Book Description
Introduction to Optimal Estimation is an introductory but comprehensive treatment of the important topics of Kalman and Wiener filtering. In addition, least-squares, maximum-likelihood and maximum a posteriori (based on discrete-time measurements) estimation are developed, covering a broad range of techniques in a single textbook. Emphasis is placed on showing how these different approaches can be fitted together to form a systematic rationale for optimal estimation. The different matters to be addressed in actually computing estimates and characterizing the properties of estimates viewed as random variables are explained and underlined throughout. The text also incorporates study of nonlinear filtering, focusing on the extended Kalman filter and on a recently-developed nonlinear estimator based on a block-form version of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Introduction to Optimal Estimation is for use in a single course (or, with judicious pruning, a one-quarter course) on estimation by senior undergraduates or first-year graduate students. A number of the examples in this text were fashioned using MATLAB® and some of the homework problems require it. Students using this book will need to have completed a standard course on probability and random variables and at least one course in signals and systems including state-space theory for linear systems.

Book Description
More than a decade ago, world-renowned control systems authority Frank L. Lewis introduced what would become a standard textbook on estimation, under the title Optimal Estimation, used in top universities throughout the world. The time has come for a new edition of this classic text, and Lewis enlisted the aid of two accomplished experts to bring the book completely up to date with the estimation methods driving today's high-performance systems. A Classic Revisited Optimal and Robust Estimation: With an Introduction to Stochastic Control Theory, Second Edition reflects new developments in estimation theory and design techniques. As the title suggests, the major feature of this edition is the inclusion of robust methods. Three new chapters cover the robust Kalman filter, H-infinity filtering, and H-infinity filtering of discrete-time systems. Modern Tools for Tomorrow's Engineers This text overflows with examples that highlight practical applications of the theory and concepts. Design algorithms appear conveniently in tables, allowing students quick reference, easy implementation into software, and intuitive comparisons for selecting the best algorithm for a given application. In addition, downloadable MATLAB® code allows students to gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software tools for a wide variety of applications. This cutting-edge and highly interactive text makes teaching, and learning, estimation methods easier and more modern than ever.

Out of Print?.......1999-10-04
It is absolutely outrageous that the Eyebeam series is out of print. Example: Ratliff is in the tub singing Michelle Ma Belle, Eyebeam enters and says " is that ABSOLUTELY necessary?" and Ratliff innocently replies, "well no, but it sure makes me smell better." This was bar none the funniest comic ever done. OUT OF PRINT? Criminal.
Has the Great "Three Initial Corp" Series. Tour de force!.......1999-07-07
I'm the proud owner of the entire Eyebeam series. They are constantly out on loan. This book shows that humor can be brilliant, but not vulgar or cynical. Adults get it on a certain level and kids on another. Rare in that it has the nationally syndicated chracters from the Universal Features "Peaches" strip, as well as the ones that were too "grown up" for that strip, interacting together. Rod and Ratliff are developed in this book. I sure miss the old "Eyebeam" Strip..... This reminds me why.
Cartoons worth re-reading--intelligent and funny........1997-12-23
This book of Eyebeam cartoons contains some classics--Ratliff leading the cops to the mall parking lot because a windshield sunshade says "Help! Call Police!"; the one about the Night Pedestals for cats (cars parked along the curb); the sequence in which Three-Initial Corporation is taken over by Brand X.
Direct, clear humor. Unusual drawing style. Characters include lawyers, children, pompous yuppies, hapless students, and the all-time favorite--"Hank the Hallucination." Captures Austin's surreal reality perfectly.

Disappointed.......2007-03-27
Although the book looks like it would be good, we have not been able to get a product that is properly put together. Pages are missing or pages are repeated over and over. After several tries, we have given up on this songbook.
Great for every dead head.......2007-02-03
This book is awsome. Basically it is a bunch of covers but it gives dead heads the chance to play something that the common person might actuall know(how sweet it is, stir it up, shining star etc.)Great book, i recomend it

Massive change is hitting corporate America at a furious and escalating pace, writes Andrew Grove in
Only the Paranoid Survive, and businesses that strive hard to keep abreast of the transition will be the only ones that prevail. And Grove should know. As chief executive of Intel, he wrestled with one of the business world's great challenges in 1994 when a flaw in his company's new cornerstone product -- the Pentium processor -- grew into a front-page controversy that seriously threatened its future.
Book Description
Under Andy Grove's leadership, Intel has become the world's largest chipmaker, the fifth-most-admired company in America, and the seventh-most-profitable company among the Fortune 500. You don't achieve rankings like these unless you have mastered a rare understanding of the art of
business and an unusual way with its practice.
Few CEOs can claim this level of consistent record-breaking success. Grove attributes much of this success to the philosophy and strategy he reveals in
Only the Paranoid Survive--a book that is unique in leadership annals for offering a bold new business measure, and for taking the reader deep inside the workings of a major corporation.
Download Description
The founder of Intel, Andrew Grove is one of the great business leaders of our time--and 1997 "Time" magazine Man of the Year. Under Andrew Grove's leadership, Intel has become the world's largest chip maker and one of the most admired companies in the world.

Waste Of Time.......2005-11-25
This is by far the worst business book I have read in recent years. It is hard to believe that Andy Grove actually thought that this material was worth putting into a book. As other reviews have said, this book at most should have been a short article in Business Week...but even then it would require some actual content to make it worth reading. The best part of the book is the quotes on the cover from Steve Jobs et al. It makes me wonder if they even read the book.
save several valuable hours of your life- skip this book.......2005-10-19
Maybe I haven't read enough "management" books (though I do have an MBA), but if this is considered "great" for this genre- WOW. This entire book could have been summed up in a couple pages without losing any major points, but I guess you can't have a bestseller that way! One reviewer said it was too technical. Are you living in a cave? I found it condescendingly written- absurdly simple and dumbed down. Granted, it's over a decade old, but I doubt everyone was really that much stupider ten years ago.
All Fear the Status Quo.......2000-07-20
Andy Grove has verbalized the mindset that we must all develop to survive in the 21st Century. While his idea of constantly looking over your shoulder has always been applicable, the speed of the Internet economy requires that we do it much more frequently and penalizes us much more quickly if we do not.
Grove does a great job of showing how one man's crises is another's opporuntity and uses the term strategic inflection points to describe these periods of 10x change.
This book is a good reminder for anyone who thinks that what made them successful to this point is any guarantee that they will be successful in the future.
Nothing new here.......2000-07-07
This is something that any first year business student could have written. It is a fast read but it provides no new insights.
Want to be a great manager - Go to West Point.......1999-12-02
I was very dissapointed by this book as a lesson in management. The lessons learned are basic management and military strategy that every CEO should now. i.e. Basic lessons from the book: include understanding the nature of the battlefield (6 forces that affect business), recognizing change (strategic intelligence), listening to the troops in the field, making sure you're not insulated from the bad news, seperate the noise from real intelligence, have the courage to make changes, issue clear orders, re-evaluate and adjust as conditions change, be prepared to replace the top management (not for incompetence, but to get fresh perspectives (change the old guard and the old ways of doing things), Realize that your company runs on the quality of middle management (i,e NCO and junior officers in the military). Give them clear goals and empower them to act. I have a lot of respect for Andy Grove, and the insights into his business was great, but if you want a good management book, read a military strategy manual. There's nothing new here.

They're out there... and could be after you!".......2006-04-17
Great little book unless you are "unstable," then it could push you over the edge. Stalkers, Corporate Bullies, Gangs, Professional Criminals, the IRS and a Host of Government 'Intelligence' Agencies... are groups mentioned.
Interestingly the "how to fight back" are far from the "Get Even" and "Screw You" series by another author.
Best chapter (and point of the book) is "Awareness is the First Line of Defense" unless of course you are already freaked out, then skip this chapter AND the book.
There's also a useful Internet Resource listing in the book.
A great and useful read. Recommended.
Great Field Guide for the Police State!.......2004-07-11
Feral House, known for their usually ozone perforating titles such as The Octopus and Psychic Dictatorship in the U.S.A., have come up with something a bit more down to earth for us, The Professional Paranoid by H. Michael Sweeney. This practical manual thoroughly describes proven techniques on how to safely deal with potential snoops ranging from stalkers, corporate bullies, the IRS, private dicks to CIA spooks and spookettes. How to know when your being trailed, when your mail is being tampered with and if your phone is being tapped can be found in this intriguing and important survival guide. Women will find much useful information on how to avoid date rape and other forms of assault included in this very street smart book. Reading The Professional Paranoid has awakened this reviewer to some ultimately sobering facts:
1. FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) as enacted in 1978 and later expanded by Klinton under Executive Order #12949 as a response to the World Trade and Oklahoma City bombings, pretty much annihilates our rights to privacy, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, and a right to a fair hearing. 'Seven men can meet in a secret court, with no public record kept, to decide that, because of who you may have associated with (even accidentally or coincidentally)'
2. The NSA, the largest intelligence agency in the U.S. can pretty much intercept any phone call you make, e-mail you send or receive through technology that they themselves have developed, yet are somehow mysteriously immune to the surveillance laws that the rest of us are subject to.
3. FEMA has established a 'Financial Crimes Enforcement Network' of 'supercomputers designed to track every financial transaction of every citizen' Imagine the implications if they hook up with those literal outlaws at the IRS.
4. PROMIS is a software program that enables the CIA and other federal agencies to track you online. "If you call a police department or federal agency and they enter your name into a computer, the CIA knows about it. They can even alter the information. Who knows, you might suddenly be listed as 'armed and dangerous'."
Most impressive in this work is the abundance of information found in the appendix which spells out the staggering number of CIA and other surveillance fronts at large, ranging from the AAI Corporation to Mitre to Zenith Technical Enterprises. Also in the appendix is detailed technical information on bugs and other forms of surveillance technology often employed by the snoops at large. Updated information on the telecommunications and computer industry's collusion with the NSA to make their technology more surveillance friendly is also included such as clipper chips which enable 'secret electronic entrance into digital information systems' and the like. I found the information on pertinent web sites dedicated to exposing Big Brother also highly useful as well . I commend Mr. Sweeney for his courage as well as impressive thoroughness of the research he put into the making of The Professional Paranoid . Anyone who scoffs at the suggestion that surveillance isn't the problem its made out to be in the world of conspiracy should read and re-read this book for a much needed change of mind. Check out www.feralhouse.com and www. proparanoid.com for more info. if you dare.
Whistleblower's Applaud.......2002-02-22
I am a whistleblower in a state Supreme Court Case and must say that this book is all it purports to be. I used the text to help resolve many of the problems I was having dealing with a certain government agency for which I worked. The methods of self protection outlined can be of use to any whistleblower involved in a serious situation. Mr. Sweeney, I applaud you for this timely work.
good.......2001-09-21
My dad read this book back in 1984 and though it was
good because it was honest about what was going on back then.
One of the Most Useful Books I Ever Bought.......2000-12-05
When I was targeted by the Clinton Administration, I experienced several years of round the clock physical surveillance and harrassment and all manner of risks for which my experience on Wall Street and in Washington had not prepared me. This included friends and family who helped me during this extraordinary period also being targeted.
Thank goodness for H. Michael Sweeney and his book, The Professional Paranoid. To this day, I believe that this book helped save my life. This was a period when websites kept death lists of people who had been targeted and died. I sure did not want to end up on one of those lists.
Sweeney has lived through the real thing, bested it and his lessons learned can work for you, whether you are dealing with being targeted by the government, by private organized crime, or just a pesky landlord or neighbor. It's well written too.
Unfortunately, the time has come in American when many of us have to protect ourselves, our family and our neighbors without much help from law enforcement. In the face of covert operations by intelligence agencies or the wishes of drug cartels, local police hands are often tied. Local police can be as scared of the powers that be as we are, or as mystified by the latest "tools of the trade" such as non-lethal weapons.
H. Michael Sweeney can teach us how to "hold the line" despite what is happening and do it with a marvelous sense of humour. I recommend it highly.

Book Description
Xena: Warrior Princess chronicles the life and death (and afterlife) adventures of the fierce and fearless Xena as she travels through ancient imaginary lands. Leaping onto our screens in 1995 with the now-familiar battle-cry "Yi-Yi-Yi-Yi-Yi!", the show ran for six series, and its blend of drama, humour, hard-hitting (literally!) action and a knowing modern-day sensibility helped it to achieve mainstream cultdom.
Xena: Warrior Princess: The Complete Illustrated Companion is the only comprehensive, fully-authorised guide to all six series of the groundbreaking action-adventure show, and contains a complete episode guide, plus character and behind-the-scenes information, and details of Xena fandom, all illustrated with over 150 photos, including an 8-page colour section.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but could have been more extensive.......2007-05-19
Being that I own the Xena guide written by Robert Weisbrot,I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. What I got was a book that was not as extensive as it should have been. The individual episode summaries should have been more detailed than they were. If Weisbrot had written this one,no doubt they would have been. However,I did enjoy reading about the final four seasons, and for that I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Great Book!.......2004-01-12
Hello All,
I GOT THIS BOOK TODAY AND IT'S GREAT U KNOW...
YOUNG XENA
Depends on how picky you are..........2003-08-10
It's been two years since the series came to a close and ended it's shooting, and we finally have a complete illustrated companion to go along with it all.
With all the time we spent anticipating this book, I believe that it left a bit to be desired. The author of the book either did not do his or her homework very well or did not pay too much attention to detail when the episode guide was written. Each episode review was only three or four lines long, and there were a few mistakes on the episodes scattered throughout. IE-In One Against an Army, Gabrielle was shot by an arrow BEFORE Xena took refuge in the armory. This was actually a rather large point in the plot of the story, but the book states that Xena went to the armory and then Gabrielle was shot. For the episode "Many Happy Returns" the book explains that Xena and Gabrielle enlisted Aphrodite's help to help Genia "enjoy worldly pleasures." Weren't they trying to teach her to live her own life? You may like the episode guide better than I did if you aren't so picky, but I definitely recommend online fan written episode guides over the one in this book. They are usually more in depth and more accurate.
The rest of the book was alright. It has the genesis of Xena, a production history, an episode guide (both for the series and when Xena would guest star on Hercules), character reviews, a behind the scenes look at costumes, makeup, stunts and special effects, Xena's journeys across the globe, a Greek Mythology encyclopedia to help you keep the characters straight, and even a chapter just for the fans of the show. I've been a very avid Xena fan and collector since Xena was first on Hercules in 1994, and if you're like me then you've seen and read all of this before (not to mention having already known all of the information from having memorized every detail of every episode of the show *big grin*). It's nice to have all this in one book, but it's not anything new or exciting to those that have been fans all along. BUT it is one of those things that every xenite should have. I recommend it to all Xena fans, but with the warning of not to have your expectations set too high and the advice that almost everything (if not everything) from this book can be found online.

Programming C#: Building .NET Applications with C#
ASIN: 0596003617 |
Book Description
Written by experts on the Microsoft® .NET programming platform, ADO.NET in a Nutshell delivers everything .NET programmers will need to get a jump-start on ADO.NET technology or to sharpen their skills even further. In the tradition of O'Reilly's In a Nutshell Series, ADO.NET in a Nutshell is the most complete and concise source of ADO.NET information available. ADO.NET is the suite of data access technologies in the .NET Framework that developers use to build applications services accessing relational data and XML. Connecting to databases is a fundamental part of most applications, whether they are web, Windows®, distributed, client/server, XML Web Services, or something entirely different. But ADO.NET is substantially different from Microsoft's previous data access technologies--including the previous version of ADO--so even experienced developers need to understand the basics of the new disconnected model before they start programming with it. Current with the .NET Framework 1.1, ADO.NET in a Nutshell offers one place to look when you need help with anything related to this essential technology, including a reference to the ADO.NET namespaces and object model. In addition to being a valuable reference, this book provides a concise foundation for programming with ADO.NET and covers a variety of issues that programmers face when developing web applications or Web Services that rely on database access. Using C#, this book presents real world, practical examples that will help you put ADO.NET to work immediately. Topics covered in the book include:
- An Introduction to ADO.NET
- Connections, Commands and DataReaders
- Disconnected Data
- Advanced DataSets
- Transactions
- DataViews and Data Binding
- XML and the DataSet
Included with the book is a Visual Studio .NET add-in that integrates the entire reference directly into your help files. When combining ADO.NET in a Nutshell with other books from O'Reilly's .NET In a Nutshell series, you'll have a comprehensive, detailed and independent reference collection that will help you become more productive.

The best way to learn ADO.NET.......2007-08-25
The bitter, Faster, and Lighter way to learn ADO.NET , the book contains and explain ALL ADO.NET Classes in simple way , of course the book written by experts in Microsot .NET .
I advise every one who want to learn ADO.NET in the fastest time to Buy this book .
A long time Oracle and Mysql programmer learns the basics of ADO.NET.......2006-05-28
--A Concise Reference with only the useful information. ADO.NET really does take a different approach from the other database API's. I have worked alot with JDBC, MySql (via java and PHP), Oracle and ODBC. In ADO.NET, the concept of a disconnected Dataset forces you to rely heavily upon Microsoft's Object model. The alternative to this book seemed to be either: Search through MSDN's reference material Or Purchase one of the many books which regurgitate the steps in using the wizards. The MSDN reference material really did not show me the expected "idioms" or paradigms in writing function db applications. This book helped me to understand what is really happening beneath these opaque designs. It helped me to understand and solve some of the necessities in creating data driven ASP.NET DB applications.
Microsoft MVP 2005 - Visual C# loves this one.......2005-07-26
I own over 50 books on .NET including several on ADO.NET. This book is my favorite on ADO.NET. Thus, it is the one I use most often. It has a great blend of discussion, documentation, and code samples. It is much easier and more thorough than much of the MSDN documentation or most other books. I've yet to run into a situation where the answer I need isn't either in this book or gives me a great starting point to find that answer.
Virtually every ADO.NET oriented class, method, event, and property is covered.
This book is definitely worth purchasing.
Incredible!.......2004-04-28
I've owned this book for 3 days and cannot put it down! I have not been a big fan of O'Reilly over the years, but this book is "incredible". It goes into the detail that most books seem to omit and it's those details that we "developers" desperately need.
I would recommend this book to ANY and ALL .NET developers who are writing code that hits against a database. There are topics covered in this book that Microsoft's own MSDN and VS.NET help system seem to fail at properly explaining. It's because of this that I've found myself (all too often) going to codeguru.com and google groups to get answers to ADO.NET questions that this book actually covers.
My hat goes off to authors Matthew MacDonald and Bill Hamilton on a job well done.
Coming from a Visual Basic background and now working in VB.NET and C#.NET, this book should satisfy both the VB.NET and C# developer.
Excellent reference, and a good introduction to ADO.......2004-03-14
This book is classic O'Reilly. It's separated into three sections. The first being a thorough but brief introduction to all aspects of the API. The second section is an API reference. And the third a quick reference. This third section is included on the CD that comes with the book and will integrate into Visual Studio.
Don't expect the first section of the book, which is an introduction to ADO.NET to give you a gentle introduction to the subject. That's not the Nutshell form. If you don't know ADO at all you will want to buy both this book and an introductory book. If you know related APIs, or you know ADO.NET and you need a refresher or have weak spots you will find some new things in the first section. For me it was the support for disconnect access and also the integration with the XML features of SQL Server 2000.
Although this book stays true to the Nutshell form it is a little longer in the introduction than the usual. The introductory section is seventeen chapters and is almost half of the length of the book. So if you are an intermediate or advanced engineer I think you could probably learn enough ADO directly from this book without any other introductory book.
