Great book.......2007-06-16
Great book for reference and self study if you remember your circuit analysis and laplace transforms. Very detailed with out making ones eyes gloss over. Do wish it had a few more d examples but overall cant complain.
still an outstanding, encyclopedic treatise.......2006-03-23
Mulling through some old reviews, I noticed that I left a technical error (more of a technical glossing-over) in my review of Franco's opus. It's high time I corrected it, since it's been there for more than a year, no doubt befuddling readers who thought they knew something about analog electronics. Specifically, I had said that the designation of the input terminals as '+' and '-' really made no difference: it's more reflective of convention, sciz. (assuming something other than a difference amplifier), the significant input network is attached to '-'--with '+' grounded--if the configuration is inverting, but to '+' (with '-' grounded) if the configuration is non-inverting. That's the truth, but it isn't the whole truth. When we examine border cases--those that tax the operational limits of the device, straying outside the "passband," analogically speaking (yes, I know, that typically refers to a frequency range, but here I use it to address an input voltage difference range)--the otherwise cosmetic or mnemonic choice of '+' or '-' terminal becomes rather more manifest. Remember that the amplifier actually amplifies the input voltage difference in the microscopic sense--even though it implements a semantically notable linear operation in the macroscopic sense--relying upon the feedback network to remanufacture an appropriate input voltage difference that maintains the nominal purpose of the circuit. When things go ape and the input voltage difference is much too high or, alternatively, much too low (and that may be a tough nut to crack), the output characteristic will be dependent upon what was connected to '+' and what, to '-'.
Now, wasn't that as clear as mud? Remember, I'm constrained to use words, and words alone, as my medium of communication, and, since I have only a fraction of a thousand words, I have only a fraction of a picture!
Excellent Book.......2005-05-27
This is an excellent book on linear circuit design, the best I have read to-date. It covers feedback theory, ideal op amps, active filter design & most importantly practical op amp limitations. It also covers voltage regulators, voltage references, ADCs, DACs, op amp noise & more. What I liked most was the combination of mathematical circuit analysis & practical design. Too many books show useful circuits without bothering to explain anything about how they work. It also has plenty of exercises to tax the brain.
As good as it gets..........2005-03-17
Really a top notch book on op-amps and almost anything you'd ever do with them. Has math where it's needed and rules of thumb where it isn't. Actually is just a great analog design book altogether. Really the definative text on the subject of designing with op-amps.
Excellent Resource for Student or Practicing Engineer.......2003-02-23
This book can be an excellent resource for any Analog Integrated Circuit Design Electrical Engineering student or practicing engineer. The book can assist in the modeling of IC devices such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors. It also sensibly covers the building blocks of analog integrated circuits: gain stages, output stages, level shifters, current sources and mirrors.
The reader is expected to have a general understanding of electronics, frequency-domain analysis procedures, and understand basic Pspice operations. The book generally covers enough material for a half-year of courses at the upper-division/graduate level although the book could certainly be useful for a single class.
The material generally starts out as basic and proceeds to a complex level. There are helpful figures and diagrams on nearly every page and the organization is generally sensible and intuitive. There are many worked examples and hundreds of end-of-chapter problems. The text is supported by a website that offers downloadable design projects, additional examples, and design software. Franco has done an admiral job at presenting a complicated subject.
Here's a brief description of SOME of the topics found in each chapter:
1) Basic amplifier concepts and arrangements are explored. Also covers negative feedback, the loop gain, and basic circuit analysis.
2) Current-to-Voltage & Voltage-to-Current Converters, Current, Difference, Instrumentation, and Transducer Bridge Amplifiers.
3) Active Filters. Transfer Function, 1st order, KRC, multiple-feedback, state-variable, audio, and biquad filters.
4) Filter Approximations, switched-capacitor, universal sc filters, and cascade design.
5) Low-input bias-current Op amps, low-input-offset-voltage Op Amps, Op Amp Circuit Diagrams, and Input offset Voltage.
6) Open and Closed loop response. Transient Response, Input and Output Impedances, and effect of Finite GBP on Filters and Integrator Circuits.
7) Noise Dynamics and Properties. Sources of Noise and Low-Noise Op Amps.
8) Stability problems. Stability of CFA Circuits and in Constant-GBP Op Amp Circuits. Internal and External Frequency Compensation.
9) Schmitt Triggers, analog switches, voltage comparators, and precision rectifiers.
10) Sine, Triangular, Sawtooth, and Monolithic Wave Generators. Also Multivibrators and V-F and F-V Converters.
11) Voltage References and Regulators. Switching, linear, and monolithic switching regulators.
12) Performance Specifications, D-A and A-D Conversion Techniques. Oversampling Converters and Multiplying DAC Applications.
13) Nonlinear Amplifiers. Phase-Locked Loops, Monolithic PLLs, Analog Multipliers. Log/Antilog and Operational Transconductance Amplifiers.

A Good One!.......2000-11-04
I'm a 3rd year electrical engineering student who thoroughly enjoyed this book. It covers all aspects of Op-amps as well as the support chips. I, as well as all of my class mates, found it easy to follow as well as extremely informative. I would highly recommend it to ANY E.E. student as well as instructors.
Book Description
Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement proposes a new methodology for the design of analog integrated circuits. The usefulness of this methodology is demonstrated through the design of an operational amplifier. This methodology consists of the following iterative steps: description of the circuit functionality at a high level of abstraction using signal flow graphs; equivalent transformations and modifications of the graph to the form where all important parameters are controlled by dedicated feedback loops; and implementation of the structure using a library of elementary cells.
Operational Amplifier Speed and Accuracy Improvement shows how to choose structures and design circuits which improve an operational amplifier's important parameters such as speed to power ratio, open loop gain, common-mode voltage rejection ratio, and power supply rejection ratio. The same approach is used to design clamps and limiting circuits which improve the performance of the amplifier outside of its linear operating region, such as slew rate enhancement, output short circuit current limitation, and input overload recovery.

Prods Imagination.......2007-08-22
Like many Kluwer books, format is poor and editing non-existant. But unlike many Kluwer books, there is some content. Some unusual circuits are presented, jogging your imagination. However, there are also many typos and undefined symbols that make understanding the circuits a workout. Also, just where the circuits work and where they run into trouble isn't discussed much.
Definitely aimed at the practicing designer, more than the student, so much is left unsaid: pro's discussed without the con's.
Still, an interesting work.
Nice approach, good ideas.......2007-01-09
Nice approach for design. The structural methodology his really not easy but you don't need to control it to enjoy the book. I working on it! It's not so far away from intuituve approach and the texts help in that way. Covers really good circuits ideas and opens your mind for some new of your own. Great job, great reference book.

The human side of the presidents of the U.S........2004-07-28
While I was perusing a used bookstore, I spotted this book and I only had to look at a few pages before I bought it for my children. Not only are the jokes very good and appropriate for the middle school child, but they can also learn some history as well. Each section of jokes about a particular president is noted with the name, the years they served and their numerical position in the presidential order.
The jokes are about the characteristics of the presidents. For example, some of the jokes deal with William Howard Taft's weight, Calvin Coolidge's silence, and Ulysses S. Grant's lack of musical knowledge. This helps the reader to learn something about the people who were president rather than the events that occurred while they were in office. I had my children read it and then asked them questions about the men who led our country. In school they generally learn only events and this helped them understand that presidents are also people with very human traits.

Book Description
Maya Plisetskaya, one of the world’s foremost dancers, rose to become a prima ballerina of Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet after an early life filled with tragedy and loss. In this spirited memoir, Plisetskaya reflects on her personal and professional odyssey, presenting a unique view of the life of a Soviet artist during the troubled period from the late 1930s to the 1990s.
Plisetskaya recounts the execution of her father in the Great Terror and her mother’s exile to the Gulag. She describes her admission to the Bolshoi in 1943, the roles she performed there, and the endless petty harassments she endured, from both envious colleagues and Party officials. Refused permission for six years to tour with the company, Plisetskaya eventually performed all over the world, working with such noted choreographers as Roland Petit and Maurice Béjart. She recounts the tumultuous events she lived through and the fascinating people she met—among them the legendary ballet teacher Agrippina Vaganova, George Balanchine, Frank Sinatra, Rudolf Nureyev, and Dmitri Shostakovich. And she provides fascinating details about testy cocktail-party encounters with Khrushchev, tours abroad when her meager per diem allowance brought her close to starvation, and KGB plots to capitalize on her friendship with Robert Kennedy. Gifted, courageous, and brutally honest, Plisetskaya brilliantly illuminates the world of Soviet ballet during an era that encompasses both repression and cultural détente.
Still prima ballerina assoluta with the Bolshoi Ballet, Maya Plisetskaya also travels around the world performing and lecturing. At the Bolshoi’s gala celebrating her 75th birthday, President Vladimir Putin presented her with Russia’s highest civilian honor, the medal for service to the Russian state, second degree. Tim Scholl is professor of Russian language and literature at Oberlin College. Antonina W. Bouis is the prize-winning translator of more than fifty books, including fiction, nonfiction, and memoirs by such figures as Andrei Sakharov, Elena Bonner, and Dmitri Shostakovich.
Customer Reviews:
interesting, revealing.......2003-05-07
I loved the book even though at points it was hard to follow. Sometimes it got a little too confusing with lot of russian names and positions. But it was great reading about her life and ballets.
Fabulous!!.......2002-07-27
Read this and know what a great artist is all about. She is the ballerina par excllence, and Makarova would agree.
Her dying swan was so overwhelingly great in person, which I saw three times, that audiences yelled for thirty minutes for her to just bow to them again and again. She repeated the dying swan or part of it at one performance I attended and there was pandemoinium. Her arms are perfect wings, waving naturally in the winds that she made you belive in. She metamorphosed herself into a swan before our eyes. Indeed, her other ballet scenes were of the smae magnitude. Her examples from Giselle, Manon Lescaut etc. made huge fans out of haters of ballet.
When we went back stage to get autographs there were over a thousand people waiiting to see her, touch, applaud her once more.
To read her book is to know the horrors of the Soviet system of old, with its repression of people like her. We had only small samples of her art, and now her great Autobiography...Plisetskaya will live forever in the records of ballet, even Nureyev and Barishnikov in thier spheres can only touch her greatness..Makarova is the closet , very much so, but Madame Plisetskaya is the ballet Diva of the universe, and this book will help you see why.
There are films of her dancing that mezmerize, even through the weirdness of TV imagery and snow.
Buy this book and begin to know about the art of ballet by its supreme practioner.
A great story by a great ballerina.......2002-07-19
Written with honesty, in a personal and intimate way, this is the fascinating yet horrifying story of life for the foremost ballerina in Russia under Stalinist, and after his death, equally cruel communist rule. While she was being used to show off the brilliance of Russian ballet, dancing for visiting foreign dignitaries, she was followed, spied on, given little money, and for fear of defection, not allowed to leave the country with the rest of the Bolshoi company.
Although by then she was in her forties, I was lucky enough to have seen her dance here in the USA and in Paris. Her 'Odette/Odile' and her 'Dying Swan' were, I think, the best in the history of dance. Her book is a page-turner. I couldn't put it down.
I also highly recommend the videotape, "Plisetskaya Dances". Wait til you see her leaps where her foot touches the back of her head!

Book Description
The last thirty years of cultural theory have seen a vigorous analytic focus on the human body both as the subject of cultural representations and as an escape from their repressive influence. Rare is the account that focuses on the most obvious fact about the body: it is the stuff out of which human beings are made.
Generously and variously illustrated, this volume gathers together the work of literary critics and artists, classicists, art historians, and specialists on the history of the body, who survey the strangeness and variety with which the body has given human beings form. Richard Leppert traces how the representation of little girls responds directly to the cultural anxieties of modernity. René Girard plots how starvation becomes an art form, while Eric Gans surveys the contemporary phenomenon of body modification. Sander Gilman explores aesthetic surgery as a response to human unhappiness. Simon Goldhill discovers in the Roman empire the initial stirrings of institutions that focus on the spectacle of the body, and Cynthia S. Greig provides a glimpse of what the history of photography would look like if male nudes replaced female ones. Marion Jackson details how the different physical existence of the Inuit guides the way they make art. Joseph Grigely transforms aesthetics as usual by focusing on the disabled body, while Tobin Siebers describes the traumatic appeal in both fine art and the media of wounded flesh, whether human or animal.
The Body Aesthetic is a broad exercise in cultural studies and will address a variety of readers, from those interested in detailed, theoretical accounts of the body, to those interested in belles lettres, to those interested in fine art.
Tobin Siebers is Professor of English, University of Michigan.

Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE BEST.......2005-10-22
DICK ENBERG DOES A GREAT JOB IN THIS BOOK ABOUT HIS BROADCASTING CAREER. HIS RELATIONSHIPS WITH AL MCGUIRE, BILLY PACKER, MERLIN OLSEN, DON DRYSDALE AND MANY MORE ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IN THIS ENTERTAINING, INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK. HIS INSIGHTS ABOUT AL MCGUIRE IS ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY. I HAVE READ MANY SPORTS BOOKS BY BROADCASTERS, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE COME ACROSS. I ALWAYS RATED DICK ENBERG AS AN EXCELLENT SPORTSCASTER NO MATTER WHAT SPORT SUBJECT HE COVERED. ONE OF MY FAVORITES SHOWS HE HOSTED WAS SPORTS CHALLENGE (WHICH IS OCCASIONALLY ON ESPN CLASSIC CHANNEL). HIS COVERAGE OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND PRO FOOTBALL IS LEGEND. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL SPORTS FANS. A GREAT READ.
Oh My! is right on !!.......2005-01-10
For anyone who has had the privilege of listening to the smoothest, most knowledgeable, and "easiest to take" sports broadcaster of them all, this book goes down as a must read. I devoured it in two sittings (which is rare for me) and the only reason I put it down the first time was because I had to go to work! Warm, insightful recollections from a wonderful gentleman (and as you will discover, sometimes prankster!) who has seen it all, and has the unique ability to make every amazing story come to life in the friendly and cozy style that anyone who has followed his remarkable career over the years has come to know and appreciate. (Now I look forward to viewing the bonus dvd!) Mr. Enberg, thank you so much!! (and Oh My!)
This Book, Like Enberg, Delivers!.......2004-12-31
Dick Enberg has always inspired trust in me. I always felt that he really cares about what he is doing, and that he is just as excited about the event he is broadcasting as any die hard fan watching or listening at home. He calls each game with such grace and class, that it is easy to take his talent for granted. This book allowed me to get a broader look at the man himself, and to find out that I have not misplaced my trust.
There is not a dull moment in this book. It covers the gamut emotionally, from poignant stories about Al McGuire to hilarious fun with Don Drysdale and Bob Uecker. Throughout it all, more and more of Dick Enberg is revealed, and the reader is able to gain insight into Enberg's drive, honesty, sense of humor, competitive nature, and sincere desire to present the best possible product to his audience. Many different sports are covered and the tone of the book is one of respect for the sports, and for the sports community.
The broad scope of the book allowed me to read about a wide range of sporting events and the unique nature of each event, both satisfying me and leaving me thirsty for more. So, I'm hoping that there will be a sequel because I'm sure that this was just the "tip of the Enberg." There is something for everyone in this book and I'm sure you will really enjoy it.
Oh My, What a Great Book!.......2004-12-27
Anyone who has watched sports has heard Enberg's classic "Oh My!" comment for great plays and recognizes him as one of the greats in broadcasting. Oh My is a fascinating tale of his life and adventures in sports from his early days in college through now. The stories he has are classic and it's always a joy to listen to him do a game whether it be football, basketball, etc.
Pick this book up and enjoy a classic tale through his days in broadcasting!
Oh, My! This is a GREAT book!.......2004-11-30
This is a fascinating book, and makes a wonderful Christmas gift. The story of Dick Enberg's life is inspirational, well-written, and a page-turner. And most important, for people like me - you do not have to be a sports fan to enjoy reading this. Anyone can appreciate the stories, from Enberg's insightful view of his humble Michigan childhood to his ardent dedication to his challenging craft. With a career of great success, including numerous Emmy's, awards, and accomplishments, Enberg also relates many humorous mishaps and anecdotes from the sports booth, while providing a realistic glimpse of the hard work going on "behind the scenes" in any network broadcast. Enberg's love of family, his honesty about personal problems, and his work ethic make reading this a treat. I highly recommend this book, for men AND women. And its great for teen-agers, because one of the secrets of this man's celebrated career was his preparation and effort to seize opportunity, along with a fervent appreciation of education. Thumbs-up for this one, you'll enjoy every page!!
