        Book Description

Co-management-the sharing of responsibilities between governmental institutions and groups of resource users-is rapidly gaining popularity in Asia. In many countries environmental management is reformulated from exclusive state control to various kinds of joint management in which local communities, indigenous peoples, and nongovernmental organizations share authority and benefits with governmental institutions. Combining case studies of experiments with co-management in a number of different countries with more reflective contributions, this in-depth analysis addresses the underlying assumptions and problems in the practical implementation of co-management practices.

From the supplier: Considering macroeconomic developments and economic and labour market restructuring after several years of transition, the author suggests that supply shocks, not deflationary policies of restructuring explain output collapse. Unemployment rose sharply in many countries, but private firms draw workers directly from the state sector while long-term unemployment grows. The extent of restructuring should thus be measured not by unemployment levels but by changes in the sectoral composition of output. After discussing wage-setting options he recommends gradual rationalization of overstaffed state firms, encouragement of private-sector recruitment and business start-ups, and policies for mobility to sustain an eventual recovery in employment. Product Description

Conventional wisdom holds that aging populations are unfavorable for economic growth because of their potential impacts on labor supply, productivity, and savings. When this is coupled with the increased spending pressures because of pension requirements and health care, aging societies are likely to face serious fiscal problems. This report addresses these concerns in the unique context of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union where many countries are aging rapidly without the economic resources and institutional capacity of other aging societies in Western Europe and Japan.

                  Book Description

The economic and structural changes in the transition countries since the break up of the Soviet Union have been unique and profound. This book explores how the labor markets of the Central and Eastern European transition countries, the Baltic States, and the Russian Federation have developed in response to this and to the new challenge of accession to the European Union.

Through cross-country analysis, the volume examines the sectoral structure of employment as well as the changes in its major characteristics, such as employment status, type of labour contract, formal/informal employment and others. The strictness of employment protection legislation is also explored, and this study evaluates its effect on the level and structure of employment and unemployment both for selected transition countries and Western industrialized countries. In addition, the developments in labour market institutions, labour market policies, collective bargaining and labour taxation in ten transition countries are compared with selected OECD countries presending a clear, overall policy picture.

The book offers convincing policy recommendations for the better management of labour market changes from an economic and social point of view, while keeping in mind the overarching long-term goal of achieving full, productive and fully chosen employment at the global, regional, national and local levels.

                      Book Description

Over the past five to ten years Central and East European (CEE) countries have undergone a radical transformation of their economies from state socialism to various forms of market capitalism. During this time employment ratios plummeted from dubious full employment' to levels equal or lower than in countries of comparable economic development. This transformation of labor markets has left in its wake a high and persistent rate of unemployment, implying that individuals still seek work despite a dramatic deterioration of their employment chances. At the same time, low participation is putting an unbearable social security burden on the active population as systemic dependency ratios have risen and are currently significantly above those of the OECD countries. Entry into Europe, with the associated adoption of standards for social security provisions, will further increase the fiscal burden on the active population unless the ratio of employment to population, and the tax base for social policies, is increased. This book looks at the nature of unemployment in the CEE countries. It then analyses the determinants of labor supply and demand to predict where market equilibrium should be in these economies. The authors conclude by looking at the role of policy, arriving at a set of proposals for enhancing labor supply in the region. These include: better integration between unemployment benefits and social assistance; the maintenance and development of active labor market programs, increased spending on general secondary education; and investment into the infrastructure of transportation. This comprehensive account of labor market issues facing the CEE countries will be of interest to everyone concerned with the economics of transition and economic policies in the region.

                          Book Description

This books deals with labour reallocation in the midst of structural change, drawing on the experience of economic transition in formerly planned economies. It details those features of social welfare systems best suited to fostering structural change while at the same time reducing social costs. The interaction between labour and social policies is studies, showing the crucial role that non-employment benefits play in both the scope and the speed of transition. By including the influence of education systems, institution-building, and policy-enforcement mechanisms, this book goes beyond previous studies to provide a detailed analysis of the many contributing factors to the success or failure of the transition process.

5 out of 5 stars Too good to slow down for.......2006-08-08

Reading Semi True is almost as good as taking your own relaxed, spontaneous road trip --better, really, because Ringsak stops at more unlikely places, discovers more remarkable people and elicits their stories better than anyone. I raced through the book too fast; I was enjoying it too much to slow down and when I finished I wanted nothing more than to randomly select a road to anywhere and take it.

                            5 out of 5 stars A lively first-person account of close encounters.......2004-11-05

Twelve years of hauling stage equipment for public radio's Prairie Home Companion show led hauler/author Ross Ringsak to become privy to some amazing stories gleaned from truck stops, blues bars and more. Fans of Prairie Home Companion will be the likely audience for his social survey of factual tales encountered during the course of truck driving. Semi True: Seasons On The Road With A Prairie Home Companion's Resident Writer And Truck Driver a lively first-person account of close encounters of the folk kind.

You could take a video tour or even a driving tour of this country and miss most of what the author sees, hears and tastes. Avoiding the common roads, eateries, entertainment and attitudes most of us travelers fall prey to out of habit and convenience, he seeks out the unique. Rather than avoiding conversation with strangers he engages them until they come forward with stories and secrets. And there are some great stories here.
I have been awed and impressed in my travels to places that have left an indellible impression, but I have missed the details, the subtle shifts in the landscape and the weather and the people, that this author perceives and writes about so naturally.
This is a truck driver with suprising sensitivity to his surroundings. These stories will make you wish you could ride shotgun and get the personal tour. If this book doesn't make you yearn to travel to places you've never experienced, or even to familiar places with new eyes, nothing will.
In the end though, the ultimate feeling he leaves with the reader is the warmth at the end of the journey... arriving home, even if means being greeted by a bitter Minnesota blizzard.
If you are a fan of books by authors like Studs Terkel, who make the common man interesting and even heroic, you will like this book.

                            Book Description

Music in Ireland is one of several case-study volumes that can be used along with Thinking Musically, the core book in the Global Music Series. Thinking Musically incorporates music from many diverse cultures and establishes the framework for exploring the practice of music around the world. It sets the stage for an array of case-study volumes, each of which focuses on a single area of the world. Each case study uses the contemporary musical situation as a point of departure, covering historical information and traditions as they relate to the present. Visit www.oup.com/us/globalmusic for a list of case studies in the Global Music Series. The website also includes instructional materials to accompany each study. Music in Ireland provides an engaging and focused introduction to Irish traditional music--types of singing, instrumental music, and dance that reflect the social values and political messages central to Irish identity. This music thrives today not only in Ireland but also in areas throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Vividly evoking Irish sounds, instruments, and dance steps, Music in Ireland provides a springboard for the discussion of cultural and historical issues of identity, community, nationalism, emigration, transmission, and gender. Using the informal instrumental and singing session as a focal point, Dorothea E. Hast and Stanley Scott take readers into contemporary performance environments and explore many facets of the tradition, from the "craic" (good-natured fun) to performance style, repertoire, and instrumentation. Incorporating first-person accounts of performances and interviews with performers and folklorists, the authors emphasize the significant roles that people play in music-making and illuminate national and international musical trends. They also address commercialism, globalization, and cross-cultural collaboration, issues that have become increasingly important as more Irish artists enter the global marketplace through recordings, tours, and large-scale productions like Riverdance. Packaged with a 70-minute CD containing examples of the music discussed in the book, Music in Ireland features guided listening and hands-on activities that allow readers to gain experience in Irish culture by becoming active participants in the music.

This outstanding book fills a long-standing lacuna. It will immediately become the standard introductory text for Irish music, and it should remain so for the forseeable future--it's hard to imagine what could surpass it. The material is elegantly organized and very well presented. I particularly like the way that the reader is welcomed into real traditional music events; in these sections the material truly comes alive. The recorded examples are lovely.

In a new volume in Oxford's Global Music Series, the subtitle `Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture' emphasises the musical force gained by Irish music from its being rooted in the local. Dorothea Hast and Stanley Scott, practitioners and scholars both, visit a seisiun at Gleesons pub in Clare near the Miltown Malbay centre of melodic pilgrimage, interview traditional singers Len Graham from Glenarm and his wife, Padraigin Ni Uallachain, from Louth, and analyze a performance held at Trinity Inn near the college in Dublin under the auspices of the Goilin Singer's Club. By concentrating on these three manifestations of the current Irish scene, emphasising in turn the instrumental, the sean-nos and song tradition, and the song as both perpetuating the tradition and welcoming the innovative, Hast and Scott provide an overview easily enjoyed in a couple of sittings along with the accompanying 28-track CD, keyed to their informative text.

Although designed for the classroom, this volume can inform anyone about the background, current context, and permutations of Irish music. I was impressed by the ease in which musicologists Hast and Scott integrate technical terms into their text designed for the rank novices like me to musical terminology. The activities allow you to learn from the CD track at specified moments in your reading, and particularly impressive I found one example. Piper Jerry O'Sullivan offers multiple versions of "Garrett Barry's Jig." The first is a stripped-down version transcribed for the beginning student. The notes simplify the melody. The second version adds ornaments. The third time through, with the use of the regulators of the instrument, adds even more intricacies. As a careful listener to the pipes, the combination of the three scores and the three takes added immeasurably to my comprehension of what, if I had been presented only with the audio tracks, would have sounded like lots of flash added to a straightforward tune.

The connection of the pub session and the repertoire with the local emerges strongly in these pages. Hast and Scott could have wandered all 32 counties and given a thumbnail rundown of famous players or notable tunes in these 150 pages. Instead, they study the etiquette, the passing on of tunes, the respect paid the elders, and the democracy of the audience and players, as all who play and sing thus gain appreciation in turn. The incident down the road or up the lane, as so many titles show, the inspiration of a particular player, and the commemoration of battles and courtships long faded remain memorialised but never mummified. The context emerges in the playing and the singing, ever-shifting but still reified. Each playing and recital changes the structure but leaves the scaffolding in place for the next builder. Eschewing the gazateer approach, the authors' choice to zero in on three locales heightens their primacy of the community within what continues to be passed on within the Irish traditional repertoire, and what is added.

After an injury of a famous musician, the authors note that within a week or so not one but two ballads had been composed about his mishap while playing at doubles. E-mail and phone only accelerate the transmission of the oral tradition, it seems. Similarly, the ability to tape performances, to sell recordings, and share by technological advances the wealth of musical variation only increases the lustre of the treasure to which musicians and singers contribute. `In each postindependence generation of Irish musicians, individuals have had to choose between the urban, upbeat high-volume allure of swing, rock and roll country and western, heavy metal, or rap and the more rural, frequently slower-paced, quieter, intimate appeal of Irish music'. (96) Now, on the other hand, musicians and singers can mix forms. While in my opinion the hybrids can be dreadful, they do expose younger listeners to the older forms.

The gamut of players and singers treated shows this heterogeneity. While any listener or player may lament who or what's been left out, you must admit that the range can certainly educate the beginner or the advanced fan of Irish music of the diversity we are lucky to hear and share now. For example: Carolan harp tunes, West Clare and Sligo fiddle, ceili bands from the 1940s, vocals from John McCormack, Joe Heaney, Andy Irvine, and Gleesons pub singers, sean-nos from Ni Uallachain and Scots-Irish song from Graham, and members of Lunasa live and in session demonstrating some of the finer points of the text, to which Hast and Scott also enrich their own musical collaborations. The text covers the history of Irish music effectively, although the influential and detrimental Dance Halls Act of 1935 in the south needed more explanation, as it weakened the ability of individuals to hold their own musical gatherings and seems to have been instigated by the Church and the Dublin government to weaken rural choices for venues. I wondered if this was part of the anti-jazz campaign undertaken by republicans in the middle of that decade, but the text offers no context. Dance tune traditions and their instruments in turn receive a few paragraphs; from this I learned of the bodhran's very recent rise in popularity and that of the uilleann pipes, both having entered the limelight only during the 60s and 70s. The decline of the harp and the ascent of the fiddle still puzzled me due to their too brief treatment here. Why the concertina became the "woman's instrument" can be traced, intriguingly, to not only its relative affordability early last century but its sale at hardware stores.

Throughout this survey, Ciaran Carson, Belfast poet-musician, from his estimable Last Night's Fun (1996), the ultimate print on Irish sound, continues to be cited. Near the end of Hast and Scott quote Carson--
'Each time the song is sung, our notions of it change, and we are changed by it. The words are old. They have been worn into shape by many ears and mouths and have been contemplated often. But every time is new because the time is new, and there is no time like now.' (116; in Hast and Scott, 135). As with the language, so the music and the native culture. All are enriched by the blow-ins and the strangers, but never is the root torn away. The nutrients from fresh winds plant themselves in the soil and the stronger creation, the hybrid, can better withstand old winds and new blasts. Or so we hope.

5 out of 5 stars great overview/history of traditional Irish music.......2004-08-18

I've always enjoyed Irish music when I've had the opportunity, but I didn't have any formal knowledge about it. This book was very accessible and covered a lot of bases -- the music itself, the key instruments (the harp gets its due along with the more commonly seen fiddle and others), the relationship between Irish music and Irish history and culture, and an intro to various types of traditional Irish music. And a real sense of the Irish people and personality comes through. (Conversations with many of Ireland's leading performers are reported in the book). The accompanying CD is great: again part education, part performance. Some recently performed pieces and some fascinating recordings from decades past. Recommended.

Music in Bulgaria presents a focused introduction to the rich and varied tradition of Bulgarian music. Taking readers on a tour of the country's musical landscape, it explores ways in which Bulgaria's rural traditions affect the expression and interpretation of its music and examines how Bulgaria's history has influenced its music over many decades. The book also shows how musical traditions have been preserved and have flourished despite the social changes brought about by the post-WWII era of industrialization, modernization, and urbanization. Timothy Rice demonstrates how Bulgarian music--in addition to being an art and an entertainment--is deeply embedded in the cultural, social, economic, and political life of the country. He analyzes how this music has spread to other cultures and how it has made its mark on new forms of popular music. Brief lessons on how ethnomusicologists conduct their research are also included. Written in a lively style accessible to both students and general readers, Music in Bulgaria features vivid eyewitness accounts of performances, interviews with performers, and glossaries of Bulgarian and musical terms. Incorporating numerous listening examples and other activities that help readers learn to listen, sing, and dance to Bulgarian music, this volume is packaged with a 70-minute CD containing examples of the music discussed.

4 out of 5 stars A short but fairly detailed introduction for non-ethnographers.......2006-02-10

Timothy Rice's MUSIC IN BULGARIA, part of Oxford University Press' "Global Music" series, is a concise introduction to the world of Bulgarian musical life from peasant traditions of centuries past to the pop-folk ("chalga") combination enjoyed by modern urban listeners. Unlike Rice's earlier work on the subject, MAY IT FILL YOUR SOUL: Experiencing Bulgarian Music, this volume assumes no prior study of enthography, but a knowledge of basic music theory is vital to making the most out of it.

Rice begins with the wedding music scene, the only survival of village communal music that exists in the lives of average urban Bulgarians. Describing a wedding in Sofia, he gives a portrait of Maria Stoyanova, a player of the gaida (bagpipe) brought with a well-known band for this lavish event. He next describes a Roma wedding in a village, the next place Stoyanova was invited to perform. After this fairly substantial dive into Bulgarian music, Rice gives a more systematic tour, such as the distinctive characteristics of each region's music. The reader will learn how to tell a Shop song from Pirin singing, recognise the several most common traditional instruments, and understand the origin of various kinds of music in the agricultural calendar.

The next portion of the book deals with the impact of politics on music, explaining how folk music was sanatized by the Communist government and then exported abroad as world music. "Les Mystere des Voix Bulgares" is the most well-known example. Many American musicians and listeners have been fascinated with the sound of this state-crafted music, whether because of its interesting rhythms, its otherworldly harmonies, or (for a subset of choral fans) because its female voices can be taken as a feminist statement. However, Rice is critical of those who take some aspects of Bulgaria's music without wanting to truly understand the social and cultural background of this rich heritage. Finally, Rice describes the most recent redaction of folk music in Bulgaria, the combination of folk inspiration with modern instruments that creates the genre known as popfolk or chalga.

Throughout the book Rice gives us some neat details about the music described, including instructions for the pravo horo danced at weddings, the lyrics of famous songs, and the scores of some tunes. I must say I was frustrated by the simple level of the writing. The "Global Music" series is meant for college readers but here it seems like a high-school audience is held in mind here. Nonetheless, this is a fun and informative book, sure to entertain and enlighten English-speaking fans of Bulgarian music.

Having learnt Aikido with the Tokyo riot police (ANGRY WHITE PYJAMAS), hunted for the world's longest snake in the jungles of the Far East (BIG SNAKE), Robert Twigger now turns his attention to other traditionally male pursuits and pastimes (some of which are fairly close to home, some of which are more extreme), and looks at the questions these raise about masculinity and the role of man in modern society. BEING A MAN isn't exactly a search for the lost attributes of primitive man - hunting, shooting, making fires, etc - but, hooked on a nostalgia for past writers such as Hemingway, the book features Twigger participating in, and writing on: the informal rules and thrill seeking of solo climbing, bullfighting in Spain, the 'illicit pleasure of buying my first gun', and the rules of survival with a tribe of Naga headhunters - the sort of activities and pursuits often scorned in the modern, interiorised office-based world. He also looks at why men feel the urge to escape in this way, and why, even in mundane everyday life, modern man is trapped in an endless loop of having to prove himself a man.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as previous.......2007-03-28

I loved Robert Twiggers' other books, but this one was a little weak. He seems to try to create a theory of manhood that is essentially that real men continue the life they learned on the playground. At one point, he discusses the interest he and his friends had as children in the derring-do of sailors, which I guess is his way of saying that little boys know more about being men than "safe" older men. However, he can't seem to distinguish this sense of risk from the adolescent tricksterism of skate-boards and dirt bikes. At other times, he seems to be describing some sort of Euro-dismal mid-life crisis, and his dislike of strutting men in the gym locker-room comes across as insecurity about his physique and "physique" rather than real criticism of modern views of men's bodies. My impression is that Twigger has a clear sense that the modern world is in total antipathy to masculinity (and it is) but that he has bought into too many of the theories and habits that underlie the emasculation to understand where the problem lies.

5 out of 5 stars 9th Edition is coming out 10/16/2007.......2007-05-16

I think I've owned every edition of this book since 1978. It's been a staple in my library for years. It's a fantastic resource for tons of burning TV trivia questions. Looking forward to the new 9th edition in October 2007. Should be interesting to see the updates. Excellent book idea.

                            The title says it all.
This really is a complete reference to every network and cable TV show since 1946 up to the last date for this publication, around 2003.

All the favoutites are here that one may care to mention - from West Wing to Dallas, Star Trek to Bonanza, and others you may have forgotten - Gemini Man, AfterMASH anyone?

The strengths of this book are in the synopses which are entertaining and informtive at the same time, so this book is more than just a dry listing of information. Also included is an extensive index on such items as longest season runs, Neilsen numbers etc.

                            Highly recommended.

It's been almost 4 years since the 8th Edition came out. A lot has happened on TV since 2003--Lost? Criminal Minds? Deadwood? House? Heroes?...the list goes on. I hope the 9th Edition is just as informative.

An excellent collection. It has settled many questions we have about what we were watching back then. With the weekly primetime schedules from the beginning to present, we obtain the program and then lookup all the information available on the subject and there is a lot to read about most of them!

It took me a while to see the value in "Making DVD's", and at first, I too only found a few pages of details that I thought were the real gold in the text. However, after reading through the different case studies, this is where the real benefit of this book comes in. These are real-world examples of people just like me that had a dream and a vision, and, by their example, I will be better equipped to make my project a success. Now, if you want to know about the latest gizmo to burn DVD's, or the latest format, or the number of henways per femptome, look somewhere else. Buy a magazine for that. If you want to learn how to capture an event correctly and learn from the examples of others that have gone before, this is for you. Consider this a crash coarse in film making from start to finish.

I do video production for a living. I am in the process of upgrading my business/equipment to include the ability to burn DVD's for my clients. This book didn't teach me the steps to accomplish this goal. This book was very general covering video production generalities, case studies, lots of technical jargon. I have a degree in television production, and the technical jargon in this book was WAY over my head. It did suggested some different DVD authoring programs for both a PC and MAC. Chapter 17 was the only chapter that really somewhat covered the differences in DVD-, DVD+, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-Rom, etc. But most of that chapter was hard to understand with technical terms that weren't really explained. I guess you could go thru the glossary and try to decifer the meanings, but I'd recommend looking for a different book. Out of the 304 pages, I found maybe 30 pages that were useful to me. I think I need one of those books for "dummies".

5 out of 5 stars Making DVDs : Creating and Authoring Your Own.......2004-02-11

Making DVDs is a well-rounded, informative handbook. It's easy to read and uses a "learn by doing" approach. By following the book's guidelines and suggestions, anyone can succeed in authoring a DVD project confidently. I think the book is a great value. I have two earlier CD-ROM/CD-R/DVD books by this author. He is well versed in the present state of the evolving DVD technology.
