4 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginner!.......2007-02-09

I knew nothing about the AVR when I bought this book. I just picked some books to start learning and WOW! It got me up to speed so that now I can program an AVR by myself. The only think I would have liked to see was more explaination of each of the codes used. But you can't get everything in one book.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good primer.......2006-05-13

I'm quite familiar with other uCs, so this one was a good one for explaining the details of the AVR and how it differed (specific pins, timing issues) from other uCs I've played with. I liked the reading style, and the code, though assembly, was easy to translate into C.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2004-12-23

This is a pretty basic book, maybe only 150 pgs (minus appendix and section with binary math refresher). There's no index (sigh). It's based on AT90S1200 and Tiny12, but more recent device types should be similar at the core level. It's a learn-as-you-go introduction, which beginners will probably appreciate. So you won't see chapters oriented by "flow control", "interrupts", "arrays", etc., but by example project. But it's got lots of example code and probably worth keeping around even for the intermediate/advanced user. Avrfreaks.com is often useful and it's free.

2 out of 5 stars "AVR: An Introductory Course"- like, for programmers?.......2004-06-16

Unfortunately, found this book to be primarily a programming book, and minimally useful from a semi-newbie hardware perspective.

Far better, and more in depth hardware and programming information is available for FREE at www.avrfreaks.com
Wish I'd known that before...

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction and a great buy........2003-04-02

Has it been a while since your last uP project? Get this book. Easy to read with lots of good examples. I/O, timers, UART, I2C and etc. Covers mostly the 90S1200 and Tiny parts. Morton points out where and what the differences are for other parts. Only problem I see is the organization. It can be difficult to find a particular section when using it as a reference. Reads more like a book than a reference which some may say is a good thing.

      Book Description

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a growing struggle has arisen between those who would like to repeal existing environmental policy and those who would like to see greater environmental protection. On both sides, however, many of the arguments remain grounded in ideology. This book attempts to moderate the conflict by exploring methods to accurately measure and assess the effectiveness of environmental policies.

Does Environmental Policy Work? examines our ability to assess the impact of environmental policies on the environment in particular, and on social welfare in general. The distinguished authors explore the theory of assessment, concentrating primarily on a conceptual examination of the evaluation process. They extend existing tools and identify alternative indicators and methods of appraisal. The focus then shifts to the use of these tools in real-world policy situations by applying them to a series of case studies from Africa, North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Although the authors base their assessment predominantly on economic efficiency, they also pay due regard to other interdisciplinary approaches and decision-making criteria.

This comprehensive exploration of the theory and practice of environmental assessment will be of great interest to scholars of environmental economics, ecological economics and environmental science. The book will also provide guidance and direction for practitioners in the fields of environmental policy and management on how to effectively measure the outcomes of environmental policies.

        Book Description

The 'Sound City Acid Test', originally made in 1965 as The Pranksters' venture into 'the world of The Beatles' is released for the first time on CD. Seventy-four minutes of readings, poetry, music and mayhem from the archives of Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs. Acid Test, Volume 1 documents their attempt to enact an acid test within the recording studio environment. After its release as a 1000-copy limited-edition LP, it was repeatedly bootlegged. This CD also features 'Vietnam Day 1966', a previously unreleased musical reconstruction (recorded in 1967) of the Pranksters' famous meeting with the Hell's Angels which subsequently launched the career of visiting Prankster, Hunter S Thompson.

I'll preface this review by saying that I'm an unabashed admirer of Kesey and the Pranksters and listening from that place, this is a significant recording. It's a perfect companion to the recently released videotape of the '64 bus trip. I realize that most rational folks will hear this as just so much noise but if you listen closely, you'll hear the spirit of the real revolution that went on in the fabled sixties.

4 out of 5 stars Not all are gathered..........2004-07-23

This is a very important book for me -- as a generation X-er myself (just on the cusp -- I missed the Baby Boomer generation by a matter of months), I can relate to much of what is contained in this book. The editor, Nathan Humphrey, at the time of this gathering was an aspirant with many of the problems and fears that I had when encountering the vocational process. How can you embrace a process that you fear, that you do not trust? How can you trust a process that belittles you, and fundamentally does not trust you? I regret to say that this is the reason why I am no longer a member of the Episcopal church; despite summa cum laude grades at my seminary and the feeling among all but three Episcopal clerics that I would make a good priest, the process was sufficiently manipulated by a few powerful people to keep me from even being permitted to ask the initial question, am I called? If ever there was a process that is need of overhaul, this is it.

Other writers in this text talk about community. Community is of vital importance in the church -- without it, there is no church. However, what constitutes community is different from generation to generation, and mainline churches (of which the Episcopal church is one) is only beginning to understand its need for change in different areas, while embracing tradition in others. This is never an easy task. My problem with the hierarchy of the church is that they are too quick to pass responsibility on to a vague concept of 'community' while holding all the power and authority amongst themselves. Various contributors speak to this issue, too. It will be a long time before there are any Generation X-er bishops, and given that the number of X-er priests is still a single-digit percentage, it is no surprise this book does not get more attention in official circles.

The topics discussed in this book include issues of race, gender, and bivocational ministry (funny, when one of my students asked a local bishop about this possibility, the student was told that this proved the call was not a valid call, so go figure...). The book looks primary at issues concentrating around ordained leadership roles, but can be instructive with regard to other roles, too. This is a book that should be read by every bishop, priest, deacon, vestry member, Christian educator, lay leader, seminarian, and interested congregation member in the church.

While I love this book in many respects, and find kindred spirits among the contributors to many of the things that I have felt, in my call to ministry, my experience as a seminarian, and my practice as a priest (another church ordained me, with the clear understanding that my heart was still Anglican), I am saddened that they don't take the issue of those lost to the church because of the problems more seriously. Perhaps it is because at their conference, the root of this book, there weren't many (or perhaps any) representatives of those of us who would give almost anything to be able to return to our church and be of service, but find that the requirements are set so high as to be impossible. This is a church that has the parable of the prodigal son as part of its standard lectionary -- however, the church could never be confused with the welcoming father in that lesson.

There is hope for the church, and this book exhibits this. However, the church needs to face the future with honesty, and that honesty needs to include those of us excluded.

GenX Religion is the first in-depth collection on this generation's religious experience. The contributors, mostly GenXers themselves, offer both a disciplined methodology and a valuable insider's sensitivity as they examine the differences between GenX religion and "traditional" religious avenues.

        this book rocks.

i've read alot of books about gen x and religion. this is among the best. i'd place it beside strauss and howe's "13th generation" as a seminal gen x work.

unlike many books by postmodern guru types, that offer anecdotal (and often inaccurate) quips about gen x, this book was written by serious scholars of religion and sociology. they actually went to real, authenitc gen x started and gen x led religious communities and studied them, in a more than superficial way... and documented how they actually lived out their faith and service to god, as postmodern believers.

the conclusions drawn at the end of the book are dead on and very helpful. if you really want to learn about authentic gen x religion, as it is actually being practiced by xers, read this book.

GenX and God is a down-to-earth discussion of the relevance of God for Generation X, but also for all generations. This book is creatively packed full of deep insights into our relationship with God--a relationship that in-turn informs our relationships with other people and the entire world. If you have any interest in spirituality or intergenerational relations, you need this book on your shelf!

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dated and not altogether insightful.......2000-10-03

First off the title is misleading. It should be Gen X & Jesus as Christianity is the only religion that the author cares to discuss. I guess Jewish and Muslim "Gen X-ers" can go get other books. Secondly the whole exercise is cliched. Pretty much everything said about Generation X has been said about any group of people between the ages of 18 and 25 who have only just begun to abandon cynicism. Third, Generation X and it's hip nickname GenX is such a horrible term to begin with and it's not completely Douglas Coupland's fault, but one would like to have someone to blame.

Ok, that said this book is a fairly average preacher manual for youth of America in order to answer a few questions posed and to clarify Christianity. Besides the title's hook, it doesn't say anything particularly original about either Christianity or the generation of youth. Worse is that it feels like the author is reaching. He sounds like one of those people who walked through high school with his Bible out, never dating or socializing, but who wanted to be with it anyhow.

It's an ok book and a pretty good one to give to a teenage fundamentalist, but it doesn't really live up to its title.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Angle for Generation X.......2000-02-09

A great book! Until this point, all Generation X books I've read are ABOUT the generation and contain ministry tips. But this book, while it contains some helpful demographic information, is written TO Generation X. It moves from discussion about the generation into action for the generation. You may or may not agree with everything Cox presents, but his fresh angles will definitely make you think! I especially appreciated his discussion of life as a project. At first, I was unsure of whether to purchase the book, but now I'm glad I did. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Right on Target!.......1999-01-22

Cox correctly outlines issues faced by Generation X, and he then brilliantly widens the picture to include God. He is both sociologically and theologically astute, and also very intuitive. Cox is obviously very in-tune with his generation. In fact, I am sure he must have had me in mind when writing the book! It is full of the relevance and hope that Xers like me need to hear, and it has significantly deepened my understanding of God! I liked it so much the first time that I am now reading it again!

4 out of 5 stars Theology from a GenX perspective!.......1999-01-21

I concur with the previous on-line reviewer that this is not a text on how to proselytize the GenXers (as if "they" are "other"!). But therein lies the value of this little book, for it does not apporach GenXers as "other," but rather explores Christian theology from a GenX perspective! Cox takes Sin seriously and does not candy-coat the gulf between God and mankind. But equally seriously, Cox proclaims the good news that God is for you! All this Cox does in a conversational manner, not in a persuasive lecture. I guess if a GenXer wanted to know what the Christian message is--and not be preached at or lectured--this is a solid start!

2 out of 5 stars the proselytizing side of Gen X.......1998-12-30

From the title of this book one gets the impression that this book is a Generation X perspective of God. This turns out not to be the case. It has more to do with the theological preferences of its author Kristoffer Cox. Mr. Cox comes from a Protestant background and offers up a spiritual scheme that is non-dogmatic and void of hellfire and damnation gibberish. His focus is primarily on the love of Christ and the establishment of God's kingdom. And this is what the overwhelming bulk of the book is about. There was one sliver of insight in to the lessons that Generation X could learn for the Christian faith. Examples of this are comparisons between Xers and Jesus were both often mocked and not taken seriously by those in control. Or the way Xers have inherited a damaged world and that an imperfect world is foundational to Christian understanding. But the notion of such ideas only gets scant attention as it is preceeded and followed by Mr. Cox's proselytizing. The weakest part of this book is attempts by Mr Cox to put at the heat of Gen X's problems a generational conflict with the parent gengeration of Baby Boomers. At best this attempt sounds much like the contrived notions that someone might adhere to after completing a high school sociology course.

        Book Description

Although not inherently corrupt, the American Idol television program has magnified a culture preoccupied with fleeting fame and image overload. Feeding off that frenzy, American Idols takes a necessary look at the false gods in modern society. The golden calf of Bible times may be gone, but in its place today are enslavements to consumerism, celebrity, sexual freedom, easy religion, and more. This timely book helps readers realize and overcome their own idolatries.

5 out of 5 stars A New Perspective on American Priorities.......2006-06-11

If you've ever looked at our culture and wondered why in the world it got this way, Bob Hostetler's book, American Idols The Worship of the American Dream, addresses the cultural and personal values that created it. Well-written, thoughtful, and easy to read, the book addresses the things we really think are important: how we look, what we have, comfort, instant gratification, choice, financial success...our modern American idols. As a mass media professor for the last 25 years, the book `rang true' in the fact that most of those `idols' are based on short-term satisfaction, what we can understand at the moment, and what "works" for us, because I teach about how those `idols' are consistently represented in modern media. Bob brings the discussion down to everyday experience and shows us very clearly how we may be accepting and creating idols without recognizing what we're doing.

A few years ago I placed The New Tolerance (by Bob Hostetler and Josh McDowell) on my recommended reading list for two of my undergraduate media courses, and like that book, this one is an easy read but with lots `meat' to really get a reader thinking about important issues. The students who chose to read it thoroughly enjoyed it and obviously learned a great deal from it. I expect the student reaction will be just as enthusiastic when I place American Idols on that recommended list this fall. While this book is written from a Christian perspective and would be perfect for study groups and Christian discipleship classes, it has strong cultural applications for every American. It has a lot to say about who we are as a people and a culture, and it challenges us to face the fact that we all should probably examine why we are the way we are.

American Idols The Worship of the American Dream is one of those special books on my shelf that will soon be well-worn and filled with multi-colored hi-lighting because I will refer to it again and again. It can be read, understood and have practical impact on the lives of teenagers, young adults, and those of us who are a little older than that. It is well-written, substantive, and grounded in the Word of God. Bob Hostetler shares new perspective and real truth about the idols of our culture in a down-to-earth, engaging way that motivates serious consideration about what we really think is important and why. This book is a valuable investment in time, money and contemplation. I strongly recommend it to students, teachers, parents and anyone interested how we determine our personal and cultural priorities.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging, yet easy to digest.......2006-01-06

This book is clear, concise, and very direct. The author has a way of placing truth in a context that is easy to understand and even better, easy to digest. I believe this book to be completely God inspired and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge in every chapter.I absolutely loved it-so much so I have decided to start a study with some people from work. The author has group studies available on his website at www.bobhostetler.com. I can't wait to see how much more God reveals to me through them.

5 out of 5 stars clear and on point.......2005-12-30

I had always known people tend toward idolatry. This easy-to-read (because well written) book brought the issue sharply into focus for me. It is worse than I care to admit. Thankfully he doesn't stop there. He knows how to make things right. I want to use it in Sunday school as soon as possible.

        Book Description

When users click on a menu item or a button in a dialog box, they're using a control-and every interaction with a control can shape their overall experience and satisfaction with your software. This hands-on guide teaches you how to use or modify the built-in, intrinsic controls provided by the Microsoft .NET Framework for your own applications-as well as how to build new controls from scratch-to deliver the most appropriate and efficient functionality for your audience. The author uses code samples built with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 2003 to illustrate how controls operate and how to add and arrange them on a Windows® Form or Microsoft ASP.NET Web Form. You'll learn how to manipulate controls for specific needs, as well as how to write your own custom controls to create the richest user experience. All the book's code is available online for reuse in your own applications.

2 out of 5 stars Not particularly useful for ASP.NET programmers.......2006-03-24

The book had no real vaulable informaiton for an ASP.NET programmer. The book similar to this, written in C#, is so much better even if you have to translate the C#. I do not recommend this book if you're working in the ASP.NET environment. I can not speak to WinForms and this book, but the C# book will work fine for both environments.

4 out of 5 stars The outstanding, and the ugly.......2004-09-30

This book is unusual in that, in addition to providing you with the information you actually bought the book for, you get lots of information about some pretty obscure .Net topics. Even better (assuming you're an experienced VB Developer), he doesn't waste so darn much space taking up topics you're already sick of reading about (controlling program flow, what is a class, and the like). He also mentioned in passing a couple of little gems in the SDK that I was unaware of. Of course, if you're not an experienced developer, why are you buying a book on controls? (save your money!) So John Connell gets a dozen stars for content.

The ugly: the book is poorly edited. There are a number of typographical errors, grammatical word omissions, etc. There are innumerable bugs in the book's code. There are also a number of omissions in the instructions, of a type such as instructing you to add a class without mentioning which component to add the class to, things like that. You'll want to get the download code from MSPress, so you can look at his code to see where he added a module, or whatever. Because I am an experienced developer, I found that the debugging required actually improved my learning (by keeping me awake), but I'm pretty sure an inexperienced programmer would get pretty frustrated. So: no stars to MSPress for the editing and testing of code! Bad job here, you guys, and considerably worse than the job you usually do.

If you already know how to program, buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, lacking in the ASP.NET Department.......2004-09-10

This was an excellent book for VB.NET Windows Applications (all examples were for windows, but the principals and some of the code would work for the web) in using Editors, Type Converters, Designers; a lot of the advanced topics.

Talking directly about ASP.NET and mobile applications was lacking a lot, in my opinion, but overall still I thought it was a great book to teach more advanced topics useful at design time.

5 out of 5 stars Learn nooks and crannys of the .Net Framework.......2004-07-02

If you think you know the framework, I suggest you take a look at Mr. Connell's book. He covers many undercovered areas in great detail. Isolated storage and encryption come to mind. In short, if you are looking for new material, I highly recommend this book. Its on a par with Mr. Connell's .Net Coding Techniques.

        3 out of 5 stars Okay book.......2004-06-01

Goes very deep into building .Net controls including some licensing models and some encryption. However, it doesn't talk much about the why of coding. John Connell just tells you how to do it. He does not explain why you would use certain methods or components.

So, if you wanted to know the "whys" of coding, this book is not for you.
