Book Description
The central argument of this classic study is that by pursuing the goal of economic democracy, socialism can return to the heart of political life in the advanced capitalist countries. Aimed at socialists and nonsocialists alike, Robin Archer's compelling book clearly demonstrates that there is both a strong moral case for economic democracy and a feasible strategy for achieving it. The author defines economic democracy as a system in which firms operate in a market economy, but are governed by their workers. To show that that economic democracy is a morally desirable goal, he appeals to the value of individual freedom. To show that it is a feasible goal, he appeals to the advantages of a corporatist industrial relations system. A corporatist system enables workers to pursue economic democracy through a series of trade-offs in which they exchange wage rises or other goods for incremental increases in control. But rational governments and capitalists will only agree to these trade-offs if certain conditions are met. Archer sets out these conditions and argues that they have in fact been met in recent years. From reviews of the hardback: 'This is an important book, with many arguments and themes that will repay development. It connects with much new work in political economy that is currently emerging from economists and political scientists. It provides a different account of market socialism from many other versions on offer. It gives priority to the achievement of economic democracy within firms as the goal that will relaunch the socialist project, and it sees a highly organised labour movement as the means by which this project will be realised.' Andrew Gamble, Times Literary Supplement 'he has made the case for corporatism more compelling and more practical than any I have read for some time.' David Goldblatt, Political Studies 'an important new book' Will Hutton, The Guardian 'His sophisticated discussion of European socialism, especially its flirtation with corporatism, is exceptionally enlightening for students of contemporary political thought and possible practical action.' Choice 'Archer's feasibility strategy is an imaginative and tightly reasoned position.' Peter Bachrach American Political Science Review

Book Description
The Economics of Feasible Socialism--originally published in 1983--was a pathbreaking book. It identified a workable socialist program, achievable in the lifetime of a child born today, that avoided farfetched or Utopian assumptions and the deformations of "actually existing socialism" of the Soviet species. It has been immensely influential in the West, and is available in translation in China, Hungary and the Soviet Union.
Incorporating the many recent changes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, Alec Nove has updated his book to produce this second edition. Characteristically readable, controversial, and full of insights,
The Economics of Feasible Socialism Revisited will become essential reading for anyone concerned with evaluating the relevance of Marxism to contemporary social and economic problems and of the anti-socialist reaction typical of many economists in Eastern Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Not Another Hayek Hack.......2007-05-18
People should read books not throw mud. The very title of the other review suggests a "disciple" of FA Hayek and the Liberty Fund of neo-cons. Nove's book offers the serious student of political economy insight into ways in which the ideals of socialism can work with mixed state and market initiatives, without collapsing under the ideological weight of the overwhelming economics as ideology of the age of neo-liberalism. Intelligent readers should give Nove a read and situate his thinking in juxtaposition with the works of Amartya Sen for provocative ideas about where, say the French left, might turn for some new initiatives.
Another stop on the Road to Serfdom.......2007-02-06
You'd think the collapse of the Soviet government, the economic overhaul of the Swedish social sercurity system, the impoverishment of Cuba, and the downward spiral of Venezuala would be enough to discourage most utopian socialsts. But the repeated lessons of history have never been an impediment to utopians, and socialists in particular are forever re-defining socialism, past and present, in an effort to propose yet another round of social experiments that hopefully won't lead to the gulag this time.
Nove makes all the same apologetic arguments that have been made before- yes, the USSR collapsed in on itself- but that wasn't real socialism. And sure, the socialist utopias like Cuba have a standard of living that doesn't even rise to the American poverty level, but they're happy, right? And yes, people are wealthier today than ever before- but gosh darn it, some are wealthier than others, and that just won't do.
You won't find tables and graphs and numbers in the this. In fact, you won't find any economic theory at all. Reading Nove is like listening to a debate at the Fabian society a century ago, at which exceedingly clever young men and women outlined their notion of an ideal society based not on knowledge of human behavior, but on idealized notions of equality that ignored actual human behavior.
I picked this book up in a large bookstore, read the first chapter, and then skimmed through the rest, looking for something novel, some original idea, or at least some overlooked example of a redistributive system that was incentive compatible. All I found was the old arguments that come down to the same thing: If people don't act the right way, they have to be compelled to do so. And we've all seen where that leads.

Heavy reading, but very insightful.......2001-10-01
This book is not for the faint of heart. It delves heavily into the world of economic theory and policy, which may seem daunting to the layman. This is not a fun read. It quotes facts, statistic and theorizes in such a manner that everything must be absorbed before continuing. Yet it is a masterpiece in analyzing the workings of the Hungarian socialist system and why it ended. It examines the key difficulties in establishing workable socialism and follows the various reforms and 5-year plans that marked Hungarian Communist history. The book does not deal with historical events directly, but rather with the economic decisions that defined the direction the country took. A must read for all serious students of Hungarian Communist and post-Communist history.

"Blends candid insights on hospital care with a healthy dose of humor....Tongue-in-cheek comments will brighten the day of even the very ill." --The Bookwatch
Customer Reviews:
And How Are we Feeling Today?.......2006-03-09
This book is the best gift for those hospitalized or going through lots of tests. We first discovered this gem when it was given to my teenage son during one of his many hospital stays. He couldn't stop laughing! The book is so funny because it really nails how you are feeling about every procedure. We now give it to everyone as a get well gift when they are hospitalized. Everyone who has received it has loved it! It really brightens up an otherwise gloomy time. As another review states, though, make sure that the patient won't do damage to themselves when they laugh.
I'm Suing!.......2003-12-02
I just got home from quadruple bypass surgery and my wife gave me this little book to make me feel better. Of course, she's a retired nurse, so maybe I should have been more suspicious. The book sent me into so many fits of laughter that I was seriously worried several times whether I might either rupture my new cardiac arteries or re-split my sternum. It's absolutely hilarious. But I'd advise you to wait until the patient is well into recovery before giving it to him. Either that, or have a nurse handy. And for God's sake, don't let anyone read it before they go to the hospital. I'm ordering a copy for each of my doctors as a "thank you" gift.
I almost soiled myself........2002-07-27
The book is worth buying if only for the following chapter alone-Procedures and Diagnostic Tests: Your Life as a Laboratory Mouse. The bit about a mammogram has been the grist for e-mail funnies, and it is only one of the descriptions Hammer deliciously conjures. From the chapter on surgery, this is a snippet of her humor: "Postoperative Activities: Walking. As soon as you've stopped throwing up, they will get you out of bed and make you walk. This is the Lazarus therapy used in the Bible, and it worked quite well for him." This book is good for people on either side of the needle. A real gas!
from a medical view.......2001-08-25
I thought this book is hilarious and a definate worthwhile read. I work in the hospital, training to be a nurse, and it was educational to read a hospital experience from a patient's perspective. I had to laugh at how very true this patient was when it comes to the attitudes and behaviors of the medical staff. I was laughing so loud that many of the staff and patients themselves were looking like I should be the one admitted! This would be the perfect gift for any patient or medical professional. What I would like to see next is a book on the staff's perspective on a patient!
Health Problems?READ THIS BOOK! You'll never laugh harder!.......2001-06-12
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who has had any kind of run-ins with anyone (doctors, nurses, etc.) from the medical profession. This book makes even the most painful and depressing moments hilarious. It's something that's great to read even while you're in hospital because you don't have to start at the beginning - you can pick it up from anywhere.I don't normally laugh out loud when I read, but I was absolutely rolling as in my hospital bed. I own a copy, and am borrowing it out to others! **Here's an idea - don't know what to get that friend that you are visiting in hospital who has already gotten 2 thousand flower arrangements? Order them a copy of this book - I promise that it will be the best gift they ever got. Even the medical professionals will find this a hit! Try out her other books as well!!
Just remember - try not to "bust a gut" while reading! Enjoy!

Book Description
Brian Jones was initially the Stones' creative driving force, but by the late '60s, he was drinking too much and strung out on drugs. He left the band in 1969 and three weeks later was found dead in his swimming pool. Acclaimed author Terry Rawlings draws on new interviews to document Brian's ill-fated final days and hours and names his murderer.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging and captures a true sense of Jones' early life...packed with rare photos.......2007-01-10
Great read if you're a fan of Brian Jones and his work. Compared it with Bill Wyman's book, STONE ALONE, and details of his early struggles as a musician are pretty similar. As with any biography, what's true and what is not is always very questionable. However, this book gives the reader an insight of what kind of life Jones probably led and the path to his demise. I would rate STONE ALONE ahead of this book for reliable information because it's from the Stones' bassist himself. The Anna Wohlin book reads like a romantic novel, and the material is very questionable. This book is more for diehard fans of Brian Jones.
Who Killed Christopher Robin.......2006-09-25
I have this book and felt it did not show the real Brian Jones. Brian was a very intelligent, great musician,
and basically a good and decent man. When people use drugs/alcohol their personality changes dramatically.
When Brian was at Cotchford Farm he was attempting to get his life back on track. In writing about Brian
one has to remember this was the Sixties and the culture, attitudes and social beliefs were entirely different
than in the following decades. Brian was a drug addict and probably an alcoholic. He was trying to cope with
his problems with the other band members, his life in general. Since there was no rehab or counseling like
there is today he felt this was the only way to handle it. I truly believe Brian Jones was definitely murdered.
Probably by Frank Thorogood with some help. Brian was more than the demonized versions I have seen in
several books. It is only fair to this musician to portray him in all aspects and not just when he was messed
up, and depressed. He was often compassionate, kind and cared deeply about his loyal friends. Let us remember this please
Of all the Brian Jones books, the best IMHO.......2006-08-02
Brian Jones was the founder of the Rolling Stones, and this book unflinchingly lays everything out about his life for the reader. Based on years of research and interviews with people that knew him, it is probably the most factual of the books I have read. It also lays the ground for some serious discussion about the possibility that Brian's swimming pool death was not accidental. This is not a "new" revelation - murky details about the death have been scrutinized pretty much since the day after it happened in July 1969. The author clearly demonstrates that it is within the realm of extreme possibility that Brian's death was no accident. Oh, and someone allegedly confessed, as well.
Apparently Keith Richards has spent some effort over the years trying to get to the bottom of just what happened the night Brian died. This is the book that Keith said, "...the cat [the author] probably got it about right". This statement says to me that Keith feels this is probably the closest we'll ever get to any truth.
The Strange Death Of An Evil Genius.......2006-03-24
Rolling Stones biographies are plentiful, yet the release of this book in 1994 increased the speculation that Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones was murdered soon after he was dumped from the band in 1969. Padded out with early details of Brian's teenage fatherhood to three bastard offspring by separate girls, his self-absorbed behaviour and violence towards his girlfriends, this update makes you wonder how the unlikeable character made it as far as he did. After revealing little of note in the first half, the book gets juicy when recreating Brian's final days spent in the company of celebrities including Maurice Gibb, Steve Winwood and John Mayall at his country home. Theories about the guitarist's pool drowning remain a little haphazard, but Who Killed Christopher Robin? offers some sympathy for the little devil.
Who killed BrianJones.......2006-03-01
Interesting book and theory on who killed the Stones founding member. After reading this book I was convinced there was more to Jones' death than an accidental swimming accident. The book flows nicely and leaves one quite sad to see the effect greed, fame and fortune can have on some people.
Book Description
The Virtual Self is a concise, critical introduction to social life in an age of rapid technology and high speed communication. It addresses a fundamental question of our time: is contemporary society significantly different from the society that formed the theories and basic concepts of the founders of sociology? Our rapidly changing society requires innovative sociological concepts, and this book proposes 'the end of the social', a time somewhere between modernity and postmodernity when we can no longer assume that people inhabit a public sphere of civic discourse. The Virtual Self addresses major issues in sociology that inform virtually all of a student 's course work. Of central concern is the relationship between everyday life and social structure in key domains of communication, personality, work/family, leisure and entertainment, and economics. At the same time, the book advances an argument about our stage of civilization, joining dialogue with critical thinkers and theorists who bemoan the loss of community and civic discourse. These perspectives from critical theory and postmodernism are introduced in readable, digestible ways as discussions are linked to standard sociological concerns such as the relationship between self and society.Written in a lively, accessible style, The Virtual Self presumes no sociological background and cites ample literature for further reference. Students and scholars will find it an engaging and exciting text.

Book Description
What is Enterprise Resource Planning and why does it matter? Like The Goal, Why ERP? is a short novel about a manager in a furniture manufacturing business who is charged with learning about and implementing a new ERP system, SAP R/3. The story tells of his experience and provides a non-technical, non-programming introduction to the basic concepts and architecture of ERP systems.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Introduction to the Enterprise Software Concept.......2005-09-07
I am a Professor in the Management Information Systems area and I use this book as a quick and relatively painless introduction for students who know absolutely nothing about the software that supports Integrated Business Systems. It is an excellent read for that purpose. It focuses on why Enterprise Systems are valuable for some companies, the dangers of blind adoption, the value and power of systems integration, and some of the costs associated with implementing these systems. Just as important, it does this in an interesting way. At least more interesting to my students, who are either dual majors in business administration and information systems or straight majors in some area of business administration. While the other reviewers are correct in their blistering reviews of the book from a technologist's perspective, the book is not written for technologists. As the title suggests, it is a primer and primers are written at the most elementary level.
I have not come across a better book for someone with no knowledge of Integrated Business Systems to learn quickly in 119 pages what Enterprise Systems are about.
REVIEW FOR STUDENTS.......2005-04-21
I read this book as a requirement for my Management Informations Systems class. While it is a dry read, I acknowlege that it was a noble effort to present the information in the form of a novel. Do not read this book if you are an expert on SAP or very familiar with ERP systems. This is little more than a text book put in the form of one large example. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.
Why ask why?.......2004-10-28
I picked up this little jewel hoping to learn something about SAP's R/3 product and believe me, it took some serious effort to plow my way through this loathsome tale. The Goal has been done to death by everyone, including Goldratt, and this book is a pale imitation of that classic novel. If you know absolutely nothing about MRP or ERP, then this book might be helpful. It does motivate the need for such systems and production controls in general. The book also has some screen shots of SAP's product, so at least you'll have some basic familiarity with that system before you see it on a workstation. I think I'd rather read the User's Guide to R/3 (or to my VCR) than read this book.
Why ERP? No, really, why ERP?.......2003-11-13
I wouldn't even make paper airplanes with this book - because they would suck too. When millions of books were burned in WWII, why did they miss this one?
Not a good read, pick up The Goal or Better Together instead.
This Book Sucks.......2003-11-13
Why ERP? Because I didn't have a choice as to read it or not. I'd rather take a bath in gasoline and light myself on fire than read this thing again.
