Book Description
Digital filters and real-time processing of digital signals have traditionally been beyond the reach of most, due partially to hardware cost as well as complexity of design. In recent years, low-cost digital signal processor (DSP) development boards have put this within reach. This book will break down this design complexity barrier by means of simplified tutorials, step-by-step instructions, along with a collection of audio projects. Design formulas are presented to build the digital equivalent of standard audio filters: lowpass, highpass, and bandpass.
Customer Reviews:
easy to write code based on the book's equations.......2006-03-12
Lane et al start off with a quick review of the general case of DSP filters and the use of transfer functions to model them. This leads naturally into a bifurcation, yielding Finite Impulse Response and Infinite Impulse Response filters.
The theory is presented in concise fashion. And with no problem sets in the chapters. Seems more like a summary of material you perhaps should have learnt in a more leisurely text. Example codes are given in C++. Short subroutines. There is very little need or usage of the object oriented nature of C++. If you need to code from the formulae in the book, the example codes can be used to get you started. But for most engineers, this may not even be necessary. A modicum of acquaintance with whatever language you write in should suffice.
Good for implementation details, go elsewhere for theory.......2005-12-12
The title for this book may be misleading. Unlike most books on this subject, "DSP Filters" deals with a very specific class of digital filters, the infinite impulse response (IIR) filter. In addition, the IIR filters described are of the "maximally flat" gender. DSP books in general dedicate no more than a chapter or less to this particular subject. There are two reasons that an entire book on this subject might be a worthwhile read. First, these types of digital filters closely resemble filters which traditionally have been the backbone of audio electronics since the beginning of audio engineering. This is not to say that the maximally flat IIR filter is useful only in audio - there exists a wide range of applications for these filters, from instrumentation to business economics since, after all, an IIR filter is nothing more than a moving recursive average. The second purpose of this book is to fill the void of information on the subject. The details of this particular field of DSP seem to have fallen through the cracks of the university curriculum, DSP textbooks, as well as semiconductor industry support. There are many reasons for this lack of detailed treatment on the subject. Even though the DSP industry strongly supported digital audio over a decade ago, the present focus is moving rapidly in the direction of wireless products. There may be a return to industry support of digital audio, since high quality audio will very likely become an important part of the future wireless market. A final conjecture as to why there exists a lack of treatment on this subject in other books is the prevailing DSP philosophy that analog filters are inferior due to their non-linear phase characteristics, therefore, there would be no reason to model analog filters in the digital domain. The finite impulse response (FIR) filter is the mainstay of DSP filter technology, since it has the ability to produce linear phase characteristics. In many applications, including audio, this may be very advantageous. However, there are numerous applications (such as fixed band equalizers, tone controls, and parametric equalizers), which do very well with analog filters, and therefore are ideal applications for the maximally flat IIR filter. In this case, the advantage of digital versus analog is not to "improve" the phase or magnitude response characteristics, but rather to add inherent stability to the filter response, as well as the ability to tune the response based on digital control of the filter's cutoff (or center) frequency, bandwidth (or Q), and gain. The table of contents of this book is as follows:
SECTION I: IIR FILTER DESIGN FORMULAS
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Filter Design Basics
Chapter 3: Digital Basics
Chapter 4: First-Order Low-Pass Filter
Chapter 5: First-Order High-Pass Filter
Chapter 6: Second-Order Low-Pass Filter
Chapter 7: Second-Order High-Pass Filter
Chapter 8: Second-Order Bandpass Filter
Chapter 9: Second-Order Band-Stop Filter
Chapter 10: Peaking Filter
Chapter 11: Shelving Filter
Chapter 12: Cascaded Low-Pass Filter
Chapter 13: Cascaded High-Pass Filter
Chapter 14: Cascaded Bandpass Filter
Chapter 15: Cascaded Band-Stop Filter
SECTION II: FILTER PROJECTS
Chapter 16: Introduction
Chapter 17: Tone Control
Chapter 18: 60 Hz Hum Eliminator
Chapter 19: 31-Band Graphic EQ - I
Chapter 20: 31-Band Graphic EQ - II
Chapter 21: 4-Band Parametric EQ
Chapter 22: Digital Crossover
APPENDIX: Odd-Order Filters
The code for all of the filters and projects is implemented in C++ and is very easy to understand. There isn't much here in the way of theory, so it would be best if the reader already knew the theory behind DSP and was just coming to this book for the implementations/examples missing in other books. The source code for all of the examples is available at the book's website. Since Amazon kicks out reviews with website addresses, suffice it to say all you need to do is type "dspaudiocookbook" into Google and the first address you see will be the book's website complete with example code.

Book Description
The recent emergence of joint business-labour sector councils represents a major innovation in Canadian industrial relations. The federal government and certain provincial governments have developed these councils as a key component of their human-resource development initiative. This collection brings together the views of economists, political scientists, and industrial-relations specialists on this important experiment.
The authors suggest that, despite its innovative spirit, the sectoral initiative is fragile. Its future viability and wider diffusion depend on mutual trust and the long-term commitment of labour, management, and governments. Still, the consensus-building approach is seen as a remarkable achievement in Canada's adversarial institutional climate, with the potential to transform the nature and direction of Canadian labour-management relationships.
In bringing together a wide range of views on sector councils, this book is a singular resource for all those interested in industrial relations, labour economics, and public policy.

Book Description
Two for the Show outlines and gives examples of team comedy in the twentieth century in all media: stage, film, radios, TV, records, tapes, cassettes, and CDs. The book is unique in covering the comedy teams of the 60's, 70's, and 80's.
Since 1982, there have been no new comedy teams. The only changes have been separate career credits (Jerry Stiller, Seinfeld, Dick Martin, TV Director) and the demise of the team comedians.
Customer Reviews:
Laughs from the past.......2000-11-10
Finding out about my favorite team was great but I laughed out loud at almost all of the mucho material - without a lot of editorializing and chockablock words - from live stage to all kinds of audio and film. For the beach, the doc's office or the smallest room in the house, frequently without a window. Go for it>>>
Two forthe price of one........2000-07-07
Excellent concise summaries of careers and brief bios of comedy teams from 1900 to present but the author, Lonnie Burr, is not the photographer as Amazon lists him, although the book provides numerous, terrific photos.
Gives examples of each team's comedy style and routines and how the styles work in the various Twentieth Century media changes and evolutions.

The Cognitive Neuroscience of Music
ASIN: 026262107X |
Book Description
This work, which has become a classic in music theory since its publication in 1983, models music understanding from the perspective of cognitive science. The point of departure is a search for a grammar of music with the aid of generative linguistics. The theory, which is illustrated with numerous examples from Western classical music, relates the aural surface of a piece to the musical structure unconsciously inferred by the experienced listener. From the viewpoint of traditional music theory, it offers many innovations in notation as well as in the substance of rhythmic and reductional theory.
Customer Reviews:
Only for people who love music more as a puzzle than an art.......2006-01-05
This book tried to do for tonal music what Chomsky's work did for language. That is, come up with a theory that is dominant in its field in academia, has tremendous prestige, but almost no explanatory ability for how language or music actually works in the real world. The book is tedious with only a few interesting points.
The book has been in print more than twenty years (and that amazes me), but has had almost no impact on any musician outside of a small circle of academic thinkers for whom music is more of a technical and arcane game / puzzle than an art of expression and emotion. In fact, bringing up emotion and expression will cause immediate laughter and a great many derisive comments.
Save your time and money. Whenever I am tempted to read a book like this, I realize how little time I get to play my piano. So, I go do that instead and find it a much better use of my time.
very interesting, very technical.......2003-10-01
This very technical work is very interesting and uses a very valuable and relatively new approach. However it is very conservative musically, to the point of losing subjectivity. I would recommend James Tenney's writings instead. META + HODOS: A Phenomenology of 20th-Century Musical Materials and an Approach to the Study of Form (1961; Frog Peak, 1988), is available through amazon, or Hierarchical temporal gestalt perception in music : a metric space model with Larry Polansky, also printed in Soundings Vol. 13: The Music of James Tenney. Garland, Peter (Ed.) (Soundings Press, 1984) which has articles by and about Tenney, who takes a much more progressive and broad view than Lerdahl.
This book is a turning point in XXth century music theory..........1999-09-15
This book is a turning point in XXth century music theory. It admits "surface salience" as an important musical attribute (chapter 5), distinguishing it from the "reductional importance" of events. Should we work with a double conception of structure: surface structure (focusing on surface salience) versus deep struture (focusing on reductional importance)? The investigation of surface salience leads to questions related to tension and release, an area that is still to find its best approach. What is best in the book: the ability to uncover the making of a theory; the ability to rejuvenate and integrate schenkerian ideas with a critique of Meyer's approach (rhythmic structure versus metrical structure); the linguistic/cognitive connection. What is not so good in the book: the remarks on contemporary music (with an almost fascist view of inherited abilities)
Great formal theory of music, well-written.......1998-03-29
This formal theory of music does a great job of handling subjective and stylistic issues with different kinds of rules. Very well though-out. I wish they'd have worked out how counterpoint fits into their structure, but otherwise a great book.

Critical Readings: Sport, Culture and the Media (Issues in Cultural and Media Studies)
ASIN: 0335202020 |
Book Description
This book is about the conjunction of two of the most powerful cultural forces of our times - sport and media. It examines the ways in which media sport has insinuated itself into contemporary everyday life, and how sport and media have made themselves mutually indispensable as well as, for whole societies of people, unavoidable.
Book Description
Going beyond the conventional three act structure and exploring more inventive approaches, Alternative Scriptwriting challenges readers to take creative risks with genre, tone, character, and structure. It explores mainstream, personal, and experimental narrative forms, surveying both American and international films. In a field where novelty often equals commercial success, scriptwriters frequently strive to create screenplays that are innovative and exceptional.
Alternative Scriptwriting links scriptwriting to other forms of storytelling, and discusses issues including the three act structure, working with and against genre, character identification, and the implications of screenplay form. Key issues, examples, and case studies demonstrate what works, what doesn't, and why. Exercises encourage writers to explore new ways of viewing their work and to test the limits of their skills.
Additions to the third edition include:
* a comparative study of how two very different filmmakers handle different types of film.
* a look at ways in which narrative tension, story structure, and perspective can be used when writing for the digital film
* a study of adapting contemporary literature for film
*Examines a wider variety of genres than ever before, including extreme forms such as the melodrama and the thriller
*Includes a discussion of alternative film in the context of DVD technology
*Features a new study of adaptation from contemporary literature
Customer Reviews:
maybe I expected too much.......2007-05-09
I think one of the authors is/was a bigshot NYU film prof and the other guy is/was a big guy from Iowa's creative writing program. So I expected something top notch.
This book doesnt offer any direct advice on authoring an alternative screenplay. or at least nothing that rubbed off on me. Instead it struck me as a film studies book; something that focuses on a number of existing films and offers run of the mill commentary. THats my overall impression of the book - mediocre. It did provide a list of good films. nothing out of the ordinary but good films.
I would hate to take a class from these dudes - sounds boring as heck.
Since the author's dont have much insight or experience to offer, it would have been nice if they had the integrity and ambition to interview all or some the screenwriters that wrote the movies they list. then we could understand the actual insight that went into the story choices - rather than second or third rate conjecture.
If you're looking for a book with top notch insight on some extra-ordinary films, I suggest "Film As A Subversive Art" by Amos Vogel. It doesnt try to present itself as a screenwriting book but is filled with inspirational ideas.
Good Stuff.......2006-04-23
Having had co-author Jeff Rush as a professor at Temple University, I decided it was in my best interest to read his book before I took my next class with him. I thought it was worth my time, because it put into words a great many concepts that my mind has seen and comprehended so many times. It talks about the relationship of the main character to the secondary characters, how to flatten the acts of your story to pack a bigger punch later on, and it makes good use of scripts, both well-known and otherwise. It also has a chapter that explains WHY scripts are formatted the way they are. It's easy to just say, "This is how it is. We can't say why, but we can tell you how to copy it." But these authors explain in detail why certain terms are used and why certain formats make more sense than others. It's one of the better books out there on scriptwriting, well worth the investment in money and time. Fourth edition is coming out in 2006, too.
Thorough and Insightful.......2006-02-17
As a screenwriting instructor who's been looking a long time for a good book on the craft, I can heartily recommend this book for an in-depth discussion of advanced screenwriting principles. The academic perspective provides concrete methods for successful deviation from conventional form, and chapters on genre and structure are a must-read for any serious screenwriter.
Are you ready to rebel? .......2005-03-31
Successfully breaking the rules is the subtitle of this wonderful book by Dancyger and Rush. If you are tired of the typical three-act structure screenplay based on Act 1 being set up, Act 2 being the confrontation and Act 3 the resolution this book is for you. Before jumping to conclusions Alt. Scriptwriting will not provide you a format ahem template for creating unorthodox screenplays. This is exactly what Alt. Scriptwriting is about, getting away from these rules that bogged down many great aspiring and established screenwriters with details, plot points, reversals, camera angles etc etc...
Not to say that such details are not unimportant to creating a screenplay they are very important to say the least but oftentimes more attention is given to them than to what is the most important aspect of a creating a screenplay and that is the writing. Seems simple, but it often the most overlook aspect of creating a screenplay. So in Alt. Scriptwriting Dancyger and Rush take you on refreshers course in traditional three act screenplay structure, remember know the rules before you break them. After touching on the usual suspects plot, exposition, point of view and concept Dancyger and Rush get down to business. Explaining the pro and cons of a two act or even an one-act screenplay. Tarantino would be proud! From there much emphasis is given in explaining screenwriting structures of other cultures Europe, Asian and Australian.
Dancyger and Rush with great care explain the subtleties of mixing genres citing Wolf and Blade Runner as excellent examples. Word of note this is very important section of the book in our age of globalization, world economies, international conglomerates and of course the ability to almost customize anything we want learning how to blend genres is an important skill to possess.
Which leads to the most important aspect of the book to me and that is screenwriting in the digital age. The digital revolution has taken filmmaking by storm by empowering the ever growing independent movement and the often overlook niche filmmaking that is emerging. This is where Alt. Scriptwriting takes off by delving into the differences in creating a screenplay with a dramatic voice or narrative voice, the importance of creating believable characters, creating a screenplay based on a real events and of course making your screenplay believable to a reader.
Alt. Scriptwriting is definitely the book to have for all independent filmmakers or aspiring filmmakers who are thinking about writing as well as directing their own movies. Now for the novice screenwriter Alt. Scripting may not be the book for you and if you give a try you may want to read from to back to front. However, once you understand the concept of creating a screenplay or you have already written a few screenplays, attending workshops, purchased screenwriting help books and screenplays this book is a must have. It will provide you with a different outlook on screenwriting yes an alternative...
Good information for those already familiar with the basics.......2003-01-04
If you are already aquanited with basic screenwriting techniques regarding structure and character, then this is a must read. The "alternative" methods presented include examples from films, both mainstream and independent. By analyzing alternative methods, the reader not only learns new approaches to writing screenplays, but because of the contrast, learns what "traditional" screenplays should contain.

The new Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) exams are out, and they're significantly different from their predecessors in style and scope. CCNP Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack helps CCNP candidates prepare for their exams by reviewing essential elements of routing and switching theory and practice. These cards--which are really pages bound in a paperback book--aren't much good at teaching their subject (though a series of Quick-Reference Sheets aren't bad for building on what you already know). They're meant for pure review, and for identifying knowledge gaps that will require an explanatory text or reference to fill. This book covers four CCNP exams, and includes about 500 questions and a 30-page reference section for each.
A trip through a section of this book involves looking at the right-hand page for questions--there are two of them on each such page--then flipping the page to see the corresponding answers on the other side. Most answers are reasonably well explained (readers get an idea of why the correct answer is what it is), but they do not include citations of authoritative Cisco documents or even other Cisco Press reference books. Also, some readers may prefer a more randomized sequence to this book's grouping by theme. For that, they will have to resort to the quiz software on the companion CD-ROM. --David Wall
Topics covered: The subjects tested on the four Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) exams, including Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks 2.0 (BSCI), Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks 2.0 (BCMSN), Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (BCRAN), and Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support 5.0 (CIT).

The CCNP Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (CCNP Self-Study) provides final-stage preparation tools for the new CCNP exams announced by Cisco Systems in April 2003. These exams, 642-801 BSCI, 642-811 BCMSN, 642-821 BCRAN, and 642-831 CIT, have all been rewritten with new topical coverage updated to teach networking professionals what they need to know to manage their networks. The elements of this title have been created to provide comprehensive coverage of the new topics in all four exams.
As a final preparation tool for the four CCNP exams, this product complements official Cisco curriculum, other books, and other exam preparatory material. It marries three uniquely successful and complementary methods of late-stage test preparation. The Pack contains a testing engine with more than 800 questions, including simulation based questions. Fact-filled Study Sheets allow readers to review important exam topics, organized by exam.
Customer Reviews:
Very thin.......2005-10-04
I bought this based on the previous reviews. The book is very thin in content with about 250 cards per exam in the boook itself. It does not nearly cover the needed information. The CD is better with more flash cards per exam, and a testing engine, but still thin in coverage and explanations. It has information you can use, but not enough. If it was structured toward the exam requrements it would have been better. If you used the other Cisco press books, you don't need this, not even at the discounted price. As a comparison, the CCNA flash cards book was much better.
Excellent.......2005-07-28
In preparing for the 642-801, I found that there was too much information in the Paquet/Teare book to remember it all. I have no working experience with this exam topic so needed a way to fine tune my understanding.
The flash cards are in NO way similar to the questions on the exam, in format. The flash cards do not give you multiple choices and ask you to select the right one. The cards let you know whether you truly understand the topic or are just trying to weed the possible answers down to two likely ones.
I found that by using the cards, I was really able to zero in on the topics that I did not have a good enough understanding of.
I was disappointed to read one reviewers comments regarding the bulkiness of the book, "The format of the book is bulky and difficult - you have to HOLD it open."
1) The bulkiness only means that Cisco to not skimping on information provided and you are getting you monies worth with this book.
2) The pages are perforated. For each section (OSPF, BGP, etc.), I tore out the cards, mixed them up, and tested myself. When I felt I knew all the individual areas, I shuffled them all together allowing me to make sure I wasn't just memorizing answers given the order the questions were in. Many nights my wife found me wondering the house with cards in hand, quizzing myself. The cards (pulled out of the book) allowed me study anywhere.
This can not be used soley to pass the exam, but that is not the intention. Use this book at the end of your study to ensure that you have a thorough grasp of the topic.
Not very useful.......2004-12-29
Generally a pain to use and work with. The format of the book is bulky and difficult - you have to HOLD it open. As someone else mentioned, it crashed my Palm hard. It also wouldn't run on my desktop PC or my laptop, so the CD was worse than useless - it was a a big waste of time.
The material seems decent, but it's so difficult to access that I just put it down and didn't pick it up again.
CCNP Flash Cards and more!.......2004-03-12
CCNP Flash Cards and more!
This self study tool is the best off the shelf product money can buy for preparing to pass the current CCNP exams. The two CCIE authors are very knowledgeable and thorough. This book includes flash cards, practice questions, and quick reference sheets for all 4 CCNP exams. The electronic versions of the flash cards have been ported to work with Windows, Palm, and Pocket PC devices. I like both the printed book format and electronic flash cards.
What I found helpful within this book is the information presented in an easy to use, digestible format. The flash card format is comprehensive and flows from topic to topic throughout each exam. This book offers very useful "Quick Reference Sheets" at the end of each exam section. Each exam section also includes questions and answers for reinforcement of key exam objectives in digestible sections. The book's CD includes PDF versions of all the quick reference sheets and copies of all printed flash cards! Most of the time, the author's words are clear and concise--the book's layout is comprehensive and flows from cover to cover.
This book is split into four sections; BSCI, BCMSN, CIT, and BCRAN. This allows you to prepare for each of the single exams in the final hours. You can also use both the printed flash cards and electronic version on a hand-held device for maximum efficiency and time spent. The authors' technical background and knowledge are impressive. They must have had a difficult time working within the constraints of a flash card format and limiting their answers for clarity and exam preparation. Each page of the book includes two flash cards on the front page and the answers on the back. The book is indexed and tabbed for easy reference when you need to focus on a particular exam's topics such as BGP or STP. The book weighs in at just over 800 pages. The electronic flash cards allow you to focus on a particular exam and topic or shuffle the cards randomly per exam.
I was only able to locate a few small inaccuracies in this book. The few errors I did find were not technical in nature and won't be noticed by most readers. They won't affect your preparation and can be easily documented with an errata reference on the publisher's web site. Refreshingly, this book focuses not only on preparing you to pass the CCNP exams but really helps you to understand the exam topics involved! This book's author and technical reviewers have what it takes to present the exam topics in an efficient format for any certification candidate.
For the self-study candidate on a limited budget who wants a last minute exam prep tool, these flash cards are invaluable. They are presented in a well readable format and even the book itself is portable enough for the train ride or discrete cram time. When you want to prepare to pass the new CCNP exams, these flash cards, practice questions, and quick reference sheets are a must have!
The Palm flashcards crashed my PEG-NZ90 hard.......2004-01-10
These flash cards are very informative, as were the CCNA flash cards.
My problem is that I wanted to study them on the train to and from work using my Sony Clie or Palm m515. When I loaded the software on my Clie Peg-NZ90 (Palm OS 5), it crashed hard. I had to call Sony Support to get it working again, and it just wouldn't run on my Palm m515 (Palm OS 4.1). I got the same fatal error of both devices -- a 'Fatal MemortMgr.c, Line: 3564, Null handel' error.
The content of the book is great, but the palm OS software obviously was not tested very well.
