Book Description
Polls tell us that most Americanswhether they earn $20,000 or $200,000 a yearthink of themselves as middle class. As this phenomenon suggests, "middle class" is a category whose definition is not necessarily self-evident. In this book, historian Daniel Walkowitz approaches the question of what it means to be middle class from an innovative angle. Focusing on the history of social workerswho daily patrol the boundaries of classhe examines the changed and contested meaning of the term over the last one hundred years.
Walkowitz uses the study of social workers to explore the interplay of race, ethnicity, and gender with class. He examines the trade union movement within the mostly female field of social work and looks at how a paradigmatic conflict between blacks and Jews in New York City during the 1960s shaped late-twentieth-century social policy concerning work, opportunity, and entitlements. In all, this is a story about the ways race and gender divisions in American society have underlain the confusion about the identity and role of the middle class.

Book Description
"Several years ago it was revealed to me that creative nonfiction was a legitimate literary genre," writes Phil Crossman. "It was the most liberating experience of my life. All these years I thought I'd been simply lying."
Crossman is a humorist in the Mark Twain mold: wry, satiric, and keenly aware of the shortcomings of human beings, but with a leavening of self-deprecation and underlying sympathy. Though rooted in a regional consciousness (coastal Maine), his humor succeeds in making the local universal.
Away Happens considers daily life on an island in Penobscot Bay that supports both a tight-knit local community and a larger seasonal population. Whether he is recounting a debate that happened at the Lions Club over who counts as a "local" or describing his adventures getting the Thanksgiving turkey into the oven, ruminating on how the ferry schedule shapes island life or recalling a local crime spree, Crossman is funny, unsentimental, and authentically Maine.
"There are only two places, Here, this island off the coast of Maine, and Away. Here, this place, is a small place and Away, everywhere else, is a big place, but make no mistake about it, Here is Here and Away is not. 1276 people live Here. Billions more live Away than live Here, although increasingly, during the summer, it seems otherwise." --From the Book
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Stories.......2005-09-08
I'm not even qualified to be from "away", as an occasional guest of an official "away" resident of Vinalhaven, Maine. But Phil's stories have added greatly to my appreciation of this special island, its people and institutions. I read his hilarious story about an improbable romance at the island dump shortly after returning from there, carefully recycling, cramming my small $1.50 bag of garbage and checking out the free clothes in the "bus".
Unless you are lucky enough to be invited by a resident, you'll probably spend the night in Phil's tiny but comfortable motel, right in the heart of town and surrounded by the best lobster and crab you'll ever eat.
Because the stories were written for several different outlets, the styles and length vary, and there are a few tiny clunkers, but there are also some brilliant phrases that make it all worthwhile. Commenting on some island septuagenarians that insist on golfing at least once per month year-round, he said that it was remarkable, "considering the latitude of the course and the longitude of the participants."
Great fun. Just don't get too absorbed and miss the last ferry!
Maine at its finest!.......2005-05-13
This is a wonderful Yankee counterpart to Minnesota's Lake Wobegone! Life on a small island in the Penobscot Bay has its charms and challenges. Crossman's vignettes are humorous, insightful and poignant. A fun read.

Book Description
With a career that exemplified the maturation of romantic black pop into a sophisticated form spanning social and sexual polities, Marvin Gaye was one of the most consistent and enigmatic of the Motown hit makers. Through interviews with many of the artists and record-company employees closest to the singer, Edmonds examines in detail the making of the legendary What's Going On. In an era of Vietnam and civil rights protests, Gaye's determination and vision resulted not only in inspirational, pioneering grooves but in an album that challenged America to take a long, hard look at itself.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, very detailed.......2003-12-23
All Marvin Gaye Fans Should Have This Book. Alicia Keys Turn Me On To This Book, Thank You Alicia
Great Book!.......2003-07-02
This book is wonderful! It gives a full account of the concept behind this wonderful album, which stood the test of time! To get the full effect, order the "What's Going On" Deluxe Edition!
Not only for Marvin fanatics..........2003-01-16
I've read all of the books written about Marvin and picked this up to add to the collection, expecting it to be little more than expanded liner notes for the album. Wow. Very wrong. The book ends up encompassing Marvin's entire life through the scope of his most acclaimed work. It's beautifully written, unfolding more like a novel than you'd ever expect. It's a genuinely moving look at a true artist taking the boldest step of his...and arguably any other musician's...life. I can't recommend this highly enough, both as an admirer of Marvin's and as someone who just likes to read a great book.
Arguably One of the Greatest Albums Period.......2002-01-12

Book Description
In a constantly changing world, individuals are forever growing to meet the challenges and developments that emerge around them. In contemporary society, technology is at the heart of change. Literature, too, reflects the evolution of culture and increasingly represents and considers technology. And as children become young adults, their reading helps shape their understanding of the world. This book examines representative works of science fiction, children's literature, and popular culture to show how these works reflect the process of growing up in a technological world. The volume looks at the simple picture books and comic books that appeal to small children; the formulaic adventures that fascinate older children; the films and television programs that are watched by children and young adolescents; the music videos and programming that appeal to young adults; and the popular novels that interest older readers. Included are discussions of Superman, the Hardy Boys, Star Trek, science fiction films, and music videos. The book points to similarities among popular culture, science fiction, and children's literature and demonstrates the relevance of these works to contemporary society.
Customer Reviews:
From juvenile series fiction's changing presentation.......2001-02-13
Science Fiction, Children's Literature And Popular Culture proves a college-level cross-section analysis of representative works of science fiction, children's literature and popular culture to examine depictions of coming of age in the modern world. From picture and comic books which appeal to the young to films, videos, and popular novels and writings, this covers everything from juvenile series fiction's changing presentations to multimedia presentations.
An outstanding anthology of informative essays........2000-09-09
Westfahl's essays in Science Fiction, Children's Literature And Popular Culture, range widely over American children's and YA popular entertainment, starting with a little known children's series but covering Superman, Horatio Algier and the Hardy boys, SF film (esp. the fifties) Star Trek and even music video in the context of film and advertising. Westfahl, a well known SF critic, allows himself more free-play in these essays. His playfulness gives rise to many intriguing speculations, connecting popular culture phenomena in convincing but previously unarticulated ways.
I greatly enjoyed each of the essays, even the first one about a now-obscure children's series that features a too good to be true boy called Charlie ("How Topsy Made Charlie Love Him," from the Better Homes and Gardens Story Book), which he analyzes from a developmental and a feminist perspective. The chapter "Giving Horatio Alger Goosebumps," supplements the Sands and Frank book referenced above with critical perspectives on both production and marketing and social contexts for YA series fiction. "Opposing War, Exploiting War: The Troubled Pacifism of Star Trek," should be read alongside Bartter's essay in Sullivan's collection, listed below. "Legends of the Fall: Going Not particularly Far Behind the Music," offer basic analyses of MTV and VH1 stories of rock star legends, asking basic questions about their accuracy and comparing different 'kinds' of stories told about these famous people. My favorite essay is "Even better than the Real Thing: Advertising, Music Videos, Postmodernism and (Eventually) Science Fiction." In this essay, he describes for us the similarities in the stories told within advertising on the media. Media-based advertising for products tells stories within which the products are set, just like music videos which are used to promote artists and to promote music sales, and film trailers use some of the same techniques to summarize or condense the film, telling a story about it that may or may not be true.
Westfahl makes a convincing argument for their inter-related development (similar to the critical argument made by Palumbo on comic books in the Sullivan collection) and this is only one of several insights provoked by this essay. As Westfahl's fifth through eleventh chapters emphasize, there are many more intersections between media which can be productively explored, from the realization of written as film to the expansion of television SF through written series fiction. More than any other sub genre, SF has adapted itself to the new media and made them an intimate link in the definition of the genre. The links between fiction and other popular culture phenomena are pervasive, fascinating, and in need of further attention. Thus, in addition to addressing age-based demarcations of SF, the critical works address defining moments in the history of SF are we know understand it's ability to expand and adapt to changing tastes, habits, and indeed needs, of its audience.
Westfahl does not attempt a summary chapter, but ends with an analysis of The Time Machine and its many permutations in cinematic productions, giving us, by example, a socio-historical perspective on the film industry that also reflects on the history of science fiction. Since Wells' story is so tied up with the history of SF as a genre and with all the media carrying the SF story, including radio, television and film, the final essay does give us some sort of summary in that it covers the earliest and the latest forms for the story.

The Magic of Bewitched trivia and more.......2006-08-08
This is a very involved book about Bewitched , even if you didn't know much about the show you do after reading this book.
I loved the recipes in the back, a great addition. Great to hear about the two Darrins and the story behind the departure of Dick York.
I'd love to see a follow up book!
I Know More About Bewitched Now!.......2006-07-10
I know a lot more about Bewitched now thanks to Gina Meyers. I don't like reading gossip or lies, I like fun to read, easy to read stuff. This book is organized and has great details and information.
Bewitched is The Best!.......2006-07-08
My mom and dad got me this book. They like the recipe section, and I like the trivia. I learned more about Mrs. Meyers, the author of the book. She is a Bewitched expert and used the same sources as some of the other Bewitched books. I can't wait to learn more about Bewitched and read more books by this author!

Book Description
Utilizing the more advanced features of the Data Web Controls has many developers stumped. These controls are fairly simple to use when it comes to simple data display. However, they can do much more than merely present data. For example, the DataGrid Web Control allows for sorting, paging, and editing of data. In addition, these controls allow for templating of data, which can be used to provide more complex views. The DataGrid, DataList, and Repeater forum on the Microsoft ASP.NET Forums received more than 2,100 posts in the first month and a half of use, or over 35 posts per day on average. As the Web master of an ASP.NET Web site, Scott has also received numerous emails from readers and visitors asking questions about these Web Controls. ASP.NET Data Web Controls is likely to be an indispensable item in every ASP.NET developer's toolbox.

ASP.NET Datagrid Control.......2005-09-09
I am a professional developer and I found Scott's book to be one of the best examples on how to write a technical book. His examples are practical and usable. The Datagrid, Datalist, and Repeater are throughly examined and I use it as a reference for work.
One of the most useful Books I have every bought!.......2005-04-24
This is one of the the best .NET books I have in my collection. The book is well orginized and easy to read. The concepts are mixed so it is great for a beginner or some one looking for a fresh look on something they already do. I will recommend it to any ASP.NET programmer!
Very helpful as a learning tool and reference........2004-11-17
I've been playing around with ASP.NET for a while now and have always been intimidated by the DataGrid. I don't know why, I just was. I've had this book for a while and finally picked it up to read it. I'm about 3/4 of the way through and have already created my first application and used a DataGrid and a Repeater. Without the book, I'd still probably be hand-hacking at this. Great job, Scott!
DataGrid, DataList and the Repeater Learned correctly.......2004-10-03
Mr. Scott Mitchell's book: Asp.net Data Web Controls Kick Start is an excellent book to get the novice of Asp.net Data Web Controls up and running quickly. I had a probelem, emailed him, and he immediately responded with the solution to my problem. I was truely grateful to Mr. Mitchell. Using stored procedures in SQL Server and retreiving only the needed redcords via a stored procedure "chapter 8", proved to be indispensable.
I was able to easily understand his code and apply his techniques and methods to my projects (I'm still a student). Even my classmates were amazed of my understanding of the asp.net DataGrid features. So I simply recommended Asp.net Data Web Controls Kick Start as the book to use to grasp the pertinent information needed to succeed and think.
As a beginner in ASP.Net, I truely and honestly recommend this book as your Kick Start and reference to the DataGrid, DataList and the Repeater. The step-by-step hands-on examples makes this book also a great tutorial. The programming language was great (VB) and I'm sure a person that is familiar with C# will not be imtimidated with the VB.net code. The book also offers more information on the topics by offering online resources. Thank You Mr. Scott Mitchell
Buy this book and you will not be disapointed.
Sincerely and honestly
Incredible, A must have for asp.net developers.......2004-04-30
First off, if you see a book written by Scott Mitchell then just buy it. The author of this book guarantees you an incredibly written, easy to understand, and informative book. This book is no exception to the great work produced by Mitchell.
This book will provide you with learning tools for asp.net data controls and real world examples. This book is the best on the market for those just learning asp.net or veterans in need of more in depth material and a reference book.
If you even sometimes program in asp.net, this book should be on your shelf.

Book Description
Visual Studio .NET is the premier development environment for creating .NET applications. The environment includes specialized tools for working with databases, XML files, and XML Web services. Building applications with Visual Studio .NET is a very different experience than building ASP.NET applications with a standard text editor. Visual Studio .NET performs a lot of invisible work in the background, and the environment makes a number of assumptions about the best way to build applications. It is difficult for even an experienced ASP.NET developer to use Visual Studio .NET effectively without any guidance. This book helps readers understand and begin using this complicated environment.

Customer Reviews:
Solid starting point.......2004-06-25
This book does exactly what it says - gives a fast paced intro to asp.net. It's very readable and offers code samples in both c# and vb.net.
I'm almost done with it and have just two issues:
1. Weak summary. The summaries are basically a short paragraph restating the purpose of the chapter. There are no review questions or any other way to gauge your understanding level.
2. Reliance on "drag and drop". Data objects are almost exclusively accessed by dragging them onto the designer surface and letting vs.net write the code. It wouldn't have taken much longer to type out the ado.net code manually (something I started doing on my own about half way through) and the repetition would have been very beneficial, not to mention the fact that this method isn't very practical in the real applications.
Coming down off of the soapbox, this is a very useful book that lets you dive right in and gain confidence quickly.
Good book for beginner. And for deploying rapid prototype.......2004-04-09
Good book, easy to read, maybe too easy!!! Repetitive explanations on how to connect to with slqDataConnection...
But for beginner, it's a good introduction to the world of ASP.NET. You will have to read a couples of other books to really understand the amplitude of this new technology.
Disappointing.......2004-03-19
I got this book because it received many good reviews. I was extremely disappointed when I read it. This book felt like a copy-and-paste reference. It goes through code without really explaining why you're programming it that way. Another weakness of this book is that, instead of sticking to code you've learned about, it has you program complex code that they never teach you about in this book. The real-world examples and instruction are also seriously lacking.
Overall, I would urge you not to get this book, beginner or not. I went through the entire thing and still feel like I didn't learn anything.
Good intro with exceptions.......2004-01-31
This is a good introduction into .Net and it gets deep into abilities so it will be a good reference. The only criticism I have is the author's overuse of Visual Studio objects. While they work fine in simple applications, programmatically building your objects (rather than dropping them onto your application) gives you much more control and speeds up program execution. It would have been beneficial if he would have showed both processes (object and programming based) instead of only the simple approach. However, it is still a good intro and I would recommend it.
Aptly named, a boon for beginners.......2004-01-17
This book from Stephen Walther has got everything right, especially for beginners. I wish I had seen this book a little earlier. The first part on Creating Web Forms is written very well. It neither scares the beginner nor does it bore him. Most book authors don't realize that beginners are only looking for a simple book through which they can gain confidence. The language in this book is simple and whereever the author uses sophisticated technical language he explains it. Very good book if you are looking to learn ASP.NET using Visual Studio.NET (doesn't matter if its C# or VB.NET route, code is written in both.). One other good thing is that the author takes you step by step because we all know that one cannot learn programming by reading but only by programming.
