The Design and Evaluation of Physical Protection Systems
ASIN: 0750673036 |
Book Description
CCTV for Security Professionals provides the information necessary to design the ideal CCTV system. The chapters are stand-alone sources of information on their subjects and are presented in logical sequence to guide the reader from basic principles to more complex for a complete system understanding.
In his straight-forward and informative text, Alan Matchett approaches the camera systems from the user's point of view, providing the security manager with the knowledge to discuss the system, its desired features, and the areas of design concern within the context of an organization's business model. This can prove to be invaluable when evaluating an existing system, the use and components of a given system, or in evaluating a system design proposed by a vendor.
Installers and service personnel will benefit from the functions and possibilities that are available with the various components and by gaining an understanding of their customers' needs. Newer technicians will learn how to set up the system properly, and can familiarize themselves with the technologies that go into a CCTV system.
Security equipment sales personnel will also gain a better knowledge of the customer's needs as well as learn to determine exactly what questions they should be asking the customer and what the customer's responses mean. In this manner, the book will offer invaluable tips to ensure customers get exactly what they expect in a system.
* Provides a detailed explanation of CCTV components and the technology behind analog and digital CCTV systems.
* Establishes a "common language" for security professionals, CCTV system designers and sales personnel to use as a basis for system design.
* Provides a clear explanation of the design process and design principles.
Customer Reviews:
The book was in good condition delivery was bad!!!.......2006-08-24
I order the book with expedite service, the book never arrived. But at least Amazon, responded and took care of the situation. I received the book a day before I needed and was able to work my task.
Other than the delivery problems, the book was in good conditions.
This is only one thumb up.
Excellent review of video surveillance design and app's.......2005-06-03
"CCTV for Security Professionals" does a great job of reviewing design and application guidelines for video surveillance. It is comprehensive, but not complex. The book is targeted to an audience familiar with video security requirements who desire practical guidelines, not detailed engineering checklists.
"CCTV for Security Professionals" begins with older VHS tape-based analog technologies and moves through more advanced digital disk-based applications--but the real value of the book comes from a discussion of requirements for camera selection, placement, and lighting. The book is useful as an overview as well as a reference.
Really thorough & helpfull!.......2004-12-01
It is very concise & thorough explaining the different terminologies used by different systems, pros & cons, how to plan according to the different purposes, uses, areas, locations etc.. I would highly recommend this book, for anyone to buy before planning on buying a CCTV equipment.

Book Description
The effects of digital technology on the security industry require constant vigilance by security distributors, sales staff, and installation professionals. Today and for the foreseeable future, all security professionals must have at least a basic understanding of digital technology. Digital CCTV addresses this new challenge.
Topics convered include compression variables such as Lossless and Lossy, which are explained by reviewing Huffman and Run Length Encoding (RLE), and by relating these forms of compression to ZIP and Stuffit, which are commonly used in personal computers. A review of JPEG, motion JPEG, MPEG and wavelet compression schemes among others, with a comparison of the merits of each, is also provided. As Digital CCTV traces the stream of digital video flow from the computer industry through compression, transmission, display and storage, and explains how analog video signal is converted into a digital signal, the reader will learn and understand the mysteries of digital science.
* Explains industry concepts, acronyms and buzzwords acurately and clearly
* Covers history, current complexities, and the future effects of digital science
*Provides practical information about how digital video works, how digital video is stored and transmitted, what digital systems can and cannot accomplish, and what to expect from digital video equipment in modern CCTV systems

This is a collection of stupid technical support calls, gathered from all over the web; the ones that are dreaded the most. Here is your chance to see what the world's biggest idiots have to say.
Customer Reviews:
Great tech book.......2005-08-16
I worked with Tim at what is now Client Logic/Service Zone, Lake City, Florida and know the stories that come from tech support. This was a great book I did see a few of my calls in there as well so that made it real funny to me. Once again Great Book must have for all end users to know what they sound like.

You've seen all this before.......2004-01-11
If you've read anything online about Tech Support and dumb computer users, then you'll already read this book.
I had high hopes of reading some funny, new, interesting stories. This book was a big disappointment. I don't think there was anything here that I hadn't already seen online at sites like www.idiotwatchers.com
I was hoping for something more like Computerworld's Shark Tank.
At any rate, save yourself some money and just look for items like this online. You won't miss a thing.
I think i'm the tech in some of these lol.......2003-03-30
Tim was a level 2 tech where I work. Some of these stories are straight from there. This book should be shipped with every computer with a disclaimer that reads:Unless you can honestly say that you will not be a canidate for the sequel of this book and are not under the effects of alcohol or medication and none of the walls are padded in the room you're in do not call technical support you will be transferred to the id10t (pronounced- eye dee ten tee) queue. :P
This book is hilariously funny! I can't wait for the sequel! (there will be a sequel right tim?) James
A 'laugh out loud' look at dumb computer users.......2002-12-31
I just got my copy in the mail today, and I can't stop laughing. When I was a computer tech, I thought I heard it all - apparently not. The stories in this book are a real treasure for anyone who uses a computer or works in customer service. It's also a fun read - one of those books you can open to any page and just start laughing out-loud. Highly recommended.
Painfully funny.......2002-12-31
To anyone who has ever worked as a tech or just tried to help a retarded friend figure out how to play an MP3, this book will bring back some pretty painful memories, but at least this time, you get to laugh at someone else!!!
Book Description
David Hykes has helped to introduce the "throat singing" of Tuva, Tibet, and Mongolia to western audiences and has also created a world of sacred music called the Harmonic Chant. This latest CD features eight profound compositions that open the listener to incredible states of expanded consciousness aligned with the vibrational frequencies of the cosmos itself.
Customer Reviews:
Featured in "Jacob's Ladder".......2006-09-09
Interesting music and sounds....portions are featured in the excellent movie "Jacob's Ladder" soundtrack.
beautiful and profoundly rich.......2006-01-17
The recordings on David Hykes's CD Harmonic Meditations capture some incredible performances of improvised vocal music in acoustically rich spaces including a cistern in Seattle and the atrium of the World Financial Center in New York. The vocal trio pieces are stunningly beautiful and harmonically rich, and the larger group ensemble pieces incorporating sparse middle-eastern instrumentation express a searching, yearning or longing that characterises the very best in art.
Great stuff.

Book Description
The trauma of war and cold war, the shattering revelation of the murder of millions of European Jews, the discovery of nuclear fission and the use of an atomic bomb on civilians at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Great Depression that threatened to return any day--these were the events that held Americans in a decade-long state of anxiety. Never before had progress seemed so fragile, history so harmful or so irrelevant, science so lethal, aggregation of power so ominous, life so full of contingencies, human relationships so tenuous, the self so frail, humankind so flawed. In this highly regarded volume Graebner examines American culture from a variety of perspectives, encompassing art, architecture, film, literature, music, dance, pop culture, and political and scientific thought. His compelling and original analysis recreates an era of anxiety and ambiguity in which Americans felt pulled inward, toward the self, and outward, toward an all-encompassing universalism, in their search for reassurance and stability.
Customer Reviews:
A decade of uncertainty haunts the world's newest superpower.......2005-09-27
The author's purpose in writing this book is show that - despite its great military, scientific, and economic achievements - the 1940s failed to generate within the American spirit any of the expected optimism, confidence, and security that would presumably flow from its newly acquired superpower status. Graebner's account claims that this national insecurity smoldered beneath the surface even as America rallied to conquer the Axis powers during World War II and held firm against the encroachment of Soviet communism during the subsequent Cold War. The 1940s are characterized as a decade in which our ascendancy on the world stage occurred against a backdrop of cultural angst and self-doubt.
Graebner argues that the trauma of World War II, the horrible revelation of the Jewish Holocaust, the unimaginable atomic forces unleashed by science upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the feared return of the dreaded Great Depression precipitated a national malaise by creating a perception of man's powerlessness against these historical, technological, and economic forces. Racial unrest, post war labor strikes, obsessive concern over sex crimes and UFOs, the cynical portrayal of the anti-hero in the film noir movies genre, the popularity of self-help books, and emergence of a national religious revival were specific manifestations of America's insecurity.
On a more personal level, two additional sources of anxiety are identified by Graebner. First, American men were torn from home and placed in harm's way on the great battlefields of Europe, Africa and Asia; a process reversed with equal abruptness following victory. "Last year it was kill Japs and this year it's make money!" was the frequent lament of these returning warriors as they attempted to cope with their radically changing roles.
Secondly, millions of American women who had successfully tackled the industrial demands of the war were told to make way for their returning heroes and return to more traditional roles. But after settling down in the suburbs with their husbands, the "can do" attitudes of these newly enlightened, overbearing women inevitable sparked an identity crisis within the American male.
Graebner divides these various themes into seven chapters, citing a wide variety of cultural sources. Film noir cinema, Time magazine essays, comic strips, and the Kinsey report are some of the most prominent. Few history books and monographs dealing with the forties could be located by the author, so Graebner admittedly places great reliance on books with a larger focus. These mainly deal with subjects of thought and culture: cinema, fiction. poetry, drama, architecture, music, art, and popular comic strips/books.
The book is effective in illustrating the dichotomy of the American spirit, as well as some unifying themes like gender roles and consumerism. Moreover, Graebner perceptively identifies earlier trends that influenced the forties, and explains how developments originating in the forties culminated in movements of the 1950s and 1960s. His examination of the anxieties, historical lessons, religion, and popular culture forms a strong underpinning for his thesis that the entire decade was dominated by mass anxiety and doubt.

Prepared by the Klingon Language Institute, The Klingon Hamlet presents full English and Klingon versions of Shakespeare's play side by side. Only experienced Klingon speakers will be able to fully appreciate the nuances of the Klingon-language version, but for anyone who has dabbled in the language, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire large chunks of authentic text to practice on. Most of the vocabulary used can be found in either The Klingon Dictionary or Klingon for the Galactic Traveler.
For non-Klingon speakers, there is Shakespeare's original text, an English-language introduction, and detailed endnotes, very wittily presented. These put forward the case that Shakespeare himself was a Klingon, and underline the essentially Klingon nature of this famous play, with its themes of honor and revenge. In creating the tragic figure of Hamlet, with his very un-Klingon propensity for brooding and procrastination, Shakespeare is believed to have been commenting on a culture becoming alienated from its traditional warlike virtues, and we are told that most Klingons find it a deeply disturbing play.
All in all, this is a very clever, well-presented interpretation of one of the world's most famous plays. The Klingon translation, in all the glory of its iambic pentameter, has been lovingly constructed, and is well worth the effort of reading at least a few favorite passages aloud. --Elizabeth Sourbut, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
For too long, readers throughout the Federation have been exposed to The Tragedy of Khamlet, Son of the Emperor of Qo'nos, that classic work of Klingon literature, only through inadequate and misleading English translations. Now at last, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Klingon Language Institute, this powerful drama by the legendary Klingon playwright, Wil'yam Shex'pir, can be appreciated in the elegance and glory of its original tongue.
This invaluable volume contains the complete text of the play, along with an
English translation for easy consultation and comparison. In addition, an incisive introduction explains the play's crucial importance in Klingon culture, while copious notes illustrate how the debased English version diverges from the original, often distorting and even reversing the actual meaning of the verses.
Khamlet, the Restored Klingon Version, is a work that belongs in the library of every human who hopes truly to understand what it means to be Klingon.
Customer Reviews:
Imperdible en la biblioteca Star Trek.......2007-01-03
Un libro tan clásico como este imposible. Además en Klingonés. ¿Aun no lo tienes?
This doesn't help........2006-05-17
It's a shame such creativity and energy isn't applied to solving actual problems the world faces.
Excellent Read.......2004-10-03
For all those wondering whether this is worth the read, let me say the Kang was right when he said you can't appreciate hamlet unless you've read it in Klingon. Ejoy!
Didn't like it........2004-07-29
I'd like to think that I am a Star Trek and Klingon fan, but this work was horrible. I don't believe the author knows anything about Klingons and it seems that his writing smacks of "Look how important *I* am". I'd rather read real Shakespeare if this is the only thing available. Better luck next time.
Perfect in its own way, and thought-provoking.......2003-10-04
What a mad, hilarious enterprise this is. If anyone thinks this is merely a discharge of nerdishness, let them try and translate a whole Shakespeare play in ANY language - let alone one in which expressions and ways of thought have to be invented along with metre and rhyme. And as a matter of fact, this is not merely a well-made piece of whimsy: the emphasis of its "critical" parts on the warrior identity of "Khamlet" and the meaning of his sense of disgrace provide a useful, thought-provoking contrast to much of the "terran" critical tradition, which tends to neglect that Hamlet is a prince, a swordsman, a potential military leader, and that the warrior Fortinbras thought that "He was likely, had he been put on/ To have proved most royal".

Customer Reviews:
A very good book on Paint Shop Pro 8.......2006-03-16
This book was everything I hoped it was. It explained a lot of things about PSP that I didn't know. I mean that it help in all of the different versions of PSP. I was very pleased and I am still learning from it.
Not Everything, Mostly Photo Manipulation How To.......2005-12-29
The title of my review says it all. Although the title of the book is "How To Do Everything ..." it mostly shows you how to manipulate your photo images. Has some basic info on the controls but very little about how to use Paint Shop Pro 8 in creating or modifying graphic images. Get Paint Shop Pro 8 For Dummies if you want more useful info for the same size book/price.
The best for PSP 8 and digital photography.......2004-06-16
Although this book needs another title (it certainly does not cover 'everything' in PSP 8 especially things like brushes, filters, it is still an excellent reference for using PSP 8 with your digital photography images and teaching some digital photography techniques.
I bought:
Paint Shop Pro 8: The Guide to Creating Professional Images by Robin Nichols
How To Do Everything with Paint Shop Pro 8 by Dave Huss
Paint Shop Pro 8 Zero to Hero by Sally Beachman and Ron Lacey
Paint Shop Pro 8 Power by Lori Davis.
Dave's book is by far the best for digital photography and Paint Shop Pro 8, he knows his photography unlike the others who really seem to struggle to explain anything but the most basic, surface information. Zero to Hero by Beacham and Lacey is a complete was of money in my experience unless you are a person who doesn't have a clue when you are being fed garbage information by macjob type people who have no formal training in graphics design (it shows in their book). Robin Nichols book is much better than Dave's for covering brushes, filters, and giving examples of real creative design. Robin seems to have the best knowledge of graphic design principles and concepts and has the creative touch to bring it all together for the reader nicely. Lori Davis' book is much like Beacham and Lacey's when it comes to lacking any hint of unique, creativity, but at least Lori knows Paint Shop Pro well, unlike Beacham and Lacey who seem to be very limited in the topics they can discuss in detail. Lori's book is a good extension of the Paint Shop Pro 8 manual where she covers what has been done but uses more examples.
Out of these books if you have the cash purchase Dave's book for his digital photography and photo editing tips and tricks and advice. Buy Robin's book for creative ideas in designing from scratch graphics and learning creative ways to use the brushes and filters. Buy Lori's book to get if you want a more technical look at aspects of Paint Shop Pro 8's general features, but don't need creative insights. With these 3 books you should have more than you will ever need, but if you can only afford two than get Dave's and Robin's.
How To Do Everything with Paint Shop Pro 8.......2003-12-10
Yes, the title is very misleading! But that is not so much the fault of the author. McGraw Hill/Osborne has a whole series of "How to do Everything with" books. At first glance I thought this might be a great book for photographers ... because it didn't talk about all the "paint" features, the silly picture tubes etc. This is a fine book for beginners but I had hoped for more in a number of areas. His knowledge of cropping leaves a bit to be desired and most of the example photos are very amateurish. As I got further into the book I found that the author did not mention "unsharp mask" when discussing sharpening and the word "optimize" never found its way into the text!!! So I have to question the validity of this author! How can he work with photographs and not use the unsharp mask and optimize his work when it is saved? I had also hoped for more information about Scripting. There's nothing here about customizing recorded scripts. Since Scripting is one of the best new features about v.8 he should have gone into detail!
To my knowledge there is NOT an excellent, or really good book on the market about using PSP with photographs!
Thank God for this Book.......2003-09-26
This book, with its step-by-step procedures, saved me loads of time and money. As an artist trying to ramp up very quickly on a new freelance job, this book showed me EVERYTHING I needed at first glance.
I created mouse-over buttons in seconds following the instructions in this book. I like the way the instructions are laid out: Pixel-, resolution-, and palette-settings are all defined for you! The "Create Images for the Web" chapter is a life-saver for anyone designing for the Web. With this book, I was able--in a very short time--to focus on my art, not the tool!!
