5 out of 5 stars a beginners right choice.......2002-08-13

beginning electronic commnication was a nightmare for me,especially i feared cumbersome electronic circuits. But thanx to this outstanding book.authors outstanding vision forces the student to find all these concepts in nature.

2 out of 5 stars Good for technicians...as an engineer source: FATAL!.......1999-11-05

If you are not a Communications Engineer, this book will take you throught some (very basic) theory. The book is TOO expensive for what it has to offer (to engineers). I don't recommended to any engineer, not anyway for such a steep price! . If you are a Technician, ok, it will do, but don't even think about doing some simple designs and use this book as your refence!.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic textbook relating to communications- and more.......1999-02-13

As a college student involved in computers, this book is a resource. As a student interested in network software, hardware, and/or administration, it's a necessity. This book answers about 75% of the questions that I had regarding the first two units of MCSE. While I didn't need it to pass the tests, it was on the job knowledge that gets you noticed.

          Book Description

`Given the highly specialised subject matter, which so easily degenerates into rather tedious calculations, this book is really amazingly interesting and competently executed.'

          - Mark Blaug, Professor Emeritus, University of London, Professor Emeritus, University of Buckingham, UK, Visiting Professor, University of Amsterdam and Visiting Professor, Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The transition from central planning in Central and Eastern Europe has resulted in a decline in social security. Transformation of Pension Systems in Central and Eastern Europe provides an in-depth examination of systems of social protection for the elderly.

The authors begin by analyzing the urgent measures required to respond to a changing economic system. They also consider the fundamental questions of redesigning old-age financial security which is embedded in an international debate on pension reform, taking into account the political and economic factors from a comparative perspective. Covering the Baltic states, Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics and Hungary, the development of pension security is traced from the late 1980s to the end of the 1990s. Using local pension experts with academic and administrative backgrounds, the country studies are characterized by a detailed and interdisciplinary perspective, and provide an economic, political, legal and institutional approach to pension systems development.

            Book Description

This collection of papers focuses on the recent pension reform experiences in Central-Eastern Europe, while starting from a broader theoretical and empirical context. It provides evidence for the political feasibility of radical pension reform, considered unlikely in the West. The approach is both multi-disciplinary and cross-regional: The book contains papers by economists, political scientists and sociologists. The authors come from Germany, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the US. The volume consists of four parts: First, general questions of transformation and social security in post-1989 Central Eastern Europe are addressed, followed by an introduction into issues and role models in the international pension reform debate. Then, three Central European country cases are presented, analysing institutional legacies, recent reform measures and relevant political actors. A comparative section on Central-Eastern European pension reforms concludes this book.

              Book Description

Growing up is bewildering and exciting to every child. This was particularly true for a child born during the Great Depression (1930's) and who also experienced the "Home Front" efforts of World War II. Coupled with these great national events was the fact that this child lived in a multi-ethnic "melting pot" city of Passaic, New Jersey.

The true growing up adventures are told in a series of stories, some with side-splitting humor, others highly poignant.

For example: How learning the "facts of life" from the older guys on the street corner caused a major lifetime disaster; how, with his best friend, he personally helped defeat Japan and Germany in WWII; how he witnessed the three greatest aeronautical events of the 20th century; how the handwriting rules in the Passaic schools caused a blunder in front of President John F. Kennedy which helped Kennedy to decide to send a man to the moon; how the structural design of the giant Saturn rocket booster was actually invented in a Passaic toilet bowl.

But more important, the stories provide the secret of how the immigrant-dominated Passaic uniquely prepared its children to succeed in America, and how it still doing it today.

              5 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful.......2000-11-21

I did not grow up in an ethnically rich city like Passaic. In fact, the opposite was true, as I grew up in a suburb of Washington, DC. However, even though I did not grow up in the same town or even the same decade, there were amazing parallels.

Parallels such as girls, or more precisely, the courage to talk to them. Or the camaraderie of boys growing up together and forming bonds that would last a lifetime. What about the big poker game and striptease? Wait a minute That didn't happen when I was seventeen (I sure wish it had though)! It did, however, happen to Bob Rosenthal.

Yes, "Wonderful Passaic" is just that; wonderful. It will inspire your own (possibly forgotten) recollections of growing up.

              5 out of 5 stars A dance through time.......2000-11-09

Robert Rosenthal's book is a glorious narrative memoir. His style, naive, gentle and kind, takes the reader back into the uncomplicated moments of youth. In recounting his memories, we are transported through the history of Possaic, a town brimming with multiethnic culture. It is the essence of America and it touches your heart. I recommend this book ...it is a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars A nostalgic look at a typical American town.......2000-11-08

I've been in New Jersey on a couple of occasions, each time just passing through on the way from somewhere to somewhere else. To the best of my recollections, I've never set foot in Passaic. But, after reading Bob Rosenthal's recently published book, Wonderful Passaic, I wish I had.

Subtitled "Memories and Recollections," Wonderful Passaic is exactly that: a charming, understated, wistful collection of closely observed and warmly remembered vignettes. Collectively, they beautifully illustrate what it was like to grow up at the height of the Great Depression, through the Second World War and the Korean War, in the ethnically diverse melting pot that was and is Passaic--a town that could seve as a metaphor for simpler, more innocent times.

In its pages, Wonderful Passaic covers the full range of experiences that a boy of any era could expect to encounter in the coming-of-age process. There are lessons to be learned about the importance of familiy ties. There are friendships established that will last a lifetime. There's the discovery of sex. There's the joy and heartbreak of public education. There is a wealth of other meaningful events, trials and tribulations, all of which contributed to the transformation from the naive child of yesterday to the man of today: a well-traveled and highly respected research engineer (among other talents) who influenced America's space program.

The common thread among all these waystops of life is, of course, the author's beloved hometown, which witnessed a number of surprising incidents, all filtered through the consciousness of someone who was on the spot at the time. Did you know, for example, that during WW II anti-aircraft gunners in Passaic mistakenly shot at (and luckily missed) a friendly plane, causing fires to spring up around the city? Were you aware that the cathode ray tube, one of television's prime components, was invented and built in Passaic? And what explanation can there be that the master clock at Passaic's Number 11 School stopped at the exact moment of FDR's death?

Told in unadorned, straightforward prose, Bob Rosenthal's Wonderful Passaic is by turns a humorous, poignant, heartwarming, and nostalgic paean to a specific place and time. It is highly recommended for anyone who has ever longed to return to the less compicated days of yesteryear.

                Book Description

Elvis Presley spoke to a whole generation of people through his music. Whether it was a ballad, a gospel hymn, or pure rock'n'roll, when he sang, people listened.

However, there was more to Elvis than his music and movies. Throughout his career he was questioned by mobs of adoring fans and interviewed by thousands of inquisitive reporters. Repeatedly he was asked personal questions about his life, ranging from love and marriage to his musical style, from his religious beliefs to his family. He answered them all in a polite and forthright way.

Elvis Speaks is a collection of Elvis's words--what he said on a variety of topics such as loneliness, performing in front of live audiences, how he felt about his fans, how he felt about being drafted into the army, music, love, and religion. The words are pure Elvis. They come from the heart and reflect the man behind the entertainer and beyond the gates of Graceland, the Cadillacs, the gold records, and the money. Elvis Speaks tells of a man who loved to entertain people and found heartache and happiness in a career that spanned nearly three decades.

                  Book Description

In an extraordinary revelation, Dr. Donald Hinton recounts a scenario that is startling in its assertion and incredible in fact. He presents the events of Elvis Aron Presley's last 24 years as told to him by "The King" himself through a collection of handwritten letters and cards, telephone conversations and photos, since his "death" in 1977. In them, Elvis is alive and well and living in seclusion as "Jesse," the name of his deceased twin brother.

Dr. Hinton risks his reputation and livelihood to bring this astonishing story to print because, he says, "Jesse" felt it was time to tell his fans the truth. Elvis' disciples and skeptics alike should welcome this opportunity to finally establish or lay to rest the truth about Elvis' death or life.

It is hard to fathom how any man would stake his reputation and very livelihood on such flimsy evidence. I can share that Dr. Hinton is easily swayed, however, because I happen to know him personally. He is passive and naive. He cannot look others in the eye. He cannot write either. Save your money.

There was tons of information on the website until someone shut it down (it's still there, but it's blank). If it is not true then why won't they leave the website alone? Is it a threat because it is true? If it is just some "crackpot" why bother?

                  1 out of 5 stars Hmmm...........2003-10-28

Well what do you know. It's the year 2003, almost 2004 and no evidence whatsoever to support the idea that Elvis is alive. Elvis is dead, and so is this book.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Is a Sham.......2003-01-07

I believe this entire book is a sham.

                  Where Do I begin?

After reading it, looking at the presented "evidence", I have concluded that absolutely nothing presented would lead ANYONE to think Elvis is alive.

Here are the facts: they justify the physical appearance being wrong by saying Elvis had plastic surgery in the 80's and a stroke last year (02), they justify his lack of DNA and fingerprints by saying NO real Elvis DNA exists, so we cannot compare it to anything. They say Lisa Marie loves her dad, and she believes it's really him, but then say she is not willing to provide DNA to prove it's him.

They provide a hair sample to the Doctor, KNOWING he will never be able to prove its from Elvis. It might be poodle hair as far as he knows.

They say it's over money, and Elvis Presley Enterprises is concealing the truth. And o yeah, "they" don't trust "Jesse" with any cash, so he has to live off other people. So he is a nomad, traveling around, alone and broke, hoping his "true" fans will care for him.

My take is that we have a impersonator from the 80's, who made a lot of money pretending to be Elvis, singing, waving, and dancing, then he got old and thought, gee wheeze, I had this surgery, and now I look old and hideous, so I might as well continue my charade. Yeah, that's the ticket, and on top that, I am not going to work for the rest of my life, because I am going to find idiots who think I'm Elvis and support me.

Fact: No where in this book does Dr. Hinton say he has ACTUALLY MET this guy. (Dr. Hinton has, however, given money and plenty of drugs to this guy though) To be fair though, "Jesse" has provided memorabilia that belonged to Elvis. To be unfair, it is complete junk you can buy in the Graceland plaza for ten bucks.

I say that if this is the real deal, and he wants so desperately to come clean, he needs to come public, get a court order for DNA from Lisa Marie, and re-claim his heritage he has tried so desperately to avoid.

I wouldn't be surprised if the return address on all Jesse's letters is a prison somewhere in Arizona.

I absoulutely love this book! It is indeed a must read for all elvis presley fans! I've never been interested in Elvis, but this book grabbed my interest entirely! Mr. Hinton has pictures, and detailed letters in the book that are actually real!! Call me crazy but I belive him!!! Elvis also wrote a heartfelt introduction to his fans about why he did what he did. I DEFINATLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK (To non-elvis fans as well)

3 out of 5 stars Understand MS' thinking.......2005-05-15

I agree with some of the feedback here. This is not a book for learning ASP.NET. But then the book does state this early on. By all means read my review, even if for an experience, but I wouldn't until you have had an experience with ASP.NET and Visual Studio. To appreciate this book for any benefit you can find from it, go on a course first.

This book is intended only for exam preparation and in places, it serves it's purpose well here. The official Microsoft textbook for the course is just as thick and goes into tremendous detail and manages to use simple language in places. It doesn't convey the exam experience, but then it's not designed to! I made essential notes for the first 10 chapters and, typed up, I have 5 pages. The first 10 chapters comprise 200! The MS textbook has demonstrations, practices, and explanations, which explains why it is so thick.

From what I can tell, in sitting the exam Microsoft don't expect you to be a world class ASP.NET developer. Microsoft appear mainly concerned with ensuring you can concentrate in intricate detail (trying not to scare you: the difference between some understandings is just one word), think according to the understandings and concepts associated with the task at hand (and remember them), and that you are virtually fluent with the tools and the technologies. I wouldn't sit the exam if you haven't played with Visual Studio and made at least a simple Web application. Judging by some of the sample questions, Microsoft assume you have done so and because you gain knowledge in the process, such as realising that a button doesn't have to be coded for other parts of a Web form to work. Programming skill comes with time and Microsoft are kind enough to understand this.

One lesson I drew from a sample question is that I need to read the exam question *very carefully* and study the provided answers with the same care. The exam is multiple choice so the real test is making a judgement call. This is just one of the daily skills involved with programming.

If you know the ASP.NET technology to the dot (at least to the knowledge requirement of the official course book), can read code and follow what its doing (whether correct or not), think programmatically (the science of writing a program), applying all applicable knowledge in the process, and devise a solution provided it solves the problem, you should pass the exam with flying colours.

That's quite a read I know, but then so is this book and only attempt it if you have done a course on ASP.NET. And, in my opinion, only read it to test yourself for readiness; to get a feeler.

                      2 out of 5 stars Frustratingly Incomplete.......2004-03-22

It looks like the book was rushed out the door. While there seems to be some good information in it, I was repeatedly frustrated with the end of the chapter tests asking questions that were covered nowhere in the book! Then when I did the first of the included Prep Logic tests, some of the answers were opposite of what was stated in the book. If you can't be consistent within the scope of the book it really throws it's reliably into question. Don't plan on using this as your sole resource.

4 out of 5 stars Passed using this book but stay away from prep logic.......2003-12-24

I passed the exam using this book. I use .Net at work and read one intro book before this one. This is a good book and good practice tests at the end of the book tested skills that the exam tested. I actually saw very similar questions on the test. Some of the sample questions did not come from the text of the chapters, which I see a lot of people complain about, but I was OK with that. They do explain in the opening chapter that this should not be used to learn the basics of the language.

One thing to note is that the Prep Logic exams included on the CD are awful. I've tried the ones that came with the 70-305, 70-306 and 70-310 books. All of them had blatant errors. For the 306 Prep Logic I did the first 5 questions and every one of the answers was blatantly wrong. Que really should dump those guys as the Prep Logic quality reflects poorly on their excellent books.

2 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS.......2003-11-03

I have passed some Microsoft exams using Exam Cram 2 books as my sole study resource--that will always be the standard by which these books are judged. This book falls far short.

This book introduces you to the various topics on the 70-305 test, but does not cover a single topic in enough depth to be worthwhile. The review questions and practice exams are weak, also.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the exam.......2003-07-29

If your goal is to pass the exam then this book is for you. This is not a book to learn ASP.NET. So you should not expect any basic stuff. Read other books to learn ASP.NET then use this to pass the exam. I highly recommend it. I read it and gave the tests at the end and passed in the first attempt.
