probably the best biography of Miles so far.......2005-09-13
Ian Carr's MILES DAVIS: The Definitive Biography is one of the more meticulous lives of the great jazz innovator. Published first in 1982, it was thoroughly revised in 1998 to cover Miles' final years as well as shed greater light on his entire career.
A strong aspect of the book is Carr's access to various recordings which the average fan wouldn't have a chance to listen to, such as early projects in the 40s and concerts during the 1980s. Carr very thoroughly charts Miles' health problems and the horrendous squalor he was living in during the late 1970s, making the reader impressed that he held out as long as he did. The book is also well-researched, and Carr occasionally corrects mistakes made by other biographers, such as the claim that Miles recorded with Karlheinz Stockhausen (they never met). Carr knows the trumpet well and can speak on technical aspects of Miles' playing better than other commentators. One might also mention that the book is admirably typeset, and its ease on the eyes makes it a pleasure to read.
There are a few downsides to the work. Carr rarely attempts to show matters from the viewpoint of Miles' antagonists. His marriage to Cicely Tyson, for instance, is presented as if she was the one responsible for its demise. His coverage of the 80s too often is a dry counting of tour dates, and it would be nice to have some amusing anecdotes thrown in to allow the content to breathe. Also, the book holds no serious musicological analysis of Davis' work, although there are some superficial comments and some examples from various scores at the back of the book.
If you are looking for an overview of Miles' entire career that treats all of his phases fairly, from his early traditional jazz to fusion to the almost-pop of his 80s efforts, then Ian Carr's biography, in spite of its negative aspects, is probably the best available.
Great, exhaustive effort.......2003-06-30
Ian Carr's book on Miles is complete, fairly even-handed and really tries to capture Miles as both a Musician and a budding painter and importantly as an individual. It relates the large roller coaster of Miles decade by decade at the top of his game and then coming down, getting involved with seedier elements and then somehow surviving and coming back up to ascension. Anyone who respects the Jazz genre owes it to themselves to read this book if only for the history involved, because during all the twists and turns in Jazz, especially from the Bebop era on, Miles was there, and his place as a central character is assurred, among the Jazz Greats.
The only reason I just gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I read Miles' own autobiography a bit later, and although he throws f-bombs throughout that book, I feel that it is still a better book because it comes from the mind of the Man himself.. This is still a great chronology, definitely worth checking out.
Have read better Miles books.......2003-02-04
This was the 4th biography about Miles Davis I had read. I guess once you read 2 or 3 biographies about a person you don't learn much new information. Although well written I don't think this is the best account of Miles Davis life a fan could read. I recommend Miles Davis Autobiography or Milestones before reading this one.
Helpful insights into Miles the man.......2002-02-17
Describing any book as "definitive" is absurdly presumptious, especially when the subject is as well-known and widely discussed as Miles Davis. But Carr deserves to be credited with having produced a thorough and meticulous narrative of Miles' life and works. Frequently Miles' music is described to an excessively detailed degree, as if every single piece he recorded was a masterpiece. More judiciously selective analysis would have been preferable. The insights into Miles' working practices and relationships with his musicians are, however, of substantial interest to the jazz fan.
A stupid book.......2001-04-17
This a book for ..., the man Ian Carr is an ..., The comments he makes about western music are truly ..., I agree with the other reviews, he highlights his lack of musical knowledge when he attempts to discuss musical theory. This book is also very, very, very badly written, probably the worsed written book I've ever read. He doesn't write anything interesting about miles either.
Read the 'Miles Davis autobiography' it is a thousand million times better.

As a fellow Cigar smoker, I enjoyed Tomima's concise female based book. Of the basic 2 female cigar smoking books out there, Tomima strikes the more demure chord. Very nice detail on the history. Would have loved a bit more in the illustration side of things. ;) The Cigar Wench

Clayton Moore was the actor who fixed a burning image in millions of baby boomer minds and whose TV character spawned uncountable little white suits, cowboy hats, and black masks on children all over the world. Moore portrayed "The Lone Ranger" in the original TV series between 1949 and 1957. He became a modern immortal with the signature tune of Rossini's "William Tell" overture and his catch line "Hi Yo Silver!" This biography, written with Frank Thompson, author of Lost Movies, details Moore's career before and after his years with Tonto (he began as a trapeze artist), sketches in his personal life (three marriages), and relates how his fans were outraged when, in 1979, Moore was legally forbidden to wear his famous mask in public appearances.
Book Description
Every baby boomer in America knows who that masked man was. He was mysterious and mythic at the same time, the epitome of the American hero: compassionate, honest, patriotic, inventive, an unswerving champion of justice and fair play.
Customer Reviews:
Ah the great memories........2007-03-09
I was a bigger fan of the Lone Ranger on radio than TV, but only because I was away in school most of the years it was on the tube and missed a great deal. That is something I am trying to make up as I collect DVDs and is why I bought this book. I have also known personally two who worked with Clayton Moore in the past, serial queen Kay Aldridge and former rodeo star Beverly McDermott. Everything they said about this man is echoed in the book. A very honest upright straight shooter. I am also impressed by his arguments as to why a star should set an example. So different in Hollyweird today. We need actors and actresses today who have the high moral standards this man has shown. May God bless him always, here and in Heaven.
Hi Yo Silver, away!.......2007-02-09
This man, Clayton Moore WAS the Lone Ranger. I can say no more.
must read.......2005-08-03
An in depth history of Clayton Moore. A very informative perpective of a bye-gone age in Hollywood. I really enjoyed this book. A must read for Lone Ranger and TV western fans.
Lifelong fan.......2005-08-03
Like most of the others here, I'm a lifelong fan of the Lone Ranger, and Clayton Moore was my favorite Lone Ranger. I have a signed lithograph hanging in my living room.
I am also a huge fan of Hollywood biographies.
My biases being clear, I have to say that like everyone else, I loved Clayton Moore's story. He's a genuine good guy, has nice things to say about everyone he worked with, and always tried to find the good in people. People responded to him in kind, even in the days of hippie rebellion.
Clayton Moore's relationship with the character of the Lone Ranger is unique. He was typecast, but wanted to be typecast. After playing the Lone Ranger, it's the only character he ever wanted to play. Even Jay Silverheels had no intention of being Tonto forever. Moore spent the rest of his life going to schools, shopping malls, etc., portraying either the Lone Ranger or portraying himself as the Lone Ranger. He spent the rest of his life trying to embody the Ranger Creed. No other actor was as closely tied to a character as was Moore. Even his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame says both Clayton Moore and the Lone Ranger.
Even the stories of being fired for Season 3 of the TV show, being called back for Season 4, and the legal wrangling over the use of the mask were downplayed in favor of discussing his relationship with his fans, some of whom he met at both 5 and 50 years of age. His comment? The adoration in their eyes for the Lone Ranger was the same at any age.
If you were ever a fan of the show, the photos alone are worth the price of the book.
Also, if you need large print books, the print in this edition is quite large. No need to look for a large print edition.
A wonderful and kind individual.......2005-03-07
Claytom Moore had to be one of the most gentle men that I have ever known. He believed in The Lone Ranger and he lived by the values, and the code that his image stood for. I am proud to say that I have one of the few copies of this book that was autographed by this wonderful man.
