    Book Description

This book opens up new theoretical perspectives and practical possibilities to analyze the learning opportunities emerging in the transitional zones between educational institutions and workplaces. International contributors draw on a range of ideas developed within constructivistic, socio-cultural and activity theory and focus in different ways on the processes of transition, transfer and boundary crossing as central to learning, especially in vocational and professional education contexts.

The book begins with four chapters which locate the renewed interest in transfer and the emerging interest in boundary crossing in the context of knowledge society in terms of the following (a) the historical development of learning theories, (b) the theoretical advances made in socio-cultural approaches as regards learning, transfer and boundary crossing, and (c) sociological approaches to links between school and workplace learning. Part II contains seven chapters that present studies on learning and transfer in different domains of vocational and professional education. Part III presents three studies that describe and analyze learning in workplaces. The chapters of these three parts report on a range of empirical and developmental studies which have developed new 'tools for learning and transfer' in vocational education. The book ends with an epilogue consisting of a critical reflection on the earlier chapters in relation to how they approach two key transfer issues - the relationship between school knowledge and the knowledge acquired in working life, and the relationship between transfer and boundary crossing at the individual and collective levels.

The chapters of this book are based on original research undertaken by members and invited experts of a European COST Action A 11 Working Group 2 which includes researchers from twelve different countries.

      Book Description

Using an institutional and empirical approach, this book analyses the role of formal rules (law and regulations) and informal rules (norms, practices, and shared beliefs) in the Japanese economy. Through in-depth studies of corporate governance and finance, mergers and acquisitions, financial regulation, and markets for everything from venture capital to legal talent and organized crime, Milhaupt and West show that institutions play a crucial and heretofore overlooked role in the structure of the Japanese economy, which often is portrayed as being governed exclusively by interpersonal relations and bureaucratic fiat. The book demonstrates that despite outward appearances of a decade of stagnation in Japan, the formal and informal rules of the Japanese economy are changing significantly. The evidence suggests that in the mix of formal and informal rules that govern Japanese firms and set the incentive structure for other economic actors, law is gaining in importance. As these rules change, Japanese actors are responding, reshaping corporate governance and financial markets, eroding the bureaucracy's power. This book's emphasis on the centrality of institutions, institutional change, and responses to change portray a Japanese economy far different from those provided by previous accounts. It provides a wealth of previously unexplored data on the Japanese economy and legal system, and demonstrates the importance of a sound incentive roadmap for Japan's economic recovery and transition.

If you are a music lover and researcher like I am, you will enjoy this book. It is beautifully compiled with great art direction, photos, and well written text. It is well researched and the choices cover both the expected (Nirvana's "Nevermind", The Beatles "Revolver") to the unexpected (Johnny Mathis "Greatest Hits").

Definitely recommended for both the serious and casual music fan.

This book is truly beautiful to look at, and is great to browse through while you're listening to a new album. I like the colorful and important treatment it gives to classics and unsung masterworks from many different eras.

              Book Description

Taking up topics as diverse and timely as the work of FBI profilers, the pornography debates, feminist analyses of male supremacy as sexual abuse, the ritual meanings of fraternity gang rape, and the interplay of racial and sexual injustice, T. Walter Herbert illuminates the chronic masculine anxieties that seek compensation in fantasies of sexual coercion and in sexual offenses against women. His work offers an unusually clear view of this prevailing convention of insecure and destructive masculinity, which Herbert connects with contemporary analyses of male identity formation, sexuality, and violence and with cultural, political, and ideological developments reaching back to the nation's democratic beginnings.

Reading iconic nineteenth-century texts by Whitman, Hawthorne, and Stowe, and pursuing the articulation of their gender logic in Richard Wright's Native Son, Herbert traces a gender ideology of dominance and submission, its persistence in masculine subcultures like the military and big-time football, and its debilitating effects on imaginations and lives in our own day. In materials as diverse as Hannah Foster's post-Revolutionary War novel The Coquette and the Coen brothers' 1996 movie Fargo, this book taps into popular culture and high art alike to outline the logic of American manhood's violent streak--and its dire consequences for a culture with truly democratic and egalitarian ambitions.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on this Topic.......2003-07-24

Herbert has created a reader-friendly, firmly historicized and interdisciplinary examination of sexually volatile and violent masculinity in America. Without blinking, he charts the social conditioning that leads to ubiquitous masculine anxiety, sublimation, and disavowal. Herbert rejects biological or essentialist notions of violent manhood and shows how certain historical, social models offer a fertile breeding ground for manhood defined through warrior-like, emotionless, competitive, and misogynist views, including our modern, American democratic model.

This text is essential for anyone interested in feminist or masculinist studies, those working with violence victims or perpetrators, women who seek answers to the tacit hostility imbedded in their closest relationships, and men who desire freedom from a suffocating, stoic, and debilitating masculinity.
In totality, a book that not only defines the problem (as too many feminist and masculinist texts) but seeks out solutions.
To date, the best book on this topic.

              Book Description

During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the name DuMont was synonymous with the new medium of television. Many people first watched TV on DuMont-brand sets, the best receivers money could buy. More viewers enjoyed their first programs on the DuMont network, which was established in 1946. Network founder Allen B. Du Mont became a folk hero for his entrepreneurial spirit in bringing television to the American people. Yet, by 1955, the DuMont network was out of business and its founder and namesake was forced to relinquish control of the company he had spent a quarter century building.

The heart of David Weinstein's book examines DuMont's programs and personalities, including Dennis James, Captain Video, Morey Amsterdam, Jackie Gleason and The Honeymooners, Ernie Kovacs, and Rocky King, Detective. Weinstein uses rare kinescopes, archival photographs, exclusive interviews, trade journal articles, and corporate documents to tell the story of a "forgotten network" that helped invent the very business of network television.

An original and important contribution to the history of television, The Forgotten Network provides a glimpse into the dawn of broadcasting and the growth of our most ubiquitous cultural medium.

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Network: DuMont and the Birth of American Television.......2006-10-18

Extremely well written and virtually 100% accurate. David Weinstein is to be lauded for his well researched and well documented effort. This is must reading for all students of the history of media. The best book available about The DuMont Television Network, its trials and tribulations. It demonstrates how creative, early DuMont programming still influences network decisions today.

3 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the work, 3 stars overall.......2006-01-28

I've just completed reading this book, and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Well written and definitely well documented.

Why 3 stars? Well, excluding notes and so forth, this boook comes in at less than 200 pages, and at the current price (as I write this) of over $37, the price for this book seems very steep. At this rate, you'd have to mortgage your house to buy a copy of "War and Peace"! Anyway, the book seems expensive for what you get.

Secondly, I think it's rather obvious that the writer is a big fan of the DuMont network, extolling it's virtues at every turn, nothing they were the first to do this and that (and just about everything) in the pioneering days of television. It makes you wonder if the network would have cured the common cold if not for the budget-conscious Paramount (if you read the book, you'll understand that reference).

I'd also like to point out that the actual "history" of the network and it's creator really only takes up about the first 1/3 of the book or so - the remaining 2/3rds of the book are devoted mostly to the networks more notable programs - Morey Amsterdam, Captain Video, Ernie Kovacs, etc. I felt the actual history was rushed, but that may have to do with the scant actual "known" history of the network. And, to be fair, a lot of people may have found the actual history of the company dry, with class "A" and "B" shares, financing, etc., so this may actually be a positive for other readers.

Overall, a well-written and researched book, though a little expensive and (perhaps) positively biased for me to give it a better rating.

4 out of 5 stars Dying at dawn..........2004-06-17

At the dawning age of network television, DuMont was at least a player in the struggle to create programming that America's households would tune their newly purchased TVs into, in 1949, but by 1953 they were pretty much licked, and by the spring of 1955 they were out of the picture completely and literally.

Based on Weinstein's carefully researched and well-organized recounting of the history of DuMont, it is amazing that the network lasted as long as it did. The two major networks, NBC and CBS, had powerful lobbyists who would walk right into the offices of the FCC or the halls of Congress and unashamedly dictate regulations or rulings or legislation that openly favored
NBC and CBS, while making it difficult for ABC and impossible for DuMont to expand. ABC survived by forging strong ties to Hollywood studios, but an earlier alliance between DuMont and Paramount was nothing but complete disaster for DuMont. In fact, just about everything was a disaster for DuMont... they were even screwed horrendously by AT&T on coax cable rental fees.

DuMont had no money, but they did have creativity, born of genuinely bare necessity. Director of Programming James Caddigan and a bunch of people often literally hired off the street came up with innovative programming ideas which can now be seen to have shaped the direction of all network television programming in the decades to come. Yet even here, DuMont was doomed to lose. Once they had hold of a hot thing, they never had the money to develop it properly, or to retain the performers involved under contract.

Weinstein devotes the first three chapters of this roughly 220-page book to the rise and fall of Allan B. Du Mont as manufacturer and (disinterested) network head. He then turns to the areas in which DuMont's plow first broke the plains, with chapters on daytime TV programming aimed at housewives; on CAPTAIN VIDEO, the first and maybe the greatest of the live space adventure series of television's Golden Age; on DuMont's first successful variety host, Morey Amsterdam; and on its first superstar, Jackie Gleason. Also covered are DuMont's two popular and pioneering police procedural dramas; its surprisingly
successful venture into religious programming, with the charismatic and sinister Bishop Fulton J. Sheen; as well as an experiment with late-night programming guided by comic genius Ernie Kovacs.

Often in reading books on TV of the early 1950s one quickly realizes that the author's knowledge of the programs is entirely due to having read a few TV-Guide-type articles on the programs, from that era... in other words, he hasn't a clue. Weinstein, born in 1967, was well aware of this pitfall and he has made an energetic effort to locate and view kinescopes of presumably typical broadcasts of each of the programs he discusses. As a result, he can describe in detail the unique signatures that DuMont's always low budget and often great creativity brought to their successful series.

The book is carefully footnoted, nicely indexed, and professionally bound and printed. Misprints are very few. One of the strangest is the replacement of the word "sight" by "site" in a few inappropriate spots! Recommended to anyone who remembers the heady and heroic days of the Golden Age of Television, or is curious about it.

5 out of 5 stars More than just Dumont.......2004-06-09

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in television and media history, for one, but also popular culture in general. It is well-written, accessible, interesting . . .every time i was thinking of a comment or question, the author seemed to read my mind and addressed my thoughts within a couple of paragraphs. I wish I still taught media studies--I would have my upper-level and grad students read this book, especially for its admirable avoidance of acadmic jargon. Weinstein finds a way to speak about the formation and growth of early television that is clear, informed and makes me think differently even about the television i watch today, even about contemporary media. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book covers all the steps necessary to get your VPN up and running, but it was written years ago and Microsoft now has management software, such as ISA, which didn't seem to exist when this book was written, and which makes setting up VPNs even easier than by following this book.
