Book Description
This substantial new book examines key economic, political and social aspects of Malaysia at the turn of the new century. It covers the years of rapid growth and dramatic structural change leading up to the 1997 financial crisis, and the subsequent adjustments which enabled the economy to resume its vigorous advance. The authors critically address affirmative action policies aiming to help Malays enter the modern economy and make income distribution more equitable while reducing poverty. They look at case studies of persisting poverty amidst economic progress, and also scrutinize the development of East Malaysia with its special problems away from the center of power in Kuala Lumpur.
The authors review the direction of politics after Prime Minister Mahathir, as well as exploring Malaysia's foreign, education, and labor policies. They canvass the idea of a `new Malay' better adapted to modern society, investigate the position of the Chinese, examine the struggle for women's rights within the religious framework of Islam, and discuss the contributions of Malaysian NGOs to ongoing changes. They finally draw together crucial issues facing Malaysia in the 21st century.
The contributors, who are leading scholars in their spheres, have produced a wide ranging and comprehensive guide to the economy and society of Malaysia. This book will be of great value and interest to students and scholars of Asian economics, development and social studies.
Book Description
The main object of this Ph.D. dissertation is the Slovenian transition to a market economy with a focus on the genesis of the Slovenian privatization model and the political and legislative process behind its formulation. Starting from a presentation of the international context and historical legacies, the study investigates the almost three-year-long Slovenian theoretical, parliamentary, economic, political and public debates (1990-1992) concerning the choice of model and institutional framework for large-scale privatization. In particular the legislative and discursive shaping of the text of the Law on Ownership Transformation of Enterprises is analyzed.
This thesis addresses the design of a property rights regime as a genuinely political meta-process of structuring that involves a redistribution of social assets, with important economic and social consequences for different groups in society, through which the conception of a just society is redefined. The study applies the heterodox institutional approach to analyze institutional choices in the "transition market." Such a perspective questions the simple causal explanations of the mechanisms of diffusion and the role of dominant ideas and ideologies in shaping institutions. Furthermore, the conventional understanding of institutions and history as structural constraints is challenged in order to open for the exploration of the conditions, mechanisms and processes of institutional change in terms of actor' contingencies for development of new institutions and path shifts through learning and problem solving processes, interaction and interpretation. The influence of the Slovenian experience with Yugoslav self-management on institutional change is explored.

Great Comedians Talk About Comedy
ASIN: 2884492445 |
Book Description
Detailing both their public and private lives-as well as their many and varied performances-Queens of Comedy examines the impact these women have had on the predominantly male-oriented world of comedy. Performers like Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers, and their more recent counterparts, comediennes Brett Butler and Roseanne, have helped to shift women's roles in comedy from object to subject. This book maps out this shift, providing an often brutally honest picture of women's lives in both the spotlight of comedy and this modern world.
Through candid personal interviews with Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and other visionary performers, Queens of Comedy explores how comediennes have redefined the roles of women in not only the entertainment business, but society as a whole.
Customer Reviews:
Great intro to comediennes.......2000-04-06
I used this as a textbook for a film class I taught last year and the class loved it. The book contains solid biographical information and it's really fun to read. Plus, author Horowitz offers some very perceptive insights into women's comedy. My only criticism is that footnotes would have been really helpful because the students wanted to follow up on some of the sources -- but overall I highly recommend it.
Book Description
The formation, music, and break-up of Big Star, a band that for many was the embodiment of the 1970s, is detailed in this definitive history. Even though Big Star was together for less than four years and had limited commercial success, the legacy of their three groundbreaking albums has influenced artists as diverse as R.E.M., the Bangles, Wilco, Jeff Buckley, and Garbage culminating in their song, "In the Street," as rerecorded by Cheap Trick, becoming the theme song for That '70s Show. The band's music and romance made Big Star a holy grail for the post-punk generation. This book recounts how band leader Alex Chilton put his heart and soul into the music and believed that he would become a big star—and how when he didn't, he engaged in a fascinating sort of musical self-sabotage. Also described is the tragic story of his coleader on their first record, Chris Bell, who after leaving the band recorded "I Am the Cosmos," a devastating adolescent love song, and then died in a car crash just months later. Featuring new interviews with the band, family members, friends, and the major players at Ardent Studios in Memphis, this book offers the complete story of this incredibly influential band.
Customer Reviews:
At long last, a well-researched & well-written Big Star bio!.......2007-06-11
I was thrilled to stumble across this book in an indie record store last month, and although I should have bought it on the spot, I decided to cash in an Amazon gift cert I had to get it. I was not disappointed. Over 14 years ago, I myself was in contact with Jody Stephens, Big Star's fantastic drummer and Ardent employee to this day, asking him if I could write a book on the band. At that time, he was friendly in saying, "No, thanks." He said he'd had others ask him, but he simply felt it wasn't the right time. (Bearing in mind this was about a year before the Big Star reunion show.) In any case, I was worried that if and when a Big Star bio did come out, it would fall short of my high expectations. Rob Jovanovic clearly took his time researching and writing this tribute, and it makes for a fascinating read for any fan of Big Star or just any music geek who cares about the history of rock and roll. The passages describing the writing and recording of #1 Record are especially revelatory, as are the chapters that deal with the ensuing industry-related setbacks and the late-70s years of personal and musical dysfunction & exploration.
Essential!
Well-researched but terribly written........2007-04-06
This book reads like a darn term paper, but if you're jonesing to learn more about Big Star, where else can you turn?
Awesome!.......2006-12-29
Rob Jovanovic did an awesome job here. The is a great & well researched read - He's Interviewed basically everyone worth interviewing (except for Alex Chilton as Chilton wasn't gonna talk - But hey, that's why we like Alex... Right? Yep). If you wanna know about Big Star - this is your one stop shopping... Buy this book!
A Must for the Power Pop Fan.......2006-08-27
This book covers just about everything you'd want to know about Big Star and all of the major players associated with the band. From Alex Chilton's beginnings in The Box Tops, thru meeting up with Chris Bell and company in Memphis and joining Big Star, to Alex's solo career is covered in quite a bit of depth. And Chris Bell's life and times is nicely covered, as well. Given that Chilton is basically a hermit and Bell died in a car crash almost 30 years ago, the depth of material in this book is quite impressive.
Fine history of a great band.......2006-01-09
This book is exhaustively researched and a thourough history of a great rock band. The fame eluded them but people in the know endow Big Star with a mythical status. The author presents an engaging history of not just the band but a period and feel of rock and roll in Memphis through the last three decades. Don't miss this if you are a fan.

I GIVE IT ONE MIDDLE FINGER WAY WAY UP.......2005-06-07
I WAS ALWAYS NERVOUS ABOUT FLIPPING THE BIRD, BUT KNOW I NOW IT IS NORMAL. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME AND TEACHES YOU THAT THE MIDDLE FINGER IS NORMAL
Totally great and silly.......1998-12-12
Surprisingly readable, and well-designed book about the middle finger and the history of "the bird."
I was a bit dubious that this topic could carry a whole book, but in fact, it does.
Fun and irreverent. Fingers up from me.
It is get a one finger up!.......1998-12-11
The middle finger has become a a family crest and now shall live on. A great gift!
The International Language.......1998-12-05
Did you ever stop to think that if you gave someone the "thumbs up" in Italy it would have a less than desired effect? Nay, it would be detrimental. Instead of encouraging and rewarding its recipient, the upturned thumb is in fact a rude command, beseeching whomsoever sees it to do unspeakable things with their thumb: things requiring the use of a handy wipe when finished. This and other extremely interesting and useful facts can be gleaned by the readers of this highly insightful monograph. I give it one finger up!
An excellent cultural critique of an age-old gesture.......1998-12-05
This book is, quite simply put,a revelation. It is the seminal work on the subject of the "finger". While highly entertaining, one is also amazed at the historical depth and cultural breadth this simple offensive gesture takes. It is a must read for those who have a passionate obsession, or a mere passing fancy, with modern culture and cultural anthropology.

Revision of Sams highest rated C# book-now we're taking it Visual! Part of the best-selling TY in 24 Hours series, this book reaches blue-collar coders on the verge of jumping to .NET programming. Completely updated for MS's "Everett" release, this book is 100% .NET -no messy legacy/beta code to muddle through. The author, James Foxall, has readers writing Visual C# applications within the first 80 pages of the book. Visual C# .NET is available as part of Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET suite of developer tools ($1,079 to $2,499) or as a standalone product ($109 before MS rebates). With the initial release of Visual Studio .NET in 2001, the focus was on the new language C# and not the developer tool Visual C#. Now that Visual Studio is moving out of the "early adopter" stage and into general acceptance by the bulk of the developer audience, the trend is toward Visual C# as a developer tool with less interest in the basis language. Teach Yourself Visual C# .NET in 24 Hours provides readers with 24 structured lessons with step-by-step guidance to real-world programming tasks including Windows and Web applications. James Foxall moves beyond the pure syntax covered in most C# books to guide readers through the basics of Visual C# .NET. Each chapter includes practice exercises, tips, notes, and cautions providing easy-to-understand advice on how to start programming quickly. Sidebars provide more experienced readers with tips that will ease their migration from Visual Basic 6 and Visual C++ to Visual C# .NET. James Foxall, MCSD, is VP of Tigerpaw Software, Inc.-MCSP specializing in commercial database apps. He is responsible for management of all Windows application development, and is an authority on application interface and behavior standards of applications for MS Windows and Office. He contributes to journals/magazines, speaks internationally, and has been featured in news shows, trade publications, and newspaper articles for his expertise. Wendy Haro-Chun, MCSD and MCP, has a Bachelor's in CS and MBA with an emphasis in Int'l Business. As Asst. VP of Internet Development for Sungard Insurance Systems, she is responsible for overall management of Internet product design and development.
Customer Reviews:
Visual C# .NET & Visual Studio.NET.......2006-08-08
James Foxall has written a book that clearly elucidates the mysteries of the Visual Studio.NET environment. Written in five well-organized sections, this book leads the reader through a step-by-step approach to building basic Windows applications. Using a "nuts-and-bolts" type of approach, the author presents the concepts of object-oriented Visual C#.NET programming via a series of brief, but effective projects found in each of the 24 chapters.
Starting with the fundamentals of objects, Foxall shows how to build a user interface using forms and controls. He then adds menus and toolbars to create workable applications. While performing these tasks, the reader begins to grasp the concepts of properties, methods, and events.
From the user interface, the reader learns the basics of C#.NET by writing brief lines of source code and how to manipulate data. Finally, the concept of designing custom objects using classes fulfills the author's objective of teaching the user how to design their own applications.
This text is indicated as a user guide for the beginning. However, I found it to be ideally suited for any one with even a modest programming background. To an aspiring Windows programmer, this text has good introductory value to satiate even the most curious.
My First C# book.......2006-08-04
In pursuing to update my technical knowledge, I decided to purchase this C# .NET 2003 book written by James Foxall. I was impressed at the level of detail and easy to understand content. What I was mostly impressed by is how the Author personally answered some of my questions without hesitation. That's something that I haven't been able to obtain from other book author.
I will definetely pursue purchasing from this author in the future.
Thought it was great.......2006-08-03
As I am new to programming, I thought I would go down the Sams publishing route and find a book that would teach me the basics and foundations for C#. And this is what the book did. I felt the author didn't scare you with technical jargon and slowly introduced you the more high-end stuff. The book is designed at beginner level and was pleased with the purchase.
Material OK, very badly organized for new programmers.......2004-10-26
The book does a decent job of covering visual C# material. But the way it is organized is so bad for new programmers that I can only give it one star. You keep getting "write this code, I will explain later" that most newcomers to programming will give up withing the first three chapters as all they do is point and click and write tons of code they have no ideah how it works. This book was obviously written by a programmer who doesn't teach new students. We have this book at work and none of the 4 people who used it had any success in learning to program in C#.
This is odd for a SAMS book, as they are usually excellent learning books. I would recommend the Teach Yourself C# in 21 days as a better tool for a new programmer to grasp the language.
Even for experienced programmers (and I have been one for 18 years), the book is hard to follow. Phrases like "now add this code ..." whithout saying where (you are stuck looking at pictures in the book and your source code file to finally figure out where the code is suppose to go) doesn't help one bit.
This is a teach yourself book, it should take you from scratch and teach you. All it does in the first few chapters is confuse you and discourage your from learning. I suspect this book was bought my many who ended up leaving it on their bookshelf thinking they cannot learn to program while the problem is not them at all. That is unfortunate!
Good book, but it doesn't teach C#.......2004-05-12
I just finished reading this book cover to cover and I'm afraid I don't know C# much better than I did before I started. I am now an expert in using the (really cool and powerful) Visual Studio.Net Integrated Development Environment, but I hardly learned a thing about programming. So, if you want to be able to create cool applications by dragging and dropping and using menus, this book is great. If you want to have a clue about the code behind your applications and/or learn some lessons in Object-Oriented Programming, you'll need another book. (...)
