Bumper to Bumper: The Complete Guide to Tractor-Trailer Operations
ASIN: 0892624876 |
Book Description
Camionaje: Manual del Camionero de Tractor-Remolques Libro de Ejercicios has been developed to address the increasing demand throughout the US for tractor-trailer materials in Spanish. The Spanish version of the popular Tractor-Trailer Handbook/Workbook has been successful in teaching Latin-American students throughout the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South America. Now students can learn the same complex concepts from the English version in their own familiar language before tackling the actual reading required to pass CDL tests or drive commercial vehicles in the US. Written at a 3rd -6th grade reading level for ease of understanding, the Spanish translation addresses not only the body of knowledge a driver needs to know, but it also teaches the procedures that, with practice, will enable the student to become a skilled driver. This book stresses the importance of developing the traits and behaviors that characterize true professionals, as tractor-trailer drivers are placed in the unique position of being entrusted with expensive equipment and cargo, as well as representing the industry to the public at large. Content also includes good health and safety practices that drivers should follow for success on the job.

After Driving School, I brought a copy on my truck with me........1999-07-29
This book gives excellent coverage of the majority of issues covered in truck driving school. I highly recommend it for people desiring to drive or even those just interested in learning. It is interesting, well layed out and very to-the-point. After completion of driving school and passing the cdl, it is still a valuable resource to keep in the truck.
Book Description
Throughout the 1990s the US expanded its lead over other advanced industrial nations in terms of conventionally measured per capita income. However, it is not clear that welfare levels in America have grown concomitantly with per capita income, or that Americans are necessarily better off than citizens of other advanced countries. The contributors to this volume investigate to what extent welfare has increased in the United States over the postwar period and provide a rigorous examination of both conventional measures of the standard of living, as well as more inclusive indices.
The chapters cover such topics as: race, home ownership and family structure; the status of children; the consumer price index; a historical perspective on the standard of living; worker rights and labor strength in advanced economies. In addition, they explore two economic systems delivering the goods - the free enterprise system of the United States and the European social welfare state. They then present international comparisons and highlight the relative advantages and disadvantages of these two systems.
This provocative and accessible volume answers the intriguing question posed by the title and will be of interest to economists, sociologists, policymakers and policy analysts, as well as students of these fields.

Book Description
Blues with a Feeling explores the life, times, and musical creations of a founder of the Chicago Blues style. Little Walter revolutionized blues harmonica playing, and is generally recognized as the greatest innovator in modern blues. Beginning in the early '50s as a sideman with the legendary Muddy Waters, Walter appeared on many of Muddy's classic recordings through the mid-'60s, even after striking out on his own. Walter had several hits, including the #1 R&B songs, "Juke" and "My Babe," and his distinctive, heavily distorted, amplified harmonica style has been influential on all following generations of players. But his life was fraught with tragedy; he died young at the age of just 37, after years of hard living. For years, Walter's life story-even the exact names of his parents and his date of birth-have been shrouded in mystery. Now a trio of blues researchers have unearthed new information about how Walter lived and created the music that made him famous. Blues With A Feeling is an important addition to the literature on this distinctive musical style, and a must-read for any fan of the blues.

Genius of blues and harp.......2007-01-23
A book that finally reveals the true genius of Walter Jacobs and those who emulate him. As a decade long band mate of Joe Lee Bush who learned directly from Walter as noted in this book, I can say with authority that this book really provides a deep view into the man and his incredible talent. All the bands I've ever been a part of, Southside Jukes,The Superstitions,Them Junko King Hats, Magic Blues Band, Spike Driver, Blue Comets and some others have done Walters songs with huge respect and awe!
This book is an authentic look into the blues master of the harmonica Walter Marion Jacobs. You just must read it to understand the man and the music fully. Cudos to these three authors, what a collabration! John A. Williamson
OUTSTANDING!.......2006-04-14
Remarkable job by a trio of authors who really did their homework. I read it when it was first published and have gone back to it many, many times since for reference. I'm actually in the middle of reading it again in its entirety, something I very rarely do with any other book. If you're looking for insights and the scoop on the great Walter Jacobs, look no further. Buy this book now, blues people.
The man behind the legend is revealed.......2005-08-10
Since Little Walter died in 68 it might have been an enormous amount of work to put together all the information offered in this book, which succeeds in revealing who was the man who was behind the legend.
The book is fascinating at least for somebody, who like me is very into the blues and is an amateur harpist.
Too questions for the writers (because not enough clarified in the book): why Chess asqued Little Walter to play acoustically in the 60?.Is there more information about the lung troubles that Little Walter had at the end of his life, and made it difficult to blow his harp the way he used it, for more than 2-3 songs, as quoted in the book?
The Great Dark Story.......2005-04-25
On a par with "Bird" the movie by Clint Eastwood.
Need I Say More!
Fascinating ..........2004-07-28
I have been a Little Walter fan for many years. It's apparent that Tony Glover and his co-authors are, too. They have done a wonderful job of researching Walter's life and telling his story. I also learned a lot about Walter's contemporaries, like Jimmy Rogers and Muddy Waters (to name but a few). And, I have new respect for Leonard Chess, who helped create the Chicago blues sound, and who nurtured those who played it. The discography at the end of the book was very useful to me.
What would make the book better? It would be an accompanying boxed set of CDs with most of the tracks listed in the discography. I have put together my own set of about 50 of them.
Congratulations to the authors.

Repetitious and unenlightening........2006-10-10
As an American perplexed by the phenomenon of English soccer hooliganism I purchased this book with the expectation that it would shed some light on this violent British subculture. Reading it proved I was wrong. All the authors have done is ask the same identical questions to a number of former hooligans and record their answers. After you have read the first few entries there is no need to continue as all the responses are similiar.
One would have hoped for a better written explanation of the history and possible causes of this aberrant behavior but you won't find it in this book. A waste of money in my opinion.

Read On Down!!!.......2006-06-02
There are just so many different television shows that appeal to just about everyone. While primetime has accumilated huge success recently with shows like Desperate Housewives, and reality shows like American Idol, prime time has had almost everything come full circle all over again. That also has happened with game shows as well. With the recent prime time television success of Deal Or No Deal, The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectaculars on CBS, and the celebrity-themed Game Show Marathon with Ricki Lake, game shows have definitely shown they are still surviving. For those who want to know what made a game show what it was, can find it right here.
The Encyclopedia Of TV Game Shows, is a glimpse that displays what made a definitive game show, a game show that was unique past and present. The book gives details for each of the hosts and hints and tidbits that you may not have known about the game shows and their hosts, such as The Price Is Right. Did you know Young & The Restless actor Doug Davidson who plays Paul Williams actually hosted a short syndicated version of Price Is Right in 1994? It is absolutely true, and did you also know that it also displays those game shows specially designed for kids from the Nickelodeon network like Guts, Legends Of The Hidden Temple, and Double Dare. They are showcased as well in here. The book delivers well about each game show, and doesn't overlook any show that was made a huge sccess during its heyday, and those lesser-known classics like Supermarket Sweep and Blockbusters.
All in all, The Encylopedia of TV Game Shows is a real delightful purchase for any die hard fan of game shows like myself, or for those who have the feeling of classic television nostalgia. I absolutely enjoyed this book, and it is a delightful purchase. Final answer, get this book or get zonked!!

I was dissapointed in the accuracy of information in "The Enycyclopedia of TV Game Shows". While the selection of photos from Schwartz's and Wostbrock personal collection is nice; the inaccurate information is something else.
"Sale of the Century" is one page with such misinformation; many other entries have inaccurate information as well.
Well the effort is nice; I'm afraid the authors need to leave with some nice parting gifts.
The essential book for fans of games, game shows, and TV .......2004-12-10
"The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows" is the bible to game shows. Over 500 game shows are recorded in this book, full of information to rack your mind on game shows. Classic favorites from yesterday such as "What's My Line?", "I've Got a Secret", "Beat the Clock", "Strike It Rich", and "Twenty-One" are included with current favorites such as "Wheel of Fortune", "The Price is Right", "Jeopardy", "Family Feud", "Hollywood Squares", and "Pyramid". Included also is information on the celebrities who guest stared on the game shows, the personalities and a synopsis of their careers, airdates of the shows, what network they were on, the rules, the different versions, and even the prizes won and funny moments or bloppers that happened on the show. The book also includes information on awards won, a tribute to Mark Goodson, a brief history of game shows, and over 170 photographs to help you remember. The only negative things about the book was that some shows were short-changed ("Press Your Luck" for example, they should have talked about Michael Larson and the different whammies), and it hasn't been updated, so some shows are MIA ("Millionaire", "Weakest Link", "Blind Date", updated versions of old shows, etc.), but these are minor things that don't hurt the book much at all. In 60 seconds and for the grand prize:
-How many shows did Bill Cullen host?
-Who hosted "All-Star Blitz?"
-What game show was on CBS in the 1990's for only one episode?
-What three game shows did game show announcer Johnny Gilbert host?
-What was the orignial format of "Wheel of Fortune?"
-What host brought the Beatles to L.A.?
-What game show had a town named after it?
-What game show was made into an ice cream by Baskin-Robbins?
You will learn the answer to these quesions and more by reading this book. It's a lot of fun and you won't be able to put it down.
A Most Neglected Chapter of Television History!!!.......2003-12-01
One of the most sadly neglected styles of program in all of television history has been the TV game show. Despite the fact that throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, one or more of the top rated shows on TV has been a game show, whether "What's My Line" or "Wheel of Fortune," the format has been criticized by lovers of "serious" television as being "exploitive" of women, "anti-intellectual trash" or "merely entertainment" (as if entertaining the public is a bad thing.) However, The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows proves that these charges are, for the most part, without merit. In fact, during the medium's earliest days in the 1950's, some of the wittiest and most urbane shows were panel shows, i.e., a type of game show featuring a panel of celebrities, and not just movie stars, either! Great minds from the worlds of publishing, journalism, and the theatre such as Bennett Cerf, Abe Burrows, and Dorothy Kilgallen were regular guests into our homes each week as well. (The notion that game shows were "trashy" probably came from the popularity of the mostly horrible Chuck Barris-produced shows of the late sixites-early seventies, such as The Gong Show, The $1.98 Beauty Pagent, and Three's a Crowd. Thankfully, unlike Goodson-Todman and Merv Griffin, he does not rate his own chapter in this book.) Every single game show produced from the late 1940's until 1999 is covered here, and most are given their proper amount of space. (A few, such as Press Your Luck, seem to be shortchanged, but only a few.) An update is absolutely necessary as of this writing, as the game show has just made a marvelous comeback, thanks mostly to the success of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Also, a little more space might be devoted to individual personalities, such as the great Bill Cullen, arguably the greatest and certainly the busiest host in history, and a heartwarming success story in his own right. (He overcame polio at an early age, which left him with a permanent limp; if you watch his shows carefully, he is almost never shown walking.) But, these are minor quibbles. The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows is a great book for game show novice and aficionado alike, and is a welcome addition to a most neglected chapter of television history!

Book Description
When they first told you that forecasting sales would be part of your job, did you feel just the tiniest bit of panic? Did you momentarily consider consulting the Yellow Pages for listings of “Psychics” or “Tea Leaf Readers”? Well, fear not. Excel Sales Forecasting For Dummies can help you predict the future without incense or a crystal ball.
Excel Sales Forecasting For Dummies shows you how to use the number one workbook program, Microsoft Excel, to predict trends and future sales based on something not quite so ethereal—numbers. You use data about the past to forecast the future. Excel provides all sorts of tools to help you do that, and this book shows you how to use them.
From recognizing why forecasting is a good idea to making sense of exponential smoothing, Excel Sales Forecasting For Dummies has you covered. If you have a basic grasp of how to use Excel, you’ll be ready to discover how to
- Select and use the right forecasting method for your business
- Choose and arrange data in lists, then manage that data with pivot tables
- Filter lists and turn them into charts that illustrate what’s going on
- Find relationships in your data
- Use Excel’s Analysis Toolpak feature to create forecasts automatically, or venture into advanced forecasts using worksheet functions
- Gain more control over your forecasting and target specific types of predictions
- Use moving averages and predict seasonal sales
Written by Conrad Carlberg, a nationally recognized expert on Excel who also has experience in sales and marketing, this friendly guide gets you up and running quickly and easily. You’ll soon be setting up a baseline you can chart and label, summarizing data with pivot tables, making forecasts based on regression, understanding correlation, and discovering how smoothing lets us profit from our mistakes. You’ll find your confidence in your ability to make sales predictions has soared right off the chart.
Customer Reviews:
I was impressed with what tis book could offer.......2007-02-03
If you are new to forecasting and want to learn forecasting in a breeze, this is the book for you. If you like to use excel spreadsheets and want to play with data, this book gets you started in the right path. The book teaches you 3 types of forecasting techniques ( moving average, exponential smoothing and regression forecasts) and explains how to use excel functions to use these techniques.
In fact I have used the concepts like exponential smoothing and regression analysis on spreadsheets based on the book at work and at school.
You will like this book if
1. You are new to forecasting and want to learn in less than 24 hrs.
2. Like using excel formula functions.
3. Like to analyze statistical data
4. Want to develop simple to use forecasting models for your work or for your school project.
Average Information with Zero "WOW" Factor.......2005-08-31
I was expecting new and interesting ideas from this book, but was disappointed. If you truly have no idea how to find a sales baseline for your business or don't know how to track trends, this book is for you. If you are like me (you know the basics but were trying to find a more thorough approach), I wouldn't buy the book.
A Unique and Valuable Book.......2005-08-29
I read the book from cover to cover and was thoroughly enlightened. From a content perspective, the book is first rate. Carlberg not only explains how to forecast, but he also clarifies the pros and cons of the various methods, explains how to reduce forecasting error, and offers excellent insight into regression and the other statistics involved in making and evaluating a forecast.
Carlberg also masterfully integrates theory with practice by clearly explaining how to best utilize Excel for forecasting. I consider myself a very advanced user of Excel, but nevertheless benefited from Carlberg's sophisticated understanding of Excel. He provides an excellent overview of the pros, cons, and pitfalls of using the Analysis Toolpak vs. spreadsheet modeling, and offers a number of arcane Excel tips that I haven't found elsewhere. For example, despite years of Excel experience, I never understood (or, more accurately, noticed) the difference between a `Category Axis' and a `Value Axis' in an Excel chart.
I almost gave Excel Sales Forecasting four stars, for one important reason: The book was poorly organized. The main topics in the book - moving averages, exponential smoothing, and regression - were broken up into too many pieces, such that each topic was covered multiple times with a lot of unnecessary repetition. I realize this is, to some extent, the nature of Dummies books, which are not necessarily meant to be read cover-to-cover. But as a result, I often found myself needlessly re-reading material several times and, conversely, often had to flip back several chapters because I had forgotten some of the nuances of one of the methods by the time I got to a more advanced section. Having just finished the book, I still feel like I need to review it one more time, by topic, to put all the `pieces' back together in my mind.
With the exception of the final rant above, the book is outstanding and provides an insightful introduction to someone like myself who knew nothing of forecasting.
I'm not one to normally quote old sayings, but this book brought to mind the Chinese (Confucius) proverb: "I hear, I forget. I see, I remember. I do, I understand." Learning forecasting via Excel helped strengthen my understanding. The author and Wiley (the publisher) deserve a lot of credit for producing this unique and valuable book.
If "For Dummies" Means Comprehensible..........2005-05-15
If "For Dummies" means, clear, comprehensible, well illustrated, and fun to read to boot, then "Excel Sales Forecasting for Dummies" is true to its name. When you put together a guide to one of the most powerful and useful pieces of software in any company's arsenal with the genius of Conrad Carlberg to lead even the neophyte through the intracacies of sales forecasting, the combination is downright unbeatable. Carlberg has won awards for a string of some of the best "how-to" books on EXCEL and Microsoft Office. This new one gets my personal award for "best EXCEL guide of the year."
A book I've needed for a long time.......2005-05-06
I know that Dummies books are supposed to be easygoing and offer a lighter tone than most, so I was surprised to see this topic getting the Dummies treatment. I'm glad to report that it works. Excel Sales Forecasting is very reader-friendly, and it demystifies intimidating concepts like "exponential smoothing" and "mutiple regression." I've done a lot of numeric analysis but not much forecasting, mainly because the available texts are so dense and inpenetrable. No more! This book provides the material I need to understand, clearly and with useful detail and examples. It covers the basics and also dips into some more advanced topics. It considers not just the number crunching aspects, but also the business context that you're forecasting into. And it's fun to read! We dummies have a secret: we're smart enough to get books written for us that don't make our eyes glaze over. This one makes the grade.
