                  Book Description

Bossa nova is one of the most popular musical genres in the world. Songs such as “The Girl from Ipanema” (the fifth most frequently played song in the world), “The Waters of March,” and “Desafinado” are known around the world. Bossa Nova—a number-one bestseller when originally published in Brazil as Chega de saudade—is a definitive history of this seductive music. Based on extensive interviews with Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, and all the major musicians and their friends, Bossa Nova explains how a handful of Rio de Janeiro teenagers changed the face of popular culture around the world. Now, in this outstanding translation, the full flavor of Ruy Castro’s wisecracking, chatty Portuguese comes through in a feast of detail. Along the way he introduces a cast of unforgettable characters who turned Gilberto’s singular vision into the sound of a generation.

I first read Ruy Castro's 'Bossa Nova' and wanted more! Then I found this book, and loved it. I also went on to read Ruy Castro's next book (translated into English) Garrincha which is about a Futebol star. I am not into soccer but I loved the book.
In short, I've been really enjoying reading the Ruy Castro books that have been translated into english. Maybe I'll learn Portuguese and read the rest. I recommend this book.

                  2 out of 5 stars Shallow.......2005-01-05

If you look for a comprehensive account of almost all the musicians involved in Bossa Nova including what they earned for what, if you want to know which of Miucha's recipes Joao was crazy about (couscous with fish) or who ironed Joao's pants minutes before he went onstage at the famous bossa nova concert in Carnegie Hall, N.Y. 1962 (Brazilian Vice Consul Dona Dora Vasconcellos - admittedly an absolutely hilarious story), if you can be amused by Brazilian musicians forever coming late to appointments, or drinking themselves into hospital frequently (Vinicius, Baden Powell, Maysa ...) - this is your book. If you care to know who dated who among all those wonderful Brazilian musicians of the 60s or who was the Girl from Ipanema (Heloisa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto, age 18 in 1962, for further details see Brazilian Playboy May 1987 edition - when she was 43 though) - this book is a must for you.
If you share Ruy Castro's contempt for politically engaged music (however naïve) in times of military dictatorship or if you believe that Tropicalismo, which was started by Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Caetano Veloso among others after the air went out of Bossa Nova in 1967, was "a ye ye ye renovation movement" - you'll absolutely love it.

But if you care for the music - if you want to know how musicians worked and felt, what ideals they looked up to and which traditions they respected - forget it and go look for something else.
Faute de mieux (because it deals mainly with the post Bossa Nova period) you might look into Caetano Veloso's own book "Tropical Truth": much more intelligent, much more respectful (especially towards people like Roberto Carlos or Nara Leao), insightful and although pretty intellectual much more heartfelt and humane than Ruy Castro's comprehensive compendium of Bossa Nova gossip.

(Out of disappointment I might make it look worse than it really is: there are amusing and interesting parts. At least you get to learn some about all those fantastic poets and singers and composers, especially Joao Gilberto. But on the whole a huge let down.)

4 out of 5 stars Important facts and entertaining gossip :).......2004-06-01

This book intends to show us how the Bossa Nova started, and succeeds marvelously in doing exactly that. The author, Ruy Castro, introduces us not only to the lives of the musicians who influenced the creators of Bossa Nova, but also to those who "made" the Bossa Nova. For example, we get to know more about Joao Gilberto, and learn about the events that lead to the revolution he provoked in Brazilian music with his 1958 song, "Chega de saudade". We are also introduced to Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Sylvia Telles, Ronaldo Boscoli, Carlinhos Lyra, Nara Leao and Roberto Menescal, among others...

Ruy Castro tells us Bossa Nova's story as if it were a tale: we get to know important facts about that movement, but also entertaining gossip regarding the people who were part of it. Reading this book is quite easy, and you will find that the author makes you smile from time to time, with acerbic commentaries that are often close to the truth.

I love this book because I think that it adds a "human dimension" to Bossa Nova. I like to enjoy the songs, but also to know about the lives of those who wrote them, and what inspired the creators regarding each particular song... Have you ever asked yourself if "The girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") was inspired on a real girl?. Ruy Castro gives you the answer to that question, and to many more....

On the whole, I highly recommend this book. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because the English translation has some small flaws when compared to "Chega de Saudade", the original version in Portuguese. However, that is only a minor shortcoming when you take into account that this translation allows many people who don't speak Portuguese to know more about Bossa Nova.

A final word of advice?. If you can, listen to the songs this book speaks about while you read it. Remember to listen to the different versions of those songs: not only in English, but also the original versions in Portuguese. The reason for that suggestion is that in many cases I have listened to both versions and they are remarkably different... Don't worry, even if you don't understand the meaning of the words in Portuguese, you will delight in the rhythm, the sound of the words, and the differences you will find. The result?: you will enjoy this book even more.

                  4 out of 5 stars Really wonderful.......2002-10-12

The previous reviewers are being too picky. I'm sure there are mistakes in the translation but this book captures Ruy Castro's writing voice amazingly well. It's really a sweet book, a sweet story and of course sweet music. I know next to nothing about pre-Bossa Brazilian music and I wasn't confused. I did keep a pad by the book to write down names of singers and songs I need to search for. It's fascinating how all these different stories led to Bossa Nova. It's a lot more diverse than you'd think. I only wish there was a companion CD to hear all this great music, especially the more obscure early stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of insights into how human psychology works.......2004-06-08

In school, at recreation, or on the job, have you ever had someone categorize you without thinking, or sum up your life or personality in few derogatory words and attempt to make the label stick? Bigger Than The Box: The Effects Of Labeling is especially intended for teachers and parents yet has wisdom for anyone working with young people or who personally has to deal with labeling behavior in education, the workplace, or personal life. Examining how the phenomenon of slapping labels on people has lasting impact for good or ill on psychology and behavior, and addressing means to teach children not to abuse labeling or let it rule them, Bigger Than The Box offers a wealth of insights into how human psychology works and the steps one can take to regain control over one's life and show one's children how to do the same. Highly recommended.

                  Book Description

Starship Spotter was created more than two centuries ago to serve as a reference guide to assorted space-going vessels. Captains of the spaceships of the United Earth Space Probe Agency used this simple paper tool to enable a ship's crew to quickly distinguish friend from foe in the unexplored reaches of the cosmos. When the services were merged to form Starfleet, this paper book disappeared from use. Only recently rediscovered, the newest editions of this book have been the sole purview of Starfleet Academy.

Each year, a new class of Starfleet cadets carefully reviews and revises the contents. The ships displayed in Starship Spotter have been chosen as a tribute to the crews who have served on them and the valor shown, regardless of the ship's affiliation. Although only thirty ships could be included, the cadets feel these ships reflect the noble history of space travel.

We proudly present to you the Class of 2383 edition of Starship Spotter.

Each ship listed has basic info, specifications, and a wire-frame view on the first two pages. That is followed by a 2 page full cgi rendering in the black of space.

The renderings are dimly lit and don't show the ships well, unless you only wanted to see engines glow.

This was a ill-concieved item and the publishing company was looking for a quick buck. This book debuts a month after Enterprise debuts on television. What were they thinking? Just from the table of contents, it isn't worth the cost or the effort to produce this.

Where's the Breen, The Gorn, The Tholians. Bajoran ships are missing, Ferengi ships are missing. Both Enterprise B and Enterprise C are missing, what a glaring error on the part of the writers and the publisher. Even among those that are mentioned, this book just barely touches on what can be found in the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

This book has nothing to offer the fans or the occasional watcher. It toutes itself as a reference for "Academy Students" of the class of 2383. It's a good thing this is science fiction, because it would leave them with nothing useful to have embarking on their careers.

This really shouldn't have a rating of any stars, but...

Don't go near this book unless you like wasting money.

                  3 out of 5 stars Interesting Book.......2006-11-10

This book has many important info about some interesting ships seen on the TV series. The graphics are good but are in double page, so sometimes you don't a good overall vision because the division of the pages.

2 out of 5 stars Potential sadly unrealized........2005-09-13

The previous reviews are quite accurate, and should be read before deciding to purchase. For my part, I was overall content with the book, since I was more interested in the ship statistics and some of the "historical" descriptions than the artwork, so the admittedly disappointing nature of the ship renderings did not put me off as badly. However, the omission of key ships (see below) was a major disappointment, particularly galling was the insistence on describing things I could care less about, such as the Midas Array, "worker bees", etc. If one is going to limit oneself to 128 pages and 30 ships, then perhaps a little more common sense ought to have been devoted to selecting which "ships" to describe!

Another problem I had with some of the more exotic alien ships was a lack of information on their statistics, especially the Species 8472 bioship. While one cannot reveal all secrets, having everything listed as "unknown" is more than a little unsatisfying. At the least simply state observed qualities (i.e. maximum warp (observed) 9.46) or something similar.

I also agree that the line drawings of the ships were not as useful as they could have been. I would suggest either replacing or perhaps augmenting them with more standard 3 view drawings (front, profile, and top) as are given in the Star Fleet Technical Manual, for example.

It is my sincerest hope that a revised and heavily expanded 2nd edition will be released. Should the author(s) read this, here are some glaring omissions in need of being added:
                  - Excelsior class
                  - Ambassador class
                  - Constellation class
                  - Oberth class
                  - Daedalus class
                  - Borg cube
                  - Borg sphere
                  - Borg tactical cube
                  - Enterprise NX-01
                  - Klingon Negh'Var battleship
                  - K'Vort class cruiser

Very nice and much appreciated additions would be:
                  - Vulcan ships from Enterprise
                  - Klingon ships from Enterprise (a number of new designs are in evidence)
                  - The Romulan ship from Enterprise (the minefield episode)
                  - Other Earth ships from Enterprise (particularly the 2nd season finale)
                  - "Kobyashi Maru" Neutronic Fuel carrier
                  - Freighter destroyed in STIII by Bird of Prey
                  - Tholian ships
                  - Kazon ship

In spite of the unflattering reviews, this is a neat little book. For the price (on Amazon, that is), it is not a terribly bad buy. Wouldn't pay any more for it, though! However, there is much room for improvement, and I fervently hope the authors will take it upon themselves to release a vastly enhanced manual in the near future.

1 out of 5 stars Already been done.......2003-12-15

There's plenty of Star Trek websites that feature schematics of starships featured in this book. Most of them provide more information than published. A Google search will turn up these sites and you'll enjoy the lot of them.

                  Book Description

ColdFusion is an extremely powerful web-development tool. Despite its short initial learning curve, attributed to its accessible HTML-like, tag-based syntax, it provides sophisticated content-management solutions for large-scale enterprises. This has never been truer than it is now, since the release of ColdFusion MX. To take advantage of this power, you must step outside the box to learn skills as diverse as application design and Web Services development--topics addressed only briefly, if at all, in standard ColdFusion tutorials and reference books.

ColdFusion MX Developer's Handbook teaches you what you need to broaden your ColdFusion skills and become a fully capable enterprise developer. Inside, 13 ColdFusion experts provide highly detailed, advanced instruction that will save you countless headaches and let you squeeze every last drop of functionality from the newest release. You'll master database integration techniques involving advanced SQL queries, stored procedures, and database upsizing. You'll take advantage of MX's improved integration with other technologies, incorporating Flash using Flash Remoting, and capitalizing on full XML support to create Web Services. In your custom coding, you'll build and deploy Java and C++ extensions and wirelessly extend ColdFusion's reach with components that talk to WAP and WML clients.

All this comes wrapped in practical, hard-to-find advice for managing your content and applications and optimizing performance. Large applications with heavy traffic need speed and efficiency, and you get that with performance turning, load balancing, and caching. If you're working in a clustered environment, you need to understand state management. No matter what your situation, you'll benefit from in-depth coverage of application security, debugging, and coding methodology using Fusebox.

Every chapter is packed with the technical knowledge to give you what you need to create serious solutions. You might find that one particular chapter alone is worth the cost of the book because of the time and frustration it will save you. Most readers, however, will use various parts of this book at different times, depending on the constantly changing challenges faced by enterprise programmers. The mission of this book is to provide the extra skills you need to be a successful ColdFusion developer in today's demanding and expanding environment.

4 out of 5 stars Some excellent ideas and techniques.......2007-07-13

Well let me say first why I didn't give this book 5 stars: Too little written on CF compnents and too much on WDDX. I realise that the book was written several years ago, but it definitely needs a revision.

Now, let me tell you why I didn't give it 3 stars: As a ColdFusion programmer for a number of years, there's very little written in book form for advanced CF programmers. So I do recommend this book if you are, like me, a programmer that came from another field into programming through ColdFusion and want something that gets into a little more than just connecting to a database and spitting out some data. However, if you have a programming background in other languages you may find this book to be a little boring.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-06-23

Good Reading. From a design point of view, one of the best. Great for any seasoned ColdFusion Developer who wants to implement best practices in their applications.I highly reccommend this book for ColdFusion Developers with approx. 1-2 years of experience.

5 out of 5 stars Ready to Raise Your Skill Level?.......2004-04-01

Having been a full time ColdFusion Developer for nearly five years, I've had my fill of books that only offer the most shallow introductions to topics covered. This book is not one of those books - it's outstanding! There are thirteen coauthors and their combined efforts have produced an excellent resource any experienced developer should appreciate. Ramond Camden wrote the book's introduction, and, at its conclusion he wrote: "The mission of this book is to take you "outside the box" and provide the extra skills you need to be a successful ColdFusion developer in today's demanding environment." In my opinion, they fulfilled their mission!

There were numerous times over the two months I've had this book on hand that I found it very helpful. Some of the topics I particularly enjoyed so far address WDDX and XML, performance tuning, SQL and stored procedures and web services. The tips, processes and many detailed and truly useful examples have been a significant factor in elevating my skill level from the plateau it seemed I had been on.

Did I mention that the examples are actually useful? The problem I find with typical examples found in most books and online documentation is that they are so seldom of much use at all. I like examples that have some "meat on their bones," that relate to common tasks done in the real world, with comments about relevant issues born of experience.

The combined experience of the authors and the thoughtful presentation of the material is appreciated by this developer - thanks for an exceptional book, Sybex.

                  4 out of 5 stars Playing catch-up on Cold Fusion's new features.......2003-07-12

Five years ago I was called upon to learn Cold Fusion over a weekend before starting a new assignment. I picked up Ben Forta's original Cold Fusion book and read three or four chapters on the way home on the train, picking up the bulk of what I needed to know to do my work in a few short hours. I've done a lot of work with Cold Fusion since then, and used that book to pick up many of the finer points of the craft, including the CFPOP and CFMAIL tags which I used to build a web-based e-mail service.

The web has changed a lot since 1998, and so has Cold Fusion. That book served me well, but with all the technological advances since its publication, I needed a new book that offered coverage of all the new features in Cold Fusion, from support for Flash and XML to invocation of web services and next-generation Cold Fusion components.

I've definitely found the right book to help me "catch-up" on Cold Fusion, but the book would still be great for neophytes seeking to learn Cold Fusion from the ground up, as well as experienced Cold Fusion developers who need a reference to the product's many new features.
